Thank You

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers who gave so selflessly of their time to man stalls and BBQs at the federal election on Saturday. Your generosity and efforts are greatly appreciated.

NAPLAN

Congratulations to our Year 3 and Year 5 students who completed NAPLAN online last week. I am happy to report that most sessions were completed without issue. Some minor technical issues in one session were quickly rectified and did not result in any distraction or disadvantage for students completing the tests. I was impressed with the patience, calmness and effort displayed by our Year 3 and Year 5 students last week.

The robots have arrived!

A huge thank you to the P&C who last week approved approximately $30000 to support our STEM program. We have already made our first purchases and I am excited to reveal that... the robots have arrived! Over the next few weeks Mr Crawford will unpack and set up the equipment for use by all students. I am looking forward to seeing our students learning with and engaging with these new technologies.

Cross Country Carnival

On Friday we had our annual Cross Country Carnival and it was another fantastic event with great determination and Yarrawarrah spirit on display. It was very pleasing to see all students from Kinder to Year 6 doing their best in what is a really tough event. The list of results is published separately in this edition.

As always, a huge thankyou goes to our parent helpers, without whom these carnivals could not operate in such a successful manner.

The Zone Cross Country Carnival will take place at Heathcote Oval this Friday, 24th May. Eligible students will receive a permission note which should have been returned already.

Congratulations to all students who ran on the day, you did yourselves and your families proud.

Library News

Our 2019 Outback Book Drive, totalling 200 kgs of books is packed and on its way to Moree from where it will be distributed to families and students living on stations in and around Lightning Ridge, Walgett and Bourke. Students in these areas receive education via School of the Air and twice a year meet for a school camp to meet and mix with other students. With no libraries or book shops within coo-ee, our excess will give these students much need access to great literature. A pop up library where you never have to return the books!

Sincere thanks to all the wonderful donations from YPS families. Your books are going to good hands and a great cause. Thanks to our fabulous supporters below; all of whom donated new books to the project and a final thanks to Land Transport at Wetherill Park for freight free transport from Sydney to Moree. Book Week

The theme for this year’s Book Week is ‘Reading is My Super Power.” Last year’s theme was Find Your Treasure in books. Who could forget the epic treasure chest entries that YPS families submitted to that competition. So it’s on again!

All students are invited to participate in an art work competition creating a poster on Reading is My Super Power. Special poster and special prizes. The rules of engagement should you accept this mission are:

• Size not larger than A3

• Entries due the first week back in term 3 so loads of time to get creative. Should we ever get a rainy day this is the perfect answer to holiday boredom.

• The poster and presentation framework must be totally homemade. Use recycled materials (wood, bark, sticks, fabric,) from home; no need to spend a cent. Dads and grandads - hammers at the ready??!!

• Presentation must be either: a stand up frame or a wall hanging.

• Examples:

• The competition is optional but there will • be prizes galore for most original

entries. • Got to be in it to win it!

Uniform Shop

The running of the shop is run by parent volunteers and at the moment they are in the process of establishing a schedule as to volunteer availability.

In the meantime if you want specific items, please message Nicole Roberts on 0410 587 363 and she will do her best to fulfil your request. Please feel free to approach the P&C if you would like to volunteer your time.

CHICKENS Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to care for the chickens over the weekend.

All weekends are now covered until the end of Term 2.

If you would like to volunteer for Term 3, please see the office to put your name down on the list.

Sutherland Shire Schools Music Festival 2019

Tickets on Sale Dear Parents/Caregivers

Our school is once again participating in the Sutherland Shire Schools Music Festival at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre (SEC) in August. Tickets for this event will only be available online. This year the sale date for concerts will be staggered.

Tickets for Concerts 1-5 go on sale on Wednesday 12 June 2018

On this day, tickets will be available to anyone wishing to purchase on a first-in, first served basis. As tickets traditionally sell out for some of the concerts, we recommend you order yours as early as possible. In the unlikely event that there are unsold tickets for a particular concert, these will be available at the box office on afternoon/night of the concert.

Tickets this year are $19.50. Due to health and safety regulations, the Sutherland Entertainment Centre will not allow children to sit on parents’ laps. Each person attending the concert will require a ticket.

