enants at the Grand Central Shopping

Centre in Eerste River are still dealing

with theaftermathof anarmedrobbery

at the centre nearly two weeks ago.

The KFC take-away situated on Van Rie-

beeckRoad (R102)was robbed by armedmen

on Saturday 12 April. They escaped with

cash and cellphones.

It is alleged the robbers damaged a telep-

hone cable situated near the centre before

striking the restaurant a problem that has

still not been repaired.

The guys who had cut the cable did it in

such a way that KFCs alarm will be discon-

nected. Itwas not cable theft, the cableswere

just cut in three places, strategically, cen-

tre manager Sarfaraas Mukuddem told Ty-

gerBurger.

As a result our Wi-Fi is down and our in-

ternet is down, we cannot use the phones,

he said.

Since the robbery several business have

been struggling to operate.

As a result of the problem, FNB, ABSA,

African Bank, Old Mutual and Capitec are

off-line.

They simply cannot work as all their bu-

sinesses depend on telephone signals, Sar-

faraas said.

Lost revenue

On Friday pay day for many people

they suffered a huge knock in business.

We have logged complaints with Telkom

since last Saturday morning. We thought it

was a technical issue at first.

We got a reference number and were told

that it would be fixed by Tuesday (22 April),

but Tuesday morning when we got to work

there was nothing, he explained.

The problem according to Telkom was

due to an issue at one of their off-site servers.

This is difficult for our business. My job

is to collect rental from everybody, make su-

re that tenants are okay, but I have no collec-

tion from any of the tenants. I cant get hold

of them,my contractors or suppliers, Sarfa-

raas said.

After fleeing Rwanda, AlbertMpazayabo found him-

self working as a parking attendant in Cape Town.

But he had bigger dreams.

Albert now holds a trio a tertiary qualifications:

a degree in Psychology, a postgraduate diploma in

HIV/AidsManagement and,most recently, received

his Masters degree.

Albert was one of 685 students in the Faculty of

Economic and Management Sciences at Stellen-

bosch University (SU) who were awarded their de-

grees on 1 April.

He already holds a Postgraduate Diploma in

HIV/AIDS Management from SU, a BPsych degree

from the University of the Western Cape and he is

currently doing his Postgraduate Diploma in Moni-

toring and Evaluation Methods, also at SU, Martin

Viljoen from the university stated.

The 51-year-old, who hails from Kigali, was a trai-

ning officer in productive health care for the Red

Cross in Rwanda, but when the war started in 1990,

he had to flee for his life, Martin said.

He ended up at a refugee camp in the DRC and

from there came to South Africa in 1997. Once in

South Africa, he started working as a security gu-

ard, then as a parking attendant at various shopping

centres in Cape Town.

These days, Albert, a father of three, is in charge

of placing other parking attendants at shopping cen-

tres in Brackenfell and Durbanville.

While this is not Alberts ideal job, he struggles

to find employment suited to his education.

Its tough being a foreigner. Im legal here, and

Im allowed to work in South Africa, but unfortuna-

tely most jobs are for South African citizens only,

says Albert.

Over the years I have often felt discouraged. I ha-

ve the skills that are needed, but the system does not

allow me to be useful or add value to those who are

in need. But despite the many setbacks I will never

give up. As long as Im still breathing, I have hope.

Albert says he plans on registering with the He-

alth Professional Council of South Africa, then set-

ting up a consultancy this year where he can work

as a community mental health worker finally put-

ting his BPsych degree to good use.

In the meantime hell continue with his studies

and next year plans on tackling a PhD in the field

of Monitoring and Evaluation. Ive decided that if

nobody wants to give me a job, I will create work

for myself. he says.

The fact that Im not inmymotherland forcesme

to do better.

Here I have no mom or dad or aunt or uncle to

help me out, so you realise quickly that in order to

succeed, you must do things for yourself. And this

is what Im doing here pushing myself. My hard

work must also serve as an inspiration to my child-

ren.

Two dancers are bringing the beat to Delft with

performances in the area.

Championship freestyle hip-hop dancer Nick

Floorkiller Matthee and Tonya September, who is

part of the 2LEGIT dance group in Delft, will be

performing as a duo in a hip-hop dance performan-

ce as part of the 1st Step Educare Community Show

at Roosendal High School on Saturday 3 May from

09:00 to 18:00.

Tonya, who is in matric at Florida High school in

Ravensmead, has always had a passion for dance,

starting at a very young age.

She has won awards with the Africa Ablaze

project and performed with the Ackermans dance

studio team.

