    What is It

    PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN

The principles of design refer to the organization of a work of art. The

principles of design are as follows.

    1. Balance in design is so natural that one is not even aware of it when it is

present, but when it is violated there is a sense of discomfort or annoyance.

    a. Formal or symmetrical balance

If objects are alike or are equally forceful in appearance they will attract the same

amount of attention, therefore should be equidistant from the centre.

    b. Informal or asymmetrical balance

This second type of balance is called informal, or asymmetric balance.

Whether one uses formal or informal balance depends largely upon the following

    conditions.

The spirit of the age in which one lives

The use to which the garment is to be put

The type of people for whom the dress is planned

    One’s own personality

    2. Emphasis

Refers to the dominance of one part with subordination of others. Designers often

create emphasis partially through the careful arrangement of line, texture and

colour. It could also be called as focal point.

  • P a g e | 7

    3. Harmony

Refers to unity of design with slight contrast or variety to prevent monotony. If

the principle of proportion, balance, rhythm and emphasis are applied creatively, the resultant design is said to have the harmony.

    4. Proportion or Scale

Good proportion refers to pleasing relationship between the sizes of various design details in a dress and between the garment itself and the design details.

Proportion includes the relationship of height, width, depth and the surrounding

    space of each design.

Scale: refers to the relationship between the garment and its design details as

well as between the wearer and the garment.

    5. Rhythm

Refers to the smooth movement of the eye from one part of a design to another. Rhythm can be obtained through regular repetition of shapes and decorative details

    like tucks, pleats, scallops, buttons.

  • P a g e | 8

    Elements of Design

Elements are the tools used to create a design. Elements of design include:

    1. Line:

A mark used to denote directions or contours. When lines meet, space is enclosed and a space is defined.

There are two kinds of lines in garments: a. Directional line such as vertical, horizontal, diagonal, checkered, broken

and curved. These affect the height and size of an individual. Lines

serve as clothing designs like the art of printing flowers, dots and on the fabric.

    a. Horizontal and b. Checkered c. diagonal

    Vertical

    b. Structural lines are found on necklines, armholes, hemlines, darts, side

seams, sleeves, collars, tucks and pleats of garments.

    a. with bateau neckline b. with V neckline

    2. Color

Colors are important to make things look good, whether it’s the clothes

you wear or the presentation you give at work. If you can’t trust your own

judgement, understand and rely on the basics of color theory to always pick the

    right colors.

  • P a g e | 9

Hue is the name given to a color (red, blue, etc.)

Value is the lightness or darkness of a color.

Intensity (also known as saturation or chroma) the brightness or dullness of a

    color.

Primary colors are colors red, yellow and blue.

Secondary colors will result when you mix two primary colors like mixing red and

yellow get orange; mixing blue and yellow, you get green; mixing red

    and blue, you get violet.

Tertiary colors are derived by mixing a primary color with a secondary color.

All colors have tints and shades. A tint is the variation of that color when mixed

with white; a shade is the variation of that colors when mixed with black.

There are warm and cool colors. Each has its own purpose to convey emotions.

Warm colors exhibit energy and joy (best for personal messages), while

cool colors convey calmness and peace (best for office use).

Neutral Colors are black, white and grey.

    Different Types of Color Schemes

    1. Monochromatic Color Scheme - the entire space is

dictated by one color. Example light yellow blouse, with

dark yellow suit and a very dark yellow accessories.

    2. Analogous Color Scheme - This color scheme is relegated to just three colors—

meaning you pick a color on the wheel (say, dark green)

and then use the colors on either side of it (in this case,

    light green and light blue).

    3. Complementary Color Scheme

The colors are complementary to each other, meaning

directly across from each other on the wheel, example

yellow and purple, orange and blue, and red and green.

    4.Split-Complementary Color Scheme

  • P a g e | 10

This color scheme uses one main color on the wheel and

then the two colors that are on either side of its

    complementary counterpart.

    3. Shape/Form: Refers to the form of a person showing the curves of the body.

Wide full shapes will make you look larger while trim, compact dress will make you look smaller. Straight, tubular shapes will make the wearer look taller while fitted

clothes will reveal the natural body contours.

    4. Space: It is an area inside an enclosed shape. A surface area that has height, width and the illusion of depth. The use of space can lead to an interesting design.

An overuse of space could make the design confusing while an empty space could be unattractive and boring.

    5. Texture: It is the surface quality of an object rough, smooth, silky etc.

    Rough smooth silky

    FABRICS

Fabric is a cloth made of fibers. Fibers are hair –like strands that are wound to make a yarn or thread to make fabric. Fabric is the cloth or material used

in making our clothes, curtains, tablecloths, sheets and many other items.

    Types of Fabric

Woven Fabric is made up of fibers which run straight at ninety degrees angle to each other.

  • P a g e | 11

Knitted fabric has loops of fiber that allow the fabric to stretch. The amount and

direction of stretches are all variables.
