Beaton gave police senior management and the media a brief background of crime threats in the cluster. “At all three stations we actually focus on gangsterism. Referring to gangsterism and drugs, Bea- ton said the threat and concern for Mfuleni police was gangsterism and robbery, which is concentrated in Bardale Village. “Another area of concern is Wesbank where mostly gang activities are reported, similarly in Happy Valley and near the Blackheath railway station.” Asked about community members’ re- quest for more patrols and a satellite police station in Wesbank, Beaton said the satellite police station and visible police are actually linked to each other. “There is a perception that there is a lack of visible policing. We are, however, imple- menting sector police in the area at the mo- ment and have done so successfully. “We have vehicles in the sectors that at- tend to the complaints and conduct crime prevention initiatives,” he said. “Our resources are currently stretched, so in terms of the establishment of a satellite police station, our strategy is to rather in- crease the personnel in terms of sector polic- ing. “Currently we have increased the deploy- ment. We have high visibility patrols, espe- cially over weekends when crime is at its highest, especially at night.” Colonel Luyanda Damoyi, station com- mander at Mfuleni police station which pa- trols this area, said over weekends they have additional personnel, including personnel from other units such as the Public Order Policing, who assist. “This is our peak time regarding gangsterism,” Damoyi said. Gangsterism is a major threat, say po-lice in the Kuils River Police Cluster, and a concern all three police stations

in the cluster are currently having to face.Speaking at a media briefing held at the

Kuils River station commander Col DysinJacobs said a similar strategy applies totheir operations in the crime ridden area ofKalkfontein. “Robberies especially are aproblem, more so in the morning and lateevening. We then have deployment in thearea,” Jacobs said.Beaton said it was very important to know

that there was a “very good and effective”gang strategy in the cluster and province.“We have regularmeetings where we only

address gangsterism. We have a database ofall the cases, weknowwho is involved in the-se cases and we have a very good cooperati-onwith crime intelligencewho giveus infor-mation about these gang’s activity.“We arrest a lot of gang members, and ha-

ve been successful in opposing bail in someof these cases.”He said the police have daily search and

seizure operations and also execute a lot ofsearch warrants in areas such as Wesbank.

“We confiscate a lot of firearms from thegangs, and ammunition.”He said apart fromWesbank and Kalkfon-

tein, the police in Kleinvlei also have to dealwith this threat.“The hotspots in Kleinvlei areMalibu Vil-

lage, Spandau, Melton Rose, Kleinvlei andalong Old Faure Road,” Beaton said.He said Old Faure Road near Mfuleni is a

“huge challenge”. The area is known forprostitution and robberies.“Here ladies of the night hang around the

areawhere gentlemanpick themup, do theirbusiness and then the so called clients getrobbed. This is a problem for us, butwe haveinterventions there,” he said.Asked to elaborate, Beaton said: “We dis-

covered that there is a lot of crime in thatarea, we therefore developed a database ofall of the cases. Every day there is deploy-ment in the area and since these interventi-ons crime has gone down.”

Kuils River Police Cluster last week discussed crime trends, hotspots and police successes.Brigadier Vincent Beaton, cluster commander (right) said all three police stations in the clusterfocus on gangsterism. With him is Colonel Daysin Jacobs Colonel Luyanda Damoyi.

Today they’re selling cupcakes andcooldrink, tomorrow they might end-up be-coming South Africa’s new financial advi-sors, chief executive officers or even audi-tors.Thesearepossible careerpaths for agroup

of youngsters from crime ridden Wesbankwho were taught the value of money at a re-cent market day held in the area. The market day was held on Friday at the

Multi Purpose Centre. Here children were given the opportunity

to sell, among other things, cooldrinks, cup-cakes, sweets and fruit.