The Sutherland Entertainment Centre will be managing the sale of tickets this year. To order and purchase tickets, go to: http://www.suthentcent.com.au and then select the “Sutherland Shire Schools Music Festival” link

There will be fifteen concerts available to purchase tickets to so it is very important that you select the correct concert/s.

Our school will be participating in the following concerts:

Group/s Concert/s Performance Date Tickets on sale from Junior Choir (Year 2) 2/3 Girls Dance Group

Concert 5- Matinee 1pm Thursday 15 August Wednesday 12 June

Junior Choir (Year 2) 2/3 Girls Dance Group

Concert 5 7pm Friday 16 August Wednesday 12 June

Senior Choir 4/5 Girls Dance Group

Concert 4 7pm Thursday 15 August Wednesday 12 June

When your booking is complete you will have the opportunity to print your tickets. We strongly recommend that you do so and then keep these in a safe place. You will require these tickets on the night of the concert for entry. If you are unable to print your own tickets, you can show your PDF ticket on your device (eg phone/ tablet) on the night to the usher.

When ordering your tickets, you will have the opportunity to pre-purchase a printed program for $5.00. This program contains all of the concerts as well as artwork by students from the Shire and makes a wonderful souvenir. Your pre purchased program/s will be delivered to the school prior to the event.

If you have any questions about this please contact the school.

Yours faithfully

Hi Everyone, Families Week, at Camp Australia Yarrawarrah last week, was full of fun activities and learning. Our Family Teddy Bear Breakfast and Family Teddy Bear Picnic Afternoon Tea were extremely popular with many parents, relatives and carers joining us for a snack. Last Thursday morning and afternoon we invited our children and families to bring their teddy bears (or stuffed toys) to celebrate Families Week by joining us for a breakfast of banana bread, fruit salad, cereal & toast and/or a picnic afternoon tea (or later snack if parents/guardians arrive later) of banana bread, Rice Bubble hedgehogs, popcorn, sandwiches and fruit and vegetables. Parents who were in a hurry to get to work on time enjoyed a piece of banana bread (from our Healthy Cookbook) on the way to work. Thank you to those people who were able to share the day with us and wrote beautiful comments in our reflection journal. It coincided with the School Open Day, so it was a wonderful "connecting with the community" day. One of the children created a beautiful sign to advertise our special day. The children wrote poems and songs today about families and performed/read them out after afternoon tea-time one day. We also played the game "Family Reunion" which the children enjoyed and started our "What's in a name?" poster/chart which shows the different ways family related words can be spoken in other languages. Some of the children created "Family chains" to take home and some participated in our "Create a Leaf Family" activity. We are building our community out of LEGO, including the local bakery, IGA, cars, Windmill Shopping Centre, school etc. We have also played rock, paper, scissors and learnt a song about family members. We also discussed what "Stronger Families, Stronger Communities" means. It was such a wonderful week celebrating our families.

Page 9: The Old Bush Telegraph - Yarrawarrah · 2019-10-25 · 631107 Page 1 The Old Bush Telegraph Newsletter of Yarrawarrah Public School Issue 8 Term 2– Week 4 Wednesday, 22 May 2019

This week the children have played handball, organised a football kicking competition, made bees and bee hives from recycled materials, big blocks, connector discs as part of World Bee Day activities, talked about how we can all volunteer as part of National Volunteer Week, made beetroot dip from the Healthy Cookbook and had lots of fun with all the arts & crafts and toys at Camp Australia.

Due to a change in Camp Australia’s Emergency Drill schedule we will be having a different type of drill fortnightly on different days. We will strive to ensure that as many children and Educators as possible have an opportunity, to participate in these important activities. We complete evacuation, lock down, medical emergency, Stop, Drop & Roll & Get Down Low and Go, Go, Go drills and a few other drills. We thank families and friends for your patience if we are in the middle of a drill when you arrive.

Please join us next week for our Reconciliation Week activities.

Holiday Club bookings have now opened. Please visit the Camp Australia website to book into a program close to home or work. It looks like a fun program with many activities planned.
