The Marinduque’s Pride: MT. MALINDIG The name of Marinduque was derived from the word “Malindug”, which has a significant historical implication because the word means “tall and elegant stature” in Tagalog and has a similar, if not parallel meaning to the Visayan term “malindug”. In a study of place-names con-ducted by F. Arsenio Manuel, he wrote that these were two cognate terms which fittingly describe the island’s volcano, which today is known as Mt. Malindig. The Dasmarinas listing of encomiendas in 1751 already spelled Marinduque in this manner. How did this come about then? Manuel explained that the phonetic hispanization of the word “Malindug” followed the Spanish phonetic system. Spanish does not tolerate the voiced velar stop “g” in its phonology. In Morga‟s Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas and other Spanish chronicles for example, the term for „loincloth‟ (bahag in Tagalog), is spelled „bahaque‟. This spelling and its Spanish pronunciation follows Spanish phonetic laws – „bahag‟ becoming „bahaque‟.This change according to Manuel also appear to have happened to “Palanyag” which became “Paranaque”, with additional change taking place, the “l” becoming “r”, again following Spanish phonetic tendencies. This “l” to “r” spin shift is, also evident in “Marinduque” according to Manuel. Manuel‟s study was also consistent with an earlier study made by Cecilio Lopez, known as the Father of Philippine Linguistics”. Lopez wrote: “In old chronicles, the name of the island occurs in such varying forms as Malinduc, Marinducq, marinduc, Malindic, and Malindig” These are forms, he said, quite evidently to be analyzed into the well-known „adjectival‟ prefix „ma-„ denoting chiefly existence, and a stem occurring in Tagalog as „lindig‟, in Bikol as „lindog‟ or „lindug‟.”The change of the first sound of the stem „l” to „r” is likewise in consonance with a common Indonesian phonetic law, while the conversion of final “g” into the Spanish ending “que” finds an exact parallel in the case of the town Paranaque which in Tagalog is called „Palanyag‟. Mt. Malindig rises to 1,157 meters, the highest peak on the island-province of Marin-duque. At its summit, a mossy forest grows and a variety of ferns and wild orchids. In the vol-cano‟s foothills are areas where rare species of birds, deer, boar, wildcats, monkeys and other endemic wildlife still survive but in danger of extinction due to the encroachment in their habi-tation of the local populace. Mt. Malindig has been identified as a protected area.
There is still a long way to go in the area of environmental campaigns that should be conducted in the barangay and municipal level for the conser-vation, protection and preservation of the biodiversi-ty in Mt. Malindig and its vast foothills. Today, the spectacular view of the southern slopes of Mt. Ma-lindig from Elefante Island, serves as the major at-traction of the world-class luxury resort, Bellarocca Island Resort and Spa located on the said small island. Malindig is considered a potentially active volcano, in part because of the existence of the sul-
furic springs of Malbog. There is no record of its last eruption. The volcano‟s unique location at the heart of the Southern Tagalog region creates a unique panorama that encompasses Mindoro, Verde Island, Southern Luzon, all the way to Bicol and Burias Island. Mt. Malindig was named Mt. Marlanga by the Americans during the American Period
in the Philippines but this has been changed back to the original name of Mt. Malindig. It has
been the subject of folklore, (Legend of Marin and Duque), and has inspired the creation of
songs (“Malindig Foxtrot” by Ramon Madrigal) and contemporary dance-dramas (“Mara Un-
duk” by Eli Obligacion). A local school-based (Marinduque Victorians College), street festival,
“Malindug Festival”, has also been held in Buenavista to raise awareness on the need to pre-
serve and protect Mt. Malindig‟s remaining biodiversity. – Researched by Eli J. Obligacion

SAN JOSE, Occidental Mindoro, (PIA) -- Naging matagumpay ang pagtatapos ng Consumer Welfare Month sa Occidental Mindoro.
Bukod sa mga national program, nagpatawag ang Department
of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Central Office ng consumer assembly para sa
lahat ng consumer welfare offices sa buong Pilipinas, sabi ni DTI-4B Re-
gional Director Joel Valera.
Dito napag-usapan ang mga bagong batas, narebisang mga
batas, at kung paano mapoprotektahan ang mga consumers, sabi ni Valera.
Dito kumuha ang DTI-4B ng mga programa para sa limang
lalawigan at dalawang siyudad sa rehiyon ng Mimaropa.
