JOAN BONDOC

One of the things we have tolook into is wastage. Our tablewastage is significant, ani Banayosa isang panayam sa telepono ka-hapon.

Tinukoy ni Banayo ang mga ku-makain sa mga restoran na nag-aalok ng unlimited rice.

They order more than theycould eat and they dont finish it,aniya. Just get what you need.

Samantala, pumalag ang mgatagapakinig ng RADYO INQUIRER dz-IQ 990 ang payo ni Banayo.

Pati ba naman yon pakikiala-man mo pa?

But its good. At least, I get mymoneys worth, ayon sa isangtakapakinig na nagpakilalangMaynila from Malacaang.

Old panciteria worththe trip to Chinatown

those early times, butI am very curious athow our parents hadtheir own simple foodtrips. Many dinersstill come here andreminisce about those

days when life wassimpler and trafficwas nonexistent.

I really couldntdecide what to startwith. We ended upordering quite a fewdishes, starting withhototay soup, whichwas delicious. Thenwe dug into PinsikFritodeep-friedwantons stuffed with

ground pork, fol-lowed by LumpiangShanghai, CamaronRebusado, LenguaBaboy, Lapu-lapuSlice, Camaron Rel-leno, the house spe-cialty Crispy FriedChicken, Pancit Can-ton and ShanghaiFried Rice.

These are yourtypical panciteriabestsellers, and I

loved them. I was al-so eyeing dishes such

as Pata Tim, LechonKawali, Shrimp withGreen Peas, Ampalayacon Carne, Peg YokFrito, Fried Meatballs,

Pancit Bihon and afew others for acomeback.

    However, thestuffing of the

Shanghai, CamaronRelleno and Pinsikwere not great thatday. Tired cook, maybe? Also all over

our table were cupsof sweet and soursauces for all thedeep-fried ulams.

All in all, it wasworth the trip. On theside streets of the Sta.

Cruz rotunda are Ong-pin, with its own in-teresting dining choic-es, and Florentino

IGOT a text from my cousin Dr.

Joey inviting me to an old panci-teria in Sta. Cruz, Manila. All I

knew was we were going with some-

one who grew up in the Chinatownarea and is familiar with the secrets ofChinatown dining.

I braved the trafficof Manila and endedup beside the Sta.Cruz church. Fromthere, I walked toRonquillo Street andlooked for an oldpanciteria. As soon asI walked in, I saw inbold letters, RAMON

    LEE PANCITERIA,1929. I immediatelyliked what I saw.

Another friendwho joined us,Wiljun, told me how,as a little boy in the1950s, he would tagalong with his fatherto these early foodplaces. And thatshow he was intro-duced to Chinese cui-sine.

Ramon Lees isyour typical Manilapanciteria, with slow-moving fans, darkbrown chairs, thickglasses and deliciousfood. To most of ourparents, this was theircomfort food.

    Edu Manzanohappily back

Because, dont look now, butEdus back in the TV business intop form and none the worsefor wear, as the new game mas-ter on Family Feud on GMA 7.We caught the returning and re-furbished morning program onits first week of telecasts, andfound it a refreshing viewingexperience, due in the part toEdus idiosyncratically antic way

of hosting the program.True, the show offers fewsurprises in revival but it fitsEdu like a glove, unlike his pre-vious program, the cynicalthrust of which didnt suit himat all. True enough, it didntcatch on with viewers.

One day last week, the twofamily teams were composed ofPia Guanio, Cherie Gil, ChinaCojuangco and Chia Hoffmanon the womens team and fourgroovy guests on the other side.At first, the lovely ladies had aclever run of the place, but theyended up losing due to someunfortunate miscalculations.

Still, they were an entertain-ing foursome especially Pia,who turned out to be a sweetlysassy team captain. Shouldntshe be given a game or quizshow of her own? Paging GMAmanagement.

