Initial responses to Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation

Amoris Laetitia - “The Joy of Love” were predictable.

Some interpret it as an endorsement of a conservative

reiteration of basic church doctrine, while others see it as a

tacit approval to move forward in a new direction. It

should be remembered that this document is the fruit of

several years effort that included surveys to all the

Catholics of the world, conferences around the world and

two extraordinary synods of bishops held in Rome.

While the historic teaching of the church is not changed,

Pope Francis does make the observation that not all

discussions of doctrinal, moral or pastoral issues need to

be settled by interventions from the Magisterium of the

Church. “Unity of teaching and practice is necessary,

but this does not preclude different ways of interpreting

some aspects of that teaching or drawing certain

consequences from it,” the Pope writes.

The document does not give any real definitive direction

on burning issues like Communion for the Divorced and

remarried. The real change is in the area of pastoral

approach, understanding and compassion. “No one can

be condemned forever” the Pope writes, “because that is

not the logic of the Gospel; Here I am not speaking only

of the divorced and remarried, but of everyone, in

whatever situation they find themselves.”

You could say that the goal of the exhortation is summed

up this sentence from the 206 pages of the document,

when he emphasizes and appeals to everyone, especially

pastors, to help each person find “his or her proper way of

participating in the ecclesial community and thus

experience being touched by an unmerited,

unconditional, and gratuitous mercy.”

So while not changing the fundamental Church teaching

on the issue of divorce and Communion, he does manage

to open a window to those searching for a way back,

calling for “responsible, personal and pastoral

discernment of particular cases.”

Chapter 8 of the document might be the most significant

and most controversial section of the document, in which

he makes the statement:

“it can no longer be said that those in any irregular

union are living in a state of mortal sin and are deprived

of Sanctifying Grace,” - the implication being, that

following a process of discernment and prayer, people in a

second relationship might now find a way to Communion,

as they are not necessarily in a state of mortal sin.

“The Eucharist” the Pope writes “is not a prize for the

perfect but a powerful nourishment and medicine for the

weak.”

Bishop O’Connell comments that in this Exhortation,

Francis is encouraging deep and careful thought on

everyone’s part about what the church has to offer to the

faithful from its treasury of revelation and grace, what

they mean and how they apply to real life.

One commentary in America Magazine points out that the

concept of integration is the key element in the text. It

emphasizes the importance of reaching out to everyone “to

help each person find his or her proper way of

participating in the ecclesial community and thus

experience being touched by and unmerited,

unconditional and gratuitous mercy.”

Eamon Martin, Archbishop of Dublin, characterizes the

exhortation as “a warning to a church that could be out

of touch. If the church resorts to a whole body of

doctrine, moral, bio-ethical teaching” he writes “and

fails to take into account the complexity and difficulty in

the day to day lives of people, then the church will be out

of touch.”

In the very black and white culture in which we live,

where people like to reduce even complex matters to

simple “yes” or “no” some people will be disappointed

that the Pope did not seem to change any particular

doctrine or teaching of the church. Some people would

like the Pope to say “yes” or “no” on subjects that are

more complex than we wish to admit.

Perhaps the best advice of all are the words of Pope

Francis himself: “I do not recommend a rushed reading

of the text as it is a document that addresses an

extraordinary varied scenario.”

ST. CATHARINES CLASSICS

St. Catharine-St. Margaret Parish

FIFTH ANNUAL RETREAT

Two difficulties faced, at various times, by those vigilant in

prayer, are DISTRACTION and DRYNESS. We all hit these

points many times in our lives and need to overcome them. We

see in Jesus a man who always withdrew from the crowd to a

peaceful place in profound prayer after a hard day’s work. St.

Catharine’s Classics offers just that, to our parishioners and all

others who wish to come. Please join us in the quiet

surroundings of San Alfonso Retreat House and take the

opportunity to re-examine ourselves to find that extra food for

the journey and so deepen our relationship with God.

Thus says The Lord: “Be still and know that I am

God” (ps46:10)

On the Lighter Side……

An elderly man stopped at a hearing

aid center and asked about prices.

“We have them from $25,000 down to

$1.50.” the salesman said. “What’s the

$25,000 model like?” he asked. “Well

it translates into three languages and

has the latest electronics.”

“What about the $1.50 model?” the

man enquired. “Well it is this button

attached to a string” the salesman

replied. “How does it work?” the man

asked..

“It doesn’t! but if you put the button in

your ear and the string in your pocket,

you’ll be amazed how loud people will

talk.”