Ang orihinal na konsepto ay gawin ang consumer welfare con-
gress bilang isang gawaing pang-rehiyon, subalit dahil sa geographical set
up ng Mimaropa ay ginawang pang probinsya ang programa.
Ang pinakahuling pinagdausan ng provincial consumer welfare
congress ay sa Odiongan, Romblon noong ika-12 ng Oktubre.
Kadalasang umaabot sa 150 partisipante ang lumalahok sa gani-
tong aktibidad kada probinsya na binubuo ng mga mamimili, may-ari ng
tindahan, senior citizens, media at academic sector.
Tinalakay sa consumer congress ang mga karapatan at respon-
sibilidad ng mga mamimili at manininda.
Pinagusapan din ang mga trade laws tulad ng labeling, price tag,
business name registration, at ang bagong batas na Republic Act 10054 o
Helmet Law.
Ipinaliwanag din dito ang Administrative Order No. 10 kung
saan natalakay ang mga isyu hinggil sa credit card at gift cheques, ang
pagbabawal sa “no return, no exchange policy,” ang Expanded Senior
Ang gawaing ito ay pagtiyak sa pagsunod ng mga manininda sa
Products Standard Law kung saan nakasaad na dapat maprotektahan ang
mga consumers sa kanilang buhay, pag aari at magkaroon ng kaligtasan sa
mga produktong binibili sa tindahan.
Noong 2011, umabot sa halos dalawang milyon ang mga na-
likom na substandard na mga paninda na katumbas ng halos P1 milyong
penalties.
Ito ay bumaba ngayong 2012, kung kaya naniniwala ang kaga-
waran na natuto na ang mga may-ari ng tindahan sa Mimaropa at produkti-
bo dahil sa ginagawa nilang monitoring.
Nilininaw ni Valera na ang gawaing ito ay progressive at hindi
oppressive dahil tinutulungan lamang ng kagawaran na makasunod ang
mga tindahan sa batas kalakal na pinapairal ng pamahalaan.
Isa sa mga karagdagang aktibidad ng DTI ay ang Regional Con-
sumer Month Quiz Bee noong ika-24 ng Oktubre.
Lumahok ang limang probinsya at dalawang siyudad ng
Mimaropa kung kaya may pitong mga estudyante ang nagharap sa kum-
petisyon. Dito nanguna ang lungsod ng Calapan, pumangalawa ang Ori-
ental Mindoro at pumangatlo naman ang Marinduque.
Ang mga nanalo ay tumanggap ng cash prize, trophy at plake.
Nakatanggap ng P15,000 ang champion, P10,000 para sa se-
cond prize at P7,500 para sa third prize.
Tumanggap naman ng P5,000 ang ibang mga kalahok bilang
consolation prizes. Kinilala din ang mga teacher coaches at ang eskwe-
lahan sa pagtanggap ng plake at trophy.
Nakaroon din ng pagkakataong makabisita ang mga kasali sa
regional competition sa Central Bank at sa makabagong Gardenia Bread
Plant.
Sabi ni Valera, sa ganitong mga aktibidad nila naibabahagi sa
mga susunod na pinuno at negosyante ang consumer welfare at iba pang

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro, (PIA) -- Inaprubahan ng Sangguniang Panlalawigan nitong Oktubre ang Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) ng Oriental Mindoro. Layon nitong higit na mapagbuti ang kalidad at husay ng pagkakaloob ng mga serbisyong panlipunan sa mga mamamayan ng Oriental Mindoro. Isasaga-wa ito sa pamamagitan ng pagsasaayos ng service delivery at support systems, organizational structure at staffing pattern ng mga ahensya at departamento ng pamahalaang panlalawigan. Ito ay upang tumugma sa mga kasalukuyan at panghinaharap na developmental trends sa buong lalawigan. “Sa pamamagitan ng Organizational Improvement Plan ng Oriental Min-doro, magkakaroon ng higit na dynamic workforce ang pamahalaang panlalawig-an na mas epektibong kikilos upang maisulong at maisakatuparan ang mga pro-gramang pangkaunlaran ng pamahalaan, sa tulong at suporta ng mga mamama-yan ng lalawigan,” pahayag ni Bise-Gob. Ito ang patunay na walang imposibleng gawin kung magsasama-sama at magtutulungan ang mga opisyal at ma-mamayan ng lalawigan.” Samantala, pinagkalooban naman ng DAP ang pamunuan ni Umali, sa pamamagitan ni DAP Senior Vice-President for Program Magdalena Mendoza ng Certificate of Appreciation sa naging epektibong pagtutuwang ng pa-mahalaang panlalawigan at DAP sa pormulasyon ng OIP at sa pagtitiyak sa pagkakaroon ng mga manggagawa ng pamahalaan na nakatuon sa layuning makapagkaloob ng mahahalaga at napapanahong serbisyong panlipunan sa mga mamamayan ng lalawigan. Sa ilalim ng OIP, magkakaroon ng implementation plan na tutukoy sa mga gagawing interventions na kabibi-langan ng pagbabago sa organizational structure at staffing pattern (transfer, abolition, creation, reclassification/re-titling of positions, downgrading at iba pang kaugnay na gawain), plantilla preparation, at writing/rewriting ng mga kinakailangang job description para sa bawat position title. BOAC, Marinduque, (PIA) -- The 21st Philippine Statis-
tics Quiz (PSQ) was held in different secondary schools in various municipalities in the province in
search for the country’s statistics whiz kids, in cele-bration to the 23rd National Statistics Month.
