Serving Marion and surrounding counties for over 30 years.

This January, during National Blood Donor Month, the American Red Cross encourages people to roll up their sleeves to give blood to help maintain a su๏ฟฝ cient blood supply for patients.

Since 1970, National Blood Donor Month has been observed in January to not only honor blood and platelet donors, but also to help increase dona-tions during the winter months. Maintaining a suf-ficient blood supply for patients is di๏ฟฝ cult at this time of year because extreme winter weather and seasonal illnesses o๏ฟฝ en impact donor turnout.

Karla Essmiller became a blood donor in college, but the importance of giving blood hit home when several family

members had medical emergencies. โ€œIt only takes once sitting in a hospital, praying that your loved one will live through the day, to know how thankful you are for every single thing done to help them,โ€ she said. โ€œDonating blood is a simple gi๏ฟฝ that I can make that may help up to three people live another day. That makes me feel like a hero.โ€

๏ฟฝ e Red Cross encour-ages eligible donors to resolve to give blood regu-larly, beginning in January. Donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with types AB, O, B nega-tive and A negative.

To make an appointment to donate blood, download the free Red Cross Blood Donor App from app stores, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Upcoming area blood donation opportunities are listed below.

Clinton County:  Jan. 11, 2 p.m. - 7 p.m.,

Aviston Elementary School, 350 S. Hull St., Aviston.

  Marion County:

Jan. 6, 2 p.m. - 6 p.m., Iuka Grade School, 405 S. Main, Iuka.

Jan. 8, 3 p.m. - 6 p.m., Kinmundy Community Center, 104 W. 3rd St., Kinmundy.

Jan. 11, 1 p.m. - 5 p.m., Bryan Manor, 2150 E. McCord, Centralia.

Jan. 13, 1 p.m. - 5 p.m., Jordan Elementary, 311 Airport Road, Centralia.

Jan. 15, 2 p.m. - 6 p.m., Central City Elementary School, 129 Douglas St., Central City.

 Washington County:  Jan. 5, 12 p.m. - 6 p.m.,

Washington C ounty Hospital-Nashville, 705 South Grand, Nashville.

To donate blood simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driverโ€™s license or two other forms of identi-fication are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in gener-ally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

WOW!DONโ€™T MISS OUT!

Saturday

6 Exciting Days!

The last debates of the year, both Republican and Democrat, were held last week. In my opinion, neither one was anything to write home about. On Tuesday, Dec. 15, CNN hosted the Republican debate, and on Saturday, December 19 โ€” in the midst of a John Lennon 75th birthday concert, foot-ball games, last minute Christmas shopping, wrap-ping presents, parties and baking cookies โ€” ABC News hosted the Democratic debate.

On Tuesday, December 15, the Republican debate stage consisted of Rand Paul, Chris Christie, Jeb Bush?, Ted Cruz, Donald Trump, Marco Rubio, Carly Fiorina and John Kasich.

The ground rules were presented and they were o๏ฟฝ . (Sounds like a horse race.) CNN teaming up with Face-book, the questions started.

๏ฟฝ e ๏ฟฝ rst question went to Donald Trump and he an-swered with his usual enthu-siasm!

The main point driven home during the debate was that anyone on the stage that night would make a better Commander in Chief than Obama or Hillary Clinton. And to that I agree!

However, backing up, I don't know what keeps some of them in this race, espe-cially Jeb Bush and Rand Paul.

What I found interesting was the love fest between Trump and Ted Cruz.Reading between the lines, there could be more to this than meets the eye. Does Cruz have his eye on the position of running mate? Time will tell.

The main thing I took away from the CNN debate was I personally don't think Americans will vote for

Trump as much as they will vote against the Obama ad-ministration policies and Hillary Clinton โ€” one and the same!

So with all the above said, in my opinion, a๏ฟฝ er watch-ing the debate in its entirety, I would have to say Donald Trump was the clear winner, with Cruz and Christie falling just behind. Then came Carson, Carly and Rubio, with John Kasich, Jeb Bush and Rand Paul falling behind the second tier!

A point Trump drove home was that he would stick with the Republican Party no matter what. Hmmm!!! I've got to say I think that's questionable.

On to the Saturday evening Democratic debate hosted by ABC News. On stage were Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton and Martin O'Malley. A๏ฟฝ er the opening statements the evening started with an apology from Bernie Sanders to the queen of dishonesty, Hillary Clinton, over a data breach of the DNC database involv-ing the Clinton camp. As a matter of fact, according to Sanders, there were two data breaches. This particular incident is the motivation for a lawsuit ๏ฟฝ led by the Sanders camp.

I can't say I blame him. ๏ฟฝ e DNC, especially Debbie Wasserman Schultz, is doing everything possible to get Hillary elected by undoing Sanders, who is by far better than Clinton. And it was ap-parent that Bernie Sanders wasn't happy with the DNC. But it was also apparent Hillary โ€” with her arrogant attitude โ€” wasn't buying Bernie's apology. But, it did leave her nowhere to go on this one! Yeah, Bernie!

Dur ing the debate

Trump's name was men-tioned nine di๏ฟฝ erent times. I'm sure he loved it!

During the evening, Clinton dodged two ques-tions on Libya, lied about the ISIS recruitment video and tap danced the night away, along with O'Malley who felt he didn't get equal time.

Sanders accused the GOP as being far right, from the king of the far le๏ฟฝ . ๏ฟฝ at was rich! But the jewel of the evening was Hillary coming back late a๏ฟฝ er the ๏ฟฝ rst break! Gosh, what I could do with this one on Saturday Night Live!

