HOLY DOORS

Pope Francis has announced an opportunity for Catholics to obtain a plenary indulgence during the Year of Mercy by passing through a designated Holy Door during the Year of Mercy, or per-forming one of the corporal or spiritual works of mercy; and fulfilling the usual conditions of having the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, receiving sacramental Confes-sion and the Holy Eucharist, and praying for the intentions of the Holy Father.

The Jubilee Year of Mercy commenced when Pope Francis opened the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica on December 8, 2015 and on December 13, 2015 all the Holy Doors in Cathedrals and designated churches throughout the world opened to pilgrims.

Bishop Burbidge began the Diocesan observance of the Jubilee Year last December at Sacred Heart Cathedral, opening a special Holy Door, through which he invited pilgrims to enter during the course of the Year as a sign of their par cipa on. Addi onally, so that the faithful throughout our Diocese may make a pilgrimage more locally during the Jubi-lee, Bishop Burbidge designated three other churches as places of pilgrimage with a desig-nated Holy Door: Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary in Wilmington, Mother of Mercy Parish in Washington, and Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Newton Grove. We would like to gauge interest in making such a pilgrimage from here to our sister parish in newton grove to take advantage of the this special Jubilee Year of Mercy while we s ll are able.

Bishop Burbidge invites the Faithful to participate in the fifth annual Fortnight for Freedom, a 14-day celebration of our religious freedom. The theme this year is “Witnesses to Freedom.” As part of the theme, we will celebrate exemplary witnesses to freedom, in-cluding, Edith Stein, Oscar Romero, and the Little Sisters of the Poor. Witnesses to Freedom will celebrate the values of our faith with respect to the gift of life, marriage, conscience rights, health care and many humanitarian concerns. As part of our ob-servance of the Fortnight, you are invited to join with Bishop Burbidge for the celebration of Mass on Thursday, June 23 at 6:30 pm at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Raleigh. A reception and picnic sponsored by the Knights of Columbus will follow the Mass. For more information and educational resources on the Fortnight for Freedom, access our website at www.dioceseofraleigh.org/fortnight-for-freedom.
