ABOUT THIS SERVICE Welcome to St Paul’s and to our Eucharist. In this service we remember the last meal of Jesus with his friends in the Upper Room, and we recognise him in the breaking of the bread. Although our faith has its beginnings in history, this service does not just look back to the events of the past: it is a celebration that Christ is truly with us now, and a promise of the glory that will be ours when the whole universe is made complete in him. The Great Fifty Days of Eastertide form a single festival period in which the tone of joy created at the Easter Vigil is sustained through the following seven weeks, and the Church celebrates the gloriously risen Christ. The Alleluia appears frequently, and white or gold vestments and decorations emphasize the joy and brightness of the season. On the fortieth day there has from the late fourth century been a particular celebration of Christ’s ascension. He commissions his disciples to continue his work, he promises the gift of the Holy Spirit, and then he is no longer among them in the flesh. The ascension is therefore closely connected with the theme of mission. The arrival of the promised gift of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost completes and crowns the Easter Festival. Today’s mass setting sung by the choir is The Short Communion Service by Adrian Batten (c. 1591 - c. 1637).

The Gathering

Processional Hymn 175 - Come down, O Love divine (Down Ampney) 1 Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardour glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. 2 O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. 3 Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing: true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o'er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. 4 And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till he become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling.

Alleluia! Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia! The Lord be with you. The Lord bless you.

Introduction

Jesus Christ, whom we worship, is our crucified, risen and ascended Lord and we have walked with him through his journey of love. We have faced the agony of his suffering and death on a cross. We have rejoiced at his bursting free from the bonds of death. We have enjoyed his risen presence with us and his revelation of himself through the breaking of bread. We have seen his return to the throne before which every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that this Jesus is Lord. And now, with the followers of his own time, we await the coming of the promised Holy Spirit, his gift to his people, through whom we make Christ known to the world.

The Pentecost Reading: Acts 2:1-21

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.

The Eucharist for Pentecost 5

Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs – in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: “In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

The Eucharist for Pentecost 6

Be with us, Spirit of God; All nothing can separate us from your love.

Breathe on us, breath of God; All fill us with your saving power.

Speak in us, wisdom of God; All bring strength, healing, and peace. Amen.

The Gloria is sung by the choir. Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, goodwill towards men. We praise thee; we bless thee; we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Collect

Holy Spirit of God, blowing through creation: No door can keep you out. Unlock our hearts, breathe on us anew; that we may speak God’s words of life. With the Father and the Son, you live and reign, one God, now and forever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word

Old Testament Reading: Numbers 11:24-30

So Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord; and he gathered seventy elders of the people, and placed them all around the tent. Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders; and when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did not do so again. Two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the spirit rested on them; they were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. And a young man ran and told Moses, ‘Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.’ And Joshua son of Nun, the assistant of Moses, one of his chosen men, said, ‘My lord Moses, stop them!’ But Moses said to him, ‘Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit on them!’ And Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God. Psalm: 104:24-34, 35b 24 O Lord, how manifold are thy works : in wisdom hast thou made them all; the earth is full of thy riches. 25 So is the great and wide sea also : wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts. 26 There go the ships, and there is that Leviathan: whom thou hast made to take his pastime therein.

The Eucharist for Pentecost 8

27 These wait all upon thee : that thou mayest give them meat in due season. 28 When thou givest it them they gather it : and when thou openest thy hand they are filled with good. 29 When thou hidest thy face they are troubled : when thou takest away their breath they die, and are turned again to their dust. 30 When thou lettest thy breath go forth they shall be made : and thou shalt renew the face of the earth. 31 The glorious majesty of the Lord shall endure for ever : the Lord shall rejoice in his works. 32 The earth shall tremble at the look of him : if he do but touch the hills, they shall smoke. 33 I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live : I will praise my God while I have my being. 34 And so shall my words please him : my joy shall be in the Lord.

35 Praise thou the Lord, O my soul, praise the Lord.

Gradual Hymn 181 - Eternal Ruler of the ceaseless round (Song 1) 1 Eternal Ruler of the ceaseless round of circling planets singing on their way; guide of the nations from the night profound into the glory of the perfect day; rule in our hearts, that we may ever be guided and strengthened and upheld by thee.

