This is not a love song sets out to trace the genealogy of the relations between pop music and video-creation from the 1960s to today, with the emphasis on those moments in which there was feedback between the two manifestations as they explored the field of experiment, utopia and political incorrectness.

Since the 1960s, various generations of avant-garde artists have integrated into their production processes elements that are related with the attitudes and imaginaries of pop music.

Artists of the calibre of Andy Warhol, Vito Acconci, Dan Graham, Nam June Paik, Joseph Beuys, John Baldessari, Rodney Graham, Tony Oursler, Christian Marclay, Mike Kelley, Douglas Gordon, Jeremy Deller o Damien Hirst, and many more, down to today, have approached this genre in some of their most outstanding works, sometimes even collaborating with different rock bands or recording their own albums. Similarly, leading musicians such as John Lennon, David Bowie, Pete Towns-hend, Syd Barret, Brian Eno, Alan Vega, David Byrne, Laurie Anderson and members of essential bands of the last two decades, like Sonic Youth, REM, Blur, or Franz Ferdinand all trained at art school before becoming professional musicians.

El pasado enero, coincidiendocon su 66 cumpleaños, DavidBowie regresaba a la escenamusi-cal conWhere arewe now? (¿Dón-de estamos ahora?), un single yun vídeo lúcido y sombrío en elque el propio músico aparece co-mo si fuera una cabeza parlante,el cuerpo reducido al tamaño deunmuñeco de trapo,mientras ha-bla de “pasear a los muertos”.Una imagen inquietante y pode-rosa para la que Bowie contó conla complicidad de un reconocidoartista visual, Tony Oursler, conobra en los principales coleccio-nes del mundo y al que reciente-mente la Tate Modern dedicabauna exposición. La alianza entremúsicos y artistas no es nueva. ElpropioOursler ha estado vincula-dodesde siempre a lamúsica (for-mó parte en los setenta de la ban-da punk The Poetics) y el caso esque desde los primeros escarceosvisuales deAndyWarhol y la Vel-vet Underground –e incluso an-tes–, los caminos entre la vi-deocreación y la música pop nohan dejado de cruzarse. Puesbien, este será uno de los ejes te-máticos de Loop, certamen queha situadoBarcelona en una refe-rencia internacional de la vi-deocreación y que, en su undéci-ma edición –del 16 al 25 de ma-yo– estrecha su red de complici-dades con otros eventos cultura-les como Primavera Sound, cuyopúblico a buen seguro compartecon el del videoarte muchas másafinidades de las que pueda pare-cer a primera vista.Tras una primera década mar-

El Mediterráneo como históricocruce de culturas, como lugar deencuentro y enriquecimiento. Sieste es el tema de la 16.ª Fira Me-diterrània de Manresa, que ten-drá lugar el próximo noviembre,ningún otro artista como Jordi Sa-vall para encabezarla. El maestro

y violagambista, el músico cata-lán más internacional, entregadoa la búsqueda de lo que nos uneen la cultura (y no de lo que nossepara), ha sido nombrado artistainvitado de la edición de este año,edición que por cierto aún no tie-ne presupuesto, “algo más de unmillón de euros”, según afirmó laorganización.

Savall la inaugurará con su es-

pectáculo Mare Nostrum. Diálo-go de las músicas otomanas, cris-tianas y judías del Mediterráneo,centrado aquí en la música orien-tal y del repertorio turco-otoma-no. Para ello contará con el can-tante israelí Lior Elmaleh, educa-do en la música andalusí (lo queconservaron los sefardíes de latradición hispana), y Gursoy Din-çer (Estambul, 1975), el actual re-

presentante de la música turca.Savall celebrará un segundo con-cierto con repertorio celta, unprograma bellísimo en el que leacompañarán el arpista AndrewLaurence King y el percusionistaFrank McGuire.

