I hope that everyone had a safe and joyous holiday season!
It has truly been a wonderful experience visiting the Clubs and inducting new Lions. I’m certain
that I am the envy of all the Past District Governors with the tremendously mild weather we have
had for my visitations, compared to what some experienced with driving in the cold and snow!
I failed to mention it in the December newsletter what a tremendous experience it was to have so
many Lions and guests at the November 14th Cabinet Meeting! The meeting room at the School for
the Deaf was overflowing with the Cabinet chairpersons. PDG Rich Keller was borrowing chairs from
other rooms to try to accommodate everyone. I know this is just the beginning of a renewed dedication by those who have
accepted the responsibility to serve on the Cabinet and I am certain that this response will continue into the future.
MEMBERSHIP! As of this newsletter we are at a plus 6 in membership since July 1st. I know all of you are doing your
part to help the District grow. Let’s keep building the Pride and ask just One.
The Membership Chairperson of a club is an elected officer of the club. Some of the responsibilities and duties of the
chairperson are:
Create a plan for club membership.
Understand the different type of memberships and programs offered by LCI Understand and incorporate
membership satisfaction program into membership growth.
Encourage the recruitment of new members and promote award programs.
Form a membership committee and work with it.
Ensure new members receive New Member Orientation and mentor them.
Serve as a member of the zone level membership committee.
Submit membership recruiting report to club officers once a month.
Conduct exit survey with members who leave the club.
REMEMBER it’s everyone's responsibility to bring in new members.
Let us all serve with Dignity, Harmony and Humanity

Fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos,
Greetings!! As most of you have not met me yet, allow me to introduce myself.
My name is Dr. Brandon J. Smith and I am your 2016 1st Vice District Governor. Over
time I hope to get to know all of you on a more personal basis, but until then I thought I
would write a short biography.
A 30 year old Western Pennsylvania product, born and raised in a small dead steel
town in Beaver County along the Ohio River, I realized the importance of service and
giving back to those less fortunate. In my free time during high school I could be found
volunteering my time with whatever projects could be found. From painting pumpkins for
the elderly, helping sort and deliver blankets for Project Linus, collecting donations for a
plethora of charities, or building benches and picnic tables for the high school, philanthropic
work has always been a part of my life. When it came time to choose my career, I looked no further than
Chiropractic. On a daily basis I am able to help and further serve my fellow man.
I joined the Oakmont Lions in December 2010 after receiving my doctorate. I realized that in order to
have a better handle on helping out in a community, I must be involved. I was immediately made 3rd
VP and
worked my way all the way through to President of the Oakmont Lions Club. At the very last function I
attended, in fact the very same function I passed the gavel on to my successor, I was approached by District
Governor Joe Donkin and asked to take over the role of Zone Chair with the idea to become the District
Governor for 2016.
I currently live in Brighton Township Pennsylvania, about 25 minutes north of the airport, with my wife
Heather, a fellow Lion, our Dog Elle, and our two cats. Along with being a member of the Oakmont Lions, I
also serve as an active associate member of the Chippewa Area Lions Club of 14-N, a member of the Beaver
Area Jaycees, a member of the Beaver County Chamber of Commerce, Treasurer of Beaver County AMSpirit
and on the Advisory Board for Beaver County Children and Youth Services.
I look forward to serving with everybody this coming year. Please feel free to contact me if you have any
questions or concerns.

EDITOR’S NOTE: On behalf of the 860 Lions Club members in District 14B, I would like to congratulate him
on accepting the position of 1st Vice District Governor. VDG Brandon presented his credentials at the
November 14th
Cabinet meeting and was unanimously approved for his position. I am certain that we all stand
behind VDG Brandon as he assumes the ultimate challenge of leading our District for the Lion year 2016-2017.
We are at the cusp of regaining our prominence in Multiple District 14 and look forward to VDG Brandon’s
leadership in this pursuit! Thank you Lion Brandon for stepping up!

WHITEHALL LIONS CHRISTMAS PARTY
Whitehall Community Lions had their Annual Christmas Party on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at South Hills Country
Club. As usual, the company was great and the food was delicious. And a special thank you to Lion Elaine Frombach for
organizing the party.
Lion Kathy Hunzinger was installed as a new member of
the Club by PDG John Frombach. Lion Kathy was
sponsored by Lion Paul Varnum. President Diane
Gallagher helped with the installation.
Entertainment was provided by the Baldwin High School
Baldwinaires. They sang beautiful songs for the
Christmas season. President Diane Gallagher presented
Director Kris Tranter with a check for a donation to the
Music Department.
Club members brought book donations for our Book Bingo that will be held at the Whitehall Public
Library in the spring – date and time to be announced in the near future. They also brought food
and other donations for the Cloverleaf Food Bank.

