I was watching television recently and came across the program American Ninja Warrior. I had heard others speak of it and one of my nephews in Ireland is a big fan. The enthusiastic energy and passion of these disciplined competitors is impressive. Equally impressive are the family and friends they bring to cheer them on. The course is anything, and I mean anything, but easy. I am sure that it takes months of training to simply get ready for the qualifying events. As it happened, while I watched there was a competitor by the name of Sean Bryan. Immediately I noted the colors of his team—they were the papal colors. Then I heard the announcer say that Sean was referred to as the “Papal Ninja.” Naturally I stayed with the program to see how Sean would do as, according to the commentator, only two others so far that night had completed the acrobatic course of challenges. I was rooting for Sean, not because I knew him, but because he was the Papal Ninja and it seemed the right thing to do. I wondered if Pope Francis was sitting somewhere in the Vatican watching also. If he knew about it I bet he would be. Sean qualified for the next round. I was thrilled and then switched channels to catch up on some news, turned that off quickly enough and went on to something more appealing - sleep. The following day I googled Sean Bryan to find out more about the who, what and why of the Papal Ninja. Sean graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Physics. He also has a Masters in Theology. He competed as a gymnast for that school’s gymnastic team and he became interested in competing on Ninja Warrior as he wanted to use social media to proclaim what it means to be fully alive or, as he notes, “to animate the sleeping giant of Catholic laity.” Now this captured my interest. While in college, a fellow student asked Sean if he wanted to go to Mass with him. Sean was intrigued that a college-aged man just like himself was comfortable enough with his faith to ask someone to join him at Mass. So Sean began to attend Mass and began to discern his intentional discipleship with Jesus and what his vocation in life was to be. Initially he joined the Salesians of Don Bosco, as their work with young people and education interested him. This discernment after four years was to deepen his relationship with Jesus and, while leaving the formation program, he stayed with the Salesians in another capacity. Through his ongoing education Sean was afforded the opportunity to meet others, young and old, who were on fire with their faith. He came to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Mass and rituals of the Church. His thesis was written under the title, “The Scriptural Notion of Liturgy as a Hermeneutic for Liturgical Participation: Toward the Animation of the Faithful in the Life and Mission of the Church”—quite a title. It was perhaps the last part of that title that inspired him to do something he had wanted to do: American Ninja Warrior. As providence would have it there was a gym that would prepare him for such an arduous task in his locality. The Ninja program has over 80,000 applicants each year and Sean made it on his first try. He was one of 600 accepted nationwide. When asked what he hoped to accomplish as Papal Ninja, Sean uses the title to bring understanding. Papal is related to the office of the Pope and a ninja is a skilled warrior who uses his gifts to help accomplish a mission. In this sense Sean sees himself as being sent on a mission to encourage others to live not just for themselves but for Christ and the mission of His Church. He understands that each of us has a mission given to us by Christ and he is using this platform to bring attention to that. Using the media in the arena of sport and fitness to remind us that we have a mission is in line with Jesus’ instruction that we use the things of this world to advance the mission of the Kingdom. In an interview, when asked about the correlation between “fitness” and “Catholic spirituality”, Sean responded that in order to do that which is “Catholic” we must condition our mental actions, our physical actions, and our rational actions in a way that is fitting for our Lord. In the integration of mind, body and soul we bring ourselves completely to the mission that the Lord has entrusted to each of His disciples. Sean’s message is one of courage, reminding us that we should not have low expectations of ourselves and that each of us has something to offer. I certainly will not be running off to prepare for American Ninja Warrior any time soon, or ever for that matter. Yet we are all encouraged to find creative ways to bring the mission and the message of the Gospel to others. Sean is doing that as the “Papal Ninja”—it really is ingenious of him and the Lord. Second Reading: Romans 12:1-2 Paul tells the Christians to make sacrifices to avoid the trappings of the times, and to do God’s will.
Gospel: Matthew 16:21-27 Jesus tries to make his disciples realize that by following him, they will endure suffering, degradation, and death. He tells them that they must deny themselves and take up the cross in order to be his disciples.