The guys won, but theyturned out to be a rather lack-luster lot. And their champi-onship round was a major dis-appointment, with so manyeggs (zeroes) being chalkedup and laid that theshow ended up lookinglike a paltry poultry.

    But Edu made theproceedings come

off enough for usto conclude thatthe new FamilyFeud wontmake a pre-mature exitfrom thetube.

    Inviterightcelebs

To make it lastlonger, the show couldwork harder to invite theright celebrities to com-pete. Some of last weekslow-wattage guests fadedinto the woodwork muchtoo quickly and failed toadd to the games sass andsizzle.

Finally, is there a way tomake Family Feud come offmore authoritatively as a repos-itory of facts rather than gener-

ally held opinions? Its 100people say format is OK for themost part, but on occasion, some of its answers to quizquestions are too subjective andunrepresentative. We know thatthis is just a game show, but itwould be nice if its surveyswould come off as less, well, whimsical.

But not to worry, for the nextpart the returning show stillworks and so does its new host.

What else is up for Edu onTV? We trust that GMA 7 hasntforgotten that hes also a goodtalk show host, so it should belining up a new gabfest for himsoonest. He could sure teachmany of todays callow, youngand scripted-spiel-dependent

    on-cam talkers a thingor 10!

AFTER his last, late and unlamented gameshow, the nega format of which simplywasnt right for his warm, ebullient on-cam

personality, Edu Manzano went into a sort of tempo-rary underdrive while he sorted out his prospects.

    Happily, not for long.

    Filipino exorcist: Churchs

    frontline in war vs demons

saints to expel and defeatdemons through generations.

A figurine of St Michael theArchangel trampling Lucifer sitson a shelf, a graphic reminderof his extraordinary job.

Gods call to serveSyquia was ordained only 11years ago, after he had alreadyobtained a degree in psychologyat one of the Philippines lead-ing Catholic universities.

The second of four sons of aformer diplomat, he said he lefta comfortable life in one ofManilas exclusive, gated com-munities and employment in afamily-owned business after heheard Gods call to serve thechurch.

Growing up in a modernhousehold, he and his fourbrothers did not believe in pos-sessions which were madefamous in the 1970s Hollywoodfilm The Exorcist. But Syquiasaid he had always been fasci-nated by paranormal activitiesand devoured entire books onthe subject.

After he was ordained in2000, Syquia said he was post-ed at a Manila church where,

    outside its premises, occult

practitioners including spiritmediums, oracles and faithhealers also thrived.

His first case came when aman singled him out from agroup of priests and asked for

deliverance after confessing thathe had been deep into occultpractices.

How the man knew his namewas a mystery to Syquia, al-though he said deep in his hearthe knew just a week earlierhe had begun studying a bookon exorcism that he had boughtlong ago.

Syquia sought guidance fromthe the local bishop, whopromptly granted him the au-thority to carry out an exorcismguided by his knowledge of psy-chology.

I realised God was leadingme to this path. I have treatedhundreds and hundreds of casessince then, he said.

Syquia recalled an accom-plished female doctor who saidshe was befriended by demonsthat had appeared to her as be-nign dwarves that showered herwith good luck in the form of fi-nancial rewards.

    Her troubles began when she

decided to return to theCatholic Church and offer allher blessings to God.

Soon after, the demons tookover her body for hours at atime, while unexplained para-

normal activity began terroriz-ing members of her family,Syquia said.

When the time came tobless her with holy water avoice that wasnt hers shoutedfor us to stop, he said.

What really scared me wasthat this was the first time thatI saw something very alien inher eyes. I was looking at some-thing else. It was totally evil. The voice taunted Syquia andtold him to return to his man-sion and rich family, personaldetails that were unknown tothose in the room, he said.

We will never leave her,the demon said, according toSyquia.

Syquia said a barrage ofprayers eventually forced thedemon out, with the womannow a good friend and churchvolunteer.

With God by your side, youcan do no wrong, he said.