She will also be performing with Nick at Alvon

Collisons annual Mothers Day Musical Show at the

City Hall on Saturday May 11.

The educare community show will feature a

variety of performing artists such as UltimateZ

Dance Crew and freestyle dance league MC Mo De

Beer the Entertainer. Entry to the show is free.

Nick Floorkiller is also giving three dance crews

the opportunity to appear with him on the Espresso

morning live show on May 29 this year. 2LEGIT

dance crew manager Melissa Matthee said youngs-

ters need opportunities to expose their talent

wherever they get the chance.

We as a community need to support our youth

and being an ex-dancer myself I want to give back

to the community, she said.

Nomsa Mosotho, die tienermeisie wat on-

langswreed vermoor en verkrag is, is Sater-

dag met n stampvol gemeenskapsaal in

Happy Valley finaal gegroet.

Nomsa (14) van Zwelethustraat, Happy

Valley is tweeweke gelede vermoor glo vir

moetie-doeleindes.

Haar tong en geslagsdele is uitgesny, haar

ledemate is gebreek en haar kop was erg ge-

skend.

Die moord het familielede, vriende en die

res van die gemeenskap geruk.

Sy was nog so rein, het Zoliswa Jevu,

n familielid Saterdag by haar begrafnis-

diens ges. Michelle Fani, n klasmaat en

vriendin, het ges: Nomsa was iemand vir

wie ons almal baie lief kon wees.

Nog n klasmaat het ges: Toe ek die ty-

ding van haar dood ontvang het, was dit vir

my bitter seer. Nomsa het altyd geglimlag.

Daar is Saterdag deur gemeenskaplede

van die agtergeblewe woonbuurt by die

stampvol diens gedigte aan Nomsa voorge-

lees en gesange aan haar opgedra.

Haar bedroefde ouers is deurgaans deur

familielede getroos.

Haar broer, Thulani Majola, kon nie die

trane keer toe hy die huldeblyk gelewer het

nie.

Apostel Cupido Alexander, leier van die

Surrender Pinkster-gemeente, het aan die

begin van sy preek ges die moord van die

tiener is n hartseersaak.

Dis n pyn waarmee ek bekend is en self

is. Nomsa was in ons kerk en sy was baie

vriendelik. Sy het altyd n glimlag op haar

A three courseMothers Day Lunch is being

planned for Sunday 11 May by the Commu-

nity Women Action (CWA).

Melodi Moses, administrator at CWA,

said proceeds from the event will go toward

the training and development of the organi-

sations Marimba Band.

The CWA partnered with the Rural Eng-

agement Program at Stellenbosch Universi-

ty in order to initiate a music academy at

the centre, said Melodi.

Music education is given to youth at risk

and children as an after school program, as

well as over weekends, to single young mo-

thers and school drop outs.

The lessons are facilitated by final year

student teachers at Stellenbosch University

who themselves come from poor disadvan-

taged rural areas, she said.

All lessons take placeunder the supervisi-

on of their lecturer Mrs P. Kierman.

These final year students struggle to pay

their tuition fees and therefore with the

amount paid by CWA for the facilitation, it

helps them, while students are also being

trained, Melodi said.

TheMothersDay lunch starts at 13:00 and

tickets cost R80 per person and R60 for seni-

or citizens.

There will be themarimba band and belly

dancers.

venster uitgeklouter om weer buitekant te

kom. Volgens hom is die slang sowat n me-

ter lank en bruin van kleur.

Voordat die slang in n houer gelaai is, is

daar gedemonstreer hoe hy reageer wan-

neer hy bedreig voel.

Dis ook maar goed die mense het die

slang nie gevang nie, want dit kon noodlot-

tig wees. Die volgende oggend het ek seker

gemaak daar is nie weer n slang nie, het

hy ges.

Een van sy bure se kinders het glo die

slang die vorige dag opgemerk, maar niks

daarvan gedink nie. Die kind het vir syma

ges daar is n slang, maar toe s sy dis se-

ker n wurm. Sy het later opgemerk dis n

slang, maar sy het niks ges nie.

BrettGlasby, bestuurdervandiewildeen-

heid van die Kaap van Goeie Hoop-DBV in

Plumstead, het bevestig dat die slang n

Kaapse kobra was. Kaapse kobras is dode-

lik giftig en die gif tas hoofsaaklik die senu-

weestelsel aan. Wanneer iemand een van

die soort slange tekom, moet hulle liewer

n veilige afstand handhaaf, die slang se be-

wegingsmonitor en n geregistreerde slang-

vanger kontak vir hulp.