Who was the most honest during the debate? I'd call it for Sanders. And the early polls re๏ฟฝ ected that Sanders came out on top!

And O'Malley was way down at less than 10% on every poll I saw.

On this particular debate let me leave you with this thought: Hillary Clinton said, "We are where we need to be in the fight against ISIS."

๏ฟฝ is is a prime example of my favorite saying, "You can't ๏ฟฝ x stupid." And this woman is beyond that.

In closing this week, let me say Merry Christmas to one and all, and may each of you have a blessed New Year.

Until next week!

Beware Holiday Foods, Ornaments, Plants

DEAR PAWโ€™S CORNER: Please remind your readers of how important it is to keep their pets away from holiday foods. Some foods, like chocolate, can be deadly poisonous to dogs, while rich foods and ingredients like onions or raisins can be dangerous for cats and dogs. โ€” Jessica L. in Camden, New Jersey

DEAR JESSICA: You told them, and thank you! ๏ฟฝ e holiday season, with plenty of parties, family and food, can be hectic for everyone, but itโ€™s important to monitor pets and make sure theyโ€™re kept away from potentially harmful items.

Many foods, not just chocolate but onions, grapes and raisins, nuts, avocados and other common holiday foods can cause house pets great harm. Store them well out of reach and keep pets out of the kitchen when cooking, and away from serving tables. A more ex-tensive list is available from the Humane Society of the United States.

Christmas tree orna-ments can potentially be harmful. Cats love knock-ing down glass ornaments and also may accidentally ingest tinsel or other shiny strands. Dogs may gnaw on interesting packages or break into gift boxes of candy or fruit.

Even plants need to be kept out of reach: poinset-tias, for example, are toxic to cats.

To minimize risk, place breakable ornaments higher in the tree and put plants well out of reach.

During parties or dinners, place your pets in a sepa-rate area of the house with bedding, food and water, and check on them occa-

sionally. (This also is helpful in keeping petsโ€™ stress levels down.).

State Sen. Kyle McCarter is seeking to end Illinoisโ€™ prohibition on the sale of ๏ฟฝ rearms made from metal alloys.

๏ฟฝ e 54th District Senator introduced Senate Bill 2209 December 15.

โ€œFirearms are expensive and unfortunately too ex-pensive for some citizens who wish to exercise their Second Amendment right and provide for their and their familyโ€™s protection,โ€ said McCarter (R-Lebanon). โ€œMy legislation repeals Illinoisโ€™ so-called โ€˜Melting-pointโ€™ law, which would allow licensed firearm dealers to begin o๏ฟฝ ering and selling more affordable weapons.โ€

Five states, including Illinois, ban the sale of handguns made with metal alloys, such as zinc because of a lower melting point compared to ๏ฟฝ rearms made with a homogeneous metal like steel. ๏ฟฝ e Illinois regu-lation applies to ๏ฟฝ rearms with a barrel, slide, frame or receiver that will melt or deform at a temperature of less than 800 degrees Fahrenheit, commonly re-ferred to as the melting-point law.

โ€œ๏ฟฝ e current prohibition of less-costly ๏ฟฝ rearms ef-fectively sets a high minimum price for hand-

guns,โ€ said McCarter. โ€œNot everyone can a๏ฟฝ ord those weapons. Limiting the avail-ability of cheaper ๏ฟฝ rearms discriminates against those citizens who cannot a๏ฟฝ ord the higher-priced premium weapons.

Sen. McCarter cites a research paper by former law professor and federal prosecutor T. Markus Funk to support his call for repeal.

"Gun Control And Economic Discrimination: ๏ฟฝ e Melting-Point Case-In-Point" dispels some popular misconceptions about melting-point laws. Funk looked at the primary argu-ments for such regulation, such as their lower-quality content calling into ques-tion their usefulness to sportsmen and increased di๏ฟฝ culty for law enforce-ment to investigate ๏ฟฝ rearm offenses, and reducing access to ๏ฟฝ rearms by crimi-nals.

Funk wrote, ๏ฟฝ e sports-men argument, โ€˜errone-ously assumes that the only legitimate use of handguns will be for sport. Many citi-zens buy handguns for self-defenseโ€ฆa signi๏ฟฝ cant per-centage of the public agrees that "personal protection" is a legitimate reason for owning a gunโ€ฆโ€™

Regarding police investi-gations of gun crimes, Funk

found, โ€˜According to bal-listics experts, cheaper guns, such as those which do not meet the melting-point law requirements, are no harder to trace ballistically than their more expensive coun-terparts.โ€™

On the issue of increasing criminal access to ๏ฟฝ rearms, Professor Funk cites a three-year, federally-funded study by Professors James Wright and Peter Rossi from the University of Massachusetts that found: โ€˜๏ฟฝ ere appear to be no strong causal connec-tions between private gun ownership and the crime rate.... ๏ฟฝ ere is no compel-ling evidence that private weaponry is an important cause of ... violent criminal-ity. It is commonly hypoth-

esized that much criminal violence, especially homi-cide, occurs simply because the means of lethal violence (firearms) are readily at hand, and thus, that much homicide would not occur were ๏ฟฝ rearms generally less available. ๏ฟฝ ere is no per-suasive evidence that sup-ports this view.โ€™

Sen. McCarter said while its true ๏ฟฝ rearms that fail to meet Illinoisโ€™ current melt-ing-point law are made of lesser-quality materials, they are also less expensive and more affordable for those who cannot purchase more expensive handguns.