    ABLOOD-CURDLING scream echoes through

the Roman Catholic chapel in Manila as FatherJose Francisco Syquia says a prayer of exor-

cism over a Satanic cult member believed to be pos-sessed by the devil.

Its very painful, the womancries in an unearthly voice, her

body contorting in an attempt tobreak free from the tight graspof Syquias assistants. After afew minutes she falls silent, herlimp body exhausted.

The case is among hundredsdocumented on video and keptby Syquia, who heads the Mani-la Archdioceses Office of Exor-cism the only one that existsin the Catholic nation of 94 mil-lion people.

    In the frontline

She would have levitatedhad she not been restrained,Syquia said of the woman inthe video, portions of whichwere shown to AFP during arare interview at his office inthe basement of a seminary inManila.

Syquia believes he is in thefrontline of the battle betweengood and evil on earth.

There is agreat dramat-ic increase ofpossessionsright now, said the 44-year-oldpriest. Moreand more thedemons aregaining afoothold intothis society. While non-be-lievers oftenjoke about

the devil, anddemonic pos-sessions aretrivialised byHollywood,Syquia insist-ed the torment suffered by thosehe had healed was real.

I have seen scratches sud-denly appearing on their skin, ofinverted crosses on the forehead. These persons would be con-scious at the time, and they tell

me its like razor cutting from

the inside of the skin, he said.Demons could manifest

themselves in many ways andcould enter the human soulthrough occult and New Ageteachings that were becomingincreasingly popular in the gen-eral community, Syquia said.

The Catholic Churchs exor-cism ministry has throughouthistory tended to operate undera cloud of controversy and se-crecy.

Syquia said a conspiracy ofsilence had permeated the

church in the past, with itsleaders wary of being brandedas mediaeval as modern sciencetended to classify possessions asmedical conditions.

recently issued fresh guidelinesencouraging more exorcismsand for the church to be moreopen about the issue, he said.

Inspiring. I saw that the kids

look forward to repeating thisexperience. I love storytelling tokidsyou can really see their

have a positive impact on themwhen they get older. For Orais, the session was truly

enjoyable. I love kids and I reallyenjoyed interacting with them. Ireally think kids should be taught

early on, so that they will learn alot if they read a lot of books.

The Miss Philippines-Earthpageant will be held on June 5.

Ten-year-old Russell Mago, who will enter the fifth grade atJusto Lucban ElementarySchool, said his favorite storywas Alamat ng Papaya.

In the story, the Pya-a wereloyal to Reyna Lingap, even if

they had to offer up their lives,he said. Asked who his favoritestoryteller was, he shyly pointedat Orais. Ate Muriel is not only agood storyteller, she is pretty too.

READERS from different walks of lifea nun, apoliceman and three beauty queensreadaloud tales on courage to inspire the under-

privileged children at a special INQUIRER Read-Alongheld on Saturday at Welcome House in Paco, Manila.

Welcome House coordinatorand Good Shepherd Sister PilarVerzosa kicked off the session

with a retelling of the classicbiblical tale, David and Goliath, about a boy who defeats a giantwarrior by using his strengths.

Verzosa told the story withpropsa slingshot, sword andtape measure, which she usedto illustrate Goliaths heighttothe delight of the audience ofpublic school students from Pa-co and Pandacan.

Miss Philippines-Earth 2010Psyche Resus led the kids in asong and dance routine for theenvironment to loosen things up.

Miss Philippines-Earth 2011candidates Dianne Querrer,Muriel Orais and Tarhata Ricothen read Rene Villanuevas Ala-mat ng Papaya, about the Pya-as loyalty to their leader, ReynaLingap, and how their show ofcourage and loyalty led to thebirth of the first papaya. Thestory was published by Lampara.

Outstanding copThey were followed by Se-

nior Supt. Dionardo Carlos, oneof Metrobank FoundationsCountrys Outstanding Police-men in Service (Cops) in 2009,who read Adarna Houses Pa-trolman Ngiyaw, also by ReneVillanueva.