Langverwagte rit oorsee om haar

dogter en kleinkinders te besoek, is

daarmee heen toe n pensioenaris

van Kuilsrivier van duisende rande beroof

Wilma Ross (60) en haar man, Henry (74),

van Suidstraat, Sarepta sou einde vanjaar

hul dogter en twee kleinkinders n byna

drie jaar sedert hulle laas bymekaar was

oorsee besoek. Die gesin bly in Auckland,

Nieu-Seeland.

Dit sou hul eerste besoek aan Nieu-See-

land gewees het, waarvoor die bejaarde eg-

paar meer as R25 000 gespaar het.

Altesame R20 000 is egter onlangs by Wil-

ma gesteel toe sy deur drie mans gekul is.

Een van die mans het hom as n speurder

voorgedoen, het sy by haar huis ges.

Dit was omstreeks 10:30 toe ek uit die

bank gestap het klerewinkel toe. Toe ek uit-

stap om my rekening by n ander winkel te

gaan betaal, toe kom daar n man en stamp

aan my.

Hy tel toe geld van die grond af op en bied

aan om dit met my te deel, maar ek s vir

hom ek stel nie daarin belang nie, het Wil-

ma ges.

Diemanhet haar glo aan die hand en daar-

na om die nek beetgekry.

Sy is kort daarna na n afgele parkeerter-

rein gelei waar n tweede man die speur-

der by hulle aangesluit het.

Die speurder het aanonsvertel dathulle

op kameras gesien hoe ons die geld opgetel

het.

Hy vra toe wie het die geld en toe verdui-

delik ek vir homwat gebeur het, hetWilma

ges.

Volgens haar wou die speurder haar en

die man opsluit.

Ek het hom gevra waarom hy dit wil

doen, ons is mos nie misdadigers nie.

Die speurder het haar en die vreemde

man na n bank in Belhar geneem. Hier is

Wilma gedwing om R20 000 uit haar bankre-

kening te trek.

Hy het ges ek moet vir die bank s dis

dringend.

Die speurder wou glo die geld in haar re-

kening vergelykmet dit wat hulle vroer die

oggend opgetel het.

Die teller het my gevra of daar enigie-

mand is wat my dwing om die geld te trek,

maar ek het vir haar ges ek kan nie nou

praat nie. Ek was te bang die mense is mos

nie sonder guns nie, het sy vertel.

Wilmahet dieR20 000 in n koevert gebre.

Hulle het daarna tot by die Wes-Kaapse

sportskool langs Nuwe Nooiensfonteinweg

gery, waar sy uit die voertuig gelaai is.

VolgensWilma is daar aan haar verduide-

lik dat hulle haar na die aanklagkantoor sou

neem. Ek het die mense in die omgewing

uitgevra,maar hulle het ges dis nie die aan-

klagkantoor nie. Dis n kollege.

Die diewe het daarna die hasepad gekies.

Die bruin koevert is ook omgeruil.

Hulle het my n koevert gegee, maar daar

was net papier in.

Ekwas in n toestand. Ek is baie teleurge-

steld.

Ek kon nie gepraat het toe ek by die bank

en by die polisiekantoor was nie. Eers agter-

na het ek gebreek, het sy ges.

lik dat as n polisiebeampte n persoon nader

aangaande n ondersoek, moet hy of sy hul-

self identifiseer deur n amptelike identi-

teitskaart van die polisie te toon.

As n polisiebeampte n saak teen jou on-

dersoek, moet die amptelike dossier wat

deur die polisie gebruik word, ook getoon

word.

Hyhet ges alle polisievoertuie is duidelik

gemerk.

As n persoon s hy of sy is n speurder,

sal die voertuig wat hulle gebruik met n

twee-rigtingradio toegerus wees, sowel as n

blou lig.

Moet nooit in n privaat voertuig klim as

jy nie seker is dit is n polisievoertuig of

Die lewe van n jong meisie is onlangs kort-

geknip toe n familievriend haar glo per on-

geluk met n handvuurwapen doodgeskiet

het.

Robin Seconna (19) van Faure is by haar

neef se huis in Hidalgostraat, Spandau in

Kleinvlei doodgeskiet waar sy Maandag 21

April oor die Paasnaweek gekuier het. Sy

is in die kop gewond.

Haar ma, Michelle Seconna, kon verlede

week nie haar gevoelens oor die dood van

haar dogter aan TygerBurger uitspreek nie.