The 9th Provincial Elimination was held at the Marin-
duque State College last October 23 where Mitsee Anne T. Reyes coached by Engr. Nelson Rufino Montejo emerged as
champion. First runner-up was Rex Dancel U. Niebla while Prencess Chricel P. Garay emerged second runner-up. Third
place went to Schultz Walter M. Labaguis and Glory Ann L. Briones took fourth place.
The champion as well as the first and second place
winners will represent the province in the regional level com-petition to be held at Calapan city in Oriental Mindoro on No-
vember 20 while the National Competition will take place on December 4.
All regional champions will be awarded at the PSQ
national finals. Their coaches and schools will receive certifi-cates of recognition.
The top five winning participants on the PSQ national finals will take home a PSQ Trophy in addition to cash prizes.
Their coaches too will receive cash prize.
The Philippine Statistics Quiz is a venture of the Na-tional Statistics Office and the Philippine Statistical Associa-
tion, Inc. It is an annual contest nationwide for college fresh-
men held in 17 regions all-over the country to test the stu-dents’ knowledge in statistics. The contest started in 1992 and
is endorsed by the Commission on Higher Education in all

ROMBLON, Romblon, (PIA) -- Artists and craftsmen from the province of Romblon were in Baguio city recently for
the first leg of the artists exchange program of the Committee on Art Galleries (CAG) of the National Commission for
Culture and the Arts (NCCA) festival for 2012. The artists – Danilo Mortel, Joseph Salvador and Gedencio Vil-
lanueva (marble), Gilbert Riano (visual arts), Edgar Mayor (marble and
wood), Charles Montojo (sculpture), Eleazar “Elan” Molino (pottery) and
Arturo Muros (photography) took part in monoprint art and textile-ink-and-
sand art workshops facilitated by Tam-awan artists.
Chit Asignacion, vice president of Chanum Foundation Inc. which
developed and manages Tam-awan Village, also talked about the begin-
nings of Tam-awan and how it functions, and gave tips on how such an art-
ist village can be developed and maintained in Romblon.
Asignacion also facilitated a free-flowing discussion among the
artists on how to enliven the arts in Romblon. The artists talked about their
art, their aspirations, and the challenges they meet in pursuing their arts and
crafts.
The Romblon artists, accompanied by Roberto Madera as repre-
sentative of the provincial government of Romblon and Save the Fort San
Andres Movement Inc. whose mission is to restore the fort and other histor-
ical and cultural buildings in Romblon, also visited the art installations by Tam-awan artists, as well as toured café galleries
and some popular tourist sites in the city, among them the BenCab Museum of National Artist for Visual Arts Ben Cabrera.
“It was a thrilling experience. It’s inspiring,” said Margarita Molino, secretary of the Save the Fort San Andres
Movement Inc.
Gilbert Riano, who is among the younger craftsmen to attend the artist exchange, expressed being inspired by the
whole experience. “I learned new things,” he said. “The experience gave me ideas on what other products I can create back
home using indigenous and waste materials like marble chips.”
“We were awakened,” said Mortel. “We got new ideas and inspirations to make our very own arts concept.”