The story is about a dedicat-ed cat-policeman who eventual-ly reaped the fruits of his hardwork and diligence.

Carlos was obviously nostranger to storytelling, reading

his story in different voices and

shifting tempo now and then.Im used to reading to kids.

I think its good that kids have

the opportunity to attend story-telling sessions like this, saidCarlos, currently chief of theCommunity Relations Divisionof the National Capital RegionPolice Office.

Araw ng KagitinganI also think the story I read

was very apt. Today, Araw ngKagitingan, is a good day toshare a story about the courage ofour countrys policemen, he said, adding that the real heroes of thecountry were not only policemen, but teachers and soldiers as well.

I enjoyed reading the storyto the children because theywere very attentive, said SisterPilar, who had some theater ex-perience as a student at St. PaulCollege Manila.

I think the most importantthing is to share the moral ofthe story. Oftentimes, our per-ception of courage and heroismis too highthat you must diefirst, or have weapons to be re-

ally courageous. The story ofDavid showed the kids that be-ing humble and simple can alsolead to heroism, she said.

Welcome House, run by theGood Shepherd sisters, is a crisiscenter for abused and batteredgirls and women. The children inattendance were in the elemen-tary grades who receive educa-tional assistance from the nuns.

    Bring thank you

back into your lifeFor instance, theres signing

your name. Basic, yet a friendof mine who recently got mar-ried could not send out thank-you cards because she receivedseveral gifts that were un-signed. It happens.

Dont forget to sign yourthank-you cards, or be careful

not to say thank you for thewrong giftthis is funny, butthis has happened to me. Some-one sent me a text thanking mefor the cake I sent for Christ-mas, when, in fact, I had sent abottle of wine.

Remember, what you do willalways reflect who you are, sopay attention to details.

Going beyond gifts, the art ofthank you can be integratedinto our everyday lives, and this

is where the miracles of posi-tivism take place, going beyondetiquette.

Start a gratitude journal.Make a habit of being thankfulfor three normal and mundanethings that happened in yourlife for the day. Keep a specialnotebook for this.

Bring the art of sayingthank you back into your life, back into the every day. Recoverthe sense of gratitude. Not onlyis it the polite thing to do, butyou will find you will also be alittle happier every day.

    By Lia S. BernardoInquirer Lifestyle

THE ART of saying thank you is always rele-vant, but since we have just finished the gift-giving frenzy of the holiday season, and of

course Chinese New Year, it is an opportune time todiscuss gratitude.

The art of saying thank youseems to have disappeared. Tryto be conscious today as you goabout your tasks, and make amental note to yourself eachtime you hear the words thankyou. You may be surprised tonot hear it as often as you ex-pect. How many gifts receivedthis last holiday season haveyou given thanks for?

We all grew up with the cus-tomary thank-you cards. It is al-

ways a pleasure to receive ahandwritten thank-you note. Yet

in this modern age, there aremany other ways to say thankyou besides the thank-you note.A simple phone call will suffice. This will be a great way to keepin touch with a friend or rela-tive who has taken the time tosend you a gift for the holidays.

A text message will work, aswell. Simply saying thanks foryour thoughtfulness will surelybe appreciated by any recipient.

    Even a Facebook message

works. In short, there are so many

different ways to say thank you.It does not matter how; whatmatters is that you do.

Teach your childrenThis is also a practice I wish

parents would teach their chil-dren. Maybe this can serve as agentle nudge to have your chil-dren write, text or call theirgodparents who have giventhem Christmas gifts (its not

yet too late). This is simply going beyond

being polite, but also instills thevalue of gratitude.

This is something peoplecommonly overlook, not becausethey are impolite, but maybe be-cause they are simply rushing. But remember, whenever youoverlook something, and sendsomething out, it says a lot aboutwho you are to the other person.