Ek weet nie, is al wat sy in n sagte stem

kon s.

Ao. Annacletta Mothoalo, woordvoerder

van die Kleinvlei-polisie, het ges die ver-

dagte, n tienerseun en vriend van die oorle-

dene, het verlede Maandagoggend n vullis-

drom uit die straat verwyder toe hy n vuur-

wapen binne die drom opgemerk het. Hy het

die wapen by die huis ingeneem om vir sy

neef en di se meisie te wys toe die skoot af-

gegaan en Robin getref is.

Volgens die polisie is Robin in die linker-

oog getref.

Dit was n groot skok. Sy was n stil per-

soon, dis een ding wat ek van haar kan s.

Sy was al meisievriend onder ons groep

seuns. Sy was baie vriendelik, het Dillon

Dyers, n jarelange vriend van Robin, die

dag n die voorval aan TygerBurger ges.

Hy het ges almal is geskok oor haar dood.

Sy weergawe van die oggend se gebeure

stem ooreenmet dit wat in die polisie se ver-

slag saamgevat is.

Ek en Robin het saam grootgeword. Ek

ek nie by die huis was nie. Al wat ek weet,

Ek het net gehoor hy het die vullisdrom

ingebring, toe sien hy daar is n gun in die

vertel.

Ons het met haar (Robin) Eersterivier-

hospitaal toe gejaag.

Hy (die verdagte) het ges hy kon nie ge-

help het nie en soos ons hom ken, sou hy nie

so iets doen nie. Ons het almal saamgrootge-

word, het Dillon vertel.

Sowat 20 minute nadat hulle by die hospi-

taal opgedaag het, is Robin dood verklaar.

Michelle, wat as n au pair in Durbanville

werk en ten tye van die voorval by die werk

was, is kort daarna deur n familielid gekon-

tak.

Ek het gehoor dat sy nog by die hospitaal

geleef het; dat die dokters haar probeer by-

bringhet endat synogaandie pypegekoppel

was, het die ma vertel.

Haar dogter is Saterdag begrawe uit die

Pinkster-kerk in Hawston, waar sy grootge-

word en skool voltooi het.

Die 19-jarige verdagte, DorianManuel, het

Donderdag 24 April in die Blue Downs-land-

droshof verskyn en is op R1 000-borgtog vry-

gelaat.

Hy verskyn op 28 Julie weer in die hof.

Die voorval het Sondag 20 April plaasge-

vind.

neer toe hy deur die groepmans genader en

aangerand is. Dis nog onduidelik wat sy

dood veroorsaak het. Hy is die betrokke

aand hospitaal toe geneem en is daar brein-

dood verklaar. Hy het die volgende dag ge-

sterf, hetVanNiekerk ges. Hyhet ges die

speurders soeknounadriemans ongeveer

30 jaar oud wat hulle met die ondersoek

kan help. Hulle was met n wit Isuzu-bak-

kie op die toneel. Die registrasienommer is

egter onbekend, het Van Niekerk ges.

A sex worker on Old Faure Road near

Blue Downs became the latest victim of

an alleged brutal police attack.

The sex worker, who cannot be named,

was allegedly attacked by a member of

the Kleinvlei police station on Saturday

12 April.

The incident occurred at about 22:00

along the Old Faure Road.

Kleinvlei police station spokesperson

W/O Annacletta Mothoalo said the 52-ye-

ar-old victim was crying the following

day during the interview.

She explained to me that on Saturday

at about 22:30 she was standing near Bo-

sasa. She was on her way home when she

saw a white 4x4 bakkie without any mar-

ked signs of the police drive by,Mothoa-

lo said.

The vehicle was driven by a police offi-

cer.

She then said to me that he got out

with a golf stick and started to assault her

on her private parts. She told us she was

crying for a help.

The officer allegedly told her he did not

want to see her on the street anymore.

According to Mothoalo the victim then

ran to the nearby Bosasa Horizon Youth

Development Centre.

She ran to the security guard at Bosa-

sa, who saw everything.

The incident was also caught on CCTV

Mothoalo said.

The victim was taken to the Kleinvlei

police station, then to the Eerste River

hospital where she was admitted for high

bloodpressure and sugar levels then trea-

ted overnight, said Mothoalo.

The victim was asked to open a case.

The video footage was shown to me

and I saw everything.

I asked the manager to save it and to

not give it to anyone. I also spoke to three

security guards who witnessed it and

they explained to me exactly the way she

had described it to me, Motholao said.

The matter was reported to the Inde-

pendent Police Investigative Directorate

(IPID).

