July 2015 Volume 53.7 The American colonies had just won the War for Independence. King George III now reluctantly had to recognize the “United States of America” as an independent, sover- eign nation. The Continental Con- gress now had the daunting task of drafting a document that would uni- fy this new nation of 13 semi- autonomous “states.” The Declaration of Independence now served as something of a “Vision Statement:” “This is who we are.” Now, it needed a “Mission Statement:” “This is what we do.” It also needed something like a Business Plan: “This is how we’ll do these things.” And so our Found- ers drafted, and the States voted to ratify, our Constitution and its historic Bill of Rights. (Keep all of this in mind on July 4th and beyond). Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church is also in a new era. For the American colonists, a war had to be fought to enforce the written Declaration that severed their ties with England. But for our church, it was simply the departure of a long-tenured Sr. Pas- tor that has thrust us into a new era. “The new normal.” What should we be doing? The an- swer is surprisingly simple, as in, “Simple Church,” the book that all of our leaders (Elders, MLC, staff) read a number of months ago. It led us to adopt our new Vision and Mission. These two things will sustain us no matter how many staff members we have or don’t have; or who serves in leadership or doesn’t. Think of these brief statements as our new founding documents. They will guide all that we do from now on. They are sur- prisingly simple, but ever so pro- found: VISION: “Lifelong Transformation in Christ” MISSION: 1) Meet Jesus; 2) Make Friends; 3) Make a Difference. Last month about 640 people im- pacted our community on “Make A Difference Sunday.” They did this because they have met Jesus and are continuing to make friends within this great body of believers. And God receives all the glory for this marvelous work He is doing in and through us! It’s that simple. Discipleship

Many people have a warped viewpoint of who God the Father really is. They think that He is just a God of wrathful lightning bolts and that Jesus somehow holds Him back from smiting people. But that’s not at all who the Bible says He is, it shows us the unique attributes and characteristics that belong to God the Father. Through this three-part se-ries, your relationship with the Father will grow as He shows you who He really is!

Make A Difference Sunday: From BSLC Women’s Ministry Blog

Last Sunday was one of the coolest Sundays ever for me at Beautiful Savior in La Vista, Nebras-ka. "Make a Difference Sunday" followed an emotional weekend where the entire church paid tribute to our beloved Senior Pastor Keith Grimm, who accepted a call to serve a congrega-tion in the Minneapolis area. It is definitely apparent that God is doing a new thing! Those in leadership made the decision to not hold any services on Sunday morning. Instead, the entire church was encouraged to become involved in a service project of some kind, essentially sharing the love of Christ in a tangible way across the Omaha area. I gotta tell you, I was a bit unsettled about this whole idea. No church? What about those who don't want to do anything other than attend church-as-usual? (Like me.) Let's say a person isn't physically able to paint a wall, or clean a yard, or... (Like me.) What will the person who attends church with me think?

(Yep, me.) And for goodness sake, did anyone consider all of those who didn't get the "memo?" What happens when they show up at 8:00? 9:30? 11:00? Waiting until the last hour, my husband and I finally decided to take the plunge and join the hundreds of others who did something different on "Make a Difference Sunday." (Too late to get the t-shirt, however.) God really does want us to make a difference in people's lives--to reach out and help others. And, it never fails, He makes a difference in us as we help others! We joined the group that packed meals for kids in Nepal. Not only did we get 16,092 meals packaged and boxed in 3 hours, but we got to meet lots of people. (Now when I see Carolyn at church, I will remember those hours we spent togeth-er weighing bags.) It was so fun working with others and seeing entire families being involved! I was reminded once again how the church--the body of Christ--works better when all parts are present and engaged. The fact that our group was just a small part of the bigger picture of "Make a Difference Sunday" really amazed me. The statistics are incredible (and I'll just list a few): 640 volunteers participated, doing everything from serving lunch at the fire and police stations to helping shut-ins with yard work; from writing letters to missionaries and service men and women to doing intentional acts of kindness at the local HyVee grocery store. When was the last time you had your windshield washed free of charge while filling up? As one Facebook-er reported, "It was an inspiring day!" I agree! And in a way, I'm kind of sad that I have to wait until next year to "Make a Difference" on a Sunday. I'm really thankful that I got out of my pew to become involved. Stepping out of my comfort zone to serve...God always blesses. Remember, you can make a difference every day! When you do, that's often when God chooses to make a difference in your life, too. What do you say? Let's be the church...together. Jeanne Johnson

Ladies in Fellowship Together (LIFT)

A huge “Thank you!” to everyone who donated food at the “Make A Difference Sunday” work day on June 7. We had a very full (even the cab) pick up load of food for the pantry. What a blessing!