The day was organised and hosted by theCentre for Justice and Crime Prevention.“The market is basically about teaching

young children to become entrepreneurs, even from selling flowers one can start abusiness, it’s stuff youhave at home that youcan sell,” Erica van der Heever, a memberof the CJCP, told TygerBurger. The children who were selected to partici-

pate in the day are part of the CJCP’s FamilyPreservationChildrenClub – an after schoolprogramme for children between the ages6 and 11 years old. Approximately 20 chil-dren participated in the day’s event.“They are all from Wesbank,” Erica said.Anthea Davids, project coordinator at the

CJCP, said themain objective of the daywas

to give children the opportunity to learnabout the value of money.“Most of them struggle withmoney and fi-

nances.“If their parents do notwork they can then

sell something and make money.“Sometimes they expect more from their

parents but they do not know the value ofwhat they receive,” Anthea added. The children had to calculate the money

they earned, subtract and add.“They enjoyed themselves,” Anthea said.A similar daywas held in Belhar recently. On Friday the children earned more than

R300.“We normally use themoney for activities

for them to participate in,” Anthea said.

The incident happened on Tuesday 29July, Gavin told TygerBurger this week.

“My daughter and I were at a karatesession that I give inMitchells Plain.Mywife decided to go visit her brother inhospital after dropping us off. She didnot feel too well and asked a friend totake her there,” Gavin explained.

Natasha andher friend stopped at a setof traffic lights at the AZ Berman andR30 0 crossing when a unknownman ap-proached them.

High school launches its very own magazineRICHARD ROBERTS

@richardjohn_rj

An initiative to get teens interested injournalism is underway at a Mfulenihigh school.

The initiative, a high school magazinewhich was launched a week ago at Man-zomthombo Senior Secondary school, wasstarted by a teacher hoping to cultivate fu-ture writers and photographers.Teacher Jonathan Mangwiro told Tyger-

Burger this week that he is happy with thefirst product – Volume 1.“But I am looking forward to the ones that

will follow.”Jonathan did the first project mostly by

himself but was assisted by some learners.

He said the objective is to get scholars com-pletely involved, to train them the art of writ-ing, photography and editing.Jonathan said he initiated a similar project

at a high school in Lwandle, near Strand in2013.He joined Manzomthombo Senior Second-

ary School in September 2013.Jonathan, who has no background in jour-

nalism, said the reason why he wanted aschool magazine atManzomthombo is so thatthe school can have its own identity.“It will help uplift the relationship between

the school, the parents and other stakehold-ers, as well as impart the knowledge of jour-nalism to the children who will hopefully beworking as journalists on the next edition.“Apart from marketing our school, the

magazine is also a way of looking for do-nors to help the school, where we lackfunds,” Jonathan said.He said with the establishment of a mag-

azine, the school – with an average passrate of 85% over the last five years – willbe able to show other schools that they arecapable of running a magazine.“It will also indicate that we are united,”

said Zimbabwean-born Jonathan. The first edition was centred around in-

troducing the teachers and the various ac-tivities which the school offers.Jonathan started writing in January.“The learners need time to learn more

about how it works. The enthusiasm isthere, but they lack the know-how.He plans to teach them how to conduct

interviews, improve their writing and showthem how to take photographs.A total of 1 700 copies of Volume 1 was

printed thanks to help from sponsors. He said he is optimistic about the future

of the magazine. “I wanted to do it when Iwas in my home country, Zimbabwe, but welacked the resources. When I came here Icapitalised on the resources that were at mydisposal.”School principal JohnMatiso said the fact

that they have started the magazine is amilestone achievement for the school. “Wewant it to be learner centred, where werecord all the things the learners have donefor the year,” Matiso said.He said they also want to set up a website

to help market the school.

dyhuis by hul bure langsaan ontstaan.

Werkloosheidsvlakke inSuid-Afrika is baie hoog. Ditbeteken gesinne sonder inkom-ste en armoede.Daar is ’n aantal oplossings

wat die probleem doeltreffendkan aanspreek.Suid-Afrikaners is oor

Verlig armoededeur onderwys

On Friday 18 July I returnedto a cold and wet Cape Townafter spending an enjoyableholiday with my family inFlorida, USA.On the way from the airport,

travelling along Mike PienaarBoulevard, we came across agroup of homeless people. It could have been 10 or 20

people sheltering under thebridge with little cover exceptfor bits of cardboard andplastic. What can be done to help

these people? Even my dogsleeps in a nice, warm bed.

