THE TEMPLE AND WORSHIP

In all of today’s read-

ings, the temple is promi-

nently mentioned. Ezekiel

speaks of streams of

living water flowing out

from the temple, water-

ing the desert, bringing

life to all living things,

offering fresh healing to God’s people.

Paul reminds the Corinthians that their faith rests

upon the firmest of foundations, Christ himself. More

than that, Paul reveals that those who follow Christ are

themselves temples, temples of the Holy Spirit; that is,

God dwells not only with them, but in them.

For the Jews of Jesus’ time, the temple had come to

be identified with the presence of God and the only

place where authentic worship of God took place. Jesus

had a different perception. Jesus identified himself not

with the temple, but as the temple. In so doing, Jesus

indicated a dramatic shift in what it means to worship

God, to be in God’s presence. No longer was a place to be

the focus of prayer. Instead, a person, the person of

Jesus Christ, becomes the center of our worship. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

BLESSED ABBA GHEBREMICHAEL OF ETHIOPIA (1788-1855) AND HIS SEARCH FOR GOD'S TRUTH Blessed Abba GhebreMichael, the “servant of St. Michael,” began his search for God's truth as a monk in the Orthodox Church of Ethiopia. He is now Abba, honored as a patriarch of the Catholic Church, and is one step from sainthood. How did this come about? Through his study and friend-

ship with Father Justin de Jacobis, the Italian Vincentian priest and Catholic missionary to Ethiopia, GhebreMichael accepted the truth that Jesus is truly human as well as di-vine (as defined by the Council of Chalcedon in 451 A.D.), not divine only, as held by his branch of the Orthodox faith, a division which split the Orthodox Monophysite (one nature) Church from Rome. He was baptized Catholic in February 1844, and ordained a Catholic priest in 1851. He won many converts to the Catholic faith, along with persecution from religious and political leaders, imprisonment and many cruel beatings. During his torture he stated: “I believe in the faith of the Holy Church, Catholic, Apostolic, and Roman! O my God, I beg you to assist me by your grace and receive me in your great mercy!” He was saved from execution, but the 67-year-old man of faith was forced to walk in chains for several months behind the emperor's army, until on the feast of St. George the Martyr, 29 August 1855, he an-nounced he would die that day, sat against a stone under the shade of an oak tree, peacefully died in chains and was bur-ied there. On 31 October 1926, GhebreMichael was beati-fied by Pope Pius XI. Let us pray that many will be con-verted to the faith through friendly conversation and that we will have his faith, strength, persistence, and openness to the truth. Pray as well for his canonization. Pray to him for a miracle of conversion for all who have left the faith. Read more about GhebreMichael and others in Saints of Africa by Vincent J. O'Malley, C.M., published by Our Sunday Visitor, 2001.

present, featuring works of art for sale, including jewelry, ceramics,

pottery, glasswork, clothing, knitwear, textiles, home décor, toys, such

of all things handmade. Here, unique creations will be available for sale,

in time for holiday shopping, amidst fun activities for all ages.

“We are excited to continue the idea of ‘the work of human hands’

with offering our vendors’ handmade goods, as well as opportunities for

children to participate in crafts and activities, and of course, all the

yummy food, including the freshly made kettle corn that fills the air at

The Market, said Julia Moore, Co-Creator of The Market at St. Eliza-

beth Parish School. She added, “It is a great opportunity to take time for

some simple family fun before all the hustle and bustle of the holidays,

and perhaps get some early shopping done with unique handmade

goods. Join the feast!”

The Market, at St. Elizabeth Parish School, located at 1840 N. Lake

Avenue, Altadena, Calif. 91001, will also offer a raffle, cupcake walk,

food and treats for sale, face-painting, bounce house, and a children’s

used book sale. In the spirit of St. Elizabeth, The Market seeks to en-

courage and affirm creativity in all. For more information, please visit

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

ADOPT-A-FAMILY PROGRAM

Again this year the St.

Elizabeth St. Vincent de

Paul Conference will be

sponsoring its Adopt-a-

Family Program that pro-

vides families who need a helping hand with food

market and department store gift certificates

so that they may enjoy a joyful Christmas. A

sign-up table will be located in the North Patio

after the masses on the weekend of November

29th.

EVANGELIZATION

I will go anywhere and do anything in order to

communicate the love of Jesus to those who

do not know him or have forgotten him. —St. Frances Xavier Cabrini