Please remember to bring home those unused soaps and shampoos that you find in hotel rooms. These are great items to donate to the pantry for toiletry bags for our cli-ents.

Gently used summer clothes especially for children will be in demand in coming weeks. We can also accept toys and games for outdoor play. However, please, no winter cloth-ing or books; we do not have storage space for out of sea-son clothes and most books are not in demand and become a storage problem.

We have been a little short of volunteers, especially in the food packing department. If you can volunteer, we urge you to contact Tammy Latimer, 402-547-3553 or email [email protected]. Our directors need to know whether we have enough volunteers for a given day. For other questions about the pantry please contact Mark or Cheryl Roth (402-339-0308), email [email protected] or Tim or Susie Fjelstad, 402-290-3064, [email protected].

LAMP Canada Team We want to thank everyone that helped us with our bake sale fund-raiser. So many wonderful people were willing to bake deli-cious treats! And people were so very generous with buying the baked goods and donating. Because of your support and generosity, we made enough to pay for two plane tick-ets! Thank you!

Please keep the LAMP teams in your prayers this month, es-pecially as they travel to the two communities to teach VBS and minister in other ways as God leads. The Big Trout Lake, Ontario team leaves July 9th, teaches the week of July 13-17th, and returns home on the 19th. Team members are Kari Lewis (team leader), Mike Jaeger, John Bergoch, and Deb-bie and Rich Boehne from the Omaha area; Heather Wong from Toronto; and Cindy Gleisman, Janet Houghton, and Linda Stoetzer from Michigan. The team traveling to Wap-ekeka, Ontario will be leaving on July 15th, teaching July 20-24th, and returning home on July 26th. Team members are Kari Lewis (team leader), Jeanne Johnson and Kayla Welsh from Omaha and Heather Wong from Toronto.

Please pray for safety and health, energy, open hearts in the communities, lots of kids ready to learn about Jesus, and favor with adults in community. The team has devotion books for anyone interested in praying along with the team. Please contact [email protected] to receive a copy and be added to the email prayer list.

Dear Friends in Christ, Hope your summer is go-ing well. It is always very quiet in the preschool during the summer months with the students on break. It is a great time to organize, order and get school rolling for the fall. Some-times it is TOO quiet, so feel free to come down for a visit anytime and say hi!

We are continuing to accept registrations for September and have just a few slots left - 7 for our (T/TH ) 3-year-old class and 9 for our (M/W/F) 4 and 5-year-old class. Sorry, but our M-F class is full. If you know of anyone looking for a quality, fun, spiritually and academically driven preschool, please send them our way.

More information can be found at kidnect.org, by calling the preschool direct line at 402-331-2681 or emailing me at [email protected]. Thanks and talk to you soon! Pam Prazan

July is Ultra Violet (UV) Safety month. Summer is time for a lot of outdoor activities. When I was growing up there wasn't much information regarding skin can-cer or what the sun could do to damage your skin. In fact, we used to put baby oil on to enhance the tanning process. We would spend the days outdoors with no sunscreen protection on at all. I am writ-ing this to inform you what UVA and UVB rays and what to look for on your skin.

What are UVA and UVB rays? Ultraviolet radiation is a form of electromagnetic radiation. UVA rays are the weakest of the UV rays. They can cause skin cells to age and can cause some indirect damage to the skin cells. UVA rays are mainly linked to long term skin damage like wrinkles but are also thought to play a role in some skin cancers. UVB rays are slightly stronger. They are mainly responsible for direct damage to the DNA. These are the rays that cause sunburn and thought to cause most skin cancers. UVC rays are the strongest of the UV rays. UVC rays are not present in sunlight. They can be found in some man-made sources such as welding torches and mercury lamps.

Limiting exposure is the best way to prevent skin cancer and sunburns. The following are some helpful hints to avoid getting a sun burn. Avoid the sun at the peak times of burn from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Summer is the season of the year that UV rays are the strongest. People burn easi-er the higher the altitude you are. Clouds can filter some of the UV rays, however you should still wear sunscreen on cloudy days. Reflection of UV rays off of water, snow, sand or grass can also increase your exposure.

Stay in the shade during the hours of 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Wear clothing that covers your arms and legs. Wear a wide brimmed hat that covers your face, head, neck and ears. Wear sunglasses that wrap around and blocks both UVA and UVB rays. The American Cancer Society recom-mends a sunscreen of SPF 30 or greater. Apply sunscreen to exposed skin. Don't forget the tops of your ears. Sun-screen needs to be reapplied every 2 hours at least. This is one of the common mistakes that people make.

