EL CAMINO DE LA SENCILLEZ Santa Teresa del Niño Jesús y de la Santa Faz, conocida también como la pequeña flor, nos enseñó una vida de discipulado que cualquiera puede imitar. Su ardiente amor por Dios ha influido a millares de personas. A la edad de 15 años entró en un convento francés y fue revelando su vida espiritual por medio de su biografía, sus cartas y poemas. Teresita, como la

llaman los hispano-parlantes, desarrolló lo que ella llamó “el camino de la sencillez”, o sea, servir a Dios con persistencia en los detalles de la vida cotidiana; una tarea que no es más fácil para una monja de clausura que para nosotros dentro de nuestras familias, comunidades y centros de trabajo. Al-gunas veces ella no podía rezar y sufría muchísimo por la tuberculosis que le provocó la muerte a la edad de 24 años. La Iglesia la declaró santa muy poco tiempo después de su muerte y más tarde doctora de la Iglesia, una de las tres mujeres que tienen ese título. Santa Teresita mantuvo una esperanza firme en el cielo y vio la vida eterna como una transición ininterrumpida desde nuestra peregrinación de fe aquí en la tierra. THE LITTLE WAY Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus—known as The Little Flower—showed us a life of discipleship that anyone can imitate. Her blazing love for God has influenced thousands. At age 15 she entered a French convent, com-municating her unfolding spiritual life in short books and letters. Thérèse developed what she called

“the little way,” serving God by persistent endeavor in the details of everyday life, a task no easier for a clois-tered nun than it is for us in our families, communities, and workplaces. At times she could not pray, and suf-fered greatly from the tuberculosis that killed her at 24. The Church quickly declared her a saint and doctor of the Church, one of only three women with that title. Saint Thérèse had a firm hope of heaven and saw it as a seamless transition from the pilgrimage of faith here on earth. Reflections ~ Reflexiones: GOSPEL: Luke 21: 5-19

Jesus warns his followers not to be deceived about the end of the world. The signs of the end (wars, earth-quakes, famines) will occur repeat-edly. Christians will be persecuted and will not be able to trust even some of their own family members. But Jesus will not abandon them. He will give them the right words to speak when

they are on trial. By enduring whatever suffering comes, his disciples will be saved. Though their bodies may be persecuted, their spirits will remain unharmed. 1.) Which one might help you to live a fuller Christian life right now? How do you plan to "die with your boots on" while walking the way of Jesus?