This early, the artists are already talking about creating an artists group in Romblon. “We can try to create an artistic
culture in Romblon,” shared Riano.
“The artists who attended can be the nucleus of the artist group we will create,” added Elan Molino.
Tam-awan artists headed by Asignacion and Maria Elena Catajan went to Romblon and conducted a mosaic arts

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan, (PIA) -- Education leaders, policy makers and other stakeholders converged this week for the Palawan Education Summit convened by the Department of Education (DepEd) Palawan and the provincial government in this city. The summit set on November 7-9 at the Skylight Convention Center gathered the key players of the education sector to work together in improving the quality of education in the light of present challenges and the K to 12 program. Under the theme “Napapanahong Tugon sa Pagpapalakas ng ng Edukasyon sa Palawan,” participants engaged in dis-cussions on the current state of education in the province and examined issues in an effort to uplift the quality of education. Congressman Juan Edgardo M. Angara, chairman of the Committee on Higher and Technical Education in the House of Representatives graced the event as keynote speaker with Edu-cation Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro, and FSC to address partici-pants on the last day. DepEd Undersecretary Yolanda S. Quijano did a presen-tation on the K to 12 Program. This summit is being initiated by the provincial govern-ment through its Ensuring Quality Instruction Program (Equip) for Palawan with the cooperation of DepEd Palawan. DepEd maglalaan ng 700 regular ng mga guro sa Palawan

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan, (PIA) -- Inaasahang 700 permanenteng posisyon para sa mga guro ang ilalaan ng Department of Education (DepEd) sa elementary at high school ng Palawan para sa school year 2013-2014 upang matugunan ang kakulangan ng mga guro sa lalawigan. Ito ang sinabi ni Dir. Sinforosa Guiñares, regional di-rector ng DepEd Mimaropa, Huwebes, sa unang araw ng open forum ng Palawan Education Summit na ginaganap sa lunsod na ito. Ayon kay Guiñares, mayroon nakatakdang 60,000 teacher items ang ipamamahagi sa buong bansa sa susunod na taon at ang Palawan ang pinaglaanan nang may pinaka-maraming teacher items sa Mi,maropa base sa electronic-based information system ng DepEd. Para sa susunod na school year 2013-2014, magla-laan ng 300 teacher items para sa elementarya at 400 teacher items para sa sekondarya para lamang sa Palawan division. Bukod sa teacher items, sinabi din na Guiñares na naka programa din ang pagbili ng mga bagong mesa at upuan para sa mag-aaral at guro; at ang karagdagang pagtatayo ng mga gusali sa mga paaralan. 9 finalists make it to Palawan Search for Outstanding Co-ops

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan, (PIA) -- Nine coopera-tives have made it in this year’s Search for Outstanding
Cooperatives of the Provincial Cooperatives Development Council.
These cooperatives are the WPU Credit Cooperative, Lapu
-Lapu Poblacion Multi-Purpose Cooperative (MPC), Rio Tuba Ki-lusang Bay an Consumers Co-op., Brooke’s Point Municipal Employees MPC,
Brookes Point Public Elementary School Teachers MPC, Taytay
Municipal Employees MPC, San Miguel Farmers and Fishers MPC,
Coron School of Fisheries MPC and Busuanga Municipal
Employees MPC.
Through these cooperatives, capital and financial require-
ments of farmers, fishermen and other micro-entrepreneurs have
been provided at low interests thereby augmenting income; liveli-
hood projects are undertaken in rural communities; technology
transfer effected and idle lands put to productive use.
The search is open to all cooperatives in good standing
and nominated by their respective Municipal Cooperative Develop-
ment Councils. The awarding of the winners will be held during
the Provincial Cooperatives Convention on November 14 at the
VJR Hall of the provincial capitol.
At present, there are 319 primary cooperatives in Pala-
wan registered with the Cooperatives Development Authority.

