    WEEKLY REFLECTION

2 Timothy 4:6-8 Paul the Apostle travelled throughout the east-ern Mediterranean world proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ. He relied on his followers to supervise the growth of the church in the various cities he visited. Paul placed his young protégé Timothy in charge of the congregation in Ephesus, a city in western Turkey which was one of the largest cities in the Roman Empire at the time. The New Testament preserves two of Paul’s letters to Timothy in which he encouraged him to remain steadfast in the faith and to persevere in the face of challenges. He also wrote a similar letter to his disciple Titus who was in charge of the Christian community on the island of Crete. Paul knew that he had a short time left in this world. “The time of my departure is at hand. I have com-peted well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me.” (2 Timothy 4:6-8) Paul encouraged Timothy, and he point-ed to himself as a model of fidelity to follow. Paul helped Timothy overcome his anxiety, lack of confidence, and frustration in dealing with a difficult congregation by providing encouragement and an example to follow. Everyone who exercises Christian leadership to-day should provide example and encouragement to the younger generation and to all those who are called upon to grow in faith and perseverance. All parents regardless of their religious or cultur-al backgrounds have the responsibility to see to it that their children develop three qualities which will lead to their personal happiness and to their growth as responsi-ble citizens. Those who belong to an older generation must help young people develop a moral compass, a sense of resilience, and a sense of purpose. Encouragement becomes more effective when it is reinforced by example. Let us pray for the grace of a positive attitude which leads us to act responsibly and make principled choices. Like Paul may we compete well, run the race, and keep the faith.