EVANGELIO: Lucas 21: 5-19 Jesús dice a sus seguidores que no se dejen engañar sobre el fin del mundo. Los signos del final (guerras, terremotos, hambre) ocur-rirán repetidamente. Epiphany Parish News TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: With Thanksgiving approaching, we think of the quest of the Puritans who arrived on the Mayflower from their first exile in Leyden, Holland. Like the Catholics of England, they were religious dissenters who suffered penalties for not participat-ing in the worship life of the established church. The Catholics established monas-teries, schools, and convents on the con-tinent to assure the vigor of their faith’s intellectual and spiritual life. The Puritans fled to the tolerant Netherlands with similar hopes of preserving their way of life, but were unable to adapt to Dutch ways. There were Catholics who made a similar colonial journey. The hero of the story is George Calvert, Lord Baltimore, the former Secretary of State of Britain and a Catholic. He proposed that King Charles I establish a proprietary colony that he would own and rule, named Maryland in honor of the Catholic Queen Henrietta Maria. George Calvert died un-expectedly in the midst of this project, but his son Cecil faithfully carried out his father’s wishes. Maryland became a sym-bol of freedom for wealthy recusant Eng-lish families, as well as for the poor who held to the Catholic faith despite great hardship. From the start, the colony was open to Protestants and Catholics equally, and the seeds of the religious freedom so dear to the American spirit were sown with the first colonists in 1634. —Rev. GOD’S HEALING JUSTICE: An old expression holds that the sun-warmed stone heals. Perhaps. But Mala-chi explains that only dark, sunless days are in store for those who do not find a place for God in their lives. Conversely, he tells us that the warmth and light of God’s healing justice await those who fear the Lord. That’s a pretty comforting notion—especially now in the already short and growing even shorter days of November. It’s the sun-warmed stone, and then some. Paul speaks to us of justice as well, but points out that it is not a passive thing. To be treated justly, we need to do our fair share. If we are diligent and perse-vere we will be rewarded with and by the fruits of our labor. Lastly, Luke, too, tells us to persevere—in faith, this time—and our lives will be secure in God regardless of how we are treated by our enemies. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Parish Council: We would like to congratulate the follow-ing new elected Officers of the Parish Council: Kathy Fourre – Chairman Kathy Parish-Reese – Vice Chairman Tessie Evelyn Velicaria – Secretary Fr. Tungol briefly described the roles of each officer; he reminded Council mem-bers of the basic duties of the Council and the Commission members. P.C. acts as an advisory group for the parish in the name of the Pastor. It is composed of the commissioner and vice commis-sioner of the Spiritual Life, Education, Social-Cultural, Youth, Outreach, Finance/Temporal commissions and 2 At-Large members. Commissioners observe, study and present concerns, projects, and make recommendations to the P. C. They do not speak for themselves but for the commission they represent. The role of the P.C. is patterned on the priestly (to sanctify), prophetic (to educate) and kingly (to serve) role of Christ and of each baptized Christian. The P. C. at Epiphany not only does the above but, upon approval by the pastor, imple-ments; thus the P.C. at Epiphany can be described as a working council. Commissions are composed of commit-tees. In a Commission, whenever there are changes, all members are informed. The commissioner oversees, he/she does not do everything, is accountable to the commission and must try theirbest to handle conflicts, first.Each Commission retained the previous Commissioner/Vice C. except for Finance, Willie Lim is now the Finance Commissioner. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE: En 1769 los franciscanos bajo la di-rección de fray Junípero Serra alzaron una cruz en Alta California, dedicando la primera misión en la zona a san Diego de Alcalá. Diego, cuya fiesta es el 13 de noviembre, fue un franciscano del siglo XV. Este santo español nunca fue sacer-dote, prefiriendo servir a Dios como hermano lego (laico) ayudando a los pobres y cuidando a los enfermos. Siempre fue un humilde servidor de los demás. Aun cuando lo hicieron guar-dián (líder franciscano) nunca dejo de servir a los pobres, los enfermos y a sus hermanos franciscanos. Su afán por dar a los pobres las cosas del convento lo llevaba a esconder sus donaciones en su manto. Una vez un hermano le pre-guntó que escondía y el mintiendo res-pondió: “rosas”. El hermano insistió ver-las y en lugar de la comida que llevaba a los pobres, aparecieron rosas y más ro-sas. Pero el profeta Malaquías explica que a aquellos que no encuentran un lugar para Dios en sus vidas sólo le espe-ran días oscuros, sin sol. El profeta nos dice que, a la inversa, el afecto y la luz de la justicia sanadora de Dios aguardan a aquellos que temen al Señor. Esa es una noción bastante consoladora –especialmente ahora durante los días breves, cada vez más breves, de noviem-bre. Es la piedra calentada por el sol, y mucho más. Pablo, igualmente, nos habla de jus-ticia pero señala que esta no es algo pa-sivo. Para ser tratados con justicia, debe-mos aportar nuestra parte. Si somos dili-gentes y perseveramos, seremos recom-pensados con y por los frutos de nuestra labor. Campaña Católica para el Desarrollo Humano (CCHD) El Domingo 27 de Noviembre la segun-da colecta es para La Campaña Católica para el Desarrollo Humano provee fon-dos a grupos que ayudan a los pobres en los Estados Unidos. Otorga becas para mejorar la educación, apoya desa-rrollo económico y ayuda a las comuni-dades a proveer viviendas para las per-sonas de bajos ingresos. Los comisionados obser-van, estudian y presentan preocupacio-nes, proyectos, recomendaciones al Pa-rish Council No hablan por sí mismos sino por la comisión que representan. El papel del Parish Council Está modelado sobre el papel sacerdotal (santificar), profético (educar) y real en servicio de Cristo y de cada cristiano bautizado.
