We are beginning to see the signs that our Sunday offertory collections are growing through the generosity of many, many parishioners. Thank you so very much to all who have chosen to

participate in this important program. Your generosity shows your willingness as faithful stewards to be part of the ongoing mission of St. Michael Church.

The Sanctuary Candle beside the tabernacle burns this week (Oct. 29-Nov. 4) in memory of:

Parish School of Religion (PSR)

PSR Notes – Virtus & 6th/7th Grade Update PSR students received a form from their teachers this weekend with information about an upcoming Virtus lesson that will take the place of 1 PSR class later this fall. Please read this form carefully and return it next Sunday when you bring your student(s) to PSR. This week, we take a quick look at what our 6th and 7th grade students have been up to lately. During last week’s class, the students learned about Catholic social teachings that relate to the “render to Caesar what is Caesar’s” gospel reading. The students reflected on the brands that they support and how those choices are intertwined with their Catholic faith.

Sometimes a name conjures an image of the person. Some people go to great lengths to have a name that will seem affluent, dignified or perhaps sound like a celebrity. You may have heard that Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jean Mortenson. Let’s get up and dance to tunes from Peter Gene Bayot Hernandez. Who? Aka Bruno Mars! And if I meet someone named Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, Du Pont, Buffet or Thurston Howell the third, I will invite that person to lunch and request a donation to our parish! The name game. But don’t always judge the might of someone by their name. Two little names… Mary Hamm. Nothing small or meek about that lady! She was a dynamic person, full of determination and purpose. She was a devout Catholic, a kind and generous steward, stood up against wrong and fought for right. As I sat at Mrs. Hamm’s funeral last week, I pondered her life. All of us who are blessed to be mothers have the utmost respect, admiration and pure awe for any woman who has welcomed twelve babes into the world. Her heart must have soared when she saw her family grow with the addition of

spouses, grandchildren and great children. But Mrs. Hamm’s legacy is even greater than her HUGE family. She leaves a legacy of a faith-filled life, a love of community and a commitment to others. Alyssa Hamm discussed her grandmother; “She was the glue. And I’m confident that anyone would agree. Twelve children, twenty-six grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren speaks volumes.” Alyssa also told me that Mrs. Hamm went out of her way to solve an issue. “If someone came to her with a problem she would go above and beyond to solve it.” Mrs. Hamm lived for others. I hope that we can all be inspired by the life she lived. On November 8, Mrs. Hamm and all of our dear departed will be remembered at our Evening Prayer for the Dead. During this touching and beautiful service of scripture and song, we read aloud the names of all of the parishioners who have died since the prior November service. Family members are invited to come forward to light a candle when the name is read. Following the moving remembrance, everyone gathered will have an opportunity to come forward to light a candle in memory of a loved one who has passed on and are now with our heavenly Father. Please join us! -Wendy Hinerman, Business Manager

Shoe-vember In conjunction with our Christmas Show on Dec. 14th, St. Michael Parish School is collecting gently used and new shoes. We have partnered with

Funds2Orgs. This organization is a for-profit social enterprise. The core of its business model is shoe drive fundraisers. The other components are providing an economic opportunity for workers in developing nations and helping the environment. The shoes we collect serve as a philanthropic bridge to give people a hand-up and work opportunity. Micro-entrepreneurs set up small businesses. They sell the shoes we gather, which creates business and commerce opportunities leading to sustainability. Lastly, our school is given a monetary donation from the Funds2orgs, provide bags for the shoes and pick-up the shoes once the collection process is complete. If you have any shoes you would like to donate to this collection, please send them to Mrs. Nodurft’s office or to Miss Graytok’s music room. If you have any questions please contact Shandi Nodurft at [email protected] or 304.242.3966, ext 4.