La Fira programa además un ci-clo de documentales en el que po-drá verse Música Savall, HistòriaBorja, un retrato de año y mediode trabajo de Savall preparandomúsicas relacionadas con esta di-nastía, y Montserrat Figueres, laveu de l’emoció, el retrato de la au-sencia de la soprano, del vacíoque ha dejado tras su desapari-ción en noviembre del 2011.c

Amb la reconversió del Centre d’Arts SantaMònica, que deixarà de ser un centre d’exhibicióper convertir-se en un centre d’activitats, lesexposicions programades s’han quedat orfes. ElMuseu d’Història de Catalunya n’acollirà dues, perara. El 29 demaig inaugurarà Els plafons perdutsde l’AssociacióWagneriana, on esmostra coml’il·lustrador, escriptor i director teatral Adrià Guales va acostar aWagner. Són dotze llenços sobretela que, per primera vegada, surten de laBiblioteca de Catalunya. El setembre vinent elmuseu acollirà també l’exposició sobre el poetaJoan Teixidor comissariada per SamAbrams.

UnLoop amb tints de biennal d’art

L’11a edició de la fira de videoartLoop tornarà a convertir Barcelo-na en punt de trobada del sectordel 23 al 25 demaig. Des de demà,el festival Screenprendrà la ciutatambprojeccions i exposicions.

Les problemàtiquessocials ipolítiques i la relaciódelví-deo i lamúsica centraran el contin-gut de Screen Barcelona, el festivaldevideoartquearrencademàaBar-celona i que fa de pròleg de la firaLoop. És la primera vegada que elsorganitzadors, els galeristes CarlosDuran i Emilio Álvarez, han sugge-rit que els treballs que es podranveureenmuseus,galeriesd’art, cen-tres culturals, seus d’entitats, barsi altres espais, tinguin una temàti-ca determinada. “El fet que hi hagiuns eixos temàtics ajuda a definirels continguts de les exposicions, iel públic els agraeix. A l’hora de ferla programació hem tingut encompte també els punts d’explora-ció dels museus i dels col·lectius.Peraixòenguanyelsequipsdecura-dorshanguanyatpesenel festival”,explica Duran.

Entre els plats forts del festival–que s’enceta amb l’exposició del’Arts SantaMònicaAlta fidelitat–,elMacbapresentaràdemàTheradi-ant, del duet d’artistes The OtolithGroup, La Virreina acollirà l’expo-sició col·lectiva This is not a lovesong i la CasaAmèrica, la 5a setma-na de vídeo iberoamericà. Pel que fa a l’onzena edició deLoop, que se celebrarà a l’HotelCatalonia Ramblas, s’hi estrena-ran 18 vídeos. La fira reunirà 44galeries, unamenys que l’any pas-sat. El 84% són internacionals, so-bretot franceses. Pel que fa als 46artistes participants, només sissón d’arreu de l’Estat. Entre elsparticipants hi ha noms comIgna-

si Aballí, Elena Asins, Ryan Gan-der, RubénGrilo, GaryHill,HarunFarocki i Javier Pérez.

Amés de la fira i del festival, Lo-op traurà el cap al món acadèmicamb la col·laboració de laUniversi-tat de Barcelona. Del 22 al 24 demaigsecelebraràLoopStudies,queinclourà tres taules rodones a l’en-torn de les pràctiques col·laborati-ves en el campde la creació i la pro-duccióartístiques.Elpressupostdelfestival, la fira i les jornades és deprop de 800.000 euros.e

Jordi Savall serà el convidatde la FiraMediterrània

La FiraMediterrània deManresatindrà enJordi Savall el seupal depaller. Elmúsic inaugurarà el fes-tival el 7 de novembre amb un es-pectacle d’estrena i serà el prota-gonista dedosdocumentals.

BARCELONA. “Més enllà del debatde si hi ha una homogeneïtat enl’art, lamúsicao laculturamediter-ranis, preferim la tesi de FernandBraudel, que diu que laMediterrà-nia és una cruïlla, un lloc de troba-da. El caràctermediterrani es basaen la mescla”, afirmava ahir DavidIbáñez,directorde laFiraMediter-ràniadeManresa. I sihihaunartis-ta quehadefensat aquests ponts dediàleg entre la riba nord i sud delMare Nostrum i entre l’est i l’oest,és Jordi Savall. Elmestre que “con-necta cultures,músiques, personesi esperits” –deia Ibáñez– encaixaamb laFiraperquè ésun “músic in-ternacional”, que ha exercit de “co-

municadordecultures” ihaestatun“pioner”. Lluís Puig, director gene-ral de Cultura Popular, va destacarque “des de la música culta ha rei-vindicat la matèria popular com aentitat de primer ordre”.