Sen. McCarter said 45 states and the federal gov-ernment have no melting-point regulation.

Project Pride is a seasonal neighbor-hood recognition program sponsored by Keep Centralia Beautiful. ๏ฟฝ e recognition is presented to homes and businesses that have made a notable contribution to their neighborhood through beauti๏ฟฝ cation and upkeep of their property.

๏ฟฝ e City of Centralia has been divided into eight sections. One home in each section, along with one local business, will be presented with this honor during the months of May through December. ๏ฟฝ is award is to those contributing to the beau-ti๏ฟฝ cation of their neighborhood.

๏ฟฝ is yearโ€™s committee will make their tours around the city to choose the homes and one business each month. ๏ฟฝ e homes chosen will be provided a sign for their yard for that month, a certi๏ฟฝ cate and recognition in the Shoppers Weekly.

๏ฟฝ ank you in advance for making a

dedicated commitment to this program and your neighborhood. More people are taking pride in their yards and neighbor-hoods by putting time and e๏ฟฝ ort into making their property a true asset to the community. A๏ฟฝ er their hard work, they can enjoy the fruits of their toil and perhaps be recognized for helping make Centralia beautiful one neighborhood at a time. Centralia Clean and Green re-cently chose the properties pictured below as winners in the Project Pride program.

Please feel free to call MiMi at 618-322-4483 with the names and addresses of individuals you feel deserve this award. Thanks for helping Keep Centralia Beautiful.

๏ฟฝ e Christmas Story

๏ฟฝ e Christmas story of the birth of Jesus Christ has in-spired a countless number of songs, literature, music, and sel๏ฟฝ ess and noble deeds. Mil-lions of lives have been trans-formed by the babe born in a stable. ๏ฟฝ e Christmas story is His story, the birth of Christ, Immanuel, โ€œGod with us.โ€ Ancient prophecies foretold, with pin-point accuracy, the virgin birth, the exact village and the surrounding events as well as the descriptive names of Christ. (Isaiah 7:14; 9:6-7; Micah 5:2)

๏ฟฝ e gospels give us the mi-raculous details of the Christ-mas Story. Each Christmas Eve, my wife and I have read the biblical narrative of the Christmas story. The great Christmas carol, โ€œJoy to the Worldโ€ by Isaac Watts and George F Handel, calls us to rejoice in the incarnation of Christ. ๏ฟฝ e third verse focuses our attention on the reason for His coming. โ€œNo more let sins and sorrows grow; nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make, His blessings ๏ฟฝ ow; Far as the curse is found; Far as the curse is found; Far

as, far as the curse is found.โ€ A Christmas wreath is a perfect symbol for the season. It is a symbol of eternal life. But the crown of thorns is the reason for the season; for Christ came to die for the sins of the world and bear the curse of sin for all who will believe. (John 3:16)

The classic movie, โ€œA Charlie Brown Christmasโ€ portrays the Christmas story in a simple and moving way as they act out the gospel nar-rative. ๏ฟฝ is Christmas season read the scripture narrative and, as Mary did, ponder some of these glorious events of the Christmas story.

THE SOVEREIGN LORD CONDUCTED AND OR-C H E S T R AT E D T H E EVENTS OF CHRISTMAS. ๏ฟฝ e providence of God di-rected Joseph to take Mary to be registered by the decree of Caesar Augustus. โ€œAnd she brought forth her ๏ฟฝ rst born Son and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.โ€ (Luke 2:1-) If God can orchestrate all of the events of Christmas, canโ€™t you trust Him to direct your life?

๏ฟฝ e Lord of heaven was born in a stable. To have a stable life and a stable family, bow before the one born in a stable. Donโ€™t be like the inn-keeper who had no room for Christ.

THE SHEPHERDS WERE THE FIRST TO HEAR THE GOOD NEWS OF CHRISTโ€™S BIRTH. โ€œ๏ฟฝ en the angel said to them, โ€˜Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy.โ€ (Luke 2:8-10) ๏ฟฝ e angels ๏ฟฝ rst ap-peared to lowly, ordinary shepherds. Christ came to preach the gospel to the poor, needy, and ordinary men like most of us. ๏ฟฝ is boggles my mind and thrills my soul.

THE SAVIOR IS BORN. โ€œ๏ฟฝ e angels announced, โ€˜For there is born to you this day, in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.โ€™โ€ (Luke 2:11) Jesus was born to be the Savior. ๏ฟฝ e angel announced to Joseph, โ€œAnd you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their

sins.โ€ (Matthew 1:20-21) Without the crown of thorns that He wore there would be no Christmas wreath of eternal life. We need a Savior!

T H E " S U D D E N LY " SOUND FROM HEAVEN SURROUNDING THE SHEPHERDS. โ€œAnd sud-denly there was with the angels a multitude of heav-enly host praising God and saying โ€˜Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.โ€™โ€ (Luke 2:13-14) Many times God displays His glory when sud-denly heaven comes down. When these moments come to your life, like the shep-herds, seek Christ and worship and proclaim His glory to all you meet. (Luke 2:15-20) For the Christmas story is His story.

Holiday traditions vary from family to family, but one compo-nent of the holidays that seems to be universally enjoyed is a good Christmas song. Music is piped throughout malls and stores to entertain shoppers, and favorite tunes may be on the radio or streamed through a digital music service as families decorate their homes.

Many people may love Christmas songs and carols, but not everyone shares the same favorites. Thankfully, thereโ€™s no shortage of material when it comes to Christmas songs, ensuring thereโ€™s something for everyone.

