A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR

Editor's Note: This letter was recently mailed to every registered household in each of our four parishes.

Dear Parishioner,

Saint Paul wrote letters to growing faith communities. Popes have through history written encyclicals addressed to the world. Local bishops pen messages intended for the faithful of their diocese. Written at various times and always addressing particular concerns, the words have been sent out to inspire and educate, to challenge and correct, to encourage and offer hope. With the desire to reach out to every registered household in the parishes of Saint Joseph, Saint Juan Diego, Saint Padre Pio and Saint Scholastica, I am sending you this letter.

Everyone knows that in October of 2018 we experienced a dramatic change in the model of church life in our Catholic experience. Who would have ever thought that four different parishes would be spoken of in the same sentence? Or that three priests would be assigned to serve them all? And yet that is our new reality. Some might call them exciting times, others might refer to them in less positive terms. It's probably true that everyone has an opinion . . . and just as surely everyone has a response.

The responses are varied. Most seem to give evidence of support as they try to get on-board with the changes. Others register a sad disappointment or strong disagreement. And there is the anger and hurt that has caused some to walk away.

This letter is my effort to reach out to every single person, couple and family in the parishes of the Lower Allegheny Valley. If you are actively participating, if you are sitting on the fence, if you have put distance between yourself and the Church, I hope that you will hear my words of truth and encouragement. Yes, the Church is broken . . . an imperfect reflection of the human condition. We are all broken, manifested in many ways. However, it is in the admission of that brokenness that we can move forward, but not without the mercy of God and the willingness to forgive.

In the name of my brother priests, Fr. Mike Decewicz and Fr. Bill Siple, my great hope is that this coming season of Lent will be for all of us a time of reconciliation in making right that which is wrong. To find it in our hearts to forgive the wrong done to us and to ask forgiveness of any wrong that we have done.

Included with this mailing is the regular schedule of Mass and Confession times as well as the entire schedule for Ash Wednesday, Stations of the Cross, Holy Week and Easter Masses. I hope that it will prove helpful as you set your sights on strengthening your bond of love with God, coupled with your renewed commitment to our Catholic faith within the community of the Lower Allegheny Valley grouping of parishes.

May the Lord bless, guide and inspire the faith journey that is yours.

Parish Share Program Second Collection: In order to help each of our parishes reach its goal, a second collection will be taken at all of the Masses on the First Weekend of every month. Going forward, the collection will be taken this weekend, February 29-March 1 and continue thereafter on April 4-5, May 2-3, and so on.

In two weeks, our catechumens—Spencer Hennen and Alex and Landon Cardounel—will travel to St. Paul Cathedral for the Rite of Election. There, Bishop Zubik will inquire into their preparation and ask if they wish to enter fully into the life of the Church. Upon their assent, he will invite them to solemnly inscribe their names in the Book of the Elect. In addition, John Hepburn, a baptized Christian, will participate in the Call to Continuing Conversion. During that rite, Bishop Zubik will hear and recognize the desire of John and other candidates to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. Please pray for our catechumens and candidate as they prepare for these steps in their journey toward a deeper relationship with Christ!

“Becoming the One and the Path to the Good Life.” On Monday, March 30TH from 7:00-8:30 pm in the parish hall of Saint Scholastica Church, Father Joe Freedy and Father Adam Potter, priests of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, will offer a presentation on why we were created, what our bodies tell us about us, and how our sexuality is fulfilled in life-giving love. Their talk uses the writings of Pope Saint John Paul II in his "Theology of the Body." Parishioners from all four of our parishes are invited and encouraged to attend this inspiring and insightful talk.

The “seven deadly sins” are patterns of dysfunction that keep us separated from God and ultimately lead to unhappiness. Join us as we embark on Fr. Robert Barron’s exploration of these seven sinful patterns and also learn how practicing countervailing virtues can break the cycle of sin. We will meet seven Wednesday mornings from March 4 to April 22 (no session during Holy Week) from 10:30 am to noon in the St. Scholastica Parish Hall. There is no cost, although donations toward refreshments will be accepted. Please register by March 2 with your contact details at [email protected] or 412-781-0186, ext. 18.