Dos concerts i dos documentalsSavall s’ocuparàdelconcert inaugu-ral de la fira, el 7 de novembre, ambMare Nostrum, diàleg de músiquesotomanes, cristianes i juevesa laMe-diterrània. Serà la primera vegadaquetocaràaquest repertori sense laseva dona,Montserrat Figueras, lamort de la qual suposa que es puguiperdre tot el repertori que nomésella podia interpretar. Savall el re-cuperaràambduesveusmasculinesde primer ordre: l’israelià Lior El-maleh i el turc Gursoy Dinçer. El 9de novembre hi farà un concert derepertori celta, amb violes, arpa ipercussió.

Section 1

Pop and video-creation. Shared genealogies

This section includes more than 30 significant works in the history of video art and experimental film from the 1960s to 2013 that are formally and conceptually related to the iconographies of pop and rock. It is arranged by subject matter in five chapters:

1 - Art in pop / Pop in art (rooms 1, 2, 3 and 4)

Includes work by pioneering artists of pop art and video art like Andy Warhol, Ronald Nameth, Nam June Paik, Jud Yalkut, Eric Siegel and Yayoi Kusa-ma.

2 – Hysteria and religion (rooms 5, 6, 7 and 9)

Based on Dan Graham’s audiovisual and literary essay Rock My Religion, it deals with the failure of the utopias and the alienating components of rock and also includes works by Douglas Gordon, Tony Oursler, Laurence P. Berger and Largen & Bread.

3. ‘Non-musicians’ vs ‘non-artists’. Rock and conceptual art (room 7 and Miserachs Room)

Looks at the paradoxical relations between rock and conceptual art and new artistic behaviour like performance art. For artists like Dan Graham and Christian Marclay, interest in rock is tied to performance art, but also to punk and no wave, movements in which being able to play a musical instru-ment wasn’t always necessary in order to create music.

4 - ‘Rock and its double’. Pop music as a ‘toolbox’ (rooms 5, 9, 10, 11 and 12)

In the last 20 years, both art-inspired rock and rock related more or less consciously with art allow a glimpse of a melancholy awareness of the history that went before them, or, as Elizabeth Guffey points out, ‘a populist attempt to snatch history from the hands of professional historians’.

5 – Policies of dance music (rooms 14 and 15)

This section analyses the power of dance music to emancipate and its ability to visibilise identities, questions of race, gender, class, agit-pop, and some examples of civil rights demands through the festive repoliticisation of the public space. It includes works by Jeremy Deller, Charley Case, John Di Stefano, Mark Leckey, Adrian Piper, Charles Atlas and Assume Vivid Astro Focus.

Music for your eyes. Visual arts and the aesthetics of the videoclip. A history of exchanges

This section, divided into two chapters, is a journey through the history of the musical videoclip to review the careers of the most important authors of the last 40 years and their connections with contemporary visual arts and cinema. It includes a programme showing musical videos by artists like Andy Warhol, Tony Oursler, Judith Barry, Robert Longo, Joan Logue, Damien Hirst, Dough Aitken, etc., and another of artists who parody or redefine this aesthetic.

1 - This is not a music Video (room 16)

As a counterpoint to the previous chapter, this one gathers works of video-creation by contemporary artists who since the 1980s have appropriated the videoclip aesthetic and deconstructed the audiovisual stereotypes propounded by channels like MTV to send messages containing parody or criti-cism. It gathers works by artists like Dara Birnbaum, Joseph Beuys, John Sanborn, Kit Fitzgerald, Pipilotti Rist, Rodney Graham, Charles Atlas, Marc Bijl, Olaf Breuning, Cheryl Donegan, Joan Morey, Javier Largen, César Pesquera, Enrique Piñuel, Ana Laura Aláez, Bjørn Melhus, Carles Congost, Charley Case, Santiago Sierra, etc.

The six programmes making up this chapter explore the beginnings of the genre, back in the 1960s and 1970s, its ‘golden age’ in the 1980s, its esta-blishment as an ‘author’s medium’ in the 1990s, with essential names such as Chris Cunningham, Michael Gondry, Jonas Akerlund, Anton Corbijn, Flo-ria Sigismondi, David Fincher, Jonathan Glazer, Hype Williams, Tarsem, Stéphane Sednaoui, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, Spike Jonze and Mark Romanek, and the outlook for its future in the 21st century through a programme drawn up exclusively by the Primavera Sound festival.