In 2014, Time magazine re-searched records at the U.S. Copyright O๏ฟฝ ce to determine the most popular and most recorded Christmas songs since 1978. when copyright registrations were digitized. The following are some

of the more beloved holiday tunes and a bit of history about each song.

โ€ข โ€œSilent Nightโ€: One of the most rerecorded songs in history (733 versions since 1978), โ€œSilent Night,โ€ was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber and put to lyrics by Joseph Mohr. It was ๏ฟฝ rst performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a village in Austria. Todayโ€™s version is a slow lullaby, but itโ€™s believed the original was a dance-like tune in 6/8 time.

โ€ข โ€œO Holy Nightโ€: This popular song was composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847 to a French poem titled, โ€œMinuit, chrรฉtiens (Midnight, Christians).โ€ Many notable performers, including Perry Como, Cรฉline Dion, Josh Groban, Michael Crawford, and Lea Michele, have performed โ€œO Holy Night.โ€

โ€ข โ€œSilver Bellsโ€: Now a Christmas classic, โ€œSilver Bellsโ€

originally was written for the Bob Hope ๏ฟฝ lm, โ€œThe Lemon Drop Kid.โ€ Songwriter Jay Livingston wanted to title the song โ€œTinkle Bell,โ€ but his wife dissuaded him from using the word โ€œtinkle.โ€

โ€ข โ€œWhite Christmasโ€: Irving Berlin believed his song โ€œWhite Christmasโ€ would be an instant hit. His prediction was correct, especially after singer Bing Crosby recorded it.

โ€ข โ€œJingle Bellsโ€: Although it has become one of the more popular Christmas songs, โ€œJingle Bellsโ€ really was written for Thanksgiving. Itโ€™s also one of the oldest holiday songs of American origin. James Lord Pierpont, the songโ€™s author, was inspired by the famous sleigh races of Medford, Massachusetts.

โ€ข โ€œDo You Hear What I Hearโ€: Noel Regney wrote this song as a call to peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The original context has long been forgotten,

and โ€œDo You Hear What I Hearโ€ is now a staple of holiday celebra-tions.

โ€ข โ€œSanta Claus is Coming to Townโ€: James Gillespie wrote this tune while riding a subway and reminiscing about his childhood with his brother. It became a hit after being performed at the famed Macyโ€™s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

โ€ข โ€œThe Christmas Songโ€: This classic Christmas song was written in 1944 by Bob Wells and Mel Tormรฉ. Itโ€™s usually subtitled โ€œChestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.โ€ The song was written during a heat wave as a way to think cool thoughts. It only took 40 minutes to write the music and some of the lyrics. Nat King Coleโ€™s rendi-tion of the song is among the more popular versions.

Christmas songs are enjoyed and performed year after year. Popular songs continue to endure and attract new fans.

Christmas traditions focus on several di๏ฟฝ erent aspects of family and spiritual life. While many stories are shared around Christmastime, perhaps none bears more signi๏ฟฝ cance than the origin of the Christmas celebra-tion. Sharing the Christmas story is an integral part of holiday gath-erings, reminding families that faith is foremost during this festive time of year.

The Conception of JesusMary was a woman living in the

Galilee area of Nazareth. She was engaged to a Jewish carpenter named Joseph. An angel visited the Virgin Mary and told her that she would conceive a child โ€” a son โ€” by the power of the Holy Spirit. When the son was born, she would name him Jesus. Mary questioned the angel, who reas-sured her that anything was pos-sible by God and that Jesus would be Godโ€™s own son.

Joseph was troubled when he found out Mary was with child and even considered breaking their engagement, which was allowed under Jewish law. But God soon sent another angel, this time to Joseph, in a dream. The angel reassured Joseph that his marriage to Mary and the birth of this child were His will. Joseph awoke from his dream and took Mary as his wife soon after, ready and willing to raise the child despite the public humiliation he may experience.

The CensusDuring this time the Romans

had control over many parts of the world, including where Joseph and Mary resided. Ruler Caesar Augustus decreed that every person living under Roman rule had to return to his town of origin to participate in a census so ev-eryone could be taxed accord-ingly. Joseph, hailing from Bethlehem, had to return to this town with his very pregnant bride.

They traveled for many days and, upon arriving in Bethlehem, found that the inns were full and there was no available lodging. Mary and Joseph took shelter in a stable and prepared to welcome their son.

Jesusโ€™ Arrival According to the Gospel of

Luke, Mary gave birth to her ๏ฟฝ rst-born, a son, while in the stable. She wrapped him in cloth and placed him in a manger because there was no guest room available for them.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their ๏ฟฝ ocks at night. An angel of the Lord ap-peared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terri๏ฟฝ ed. But the angel said to them, โ€œDo not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he

is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will ๏ฟฝ nd a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.โ€

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

โ€œGlory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.โ€

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shep-herds said to one another, โ€œLetโ€™s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.โ€

So they hurried o๏ฟฝ and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

โ€” Luke Chapter 2

Many people visited the baby Jesus, including three wise men from the East who traveled by following a guiding star to bestow gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh on the baby king.

When Joseph and Mary had performed all the things neces-sary according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Nazareth with Jesus, who was growing strong in spirit and filled with wisdom and the grace of God.

The holiday season has arrived, and millions of people across the globe will be celebrating Christmas with their families and friends. The following are some interesting tidbits to share with your loved ones this holiday season.

โ€ข Each year, more than three billion Christmas cards are sent in the United States alone.

