From the Pastor’s Corner

1st Sunday of Advent

S tay awake! ... Be prepared." The advice is clear enough. We'd like to be

vigilant. We'd like to be ready. But on its own, the desire to be alert isn't

necessarily enough to keep us from drifting off into a spiritual siesta. When the ultimate

Advent comes--when Jesus returns--we don't want to be the one left standing alone in the field.

Advent is a time to pay attention. Jesus asks us to be ready to greet him at any hour.

Especially in this month of holiday hustle and bustle, how can we stay constantly focused on

welcoming Christ? St. Paul gives us a hint in today's epistle: "Put on the armor of light... Put on

the Lord Jesus Christ" (Rom 13:12, 14). Just as light hinders physical sleep, so too the light of

Christ prevents spiritual slumber. When we invite Jesus' Spirit into our hearts, it's like keeping a

vigil light flickering in the window of our souls. We may go about our business, but that

expectant flame never burns out. So when Jesus comes again--even like a thief in the night--he

will find us ready and waiting.

We bless one candle each week in Advent. Let us ask God to bless our family.

Help us to be for others

what this family has been to us—

a helper in times of need

and a source of abundant blessings

to share with others.

We ask this through Christ,

who is the Alpha and Omega.

Amen.

God of new beginnings,

today we begin a new year in our church

with the image of a wreath.

We ask you to bless our family.

Help us to see our family life as a wreath,

without a beginning and without an end.

As we light this one candle,

we recall how you have changed

our family since we last gathered

around the Advent wreath.

THE JESSE TREE is based upon the Scripture in Isaiah 11:1-2: “But a shoot

shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and

from his roots a bud shall blossom. The

spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him.”

Jesse, the father of David, is the “stump” of the tree. The lineage of Christ, the top of the tree, is depicted through ornaments on the tree, which portray a symbol of an ancestor or prophecy of Christ. Some symbols include Noah’s Ark, Jacob’s Ladder, manna, Bethlehem and the Star of David. This tradition dates back to the Middle Ages. Each day, an ornament is added and the Scripture read, God’s plan for redemption through Christ is revealed.

Some trees have as few as five ornaments, while others have dozens. The Jesse Tree transforms the Christmas tree into a Family Tree for Jesus and provides us with a way of

remembering God’s plan for mankind’s salvation.

Jesus told his disciples that we must always behave the way God wants us to. He compares it to a man who leaves home and leaves his servants in charge. When he comes home he expects that they

have acted properly.