Avoid tanning beds why? Tanning beds/lights emit UVA rays that are according to the FDA are carcinogenic to humans. The most important warning sign for melanoma (skin cancer) is a new spot on the skin or a spot that is changing in size, shape, or color. Another important sign is a spot that looks different from all of the other spots on your skin (known as the ugly duckling sign). If you have any of these warning signs, have your skin checked by a doctor.

Last month 53 middle school, high school, and adults ventured out to Colorado for an unforgettable experience. During our nine day adventure, students grew in their re-lationships with each other and Jesus. Everyday presented a new chal-lenge. Students spent the first two days serving camp in various ways including stain-ing buildings, clearing trails, and working on the camp stables. Everyone got dirty! Students started everyday with worship and a word from God and ended the days with testimonies around the campfire on how they felt God working through them or through others.

The confirmation students spent time wrestling with the theme of “Survivor” and grew in their understanding of “Prayer, Serving, and Living” out their faith through the GOSPEL Journey.

GOSPEL Journey: 1. God; 2. Our; 3. Sin; 4. Paying; 5. Everyone; 6. Life

The high school students explored what it means to “Walk this Way.” Students studied the life of Daniel. Daniel lived in a culture very similar to ours today. The world says “Do whatever you want, with whoever you want, whenever you want. Jesus says, “WALK THIS WAY!” Each day’s focus was different.

What we believe to be true about… 1. God determines what you allow in your life. 2. Jesus influences how you handle challenges. 3. Jesus influences who you become (man or woman). 4. Jesus influences the decisions you make. 5. What you believe about Jesus to be true influences everything.

Everyday after lunch students spent time in their cabins investing into one another’s lives and their relationship with God in discussion on the days topic. Everyday they had the opportunity to try something new and grow in relationship with Jesus. Everyone loved their time in the mountains. The week included low element team building, archery/tomahawk, horseback riding, rock climbing & repelling, high ropes adventures, 3:45 a.m. sunrise hike & worship, and white water rafting. It was a blast. I will let you read for yourselves from one of the students who had first hand experience last month on his relationship with Jesus and His miraculous power!

My name is Christian Kasel and on June 5th-13th, I spent a week in the mountains of Colorado with 53 other students and adults and man did we have a blast! We left bright and early Friday morning and 15 hours later arrived at camp. That night began a week of life change that was beginning to shape who I am today, a child of God. Every morning we had worship at 7:45 a.m. at Moose Manner and breakfast at 8:00 a.m. Each day there was Bible study beginning at 10:15 a.m. and ended with the lunch bell! Following lunch, until 1:45 p.m., we had cabin time, where we'd discuss the topics we'd talk about in worship and Bible study. Our afternoon activities took place after our cabin time up until dinner every night at 5:30 p.m. with some free time in-between. Of course we had a little free time to shower, brush teeth, etc. before our intense game time. We played a bunch of games but a few of my favorites where Shuffle Your Buns, Noodle Ninja, Cat and Mouse, and an almost endless amount of card games. One of my favorite parts of the day was campfire. At campfire we'd share testimonies, stories, talked more in depth of the topics from Bible study, and worshipped! It is at campfire that I shared my testimony for the first time in front of strangers, who are now my friends. Our schedule looked identical for the most part with different afternoon activities. Our first two days (Saturday and Sunday) we served around the camp in different capacities varying from post hole digging, to staining Moose Manner (main conference hall), to pushing down burnt trees! One of my favorite days was Wednesday where I got to get up early in the morning (3:45 a.m.) to hike Cedar Mountain and watch the sunrise and then later that day we went rock repelling and rock climbing. Friday we went white water rafting, another new favorite, on the Arkansas riv-er. The water was 42 degrees and it was mostly glacial runoff with a little bit of rain mixed in. It was very chilly to say the least. In fact it was so cold that when we were done my lower half was completely numb. My life was forever changed that week. I left wanting more of Jesus. The following week after I returned home from camp, I had the oppor-tunity to get baptized in front of family and my new friends in Christ. It was a statement of faith to God’s grace for me. I am forever changed! My name is Christian Kasel and I am a Child of God!

ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED

Sometimes we think about leading a life group, we think that the leader has to be a Bible ex-pert that has all the answers. We are looking for hosts who want to gather people together to build relationships with each other and grow in their relationship with God. I encourage you to spend some time in prayer and ask God if He could use you to start a new life group this fall. Let me know if God is leading you to be a part of encouraging the spiritual growth of our church and lifelong transformation in Christ! Pastor Elliott: [email protected], [email protected].