โ€ข In 350 AD, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25 the off ic ial celebration date for the birth of Jesus Christ. Many historians and theologians have surmised that Christ really wasn't born this time of year, thanks to imagery and information from the Bible.

โ€ข Christmas carols began as an English custom called "wassailing." Individuals toasted neighbors to a long and healthy life.

โ€ข The song "Jingle Bells" was originally written for Thanksgiving and not Christmas. People loved it so much that the lyrics were changed to ๏ฟฝ t Christmas.

โ€ข Despite the common tale that three wise men paid homage to baby Jesus, the Bible never specifically calls out a number. Similarly, there's no specific indication that they visited the infant Jesus. Their visit may have occurred when Jesus was older.

โ€ข Santa Claus' modern look was inspired by writings from The Knickerbockers of New York and imagery from Clement Clarke Moore's "A Visit from St. Nicholas." Moore denied authoring the famous poem for 15 years after it was published anonymously, feeling the poem was beneath his talents.

โ€ข Santa has his own official postal code. It's H0 H0 H0.

โ€ข Christmas trees typically grow for 15 years before they're cut and sold. This means the tre

โ€ข Christmas was not declared an o๏ฟฝ cial holiday in the United States until June 26, 1870.

โ€ข Before turkey, the traditional Christmas meal served in England was a pig's head and mustard.

โ€ข Male reindeer tend to shed their antlers in the winter. This means Santa's reindeer are likely female.

โ€ข Christ may have been born in a cave rather than a manger. According to the gospel of Luke, the shepherds that helped ๏ฟฝ nd shelter for Mary to give birth kept their ๏ฟฝ ock in a cave. The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is built over a cave called the Grotto of the Nativity, where Jesus is believed to have been born.

โ€ข Many people may be less inclined to stand under mistletoe waiting for a kiss if they knew what "mistletoe" means in the ancient Germanic language. It literally means "dung on a twig," for the bird who eats the berries and then leaves seeds in droppings to propagate new plants.

โ€ข Each holiday season, PNC Wealth Management calculates the costs of the gifts in the song, "The 12 Days of Christmas." The price index for the gifts went from $12,673 in 1984 to more than $24,000 in 2011. The most expensive gift is the swimming swans.

The holiday season has arrived, โ€ข Despite the common tale that โ€ข Male reindeer tend to shed

1ยผ tsp. kosher salt, divided 1/2 tsp. smoked paprika

3/4 tsp. black pepper 3 oz. bacon (about 4 slices)

1/3 cup grated 2% sharp cheddar cheese 3 T. freshly chopped cilantro

2 medium avocados, peeled, pitted, and diced

Place rack in upper and lower thirds of oven and preheat oven to 425ยฐF. Line two rimmed baking sheets with foil, then

brush with 1/2 T. olive oil each. Slice potatoes into 1/2" to 1/4" cross-sections (use a mandolin if you have one.) Arrange slices

in single layer on oiled baking sheets, then brush tops with remaining olive oil. Sprinkle with 1 tsp. salt and black pepper.

Roast 20-25 min., until golden brown underneath, rotating pans 180ยฐ and changing their positions on upper/lower racks

halfway through. Flip, then roast an additional 8 min. Remove from oven, sprinkle with cheddar, then return to oven and

bake an additional 3 min., until cheese is melted and bubbly. Meanwhile, in small bowl, combine avocado, Greek yogurt,

lime juice, remaining 1/4 tsp. salt and smoked paprika. Mash lightly with fork, but still leave mixture slightly chunky. Set

aside. Fry bacon in large skillet over medium heat, then remove from pan and set between two paper towels set atop a dinner

plate. Blot away excess grease and, when cool enough to handle, chop into small pieces. Once the crisps have baked, top each

with a dollop of avocado mixture, chopped bacon and cilantro. Serve warm or at room temperature. Yields about 40 bites.

The Christmas Truce Of 1914 BY SCOTT PINKOWSKI

It is the evening of December 24, 1914 and you're literally up to your knees in muck. You are a British soldier in the support trenches of the Western Front during World War One. As a stretcher bearer you've seen the worst of war, but you're eager for a lull in the action and optimistic that the new year will surely bring peace. Despite the miserable and cold conditions, morale is high. The men just received care pack-ages from home and even some gift packages "care of the state," complete with goodies and a note from George V, "May God protect you and bring you safe home."

After ๏ฟฝ nishing your Christmas Eve dinner of canned meat and a rock-hard biscuit, you've sought out solitude so you can think about your loved ones back home. In the dim light of the eve-ning's gloaming you hunch over your co๏ฟฝ ee as if you could receive warmth from the tiny wisp of steam rising from the tin โ€” a stark contrast to your memories of the warmer Christmases of your youth. In a futile attempt to keep warm, your legs involuntarily march in place โ€” an odd dance seemingly performed by each and every man up and down the trenches.