While we have had no fundraisers yet for our sister parish, St. Paul’s in Haiti, $10,125 has been donated to our sister parish by generous parishioners. $5,ooo was wired to Fr. Theo recently so that they can move forward in providing a rectory for him to live in. The project is estimated to cost $26,000. Once completed, the next project is the church building. If you feel moved to participle in assisting the project at this time, simply send your gift made out to St. Vincent de Paul and write Haiti Project in the memo line. Once members of our twinning committee are back from summer vacation we will be planning more. At this time it is expected that Fr. Theo will be here during the last week of September to visit our parish. This will also coincide with our patronal feast day and the annual volunteer appreciation dinner. OUR PARISH HAITI PROJECT
The Diocese of Paterson is hosting the 2017 Marian Pilgrimage this October. The trip will take place on Saturday, October 21st. We urge you to participate in this year’s Diocesan Pilgrimage to the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
There are two options to choose from: a two day trip which includes visits to the St. Jude Shrine, the Baltimore Basilica and the National Shrine in Washington DC; or the one full day trip. We ask that you sign up as soon as possible for this Pilgrimage as space is limited.

SHRINE OF ST. JOSEPH RECOVERY MASS
The Shrine hosts a monthly Recovery Mass on the second Saturday of every month from 12:00 to 1:30pm. Mass is followed by an Intercessory Prayer Session. Come pray in community for

Do you have an extra hour and a half a week to share with a Veteran? Consider joining our Volunteer Meal Mate Program!!
Volunteer Meal Mate responsibilities include the following: providing companionship, encouragement and feeding assistance for the Veterans during meal times. All prospective volunteers are required to attend processing and training prior to their assignment. A training session is scheduled for Tuesday, September 19th.

DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS LYONS CAMPUS
The Shrine of Saint Joseph will host a two-day workshop entitled : “The Healing of Mind, Body and Spirit.” The presenter will be Fr. Tony D’Souza, S.J. The workshop will be held on Friday, September 22nd from 7:00pm to 9:00pm and on Saturday, September 23rd from 9:00am to 5:00pm in the Shrine Auditorium. The workshop will conclude with Mass. Family and friend support group sessions are offered at Trinity House, Stirling for family and friends of those effected by addiction. These meetings are held the last Wednesday of each month at 7:30pm. The next meeting will be August 30th The evening features discussions, speakers, spiritual consolation and light refreshments. If you or someone you know is suffering and would benefit from an evening of sharing and community support please consider attending one or more of these sessions.
RECOVERY MINISTRY
Just Us Kids is offering a full day Pre K and Kindergarten curriculum for the 2017-2018 academic school year. Classes will be held in the Pastoral Center at St. Vincent de Paul Parish. The Learning Center is directed by the former St. Vincent de Paul School
administrator and Early Childhood teacher Mrs. Maryann Pratola.
The Learning Center features a family and faith based curriculum that follows Core Standards and is differentiated to meet the needs of each student.
The class curriculum program begins on Tuesday, September 5th and will continue through the school year ending in June, 2018

St. Vincent de Paul’s 15th Annual Women’s Retreat,
Fr. Dennis Berry, from the Shrine of St. Joseph, will be this year’s Spiritual Director for the Retreat which will take place on Friday, September 15th through Sunday, September 17th. The theme for this year’s Retreat is Becoming Communion with God, One Another and All Creation. The Retreat will be held at Delbarton Retreat Center, Mendham, NJ. The Caregivers Coalition of Morris County is sponsoring a Caregiver Café on Tuesday,
September 5th from 6pm to 7:30pm at the Visiting Nurse Association of Northern NJ,
175 South St., Morristown. The Café offers a time and place for caregivers to gather, unwind and