’n Week gelede lui ’n bruinman – ligte vel, bleskop, effensoorgewig, dalk so in sy laat40’s en Engelssprekend – myvoordeurklokkie in Brackenfell-hoogte.Hy stel homself bekend as

Patrick Maleme, maar ek weet

Wees op die uitkykvir ondankbare man

nie of dit sy werklike naam isnie.Hy het ’n groot, swart harde-

bandboek by hom, waarin ’nmens kan opskryf as jy ’ndonasie wil maak. In die boekis ’n getikte brief wat “beves-tig” dat hy aangestel is omdonasies in te vorder virbehoeftiges – for the needy.Ek gee hom ’n groot sak klere

Wees bedag vir hierdie man.

Ongelukkig beteken sy ondank-bare optrede nou dat ek nie vanverdere hulp sal wees aanpersone wat by my aanklop nie.Ek sal voortaan uiters versigtigwees aan wie ek skenkingsdoen.

The murder of four-year-oldTaegrin Morris from ReigerPark, Johannesburg, wouldalmost certainly not havehappened if the traffic policingdemanded for many years bymy Road Safety Action Cam-paign (RSAC) had been inplace. In addition, if the other road

safety measures demandedsince 2005 by the RSAC were inplace, the country’s roadcarnage could have beenreduced by up to 90%.Those who failed to act

include the ANC government, all opposition political partiesand the public protector – all ofwhom were approached repeat-

edly but failed to act.Currently only the DA has

responded, but has not yetimplemented the requiredmeasures in the province orcity where it exercises politicalcontrol. The RSAC calls on all South

Africans to support action toend our road carnage. Thosewho wish to assist may call meon 082 098 9552.

SLICE OF LIFE

Monroe gesê het: “Well behaved womenrarely make history.” Sy’t ook opgemerk: “Women who wants

to be equal to men, lack ambition,” maargelukkig het vroue lankal dié les geleer.’n Anonieme vrou word op die internet

aangehaal: “Here’s to strong women: maywe know them, may we be them, may weraise them.” Sela.Albert Einstein sluit hierby aan: “A

woman who follows the crowd willusually not go further than the crowd. Awoman who walks alone, is likely to findherself in places no-one has been before.”Ongeag jou persoonlike mening, vroue

OscarWilde het dít verstaan: “Women aremeant to be loved, not to be understood.”En die laaste wyse woorde oor wat

If women didn’texist, all the money in the world wouldhave no meaning!”

HOOFARTIKEL

Waar is Parowse trots?

- SKE, Kraaifontein

Eerste River’s Marcha Marais has won theCape Town semifinal of this year’s Topstarscompetition.

Topstars set Marchaon a musical journeyLOUISA STEYL

@lounotes

An Eerste River Shoprite employee’s brav-ery in making her voice heard has earnedher a trophy.Marcha Marais, who works at Shoprite

Eerste River, has won the Cape Town leg ofthe Shoprite Group’s annual Topstars sing-ing competitionheld atRatanga Junction inJuly. The fruit and veg assistant says she heard

about the competition before, but never hadthe courage to enter until her previousbranch manager, Sadly Wileman, pushedher to enter this year’s competition.Marcha says she didn’t expect to even

make it to the semi-finals, let alone win.Not bad for a singer who has never en-

tered any singing competitions before. Be-fore the competition she had only ever sungat church and at work. The Topstars competition is held annual-

ly and is open to all Shoprite Group employ-ees (including employees of the Checkers,Usave, House & Home, OK Furniture, Liq-uorshop, Computicket, MediRite and Hun-gry Lion chains) across Africa. The competition aims to develop a sense

of value in doing a jobwell, by using singingperformance in a competition environ-ment.Throughout the competition, contestants

are exposed to encouragement, mentorshipand coaching, with the idea of developingstrong individualswhoexperiencepersonalgrowth and contribute to stronger teams. For her winning performance, Marcha

sangAdele’s “HidingmyHeart”. Adele hap-pens to be one of Marcha’s musical heroes, but she also enjoys listening toLionel Ritch-ie, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey.