Faintly at ๏ฟฝ rst, you hear the fa-miliar baritone strains of "Silent Night" on the wind and know that some of the men must be making merry as best they can under the

circumstances. "Alles schlรคft; einsam wacht..." Then with dawning comprehension you realize that you're hearing the Germans singing in their trench-es, some 80 yards across No-Man's-Land. Not just your curios-ity has been piqued, as a few of your cohorts emerge from their dugouts to see what's going on. You risk a journey to the front line trench, sloshing through the connecting communications trench and greet the other three bearers of your company who are already standing on the ๏ฟฝ re-step craning their necks to peer over the parapet. Your col-leagues point out the miniature, glowing Christmas Trees com-pletely lit up with candles mounted on the top of the German trenches. There are dozens of them, spaced several yards apart. The German carol-ing grows louder and now there is shouting coming from the enemy trenches that you can't make out, followed by a spon-taneous sing-along as the Tommies all up and down your lines have joined in the singing, creating a bizarre cacophony as the English voices collide with the German lyrics drifting across No-Man's Land. The man next to you sco๏ฟฝ s and shouts "We'd rather die than sing German!" The answer comes back across No-Man's-Land in English, but with a thick accent, "It vould kill

us if you did!" Everyone laughs.Too dumbfounded to join in

the singing yourself, you watch as the unthinkable unfolds. Three shadowy ๏ฟฝ gures are clam-bering over the top of the enemy trenches and start moving toward your lines through the pockmarked lunarscape of No-Man's-Land. As the three enemy silhouettes, back lit against their candlelit tannenbaums move closer, you discern that they are unarmed but not empty handed. British soldiers start slogging over the tops of their own trenches as well. Gathering every bit of courage you might not have had on any other night, you too head over the top to shake hands with, joke around with, and exchange gifts with the men who have been trying to kill you for weeks.

โ€”โ€” โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”The Christmas Truce of 1914

between the British and German forces is a very well-document-ed and often romanticized phe-nomenon that occurred during the ๏ฟฝ rst Christmas of World War I all along the Western Front. Starting on Christmas Eve of 1914, it's estimated that some 100,000 British and German sol-diers put down their ri๏ฟฝ es and peacefully met in No-Man's-Land, often exchanging gifts and food.

WOULD LIKE TO WISH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY

A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

the Christmas Truce, the German o๏ฟฝ ensive was halted by British and French troops at the outskirts of Paris in the famous Battle of the Marne and the Germans were sub-sequently pushed back northeast, causing them to dig in and build very well-constructed fortifica-tions. As each side tried to out๏ฟฝ ank the other and exploit the less de๏ฟฝ ned front lines to the north, the "Race to the Sea" began. With neither side able to break through, the result was a long line of oppos-ing trenches all the way from the North Sea to the Swiss border. The stage was set for four years of bitter trench warfare.

The ๏ฟฝ rst Christmas Truce began on Christmas Eve near Ypres, Belgium, much like the imagined account above, with the Germans decorating their trenches and car-oling. Eventually, the singing and yelling of greetings escalated to the point that tensions were low enough for the enemies to meet in No-Man's-Land to shake hands and exchange gifts. This phenom-enon occurred all up and down the lines independently and spontane-ously. In some areas there was nothing more than a brief cease๏ฟฝ re to retrieve their fallen comrades, in other areas the uno๏ฟฝ cial truce went on until New Years Day.

A famous account has the Germans bringing a chocolate cake to the British lines and the British presenting a gift of tobacco.  Ac-counts in another area tell of two barrels of French beer from a nearby occupied brewery being presented to the British along with the German o๏ฟฝ cer's assurance that it would not make the British men drunk. The next morning, the Germans yelled over from their trenches, asking how they liked the beer, to which the British replied that it was weak, but they were grateful, nonetheless. Many accounts tell of the exchange of gifts, usually buttons, hats, tobacco, alcohol, chocolate and other things they had on hand. With all the Christmas care packages that both sides received from home or from the state, they had more goodies on hand than usual. One of the most famous stories is about an impromptu game of soccer between Tommy and Fritz played out in a desolate stretch of No-

Man's-Land.The upper echelons of

command on both sides had a very poor view of the proceed-ings. Accounts tell of how of-๏ฟฝ cers on both sides tried in vain to stop the men from leaving the trenches, but eventually had to accept the situation. Others tell of how the stu๏ฟฝ y British officers caved in and joined the festivities them-selves when they saw the German officers out in the open.

The Christmas Truce of 1914 is not the only instance in which informal ceasefires were ar-ranged. In some places, the opposing trenches were no more than 30 yards apart, well within the range for the soldiers to yell greetings (or insults) at each other and there were cases when special arrange-ments had been struck up between the sides to retrieve fallen comrades and conduct burials. There have even been cases of opposing nighttime patrols meeting in the dark and exchanging a few words or a cigarette before continuing on their respective ways. However, there has never been anything as large and widespread as the uno๏ฟฝ cial truces of the Christ-mas of 1914 before or since.

Many factors have been at-tributed to the possibility of the Christmas Truce. Both sides were very optimistic about their chances for victory when the Spring o๏ฟฝ ensive started up again. Morale was high too because both sides had been receiving the aforementioned letters of thanks and care pack-ages from home and from the

state. They had no idea of the brutal quagmire that was in store for them in the coming years. The most horrible, gruel-ing and inhumane tortures like poison gas were yet to be seen.  It's been speculated that these factors contributed to why no more large scale Christmas Truces occurred throughout the rest of the war, despite some attempts. (Not to mention strict prohibitions from the high command on both sides against future fraternizations.)  No doubt the biggest factor was that as the horrors of war mounted with each passing year, each side saw their op-ponents as less and less human.

Still, the reason that the Christmas Truce of 1914 cap-tures the hearts and imagina-tion of so many is that it illus-trates that we are still human. These stories show how men were overwhelmed with the spirit of goodwill and brother-hood enough to risk their lives, walking into a brutal killing field to shake hands with someone just like them whose only di๏ฟฝ erence is being born in a di๏ฟฝ erent country. It shows us that we can separate ourselves from the politics and ideologies that seem to drive so much of mankind today. It shows us the sheer power of the Christmas Spirit and how it can make us better people, (even if most of us may not abide by it 365 days a year!) Most of all, it shows us that even in the midst of a hor-rible hellscape there just may be hope for mankind after all if we're willing to clamber out of our trenches.

