Reading 1: 1 Kgs 3:5, 7–12 The L appeared to Solomon in a dream at night. God said, “Ask something of me and I will give it to you.” Solomon answered: “O L , my God, you have made me, your servant, king to succeed my father David; but I am a mere youth, not knowing at all how to act. I serve you in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a people so vast that it cannot be numbered or counted. Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong. For who is able to govern this vast people of yours?” The L was pleased that Solomon made this request. So God said to him: “Because you have asked for this—not for a long life for yourself, nor for riches, nor for the life of your enemies, but for understanding so that you may know what is right—I do as you requested. I give you a heart so wise and understanding that there has never been anyone like you up to now, and after you there will come no one to equal you.” Responsorial Psalm Ps 119:57, 72, 76–77, 127–128, 129–130 R. (97a) Lord, I love your commands. I have said, O L , that my part is to keep your words. The law of your mouth is to me more precious than thousands of gold and silver pieces. R. Lord, I love your commands. Let your kindness comfort me according to your promise to your servants. Let your compassion come to me that I may live, for your law is my delight. R. Lord, I love your commands. For I love your command more than gold, however fine. For in all your precepts I go forward; every false way I hate. R. Lord, I love your commands. Wonderful are your decrees; therefore I observe them. The revelation of your words sheds light, giving understanding to the simple. R. Lord, I love your commands. Reading 2: Rom 8:28–30 Brothers and sisters: We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined he also called; and those he called he also justified; and those he justified he also glorified.

Gospel: Mt 13:44–52 [44–56] In the shorter form of the reading, the passages in brackets are omitted. Jesus said to his disciples: “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it. [Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea, which collects fish of every kind. When it is full they haul it ashore and sit down to put what is good into buckets. What is bad they throw away. Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. “Do you understand all these things?” They answered, “Yes.” And he replied, “Then every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.”]

"Ask and you shall receive. Seek and you shall find. Knock and it will be opened to you." Ask in prayer to know your vocation! Seek and find ways to serve. In an era of Catholicism in which catch-phrases such as “called to serve” have been overused to the point of becoming

clichés, we risk forgetting how central service is to the Christian life. The minutes of our lives are consumed in an incessant cascade of apparently important and urgent things to do. Doesn’t it happen, however, that in the midst of all this we actually miss any number of opportunities to serve? Called to serve, yes, but we miss the call! And our service gets sidelined. If service to my brothers and sisters is not an ordinary element of my daily life as a Christian, I can be sure that I am not living my baptismal call to the fullest. Pray that God will help you discover His plan for your life each and every day. ---- The Vocation Ministry Team

Attention all Catholic young men entering grades 9-12! Do you realize that Christ has a great plan for your life! You are invited to attend a Priesthood Discernment Day to spend time with other young men your age who are considering the Lord’s call in their life. This event will include the opportunity to listen to seminarians share their story of God’s call, participate in Mass and Eucharistic Adoration, and time to enjoy the brotherhood with other young Catholic men. Priesthood Discernment Day will take place July 27th at Christ Our Shepherd Center. If you are interested, need more information, or wish to register, please visit gbgvocations.org.

SAINT MARTHA (first century) Feast Day: July 29

Whether you find Martha Stewart admirable or annoying, she has the perfect patron saint. Luke describes Martha—saint, not Stewart—as “burdened with much serving” (Luke 10:40). About Mary, seated, listening to Jesus, Martha complained, “Do you not care that my sister has

left me by myself to do the serving?” Jesus’ response, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things . . . Mary has chosen the better part” (10:41, 42), suggests to some the superiority of the contemplative life, leaving the rest of us, supporting families, earning livings, (helping others?), as second-class Christians. But Luke introduces Martha and Mary immediately after Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan, whom Jesus recommends as a model of practical compassion, concluding, “Go and do likewise” (10:37). Go and do! Sit and listen! Discipleship is never either/or but both/and. Jesus ministered in prayerful silence and hospitable service. Monastic calendars add Martha’s sister, Mary, and brother, Lazarus, calling all three “hosts of the Lord,” recalling their welcome of Jesus to their home in Bethany, reminding us Whom we welcome whenever we extend summertime hospitality! —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

D : Part of accompanying people toward deeper relationship with Christ in the sacraments is learning how to discern the action of the Spirit in their lives. Discernment is what we see in today’s gospel. We look deeply and search for what is good in a person’s life and help him or her discard what is destructive or not life-giving. For what is good, we give them ways to strengthen that grace and build upon it. For what needs to be discarded, we encourage them with prayer and support them by our own example of conversion. Discernment is truly a pastoral help that points out the treasures in someone’s life and guides that person to cherish these unique gifts from God.