Baptism Preparation Program:

Parents requesting the sacrament of

baptism for their newborn child must

participate in a one hour session of

instruction before the scheduled date of

the baptism. The class, facilitated by

Deacon Bob Wertz, will ordinarily be

offered on the First Monday of every

month at 7:00 pm in the parish hall of

Saint Scholastica Church. Please call the

parish office of the church in which you

wish to schedule the baptism. The

secretary will take all of the necessary

information and help you to schedule the

date of the baptism. According to your

preference, the sacrament may be

celebrated during the Saturday Vigil

Mass, a Sunday morning Mass or after

the Masses are concluded. Ordinarily

one of the parish priests or the deacon

will officiate at the baptism. However,

priest or deacon relatives or friends of

the family are certainly welcome to

celebrate the sacrament.

LAV Sight & Sound and Padre Pio Center Tour: Join us on May 12 and 13 for a trip to the Sight & Sound Millennium Theatre in Lancaster County and the National Centre for Saint Padre Pio. A $50 per person deposit is due with reservation; balance due by March 15. Make checks payable to Wendt Touring and mail to St. Pio Parish, 450 Walnut Street, Pittsburgh PA 15238. The fee is $30 (additional children in family are $25) and includes a T-shirt, trophy and pizza party. Registration forms are available on our website www.lavcatholic.org under St. Joseph Forms & Downloads. You may return the form and fee to the St. Joseph Parish or Preschool offices, or by mail. The deadline to register is March 20.

Saint Juan Diego’s annual St. Anthony

Novena will begin on Tuesday, March

17, with Mass at 6:30 pm in Madonna of Jerusalem Church, followed by recitation

of the Novena prayers. The Novena will conclude on Tuesday, June 9. During these thirteen weeks, morning Mass will

not be celebrated in Madonna Church.

Parish Finance Councils

Mandated by Church law, every parish must have one. Members advise and assist the pastor in administering temporal affairs and help to monitor the financial activity of the parish. Currently each of the four parishes in the Lower Allegheny Valley grouping have their own separate Finance Council. Moving forward it is the intention of Father Dale DeNinno to establish one single Finance Council with representatives from Saint Joseph Parish, Saint Juan Diego Parish, Saint Padre Pio Parish and Saint Scholastica Parish. For now each parish will retain its separate money and saving accounts; however, they will all be brought together in the eventual parish grouping merger by July of 2021.

Among the specific areas where Finance Councils advise the pastor are these: budgets, bookkeeping, internal controls, development, construction projects, and balance sheet management. The LAV Finance Council will also analyze the financial impact of the ultimate merger of our four parishes.

To accomplish its mission, the Finance Council ideally needs a blend of various skill sets, including accounting, finance, business management, information technology, and facilities management.

The new Finance Council for the Lower Allegheny Valley grouping of parishes will have eight members, two each from our four parishes. Individuals with backgrounds in any of the foregoing areas who would be willing to serve on the LAV Finance Council are asked to contact Fr. Dale DeNinno at 412-963-8885 x304.

This past Sunday, more than 80 of our 8th grade students gathered together at a retreat to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and learn about the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit as they continue on their journey toward Confirmation later this spring. Please keep them in your prayers during this time of spiritual growth.

8-12 grade students, join us for the Unaltered Tour on Saturday, March 28, from 6:00-10:00 pm at Stage AE. The heart of Unaltered is to “lead students to the fullness of life” by focusing on the “Anchors” of unaltered living—Speak Life, Live with Purpose, Love Selflessly, Trust God, Pursue Purity. Cost is $10 per person. Contact Meredith Troyan by March 21 if interested.

Appalachia Mission Trip: Throughout the month of March there will be cardboard "houses" located in the vestibules of each of the churches in the LAV grouping of parishes. Attached to the roof of each "house" will be envelopes with dollar amounts printed on them. You are asked to take one of the envelopes, place the dollar amount inside it, and deposit the envelope inside the "house" or place the envelope in the regular collection basket passed during Mass.

