DEAR GUESTS & VISITORS

To further our efforts to make capital improvements around the Shrine such as a renovation of our Community Room and an upgrade to our sound speaker system, your generous financial support goes a long way toward meeting these goals. Your donations are greatly appreciated.

ASSISI PARDON PORZIUNCULA PARDON is always available under the conditions the Catholic Church has stipulated.

The conditions for receiving the Porziuncula Pardon are: To receive the Porziuncula Indulgence, one must receive sacramental absolution and receive Holy Communion at Mass. Additionally, one must visit a church where one prays at least the Creed and an Our Father for the intentions of the Pope. Additionally, one must be completely free of any attachment to sin; if this condition is not met, the indulgence is partial rather then plenary. At the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi, the Pardon of Assisi may be received on October 4th, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi (in the Shrine Church); on any two days of one’s own choosing during the year (one day in the Church and one day in the Porziuncula Nuova); and as often as one makes a formal pilgrimage as part of a group to the Shrine Church or to the Porziuncula Nuova. (One may receive a plenary indulgence only once a day and it may be applied to oneself or to the soul of one of the faithfully departed.)

THANKSGIVING DAY SCHEDULE

Thursday, November 24

Mass will be at 12:15 pm, the church will close after Mass at 1:00 pm.

The National Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi, as with our Archdiocese of San Francisco,

has a mission that is rooted in the Gospels and social teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Central to that teaching is the inherent dignity and sacredness of each human being.

We educate and advocate on this dignity in relation to the unborn child, the prisoner on death row, the homeless and hungry person on our streets, the elderly, the ill and disabled faced with the threat of assisted suicide, the stranger in our midst, and the poor and marginalized in our society and throughout the world.

We are neither right nor left, Republican nor Democrat, but we formulate our agenda by the standard of human dignity that is reflected in our faith tradition.

1. It is the purpose of the National Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi to provide more abundant means of salvation, through the rich liturgical and devotional life of the Roman Catholic Church for the Christian faithful, including those who come as pilgrims from around the world to the City of San Francisco and the greater San Francisco Bay Area, who seek to encounter the living God through religious worship and special devotion to Saint Francis of Assisi and the Franciscan saints.

2. It is the further purpose of the National Shrine to welcome, share, and extend this same spiritual experience and devotion to Saint Francis of Assisi and the Franciscan saints to pilgrims and visitors of all faiths, religions, denominations, and nationalities.

3. The Capuchin Franciscan Friars (OFM Cap.) and Staff of the National Shrine, therefore, provide a pastoral (ie: welcoming and prayerful) environment with the hope that in the spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi, spiritual nourishment healing and reconciliation will be found by all who visit the Shrine.

CAROLING ALONGSIDE THE MANGER

With Advent and the holidays approaching, the Shrine is working to start a new tradition of Christmas caroling to accompany our Nativity scene which will be set up for the season in the front of the church. The dates for this sharing of music will likely be in the week preceding Christmas Sunday, December 25. If you know of a choir, or are a member of a chorale group and would be interested in participating, please contact the Shrine office during business hours, (415) 986-4557.

2016

Dear Friends of the Capuchins,

Formation is the journey men take to become a Capuchin Franciscan. For Br. Nikolas Barth, this journey began growing up as a Christian. In reflecting on his call to Capuchin life, Br. Niko reflects on his unique vocation journey.

“As a part of my application to the Capuchin Franciscan Order, the title of my personal autobiography still rings true, “I have no idea what I am doing.” It’s a nerve-racking reality to live with, but I am affirmed in God’s response, “Yes, but I do.”

During my Capuchin novitiate year, I reconciled with discerning God’s will to the best of my ability, and I definitely encountered God in deep and profound ways. This gave me the strength and assurance to profess my religious vows, even though I did not completely know God’s will for my life on the day of Capuchin profession.

Reflecting on my personal journey of discernment today, I see God has blessed me with innumerable gifts, the most memorable of which indicate a compatibility with His call for me. The challenge is that I always want one more gift, one more affirmation; however, as I reached the point of this important decision to become a Capuchin friar, I finally realized my role to play in God’s grace. I see now as much as God has been affirming me in my new vocation, I need to acknowledge and respond to this affirmation, and with that I responded by professing Poverty, Chastity, and Obedience as a Capuchin Franciscan friar.”

Today, Br. Niko continues to train to answer God’s call to service. Along with other young men studying in the Capuchin community, he lives at St. Conrad’s House of Studies in Berkeley and studies Theology and Philosophy at the Graduate Theological Union.

November 19: 1:00 – 4:30 pm St. Matthias Parish, Fr. Lacey Hall, 1685 Cordilleras Rd., Redwood City

Liz Vugrinecz Contact: 650-366-9544 Ext. 12 stmatthiasparish.org

“We Don’t Get the Mystery of the Trinity – It Gets Us” is the theme of this afternoon retreat to prepare for the Christmas season. The facilitator is Fr. Dave Pettingill, who will help attendees see Advent in a whole new light. Advent is not only about waiting for Jesus but about look-ing anew at our relationship with God and with each oth-er. In doing so, we seek Jesus and He (and the Trinity) seeks us. The afternoon ends with Fr. Pettingill celebrat-ing Saturday evening Mass at 5:00 pm. All are welcome. Donations gratefully accepted. To register, contact Liz Vugrinecz, above.