McKEESPORT LIONS PROVIDING CHEER AND GOOD WILL !
On December 15th, 12 members of McKeesport Lions Club sang Christmas carols for residents of Senior Care Plaza on
Lysle Blvd. in McKeesport and handed out Christmas Cards.
ELIZABETH FORWARD LEO CLUB Imagine my surprise when I happened to be flipping through the channels this past Saturday
morning (December 26th) and came across three members of the Elizabeth Forward High School
competing on “Hometown IQ” on KDKA. What a thrill it was to hear them proudly declare their
association with their Leo Club when they were introducing themselves. And what’s even more
astounding is all three contestants are brothers... Zachary Martik, a senior and President of the Leo
Club, and his twin brothers (sophmores) Garin (Leo Club Historian) and Gavin Martik. Each of
them proudly included there affiliation with the Leo Club along with their other distinguishing accomplishments at EF!
Congratulations on your second place finish!
After singing Christmas carols at Senior
Care Plaza, we visited fellow Lion Duane
Turnbull at UPMC McKeesport.
The club took part of the
annual Festival of Trees in
McKeesport, and took 3rd
place in the service
organization category.
Our club sang carols at The Palms, a personal care home in White Oak
on Tuesday, December 22nd
instead of having their weekly meeting.
Members also be rang the bells for the Salvation Army on Saturday,
the19th at the Giant Eagle in McKeesport.

GLASSPORT LIONS CONTINUING A TRADITION!
On December 12, the Glassport Lions Club continued with the tradition started by the Jefferson Hills Lions Club of
preparing 50 holiday fruit baskets to be delivered to the ill, the elderly and home-bound residents in our service
area. When the Jefferson Hills Lions Club disbanded, six of their members joined the Glassport Club and we are
continuing the tradition.

ROADSIDE SIGNS... DOES
YOUR CLUB HAVE ANY? Roadside signs are slowly disappearing, letting the
world know that there is a Lions Club in your
community. These are almost a thing of the past.
We don’t see too many of them anymore. And the
ones we do see are the old emblem and terribly
faded. Some are still in areas where we do not
even have a Lions Club anymore. If your Club
does not have any, consider getting a few and
adding the placard beneath it telling everyone when and where you meet. If you do
have signs or will be getting them, please take a picture of where they are and we’ll
put them in the newsletter! The McKeesport Lions are the first to respond...................

NEED A SPEAKER FOR YOUR MEETING? Look no further than our District’s Committee Chairpersons. Each of these dedicated Lions have accepted their respective
positions knowing full well that they will be available to attend club meetings when called upon, as long as there are no
conflicts with scheduling.
Most Clubs recruit new members, but how many Clubs actually make an effort to “educate” those new found Lions about
the different foundations, institutions and projects that we have continually supported over the years? Here are a few of
those Chairpersons who you might want to invite to one of your upcoming meetings:

Keeping Christmas
by Henry Van Dyke
The 2.5-minute read below was originally published in 1905 by Charles Scribner’s Sons. Whether or not you celebrate
Christmas, it’s an inspiring reminder to make that holiday spirit an all-the-time thing.
We revised a couple of words from men to people and the Bethlehem time reference from nineteen hundred years to two
thousand years. We also broke up the paragraphs a bit differently.
Imagine if we all made this a weekly read.
If you like it, please be sure to share it with others!
It is a good thing to observe Christmas day. The mere marking of times and seasons, when people agree to stop work and
make merry together, is a wise and wholesome custom. It helps one to feel the supremacy of the common life over the
individual life. It reminds a man to set his own little watch, now and then, by the great clock of humanity which runs on
sun time.
But there is a better thing than the observance of Christmas day, and that is, keeping Christmas.
Are you willing to forget what you have done for other people, and to remember what other people have done for you?
To ignore what the world owes you, and to think what you owe the world; to put your rights in the background, and your
duties in the middle distance, and your chances to do a little more than your duty in the foreground; to see that your
fellow-people are just as real as you are, and try to look behind their faces to their hearts, hungry for joy; to own that
probably the only good reason for your existence is not what you are going to get out of life, but what you are going to
give to life; to close your book of complaints against the management of the universe, and look around you for a place
where you can sow a few seeds of happiness – are you willing to do these things even for a day?
Then you can keep Christmas.
Are you willing to stoop down and consider the needs and the desires of little children; to remember the weakness and
loneliness of people who are growing old?
To stop asking how much your friends love you, and ask yourself whether you love them enough; to bear in mind the
things that other people have to bear on their hearts; to try to understand what those who live in the same house with you
really want, without waiting for them to tell you; to trim your lamp so that it will give more light and less smoke, and to
carry it in front so that your shadow will fall behind you; to make a grave for your ugly thoughts, and a garden for kindly
feelings, with the gate open – are you willing to do these things even for a day?
Then you can keep Christmas.
Are you willing to believe that love is the strongest thing in the world?
Stronger than hate, stronger than evil, stronger than death – and that the blessed life which began in Bethlehem two
thousand years ago is the image and brightness of the Eternal Love?
Then you can keep Christmas.
And if you keep it for a day, why not always?
But you can never keep it alone.
Love Your People.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I am so very thankful for each and every one of our clubs for their LCIF contributions in 2015.
This year 2016 is an opportunity for each of us to renew our commitment to both LCIF and our fellow Lions. What do I
hope to accomplish in the coming year? I hope I will:
Do a better job promoting LCIF. With your help, we can make the activities and accomplishments of LCIF known
to our community.
Ask clubs to increase contributions to LCIF, so we can do more in our community and around the world.
Continue to provide information on the LCIF recognition awards that your club can give to individuals for their
commitment and dedication to Lionism.
Continue to collaborate with District 14 B clubs, supporting the various projects that provide assistance to the
community and further advances the causes of LCIF.
Continue to encourage all district clubs to be visionaries; to make a difference not only in the communities we
serve, but around the world as well.
