AACL thanks all for agreat animal XmasThe response to the Animal An-ti-Cruelty League’s Christmasstocking appeal at the end of2012 was a big success, thanks topeople’s kind hearts.
Adoption staff of this animalwelfare organisation requestedthe public to donate toys, chewsand treats for the shelter dogsand cats, as part of a project.
“As the public holidays arelong and lonely for the animalsand many of them have neverhad anything nice in their lives,the idea was to give each animala stocking with a toy and a treat.The idea originated from our
adoptions officer Helen Sadler’sdaughter Caitlyn, after she wasinvolved in a Santa shoeboxproject at her school,” said Al-ma Schaap.
“We are delighted to reportthat the response was extremelypositive. Not only did we re-ceive the toys and treats askedfor, but many other items suchas food and collars and leads.Many groups of friends and col-leagues stood together to raisefunds and gather goods for us,”Alma and Helen said.
They thanked everyone, ex-pressing their heartfelt thanksfor contributions, big or small.
“This year Christmas wasspecial here at the AACL, asmany volunteers gathered andspent the morning with the ani-mals whilst giving them theirpresents,” Alma said.
The officers said there was apositive air of love, sharing andcaring and optimism at the shel-ter on Christmas morning.
“This is the greatest gift of allwe could ever give these ani-mals. To Caitlyn, well done, forbeing so young but still being anexample to us...” they said.

afgelope Trans Agulhas-opblaasboot-uitda-ging nie.Dít het hulle met die vyfdaguitdaging van
28 Desember tot 1 Januarie wéér bewys toehulle dit vir die negende keer gewen het.
Nie net het hulle hul klas (die gewysigdeklas) gewen nie, maar Tjaart en Dave is ookas algehele wenners aangewys.Tjaart, van Welgemoed, en David, van Ta-
ble View, het met dié oorwinning hul eie re-kord as die span wat dié moordende wed-vaart diemeeste keer gewenhet, vir die vier-de keer oortref. Hulle het op 28 Desember inPlettenbergbaai weggetrek en op 1 Januariedie wedvaart in die Strand voltooi.
Vanjaarwas die tiende TransAgulhas-uit-daging waaraan hulle saam deelgeneem het.Tjaart sê hulle het elke dag 08:00 begin en
party dae het hulle tot drie en ’n half ure ge-neem om daardie dag se been te voltooi.Die Trans Agulhas-uitdaging word as die
wêreld se moeilikste opblaasboot-uitdagingbeskou.“Ons het reeds al die rekords verbeter wat
daar in dié sport was,” sê Tjaart. Hy sê dievoordeelwat hy enDave het, is dat hulle bes-te vriende is. “Ons ken mekaar goed en hetvertroue in mekaar,” sê hy.Die wedvaart word beskryf as ’n vinnige,

Ongeveer 1000kmwordopdiewater afgelêoor die vyf dae en uithouvermoë is daarombaie belangrik, sê Tjaart. Hy beskryf diéwedvaart as een van die ergstes tot dusver,weens sterk wind en rowwe water.“Weens die erge wind het ons op die laaste
dag amper drie keer omgeslaan,” sê Tjaart.Hulle het egter kopgehou en is daarom
weer as wenners oor die eindstreep.Tjaart en Dave, wat bestempel word as le-
gendes van die Trans Agulhas-vaart, is tansbesig met ’n ontwikkelingsprogram ommense te help deur op te tree as mentors enafrigters. “Die lekkerste deel van die resiesis die uitdaging daarvan om dit te voltooi,”sê Tjaart. “Ek en David ry reeds so lanksaam dat ons die hele vaart vooraf beplan enons fokuspunt is altyd om te wen.”