Two little children were sitting by the ๏ฟฝ re one cold winter's night. All at once they heard a timid knock at the door, and one ran to open it.

There, outside in the cold and the darkness, stood a child with no shoes upon his feet and clad in thin, ragged garments. He was shivering with cold, and he asked to come in and warm himself.

"Yes, come," cried both the children; "you shall have our place by the ๏ฟฝ re. Come in!"

They drew the little stranger to their warm seat and shared their supper with him, and gave him their bed, while they slept on a hard bench.

In the night they were awakened by strains of sweet music and, looking out, they saw a band of children in shining garments approaching

the house. They were playing on golden harps, and the air was full of melody. Suddenly the Stranger Child stood before them; no longer cold and ragged, but clad in silvery light.

His soft voice said: "I was cold and you took Me in. I was hungry, and you fed Me. I was tired, and you gave Me your bed. I am the Christ Child, wandering through the world to bring peace and happiness to all good children. As you have given to Me, so may this tree every year give rich fruit to you."

So saying, He broke a branch from the ๏ฟฝ r tree that grew near the door, and He planted it in the ground and disappeared. But the branch grew into a great tree, and every year it bore wonderful golden fruit for the kind children.

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays

Mantles adorned with garland and other holiday trinkets make ๏ฟฝ replaces come alive for Christmas. That magic is only en-hanced by hanging Christmas stockings, which are just waiting to be fi l led with goodies for good girls and boys. Those without a fireplace often hang stockings from windowsills and stair-way banisters.

No written record exists to explain the origin of hanging stockings on ๏ฟฝ replace mantles. Despite this, many people link the tradition to a tale about St. Nicholas. As that story goes, St. Nicholas was traveling through a village when he overheard the plight of three women. They were poor, and their father could not a๏ฟฝ ord an ample dowry to marry them o๏ฟฝ . Rather than have them end up spinsters, St. Nicholas secretly tossed bags of coins through a window (or down the chimney, depending on which version of the story you read

or hear), and they were captured in the girlsโ€™ stockings hanging to dry by the ๏ฟฝ re. The family was overjoyed to have re-ceived such riches.

Soon news traveled about the mysterious money in stockings, and other children left out stockings for St. Nicholas to capture their own gifts.

The tradition has trans-formed over the years, and now many children hang stockings by the chimney with the expecta-tion that the stockings will be ๏ฟฝ lled with gifts from Santa. Traditions once suggested that only gifts from Santa were left in stockings, while gifts placed beneath the tree were from family, but that has since changed. Stockings are now meant to hold small gifts while larger items are placed under the tree.

Stockings should be hung away from the ๏ฟฝ ames of the ๏ฟฝ re as a safety precaution. Some children even like to hang individual stockings on their bedposts instead of on a ๏ฟฝ replace mantle.

Leaving cookies and milk for Santa Claus is a Christmas Eve tradition. Children regularly place a dish of cookies and a glass of milk by the tree on Christmas Eve so that Santa has enough energy to complete all of his gift-giving before kids wake up on Christmas morning. The tradition of leaving cookies out on Christmas

Eve may trace its origins to Saint Nicholas. On the feast of St. Nicholas on December 6, children would leave food and drink for the saint and any attendants. The treats would be exchanged for gifts. While thatโ€™s one theory behind the tradi-tion, others think it is linked to the history of the Christmas tree and the

edible decorations that adorn it. Santa would snack on the ornaments. Even after edible decora-tions gave way to inedible ornaments, the tradition of leaving a snack for Santa remained. Whatever the origins behind the tradition, millions of chil-dren dutifully leave milk and cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve.

COOKIES AND MILK FOR SANTA!

Cookies:3/4 cup unsalted butter, slightly softened to room temperature3/4 cup granulated sugar1 large egg2 teaspoons vanilla extract1/4 teaspoon almond extract (makes the ๏ฟฝ avor outstanding)2 and 1/4 cups all-purpose ๏ฟฝ our (measured correctly)1/2 teaspoon baking powder1/4 teaspoon salt

Santa Claus loves all kinds of cookies from all over the world, but one of his favorites is Sugar Cookies With Icing โ€“ a Christmas Classic!

Directions:Make sure you have allotted enough

time (and enough counter space!) to make these cookies. The cookie dough needs to chill, the cookies need to cool com-pletely, and the icing needs 24 hours to completely harden. If enjoying right away and hardened icing isn't a concern, you'll only need about 4 hours to make these.

In a large bowl using a handheld or stand mixer ๏ฟฝ tted with the paddle attach-ment, beat the butter until creamed and smooth - about 1 minute. Add the sugar and beat on high speed until light and ๏ฟฝ u๏ฟฝ y, about 3 or 4 minutes. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed. Add the egg, vanilla, and almond extract and beat on high until fully combine, about 2 minutes. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed.

Whisk the ๏ฟฝ our, baking powder, and salt together in a medium bowl. Turn the mixer down to low and add about half of the ๏ฟฝ our mixture, beating until just barely combined. Add the rest of the ๏ฟฝ our and continue mixing until just combined. If

the dough still seems too soft, you can add 1 Tablespoon more ๏ฟฝ our until it is a better consistency for rolling.

Divide the dough into 2 equal parts. Roll each portion out onto a piece of parchment to about 1/4" thickness. Stack the pieces (with paper) onto a baking sheet and refrigerate for at least 1 hour and up to 1 day. Chilling is mandatory.