Your support of this mission effort will go a long way in helping our high school students to make their annual trip to Appalachia in late June. The goal is to raise at least $35,000 to cover all of the expenses of travel, food and supplies.

Local Homeless Ministry Donations: These items are needed now: canned soup, macaroni and cheese, Hamburger Helper-type prepared meal mixes, and powdered or shelf-stable milk. Please leave donations in plastic bags. Gray bins are in the Saint Scholastica church entrance.

Larger donations in bags (NOT boxes) and ALL clothing may be brought to the SIDE DOOR of 316 Third Street, Aspinwall, from 10 am-12 noon on Mondays and Fridays. Please do NOT leave any donations outside 316 or 318 Third Street.

Collection bins for local Food Pantries are located in the following Church entrances:

Saint Edward Church and Saint Francis Church are collecting paper products and dried pasta and side dishes.

Saint Joseph Church is collecting Rice-a-Roni and any non-perishable items. Please leave donations in the drawer in the vestibule.

Saint Scholastica Church is collecting canned soups, stews, chili and rice and any non-perishable items. Please put donations in the red collection bin.

The St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry in Sharpsburg is requesting donations of the following items: cake and cookie mix, icing, hot chocolate, pancake mix, pasta sides, condiments, non-refrigerated juice, and cereal. Items can be brought to the Saint Juan Diego Parish Office. To request food assistance from the food pantry please call 412-781-2866.

Clothing Donations: The St. Vincent de Paul Society has a clothing collection bin in the back parking lot of Saint Francis Church.

A Letter from Bishop Zubik

Dear Father Decewicz:

Thank you and all the members of the Addiction Recovery Ministry for not only sending me a copy of your report but especially for all that you have accomplished since your establishment a year ago. I appreciated reading about not only all that was done in 2019 but also the good works being planned for 2020 and beyond.

But my gratitude pales in comparison to that of the many whose lives are richer because of your efforts. Be assured of my continued prayers for you and for all those involved in the Addiction Recovery Ministry.

Grateful for our continued efforts together in being On Mission for The Church Alive!, and for our belief that "Nothing is Impossible with God," I am Your brother in Christ,

Most Reverend David A. Zubik

Grief Support

As part of our ongoing outreach to the recovery community, A.R.M. is working on developing a grief support group, specifically for those who have lost someone to addiction.

Deacon Tim Noca, who is assigned to assist the board and me with this ministry, has met with an existing overdose grief support group at St. Louise de Marillac. They are willing to work with us as we begin establishing such a group in our area and hopefully establish the

support group throughout our area.

What we need for this group is for some of those who have lost a loved one to addiction overdose who would be willing to share their story with a group of people grieving the loss of a loved one. Often, the most

effective and compassionate way to deal with the grief process is to be with people who share your experience and are willing to share their story and to support others in grief.

If you or someone you know would be interested in working with us, please contact us at 412-218-5410 so we can form a committee and

begin to reach out in love and support for those who have lost a loved one to addiction. Fr. Mike

The next 12-step reflection will take place on Thursday, March 5, at 7:00 pm in Madonna of Jerusalem Church.

The Catholic Parish Cemeteries Association invites all to attend the Dedication Service for the Virgin of Guadalupe Chapel Mausoleum in Saint Mary Cemetery on Sunday, March 22, at 3:00 pm. The Most Reverend David A. Zubik will preside.

The World Day of Prayer will be held on Fr iday, March 6, at 11:00 am at Faith United Methodist Church, 261 W. Chapel Ridge Road. This year's theme is "Rise! Take Your Mat and Walk". The speaker is Sandra Matoushaya, a native of Zimbabwe. The service will be followed by a light lunch, suggested donation of $8.00. RSVP requested for lunch and childcare at 412-828-3197.

Members of the LAV grouping will be holding vigil outside Planned Parenthood on Thursday, March 5, from 1-5 pm. To

participate, please contact Mary Catherine Scanlon at 412-781-6550.
