Hello Everyone, At last Winter is behind us and we can now look forward to Spring. This month we have the Rivendell Flower Show and our own trip to the Southern Highlands for Open Gardens and the Tulips in Bowral. Hopefully we will also have some of the beautiful sunshine that we have enjoyed this Winter. I am looking forward to inducting another new member into the Club at this meeting and hope that you will all make her feel welcome. How fortunate we are to have such interesting guest speakers such as our last month’s and for something more diverse this month, we have a beekeeper. Many thanks, Carolyn. See you all on Friday. SEPTEMBER GUEST SPEAKER Peter McCormick Peter is an amateur beekeeper and hobbyist. He will give you an insight into how to become a backyard beekeeper and how, as a pest controller, he first became interested in bees. NO, Peter will not be bringing any bees with him but he might bring some honey! As I will be in the US at the time of this meeting, Sharon Brett has consented to fill in for me. I hope that you all enjoy Peter’s presentation.

TECH SAVVY SENIORS REPORT - AUGUST

- David & Ros At our last meeting, we continued with our Project, then looked at tips on editing images on digital devices. ‘Snapseed’ was the recommended App. We also looked at some of the latest scams and had question time. Our next meeting is in the Large Hall at 10am on Friday, 8th September. We will be working on our Project then will be looking at the latest features and tips on using Facebook and the making of Collage pictures, kindly presented by Sharon, our Facebook Guru. I would also like to recommend to all Probus members that they register with SCAMWATCH.gov.au, a Government site run in conjunction with the ACCC. Recent scams in Australia have been aimed at the over 65’s and have netted over $500 million, so be alert. Cheers David & Ros

FROM OUR ROVING REPORTERS:

(Thank you to our Roving Reporters for your contributions and photos. Linda)

TROTS NIGHT AT CLUB MENANGLE - SATURDAY, 12TH AUGUST

“HISTORY OF PRINTING”, PENRITH – 18TH AUGUST

Our Anna sent out a loud shout “Let’s all gather round and go out”. So off to the Trots we all went With bags full of coins to be spent. Everyone had lots of cash And dressed up to look mighty flash. For some the appeal was a horse For some it was just food, of course. The minutes ticked slowly on by And some members started to cry. “Why can’t I win even one race?” Said Jim, with a tear on his face. So more cheese and lollies we ate We had fun but then it got late. “Oh no, Kathy’s won yet again!” The rest of us go home in pain. Sharon Brett

On a windy Friday morning, we left Narellan to visit the Penrith Museum of Printing followed by a visit to the Warragamba Dam Visitor Centre. First stop was coffee at Nepean River in Penrith where we all enjoyed our morning tea presented to us by Mary Michell and Jean Mossman. Thank you both … we always enjoy our tea and coffee break. We then went to the letterpress printing museum. We were introduced to this form of printing, firstly by a compositor who explained the method of handset type, and to those who did not know how this worked, it was very interesting. The typecase with individual type had each size in separate cases … type sizes started with 6,8,10,12,18, 24 points and up, then the bold and Italic letters as well. So if you imagine a different case for each, now it is all within the programme of your computer!

Carolyn Cahill - hoping for a winner

Then the linotype machine was explained to us, a great improvement on the typesetting that was all done by hand, and made this composing much faster – it is the most intriguing machine in the print system that I know seeing it is all mechanical. The Sydney Morning Herald had 137 of these machines in operation with 3 eight hour shifts 7 days a week. From there we went to the printing machine section with the oldest press dated 1845 – it was hand operated and was capable of about 120 copies in a day. Then to the hand platen, on which you could feed just over 1000 in an hour, and onto the automatic machines which could print up to 5000 an hour. The volunteers who keep the museum going were very good in their explanations and their knowledge of the letterpress system which has now disappeared from our society. A lot of the equipment has now gone to India, the Philippines and other eastern countries.

CAMPBELLTOWN TOWN HALL THEATRE – “ SOUND OF MUSIC” – SATURDAY,

19TH AUGUST

NSW ART GALLERY – “ARCHIBALDS” TOUR – MONDAY, 21ST AUGUST

Our Probus Club had a good roll up for Marg’s annual visit to the Art Gallery of NSW for an early morning private guided tour of the portraits selected for hanging in the gallery. Our charming lady gallery guide was excellent providing interesting and often humorous anecdotes of the artists and their works. She, and obviously the judges, believes that Camden lad Mitch Cairns’ flat, decorative portrait of his partner is quite amazing and a worthy winner … I don’t think many of our group would agree. However, Jun Chen’s runner up portrait of Art Dealer Ray Hughes was more to my liking. My personal favourite was Jonathon Dalton’s super detailed and lifelike painting of artists Lottie Consalvo and James Drinkwater (see picture). It was once again a fascinating and enjoyable morning with plenty of post tour discussion over coffee at the Gallery Café of the variety of the paintings from traditional to photorealism, computer generated portraits and an Indigenous “portrait” that simply does not fit into established western genres.

Ken Starkey

Well … I must say that the Hills of Campbelltown were very much alive with the Sound of Music at the Saturday Matinee attended by our Probus group. Woftam Productions provided a very professional and entertaining production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s well-known musical “The Sound of Music” at the Campbelltown Town Hall Theatre, featuring many local actors and singers. The Sound of Music follows the real life story, in music and songs that we all know so well, of Austria’s Von Trapp Family after school teacher Maria becomes their new governess and brings music into their lives. Personally I thought that local Cobbitty girl Renee Cowper as Maria and Kat Shaw as Mother Abbess were outstanding in an amazing stellar cast. After the show it was coffee time followed by our usual Chinese banquet at The Flowerdrum Chinese Restaurant booked and organized by Joyce. Ken Starkey

Continued: I was amazed at the interest our members showed and the number of questions asked. It was a worthwhile visit. From there we went to the Wallacia Hotel where we enjoyed lunch. Onto the Warragamba Dam Visitor Centre where we watched films of its history and past, and on the way home we listened to some brief talks from 3 of our members who had worked in the printing industry, all of which was well received by our members. Thank you, Anna, for a great day. Tony Wolf

“DUSTY & THE DIVAS” – POWERHOUSE - THURSDAY, 24TH AUGUST

A short trip to Casula but a long detour along memory lane … well, that is my description of this show. The show we were about to see was “Dusty and the Divas” starring Sharon Rowntree and her daughter, Jessica, signing songs that were made memorable by some of the female singers from the 60’s and 70’s. The show commenced with Sharon performing some of the songs made memorable by Dusty Springfield. Moving along, more songs from the era by Cilla Black (the Lady from Liverpool), even Sandie Shaw and Petula Clark made appearances, before we “crossed” the Atlantic Ocean to the American music scene, when Connie Francis and Karen Carpenter appeared on stage for our entertainment. Next was a song that gave me ‘cold shivers’ – “Boots” was possibly the most remembered song from my time in Vietnam and Sharon did a marvelous job of this song which was performed by Nancy Sinatra in 1968. The next ‘performer’ was Dolly Parton, and Jessica provided us with an impressive show singing some of the songs that Dolly made her own. For the finale, we returned to the UK, more Dusty, and Lulu also popped in for a couple of her hits. In my opinion, this was one of the best shows that I have seen at Casula Powerhouse, and if you missed this one be sure to see it if it ever returns to our region. Thanks for organizing such a great event, Joyce. For more information, you can check out their website http://www.dustyandthedivas.com.au/