Once chilled, preheat oven to 350F degrees. Line 2-3 large baking sheets with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. The amount of batches will depend on how large/small you cut your cookies. Remove one of the dough pieces from the refrigerator and using a cookie cutter, cut in shapes. Transfer the cut cookie dough to the prepared baking sheet. Re-roll the remaining dough and con-tinue cutting until all is used.

Bake for 8-11 minutes, until very lightly colored on top and around the edges. Make sure you rotate the baking sheet halfway through bake time. My cookies took 9 minutes. Allow to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before icing. No

need to cover the cookies as the cookies cool.

For the icing, whisk the confectioners' sugar, vanilla, corn syrup, and 2 table-spoons of water in a medium bowl. It should be quite thick. If it is much too thick, add 1/2 Tablespoon more water. If it is much too thin, add 2 more Tablespoons of confectioners' sugar. If you drizzle a little of the icing with the whisk, the ribbon of icing will hold for a few seconds before melting back into the icing. That is when you know it's the right consis-tency and is ready to use. If desired, add liquid or gel food coloring. You can pour some icing into di๏ฟฝ erent bowls if using multiple colors. If not decorating right away, cover the icing tightly and keep in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Decorate the cooled cookies however you'd like. Squeeze bottles make decorat-ing so easy. You may enjoy right away or you can wait 24 hours for the icing to set and harden-- no need to cover the cookies as the icing sets. Once the icing has set, these cookies are great for gifting or for sending.

Icing:1 and 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract1 teaspoon light corn syrup2 - 2.5 Tablespoons room temperature waterpinch salt

Merry Christmas and A Very Happy, Prosperous New Year

From All Of Us to A ll Of You!

The Three Kings BY HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW

Three Kings came riding from far away,Melchior and Gaspar and Baltasar;Three Wise Men out of the East were they,And they travelled by night and they slept by day,For their guide was a beautiful, wonderful star.

The star was so beautiful, large and clear,That all the other stars of the skyBecame a white mist in the atmosphere,And by this they knew that the coming was nearOf the Prince foretold in the prophecy.

Three caskets they bore on their saddle-bows,Three caskets of gold with golden keys;Their robes were of crimson silk with rowsOf bells and pomegranates and furbelows,Their turbans like blossoming almond-trees.

And so the Three Kings rode into the West,Through the dusk of the night, over hill and dell,And sometimes they nodded with beard on breast,And sometimes talked, as they paused to rest,With the people they met at some wayside well.

"Of the child that is born," said Baltasar,"Good people, I pray you, tell us the news; For we in the East have seen his star,And have ridden fast, and have ridden far,To find and worship the King of the Jews."

And the people answered, "You ask in vain;We know of no King but Herod the Great!"They thought the Wise Men were men insane,As they spurred their horses across the plain,Like riders in haste, who cannot wait.

And when they came to Jerusalem,Herod the Great, who had heard this thing,Sent for the Wise Men and questioned them; And said, "Go down unto Bethlehem,And bring me tidings of this new king."So they rode away; and the star stood still,The only one in the grey of morn;Yes, it stopped โ€”it stood still of its own free will,Right over Bethlehem on the hill,The city of David, where Christ was born.

And the Three Kings rode through the gate and the guard,Through the silent street, till their horses turnedAnd neighed as they entered the great inn-yard;But the windows were closed, and the doors were barred,And only a light in the stable burned.

And cradled there in the scented hay,In the air made sweet by the breath of kine,The little child in the manger lay,The child, that would be king one dayOf a kingdom not human, but divine.

His mother Mary of NazarethSat watching beside his place of rest,Watching the even flow of his breath,For the joy of life and the terror of deathWere mingled together in her breast.

They laid their offerings at his feet:The gold was their tribute to a King,The frankincense, with its odor sweet,Was for the Priest, the Paraclete,The myrrh for the body's burying.

And the mother wondered and bowed her head,And sat as still as a statue of stone,Her heart was troubled yet comforted,Remembering what the Angel had saidOf an endless reign and of David's throne.

Then the Kings rode out of the city gate,With a clatter of hoofs in proud array; But they went not back to Herod the Great,For they knew his malice and feared his hate,And returned to their homes by another way.

โ€ข It was beloved American singer, song-writer and musician Ray Charles who made the following sage observa-tion: "Marriage is like college; as great as it is, it ain't for everybody."

โ€ข Those who study such things say that w hen a l l ama i s humming, that means it's content.

โ€ข If you think life in the Big Apple is tough these days, consider this: In the 1930s, land-lords evicted about 17,000 tenants every month.

โ€ข It's the little details that can make or break a plan. A pair of aspiring bank robbers in Daytona Beach, Florida, walked into a bank, pulled out guns, demanded that a

teller hand over the loot, and even made it out of the building. The problem came when they got in their getaway car; the engine sput-tered and died almost immediately. It seems someone had forgotten to ๏ฟฝ ll up the gas tank.

โ€ข The gray squirrel isn't always gray; these arboreal rodents also come in both black and white varieties.

โ€ข Sharks have been known to attack boats before, but they rarely, if ever, try for a second bite โ€” regardless of what Hollywood would have you believe. When a shark goes for a boat, it's a case of mistaken identity: electrical im-pulses from the metal of a ship's hull make the

shark think that the boat is another animal (that is to say: dinner).

โ€ข If you're fond of fancy cocktails, you probably won't be sur-prised to learn that the words "mai tai" are actu-ally Tahitian for "the very best.".