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan, (PIA) -- Bukas sa publiko at mga kasapi ng lokal na mamamahayag sa lungsod at lalawigan ang isinasagawang pagdinig ng 2013 badyet ng pamahalaang panlala-wigan. Ito ang inihayag ni board member Rolando E. Bonoan Jr., chairman ng Committee on Appropriations noong Oktubre 22. Ang nasabing pagdinig ay isinagawa sa session hall ng Sangguniang Panlalawigan kasama ang mga miyembro ng Junta Provincial at Local Finance Committee. Ayon kay Bonoan, ito ay upang malaman at malinawan sa taumbayan at mga mamamahayag ang mga proyekto at pro-gramang paglalaanan ng pondo ng lalawigan, gayundin upang mai-santabi ang haka-hakang gagamitin sa pamumulitika ang badyet. Tiniyak ni Bonoan na ang kapakanan ng mga taga-Palawan ang isasaalang-alang sa pagbalangkas ng 2013 budget at sinikap na maging maayos at balanse ang pagdinig ng panukalang badyet ng iba’t ibang cluster ng mga tanggapan ng pamahalaang panlalawigan.

LUNGSOD NG CALAPAN, Oriental Mindoro, (PIA) -- Ipinapanukala na gawing P30 ang terminal fee sa Calapan City Port mula sa P20 na kasalukuyang binabayaran ng mga gumagamit ng port. Sa ginanap na public hearing sa Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Conference Hall kaugnay sa panukala ng PPA Port Management Office, ipinaliwanag ni Port Manager Victor Arellano na kailangang itaas ang singil ng terminal fee upang higit na mapabuti ang mga serbisyong ipinagkakaloob nila sa mga pasaherong dumaraan dito. Ang Calapan City Port ay isa sa mga may best practices sa buong bansa kung serbisyo ang pag-uusapan, sabi ni Arellano. They say that for a dream to come true, you have to pur-
sue and work hard on it. For others, it takes many years to actu-ally realize what they want in life but for a 10-year old boy living
in Barangay Poblacion, Magsaysay, Occidental Mindoro, his dream starts now and he is working hard to achieve it. Patrick John Rodel Baylon is known in their community in
joining various singing competitions. The eldest among two chil-dren of Rodel and Lina Baylon, Patrick seems to be quite small
for his age but he should not be looked down just because of his frail physique. Even with new acquaintances, he doesn’t show
any reluctance to talk as he easily gets along with others. At a young age, it is evident that Patrick has a passion for sing-
ing. As a matter of fact, he joined several amateur singing competitions
in their municipality. Yet for the Regional Search for Exemplary Pantawid
Pamilya Children held last October 5 in DSWD Field Office IV-B in Malate, Manila, he sang the “Patuloy ang Pangarap”, a song which clearly depicts that of chasing after your dreams. Being not a new-
bie in this type of competition, there was no trace of anxiety, as he even cheerfully greeted the audience, the judges, and Re-gional Director Violeta A. Cruz, to whom he addressed by her nickname Director Boleng.
Before he proceeded with his number, he said “Di bale nang mahirap, basta may pan-
garap!” Hope and determination is palpable in Patrick’s eyes. He sang his heart out and let the au-dience felt that nothing is impossible for someone who dreams. Consequently, he made it possible,
being hailed as the regional winner. Described by Provincial Link Abigail Ablana as cute, charming, smart, and witty, Patrick
proves these words right when he answered the question given to him by one of the judges. His
question was about that if he will be the mayor of their municipality, what will be the first thing he will do to help his constituents uplift their lives. Without much hesitation, he answered, “Ipapatupad ko po ang 4Ps sa aming bayan para po matulungan ang aking mga kababayang mahihirap.” He added that it is important for the children to go to school and get proper education and have their
regular check-ups to maintain their healthy condition. The audience was clearly amused by his clev-erness. Patrick showed that he really possesses the qualities of an exemplary child.
Patrick’s family has been a beneficiary of the program since 2009. With her grandmother as
the grantee of the program, Patrick never ceases to comply with the conditionalities of the pro-gram. He was dewormed twice last 2011 and was fully immunized. The family recognizes the im-
portance of health by monitoring their children’s health and complying with the said conditionalities. In education, Patrick does not only go to school for the compliance of 85% attendance but also to actually learn something. He does not only join singing
contests initiated by the various organizations and clubs in Magsaysay to bag the cash prize but to also develop his talent and
be popular. Although it is normal to be a little hyper at times for his age, he still exhibits a good moral character and discipline.
Patrick is showered with nurture and unconditional love from his parents. He always feels it whenever they are present and watch him during his competitions. It gives Patrick extra energy whenever his parents are watching him on stage.
