INTRODUCTIONWe are delighted to announce our fantastic exhibitions for the month of June 2012. The Grant Bradley Gallery will again be celebrating a wide range of creative mediums that will promise to inspire it’s visitors. Three exhibitions will take place, in our main gallery we have an exhibi-tion hosted by Bristol based charity The Harbour. Now in it’s 21st year, the Harbour has provided free counseling for countless people in deal-ing with life-threatening physical illnesses. As well as being a celebration of it’s achievements over the last 21 years, this exhibition will also show an engaging collection of work, some of which has been produced by members and patients of the charity.

Showing on our upper level will be Out of The Life Room, a collab-orative group show of 11 artists who have all attended the Bristol Life Drawing School. This exhibition will be a celebration of the figurative discipline and will demonstrate how skills learnt via quick sketches in the life drawing room are applied to final paintings.

Vyvyan Hope-Scott will also be exhibiting, an artist who works with paint and ink to create beautiful abstract pieces.

Bristol charity The Harbour is entering its 21st year of providing free counselling and psychotherapy for people affected by life-threatening illnesses such as cancer, Parkinsons or motor-neurone disease. To celebrate, it is mounting Harbour 21, an exhibition held at The Grant Bradley Gallery of paintings and sculpture by local and national artists. An exciting variety of work will be on display, at a wide range of prices.

‘The Harbour has helped over 1,500 people from the South West in facing ill-ness, diagnosis, treatment and bereavement.’ says Mike Snudden, Clinical Lead at The Harbour. ‘We’ve provided some 28,000 therapeutic sessions. It’s a marvellous achievement for a small local service.’

There’ll be a chance to admire and buy sculptures and paintings, including un-framed prints, by some hugely talented artists, including photographer Mark Sim-mons, painter Valerie Bowes and Mike Snudden who is also a gifted sculptor.

Vyvyan Hope-Scott was born in Bristol in 1960 and trained as a musician and composer but has always been active as a painter with occasional forays into printmaking and sculpture.

Influenced by Spanish abstract artists like Antoni Tàpies and Eduardo Chillida as well as the American Cy Twombly, he works with a variety of media, enjoying the materiality of the paint. In 2012 he has contributed work to the Grant Bradley open and had a solo show at the Tobacco Factory; previously he has shown work at the RWA summer exhibition, Centrespace, Bristol School of Art and Richmond School of Art. He regularly shows at the West Bristol Arts Trail.

‘The pictures, though abstract, often suggest landscape; perhaps an abandoned industrial site, perhaps somewhere half-remembered or dreamed. Sometimes they allude to shapes found in maps, or of mechanical parts of locks and clocks; like old technical drawings of machines whose scale and purpose is unclear. There’s often a calligraphic element, lots of contrast, plenty of black and a certain amount of drips and spatter. Exploiting the qualities of the paint itself is one of the main reasons for doing it.’
