Canadians should seek to be witnesses to Christ in
Canada and the world, and to continue working to
influence those in government to act from
Christian principles and attitudes. Christians,
realizing that they do not have a lasting home
here, should pray and work for justice and peace
in Canada and throughout the world so that all
God’s people may share in the goods of this earth. ~ Ordo; Candian Conference of Catholic Bishops, Ottawa

perseverance. It often
grows in stages. Sometimes
we fall. Sometimes we
walk away. So often, we
must crawl. Whether we
consciously admit to it or
not, our faith - our life in
Christ - has sustained us throughout the ups and
downs of our lives. It has sustained us in moments
of new life and in death, at times of sickness,
and at those times when we struggle to give
meaning to painful situations. ~ Meeting God in the Upper Room: Three Moments to Change Your Life

The Presence of Parents to their children
during vacation
The school calendar for the year ended in the month of June. I
congratulate all our children from St Robert, St David, Holy Family,
St John Paul II, as well those in the public schools for a successful
year. During the celebrations of the end of the year and gradua-
tion masses, I could see the joy radiating on their faces as they
look forward to a pleasant summer vacation.
As the teachers get off the hook of taking responsibility over these
children, the shift goes to the parents. Remember that our
children need the attention of the parents even as you do your
daily work. It is the responsibility of the parents to be present to
their children, to listen, to teach, to guide, to admonish, and to
correct the children, so that they may grow to embrace the values
that will make their life edifying. This is an opportunity to be close
to your children to get to know them more and more as they grow
up. The spare time of the parents should be used in a way that
accommodates the children not only your friends.
The needs of the children are not restricted to toys, games,
phones, and other products of technology; they need their parents
to instruct them about social, spiritual, moral, and even economic
values as members of the same family. I don't know if many
families teach their children about traditional catholic prayers that
are learnt from parents as first teachers of faith; may be few
parents or grand parents do help out. Children should know that
vacation from school, does not mean vacation from going to
church for worship. It is also pertinent to keep in mind that
parents are encouraged to appreciate and applaud the good things
the children do, rather than always blaming them for their wrong
doings. The more we emphasize their positive efforts the more
they will be inclined to improve and do better, turning away from
negative activities.
Don't leave the children unattended to, and later come back to
give them money to buy whatever they want in the mall. Parents,
kindly rearrange your schedule for the summer, to limit the
activities that you do outside your home with friends and
acquaintances; spend time with your children on holidays. May the
Lord grant every family his protection throughout the summer and
in the years to come. Amen.
Fr. Augustine
What a way to finish off the school year! I attended three elementary school graduations: St. David’s, St. Robert’s and Holy Family Catholic elementary schools. It was a
great privilege to be a part of the different school communities sending off their students to a new stage of their journey.
It was kind of cool to see how each school celebrated their students, in their own unique way. One thing I recall is how St. Roberts decorated the altar with art celebrating their youth’s faith journey. One piece that struck me, had different shades of blue tissue paper for its background and a black paper cross with writing in front of it saying “believe.” It was so striking and the effect was similar to stained glass. What a beautiful expression of faith from a young person.
During St. David’s graduation, an afghan, made by the crochet club, was presented to a member of the St. David community who made a positive difference in the school. This year it was awarded to a grade 8 student! I can still remember his face, when receiving the blanket from the community, wrapped around him like a warm hug.
Holy Family’s celebration had a youth band lead the music. It was really well done. There were drums, a base, the piano, and two vocalists who were really talented. And they were all students from that school community (with a teacher on piano). Let’s just say their music made me glorify God. Good job!
Despite these unique expressions to each school’s celebrations, they all had the slide show with baby pictures at the end of course! Some even had baby pictures of the teachers, which made the crowd chuckle. All the celebrations were really well done, and it was moving to see how the graduates recognized those who helped them on their journey as well. Good luck grads, you will be in our prayers!

Almighty and ever living God, who didst strengthen thine apostle
Thomas with sure and certain faith in thy Son's resurrection:
Grant us so perfectly and without doubt to believe in Jesus
Christ, our Lord and our God, that our faith may never be found
wanting in thy sight; through him who liveth and reigneth

When her father passed away, Maria’s mother and her siblings worked the fields while Maria kept house and watched
her youngest sister. On July 5, 1902, Maria’s brother Alessandro grabbed her. When he tried to rape her, she cried out
that it was a mortal sin and he would go to hell. At her screams, Alessandro choked her. Maria said she would rather
die than submit. Upon her words, he stabbed her eleven times. When she attempted to get away, he stabbed her 3
more times. Maria’s wounds were beyond the surgeon’s ability to help. The surgeon asked Maria to think of him in
paradise. The next day Maria forgave Alessandro and said she wanted him in heaven with her. She died looking at an image of the
Virgin Mary. Alessandro was imprisoned for 27 years where he dreamed he was in a garden with Maria who gave him lilies that
burned his hands. He repented and lived a reformed life. Maria was beatified by Pope Pius XII on April 27, 1947 at St. Peter’s Basilica.
Alessandro was in the crowd to celebrate her canonization. He later became a lay brother of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin.
Maria is called a martyr because she fought against Alessandro, however, it is her ability for forgiveness, and the miracle her
forgiveness produced in his life. ~ Catholic.org