“I’m an old school love song type of per-son,” she says.Marcha has no idea yet what she’ll sing

for the competition finals, which take placein October, but says: “My colleagues willsurely help me with that.”Although there was much excitement

when she returned to work, Marcha saysthings soon returned to normal.“I’m still the same old Marcha that talks

a lot, only now I sing much more at work.”Her confidence in her singing has grown

and she says after Topstars, she hopes “todo much more with what God has blessedme with”.“I just hopeanddreamthat this is a strong

stepping stone for my singing,” Marchasays.

V For more information about the Topstars competition, visit their Facebook page at Shoprite TOPstars, where readers can also stay up to date with information about the upcoming competition finals.

Ladies with high octane in their veinsand fast cars on their minds are goingto be accorded preferential treatment

during theWomen’sDayFestivalMeeting atKillarney on Saturday.Due to run in conjunction with the sixth

round of the exciting Power Series spon-sored byWingfieldMotors, ladies will be en-titled to free admission to the circuit. Theywill also be offered special privileges whenthey visit the Trackside Pub and Grill at theclubhouse.

And because it’s also a family event, ifthey bring the children there is the added ad-vantage of playground facilities, includingjumping castles outside the clubhouse forthe kids, who of course will also be entitledto free admission if they’re under 12.Then, for something completely different,

at least one lucky lady is going to be the re-cipient of a ticket for a “taxi ride” aroundthe circuit at racing speed in a McLarenMP12 sports coupedrivenbya formerKillar-ney sports car champion. Incidentally, thepotent MP12 is powered by a twin turbo, quad camV8 linked to a F1 type, seven speed

semi-automatic gearbox. Tested by the repu-table SportAutomagazine inFrance, an ear-lier model recorded a top speed of 343 km/h.Although the Power Series is expected to

provide its usual red hot racing excitement, with the season having now passed the half-way mark the categories are becoming evenmore closely contested. As far as individuals are concerned, one

of the highlights of the meeting is expectedto be a toughbattle betweenBellville’s SouthAfrican Engen Polo champion Kosie Wey-ers, who is going to be up against Durban-ville stock car hotshot Shaun Zurich in class

C of the Jive GTi Challenge. However, the Challenge is not a men only

event and acknowledged fast girls like And-rea Bate and Wendy Aukamp can be reliedon to make their presence felt.TheWomen’s Day Festival is an all day af-

The UCT/MRC Research Unit for ExerciseScience and Sports Medicine, based at theSports Science Institute in Newlands, is re-cruiting research volunteers for a study onthe psycho-physiological determinants ofpacing during prolonged endurance exer-cise.The study will investigate the physical

and mental factors which determine the en-durance performance and pacing strategiesin a 70km time trial; the inter-individual dif-ferences between “elite” and “sub-elite” cy-clists, and the intra-individual differencesbetween an individual time trial and a head-on-head competition. The study involves laboratory visits to de-

termine peak oxygen consumption, peakpower output and maximum heart rate, aswell as other anthropometric measure-ments.Research participants will be required to

perform a 70km familiarisation and threeself-paced, maximal 70km time-trials ontheir own bicycles on a virtual, profiled

course, including a head-on-head competi-tion against other matched cyclists.Research subjects shouldbemale sub-elite

or elite cyclists; between 18 and 45 years old;training for more than three years in a sys-tematic fashion, including high intensityand strength interval training; training twoto four or more than four times and 200-300km or more than 300km a week, respec-tively; able to ride a sub-three:thirty (3:15hto 3:30h) or a sub-three hours Cape Argus, respectively.Benefits of participating in the study in-

clude a comprehensive report of all anthro-pometric, performance and psychologicalmeasurements worth over R3 500; an oppor-tunity to learn about your physical andmen-tal strengths and weaknesses relevant forendurance performance; and to escape thewinter and train indoors on a virtual hillycourse.V To apply, email Dr Andreas Venhorst at an[email protected] or call 072 589 4040.Applications close on Sunday 10 August.