The Eucharist for Pentecost 9

2 We are of thee, the children of thy love, the brothers of thy well-belovèd Son; descend, O Holy Spirit, like a dove, into our hearts, that we may be as one: as one with thee, to whom we ever tend; as one with him, our Brother and our Friend. 3 O clothe us with thy heavenly armour, Lord, thy trusty shield, thy sword of love divine; our inspiration be thy constant word; we ask no victories that are not thine: give or withhold, let pain or pleasure be; enough to know that we are serving thee.

Gospel Reading: John 20:19-23

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Go and make disciples of all nations, says the Lord. Remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John: When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the people, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’ This is the Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ the Word

Sermon – The Dean

The Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, and has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving The Lord is here. God's Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to offer thanks and praise. It is right indeed, it is our joy and our salvation, Holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise through Christ your only Son. You are the source of all life and goodness; though your eternal Word you have created all things from the beginning and formed us in your own image; male and female you created us. When we sinned and turned away you called us back to yourself and gave your Son to share our human nature. You raised him to life triumphant over death; you exalted him in glory. In him you have made us a holy people by sending upon us your holy and lifegiving Spirit, who came with signs from heaven to lead your Church into all truth. In the power of the Spirit, and made ready with his gifts, we take the joy of the gospel into all the world. Therefore with the faithful who rest in him, with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing:

The choir sings the Sanctus and Benedictus

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts! Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord most high. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

All glory and thanksgiving to you, holy Father; on the night before he died your Son, Jesus Christ, took bread; when he had given you thanks, he broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me. After supper he took the cup; when he had given you thanks, he gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins; do this as often as you drink it, to remember me. Christ is the bread of life: When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, Lord Jesus, until you come in glory. Therefore loving God, recalling your great goodness to us in Christ, his suffering and death, his resurrection and ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate our redemption with this bread of life and this cup of salvation.

Accept our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving which we offer through Christ our great high priest. Send your Holy Spirit that these gifts of bread and wine which we receive may be to us the body and blood of Christ, and that we, filled with the Spirit’s grace and power, may be renewed for the service of your kingdom. United in Christ with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, O God, in songs of everlasting praise. Blessing, honour and glory be yours, here and everywhere, now and for ever. Amen. As Christ teaches us we pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, grant us thy peace.

The Eucharist for Pentecost 17

Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed.

Communion Motet - Do Not Be Afraid by Philip Stopford Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name; you are mine. When you walk through the waters, I'll be with you; you will never sink beneath the waves. When the fire is burning all around you, you will never be consumed by the flames. Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name; you are mine. When the fear of loneliness is looming, then remember I am at your side. When you dwell in the exile of a stranger, remember you are precious in my eyes. Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name; you are mine. You are mine, O my child, I am your Father, and I love you with a perfect love. Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name; you are mine.

The Blessing of Light

Blessed are you, sovereign God, overflowing in love. With Pentecost dawns the age of the Spirit. Now the flame of heaven rests on every believer. Strong and weak, women and men tell out your word; the young receive visions, the old receive dreams. With the new wine of the Spirit they proclaim your reign of love. Amid the birth pangs of the new creation the way of light is made known. Source of freedom, giver of life, blessed are you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God for ever.

The Commission

For fifty days we have celebrated the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ over the powers of sin and death. We have proclaimed God’s mighty acts and we have prayed that the power that was at work when God raised Jesus from the dead might be at work in us. As part of God’s Church here in Dunedin, I call upon you to live out what you proclaim. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, will you dare to walk into God’s future, trusting him to be your guide? By the Spirit's power, we will.

Will you dare to embrace each other and grow together in love? We will.

Will you dare to share your riches in common and minister to each other in need? We will.

Page 19: The Liturgy of the Feast of Pentecost/ Te Rā o te Petekoha Eucharist Pentecost.pdf · The Eucharist for Pentecost 3 The Eucharist for Pentecost The Gathering Processional Hymn 175

The Eucharist for Pentecost 19

Will you dare to pray for each other until your hearts beat with the longings of God? We will.

Will you dare to carry the light of Christ into the world’s dark places? We will.

Blessing

May the Spirit, who hovered over the waters when the world was created, breathe into you the life he gives.

All Amen. May the Spirit, who overshadowed the Virgin when the eternal Son came among us, make you joyful in the service of the Lord.

All Amen. May the Spirit, who set the Church on fire upon the Day of Pentecost, bring the world alive with the love of the risen Christ.

All Amen. And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always.

All Amen.

Filled with the Spirit’s power, go in the light and peace of Christ. Alleluia, alleluia.

All Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia.
