Dear Parishioners,

Saint Jeanne Jugan & The Little Sisters of the Poor

Jeanne Jugan was canonized a saint on October 11, 2010.

Jeanne Jugan was born on October 25, 1792 in Cancale, France. On a winter evening in 1839, Jeanne Jugan carried home an elderly, poor, blind woman and laid her in her own bed. This woman, like many other elderly, widowed women– without family or social security to care for her – was homeless and living on the streets. Jeanne’s heart was moved by the sight of the elderly poor and could no longer pass them by. She soon carried others to her home.

Other ladies came to join Jeanne Jugan in her work of caring for the elderly poor. They took in more and more residents and had to move several times to larger facilities.

Many of the women Jeanne Jugan took in had lived by begging. So now she and the other ladies took their place and begged for the needs of the elderly poor.

On May 29, 1842, Jeanne Jugan and her group became a religious community, now known as the Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Poor. In addition to the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, the Little Sisters take a fourth vow of hospitality by which they are consecrated to receiving the elderly poor.

The work of the Little Sisters of the Poor has spread rapidly around the world to 32 countries with Sisters in over 100 homes. Locally, in Philadelphia, the Little Sisters of the Poor’s Holy Family Home is located at 5300 Chester Avenue in West Philadelphia.

High School Girls, College students, and young women who are discerning a religious vocation to answer Christ’s call to be of service are encouraged to visit Holy Family Home and the Little Sisters of the Poor and the elderly who live there. I promise you that your visit will touch your soul.

The elderly poor are not only those who are financially poor but also those who are in need of companionship, company, a listening ear, a compassionate and empathetic spirit with whom they can converse.

May the life of Saint Jeanne Jugan inspire us to embrace the elderly poor.

Welcome Fr. Leva

To welcome Fr. Leva, we will host a Coffee and Cake Social after the 10:30 AM Mass on Sunday, June 24 in the school cafeteria.

God bless you,

Dear People of Saint Joseph Parish,

On behalf of Legacy for Life Foundation, Inc., thank you for the second collection donation made to help all the women who have chosen life this year! Your gift of $3,650.45 is helping save babies and transform the lives of their mothers. The women are praying for you. Sincerely, Marie Joseph, Executive Director of Legacy of Life, Yardley, PA

In today’s second reading Saint Paul argues that a community’s journey of faith culminates in the thanksgiving expressed in the Eucharistic meal, when the bread is broken, the cup of salvation is lifted up and the covenant with Christ is affirmed. In fact, he maintains that the entire community’s “inner nature” is constantly being renewed in hope through this thanksgiving meal. Good stewards understand that the weekly celebration of the Eucharist is a communal gesture by which the gathered community reveals its faith and hope in the risen Lord. Moreover, that it is a profound communal act of faith that Christ is present and active in the world at this moment. Given that understanding, what responsibilities do we take on to lift up the faith of our community? What part do we play in giving it hope?
