Message from Fr. Pergjini- Sunday August 6, 2017. It is the feast Transfigura on. A beau ful feast

in the middle of summer, the Transfigura on of our Lord in mount Tabor. In the Eastern Church this solemnity is rightly called "Easter in the middle of summer” What a beau ful and powerful descrip on” Easter in the middle of summer. Since the third century on top of mount Tabor a basilica was built in the memory of this unique event of the life of Christ on earth. It is believed and well accepted that the date August 6th is the date when the basilica on Mount Tabor was dedicated and has con nued since then to be celebrated in the East and the West. It is very important to know also, that on August 6th, 1456, in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, the Chris an army was able to stop the Turks from invading the rest of Europe. It was a great victory for Chris an Europe and it happened on the feast of Transfigura on. In commemora on of the defeat of O oman Empire, one year later Pope Calixtus III, proclaimed that August 6th, the feast of Transfigura on is universal and official date to celebrate the Transfigura on. The Scripture sources of this beau ful feast come from the accounts of the three Gospels, Saint Mathew 17: 1-8, Saint Mark 9: 2-9, and Saint Luke 9: 28-36. They all have the substan al agreement about the event. This liturgical year we are using cycle A, and Gospel readings are taken from Saint Mathew. Christ took Peter, James, and John climbing the high mountain where Christ was transfigured in the presence of Moses and Elijah. The Mountain is such a powerful image in the life of Christ and has a very important place. Pope Benedict XVI in his book “Jesus of Nazareth” volume 2, beau fully describes the deep and profound meaning of the mountains in the life of Christ. He cites the various mountains where Christ had a special and meaningful rela onship. The mountain of tempta ons where Christ defeated the devil; the mountain of great preaching where huge crowds came to hear the good news of salva on; the mountain of his prayer where Christ in solitude prayed to His Father; the mountain of Transfigura on where Christ an cipated the Glory of His Resurrec on: the mountain of his agony where Christ was swea ng blood; the mountain of his Cross where Christ died. And the final mountain is the mountain of the Risen Lord where he powerfully declares; "All power in heaven and on earth is given to me." (Mathew 28:18) On this solemnity of Transfigura on Christ an cipated to his disciples that a er passion and Cross is the Glory of Heaven. And in order to prepare and live the Glory of the Father they had to pay a en on to the voice that came from the cloud, the voice of Almighty Father: This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased: listen to him." Mathew 17:5. The disciples were afraid of that voice, afraid to accept suffering and martyrdom, unwilling to accept that the Glory of Risen Christ without the cross would have been impossible. And Christ comes to calm their fear and strengthen them for their future. Yes indeed, this solemnity offers a very powerful image: the face of Christ illuminated by Glory of Almighty Father and the very white color of His vestments an cipated the future Glory of resurrec on. And today as we celebrate this solemnity what is the message for you and myself? Just what happened back then? Or thinking of the victory defea ng Turks on August 6, 1456? If that is the case this feast has nothing to offer to us, just a past event and nothing more. But for us, people of faith and hope who do not simply contemplate the power of this event in the majes c scene of Transfigura on, but this passage of Transfigura on reminds to all of us who par cipate in these sacred mysteries, the voice of the Almighty Father that came from the cloud: Listen to Him he is my beloved son with whom I am well pleased," becomes alive and penetra ng in the holy scripture, and more powerfully on the Altar where Christ is really present body, blood, soul, and divinity. It is Christ who calms our fears, our sufferings, makes easier to carry out our cross, as He did back then to his disciples preparing for the sufferings and Glory. Only on this way, and no other way we can understand the joy of the Transfigura on and humbly listen to Christ accep ng our pains and suffering always having Christ with us and for us. It is Sunday, August 6, 2107, the solemnity of Transfigura on, the Easter in the middle of summer.
