Welcome

I’m delighted to welcome you to The Point’s 2013 Spring Season. This season we are pleased to announce our new Artists Development Programme, Making Space. Thanks to funding from Arts Council England and Esmée Fairbairn Foundation we are launching a series of residencies, events and opportunities which will allow artists from across the UK and beyond to make their work in Eastleigh and to connect to our audiences. Expect more post-show discussions, opportunities for new artists, digital interaction and chances to get up close to the work you see on the stage - look out for shows marked as a Making Space event. Spring is also an exciting time for The Point as we embark on our two year European collaboration DanSCe Dialogues (p6). Why not check out our new Creation Space website for interviews with artists www.thecreationspace.co.uk Or pop along to one of our “Meet the artists” where you can discuss and

develop conversations with the artists after you’ve seen the show.

Spring 2013 will be my last season at The Point, as after three very happy years here I step down to take up the artistic directorship of Derby Theatre. The Point really is a unique and special place and I’ve enjoyed seeing it flourish and grow over the last three years. The Point combines a highly skilled and committed staff team, a genuine commitment to artists and audiences and a fantastic programme of community development. I’ve enjoyed getting to know our audiences and participants here and I know for certain I will be back to visit. I look forward to seeing you here.

bgroup presents

Just As We Are Thursday 7th March 7.30pm

Me, us, all of us...

bgroup returns with a brand new show by choreographer Ben Wright. Just As We Are opens at walking pace, moves through a series of solos and duets and culminates in a spectacular group finale. It is a tribute to an act of uncertainty, an invitation to the audience to consider the level of its participation…how will you share the moment?

Ben Wright is an internationally-commissioned artist whose work moves between extremes - sometimes dark and mysterious, sometimes funny and flippant. His extensive choreographic work has been performed at The Metropolitan Opera New York, in London’s West End and at the The Point in Eastleigh. No matter the

“Probing, bonkers.... leaves you effervescent with compassion and aching for a hug”– The Stage

size of venue, Ben’s passion for creating extraordinary experiences and curious yet accessible work is the driving force behind bgroup’s growing popularity and success.

For Just As We Are, Ben Wright is joined by an exceptional team of collaborators – five performers, lighting designer Guy Hoare, visual artist and photographer Mark Vessey and costume designer Theo Clinkard.

2Faced Dance Company presents

Out of His Skin Wednesday 13th March 7.30pm

Bored with life, the monotony of the everyday and trying to find his place in the world, one man goes on a journey of self discovery. Pushing every available boundary and risking everything until there is nothing left he searches for the next high, the next hit and the next big thing.

Using their trademark urban contemporary language, 2Faced Dance Company return with a new full-length work choreographed by Artistic Director Tamsin Fitzgerald. Unpredictable, fierce, visceral and tender, the country’s leading all male contemporary

company continue in finding a way to connect to audiences that strikes at the soul.

Out of His Skin explores society’s obsession with the extreme and reminds us what it means to just be normal.

DanSCe Dialogues 2We are collaborating with seven French and English partners to launch an exciting programme of exchanges, training and performances and touring opportunities.

European project DanSCe Dialogues 2 will see the creation of a two-year cross-Channel programme, offering unique experiences and opportunities to dance artists, choreographers and companies in Southern England and Normandy and Brittany in France.

Having been successful in our bid to the European fund INTERREG to fund the rich and textured programme, DanSCe Dialogues 2 starts this Spring and runs until October 31, 2014. We are delighted to present Groupe Entorse (adjacent) our first presentation from this collaboration.

Other highlights of the project will include:

n Bringing together English and French touring professionals, promoters and artists form the UK and Normandy, who will focus on increasing the awareness of the practices and working approach of each participant, developing cross-Channel exchanges and support the start of future linked projects.

n An exchange of masterclasses giving UK-based artists the opportunity to learn from international choreographers and teachers; and to then disseminate their learning in France.

n Residencies allowing international artists to make and premiere their work in the UK and for UK-based artists to develop work in France.

Look out for shows marked with the DanSCe Dialogues logo throughout the next two years - this is a unique experience to see work from across the Channel in your local theatre.

Samuel Lefeuvre / Raphaëlle Latini / Nicolas Olivier presents

Groupe Entorse - ACCIDENS (ce qui arrive)Thursday 18th April 7.30pm

“Like a contorted puppet, the dancer recovers, in a painful but moving effort, a frail but beautiful verticality”.

Groupe Entorse are based near Caen in Normandy and have toured ACCIDENS all over France. We are proud to present their first appearance in the UK as part of DanSCe Dialogues 2 – a cross Channel European funded cultural exchange with 7 other partners.

The sound from the turntables acts directly on the dancer’s body, creating a synthetic one, taking control of its tendons, its nerves. It helps it break into new connections when the original situation is out of reach, to find another state of contentment.

By confronting extreme physical states with powerful soundscapes, Samuel Lefeuvre and Raphaëlle Latini question the notion of resilience, and the means we have to overcome a traumatic event. The light of Nicolas Olivier immerses this correspondence in a changing space, sometimes minimalist and open to the gaze, sometimes mysterious and gloomy. He creates these atmospheres in particular with a subtle use of smoke.

Two Destination Language presents

Fallen Fruit - now here, now gone Thursday 28th February 7.30pm

A journey through love, childhood and breaking free in this solo performance.

To coincide with the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Katherina Radeva revisits memories of growing up in her native Bulgaria before and after the fall of the Iron Curtain. The performance questions our perceptions of freedom, whether walls protect or expose us, and asks why we are so curious about the other side.

Using 200 small boxes and a microphone, three fragmented narratives follow the stories of fictional TV presenter Jiji, a couple on the verge of breaking up, and the very first moments of a little girl encountering the West.

Hannah Jane Walker and Chris Thorpe presents

The oh f**k moment Thursday 25th April 7pm & 9pm

You just f**ked up. Now what? Sometimes, f**k-ups are so massive, there’s no way back.

In this Fringe First winning show, poet Hannah Jane Walker and Chris Thorpe examine the poetic guts of mistakes in a bundle of words and strip lighting. F**king up is the truest, funniest, most terrifying moment you can experience.

You will make a mistake, maybe you’ll learn from it.

‘The oh f**k moment’ is a conversation around a desk for brave souls to hold their hands up and admit they f**ked up, or for people to laugh at us because we did.

Developed at The Nightingale Theatre and The Junction.

“a brilliant celebration of our mistakes & evolutionary reflexes”– The Guardian ****

Tickets: £12 Conc. £10 (To spare your blushes, if you’d like to book for the award winning Oh F**k moment, simply refer to it as the ‘Oh Moment’ at point of booking – we’ll know what you mean!)

Robin Ince: The Importance of Being Interested Saturday 2nd March 8.00pm

Award-winning comedian and science enthusiast Robin Ince follows up his Happiness Through Science show with a look at his favourite scientists – Charles Darwin and Richard Feynman. Find out why we have eyebrows, why bald dogs have bad teeth, how heavy metal music makes pigs deaf and why spaghetti snaps into four pieces. It is a loving look into the minds of two giants of human imagination who changed our worldview.

He’ll also stop off on the way to look at some of the more bizarre views of early science – is the ostrich really the offspring of the union of a gnat and a giraffe? (No)