The search also demonstrated the strong support of the Local Government Unit (LGU) to the program particularly its Mayor, Honourable Eleanor Fajardo. The LGU of Magsaysay is very supportive to their candidate and shouldered the travelling
expenses of Patrick’s father, Mang Rodel. Originally, only one companion is allowed or can be shouldered in the expenses but
since the LGU saw that it will be better for their contender to be accompanied by both parents, they did not hesitate to pro-vide for Mang Rodel. True enough, Patrick became more confident and determined to win because his inspirations were there
to support him. Pursuing one’s dream is not an easy task but the Pantawid Pamilya, in its own terms, serves as an avenue for some-
one to take a step in making it come true. Patrick is among the few children whose dreams are being realized. With the help
of the program, whether in the support of receiving cash grants or instilling the values of health and education, his dream will be achieved someday and it all starts with a dream.
Just before its recent adjournment, Congress has passed on second reading the bill seeking to enact the K+12 basic education program but not without debate. Included in House Bill 6643 or the bill for the “Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2012” is a provision adopted from House Bill 3479 by Cong. Angelo B. Palmones of AGHAM Party-list which seeks to allow graduates of Science, Mathematics, Statis-tics and Engineering Courses to teach Science and Mathematics in the Elementary and Secondary levels. The included provision, section 8 of the bill, was proposed to be amended prior to its passage on second reading last 17th of October, 2012. “We want to acknowledge and express our appreciation of Congw. Rosenda Ann Ocampo’s firm conviction and belief why this provision should not be amended from the K+12 bill,” Palmones said. Congresswoman Ocampo was the sponsor in plenary of the said measure. “The other authors who worked hard on this bill, to-gether with the positive recommendations of DepEd and DOST helped to enlighten that this provision does not only address the lack of manpower in the basic education unit, but it also addresses the need to have teachers fully equipped and trained in the sciences for students to learn better from their mentors,” Palmones added. In a report on the 2003 Trends in Interna-tional Mathematics and Sciences Survey (TIMSS) for fourth grade students, the Philippines mathe-matics average score was 358 compared to the in-ternational average score of 495. For the sciences, the Philippines’ average score was 332 compared to the interna-tional average score of 489. In the same survey with equivalent to 8th grade student participants (aged 13 years or those who are in second year High School), the Philippines’ average Mathe-matics score was 378 out of the 466 average international score, while the country fared 377 out of a 473 average international score for the Sciences. The K+12 program aims to have significant improve-ments in the quality of education for the country’s younger pop-ulation especially in math and science. “Quality science education is one of the advocacies of AGHAM Party-List . P-Noy proclaims National Year of Rice
President Benigno S. Aquino III had declared 2013 as National Year of Rice through Proclama-tion No. 494 signed Oct. 18 to intensify the government cam-paign on achieving rice self-sufficiency. “Part of the strategy to attain rice self-sufficiency is in-tensified information campaign and social marketing to enjoin producers, consumers, and policy-maker to help achieve this goal,”
Aquino said in the Proclamation. He also said that a sustained and nationwide cam-paign is needed to boost farmers’ morale and motivate them to adopt technologies to improve farm productivity. With the theme, Sapat na Bigas, Kaya ng Pinas, the National Year of Rice was also proclaimed to encour-age the public to be responsible rice consumers. Farmers are encouraged to adopt at least three modern farm technologies while consumers are urged to reduce rice wastage. The Department of Agriculture leads the cam-paign while Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) handles its implementation. In his message to PhilRice on its 27th anniversary, Aquino said, “Your solidarity in our ongoing mission will assure the Filipino a more promising future where all our citizens have access to our basic staples… We shall reap our harvest.” The proclamation also affirmed the celebration of National Rice Awareness Month every November in pursu-ant to Proclamation No. 524 issued in 2004. Pledge for rice kicks off Rice Awareness Month
“As Filipino, I commit myself to helping conserve rice,” about a hundred PhilRice staff pledged in Filipino. They swore not to cook, scoop, or order rice more than what they can consume; and to properly cook rice - not over or undercooked. They also pledged to eat unpolished or brown rice and equally nutritious food as substitute to rice such as saba, sweet potato, and corn. “I also commit myself to disseminate these ways of being responsible rice consumers to value farmers’ hardships and support the country’s goal of providing enough food for fellow Filipinos,” they said. Pledgers are expected to keep their oath to help the government save as high as P6.2 billion on rice imports and feed 2.6 million hungry Filipinos in a year.