Moses Dlamini, national spokesperson

for IPID, said last week they can confirm

the matter had been reported to them.

The matter is a case of assault to do

grevious bodily harm.

The investigation is ongoing and no

arrests has beenmade yet,Dlamini said.

Twopeoplewere arrested recently for public

violence during an illegal protest in Polar

Park, Mfuleni.

Lieutenant colonel Fred Jacobs, acting

station commander at the Mfuleni Police

Station in Blue Downs, said the two were

amongst members of the community who

were participating in a toyi-toyi on Wednes-

day, 23 April.

The illegal service delivery protest, Ja-

cobs said, was held due to residents unhap-

piness at being relocated to the nearby New

Site area, futher up the road.

Theywere burning tyres and obstructing

contractors doing their work, Jacobs said.

He said members of the Public Order Poli-

ce were deployed to monitor the situation.

Two arrested during Polar Park protests

Majedien Norton made history in South Af-

rica, but for the wrong reasons. He was the

first person in the country to be found guilty

in a court of law for pirating a movie.

This, according to technology news site,

Broadband.com, as well as Son newspaper.

According to the tabloid, the 29-year-old

father of two from Epping pleaded guilty on

Thursday 17 April to illegally uploading the

gangster-themed movie Four Corners onto

the internet.

Because of Norton, the movie which re-

cently started showing in cinemas locally

was available to all and sundry since the end

of last year for as little asR5, the tabloid said,

causing themovie to sufferhuge losses at the

box office.

Helen Kuun of Indigenous Film Distribu-

tion, tasked with distributing the movie,

told the paper the boxoffice sufferedbecause

pirate copies were freely available before

the premire.

Norton pleaded guilty in the Bellville

Commercial CrimesCourt on charges of ille-

gal copyinganddistributionandwas senten-

ced to a three-year suspended sentence and

a R3000 fine, the tabloid said.

Norton, an employee at a mechanical

workshop, will be retrenched at the end of

the month. He said he got the Four Corners

CD from a friend who was selling it on a

street corner in Parow.

According to Son, he admits to having

uploaded theCD to the internet to sharewith

others, and admitted in his plea bargain that

he was naive and ignorant of the consequen-

ces financial loss to the producers and dis-

tributors.

Norton helped Giant Film Productions,

the producer, remove themovie from the in-

ternet and admitted to feeling regretful. He

apologised to the producers and the court.

The technology news site, Broad-

band.com, reported Nortons sentence as a

five-year suspended prison sentence and no

fine.

According to the site, technology lawyers

had said previously that the maximum pen-

alty for a repeat copyright offender was five

years in prison and/or a fine of up toR10 000.

First time offenders could look at three ye-

ars in jail and a fine of up to R5 000 for distri-

buting copyrighted content without the pro-

per license, Broadband.com reported.

The site quoted Four Corners director Ian

Gabriel as stating that while he is pleased

the film is reaching more people, in the long

run unchecked piracy will literally mean

the end of film-making.

Three people died when their shack burnt

down in Polar Park in Mfuleni.

Kleinvlei police spokesperson Annaclet-

ta Mothoalo said one of the family mem-

bers, a 30-year-old woman, woke up on the

morning of Saturday 20 April to light a

candle. The candle seemed to have caused

the fire after it had fallen over at about

06:50.

The woman woke up early to light the

candle but it collapsed and started the fire.

The lady then ran out to call for help.

One guy who ran into the house tried to

wake up the rest of the family but it was too

late, the place was burning too much alrea-

dy, Mothoalo said.

Only the 30-year-old woman managed to

escape.

Her family members Mawabo Quti (30),

Thobelani Qhaziyane (18), and Imeraan

Qhoziyane (2), died in the fire.

According to Mothoalo the surviving fa-

mily member and neighbour tried to extin-

guish the flames, to no avail.The Mfuleni

police has opened an inquest docket for in-

vestigation.Theo Layne, spokesperson for

city Fire and Rescue Services, said the fire

brigade received the emergency call at 07:11

and two fire engines, one rescuevehicle and

one water tanker responded to the fire.

speelplek. Nou is dit n vullis-

met glasstukke, ontlasting en

verlede jaar gesukkel het, nou uithaler-

rugby speel. En die Nieu-Seelanders ook

weer hul krag en diepte wys.

Wat die prentjie vir Suid-Afrikaanse

rugby nog minder rooskleurig maak, is

die volskaalse uittog van topspelers na

Europa en Japan.

Die wisselkoers is deesdae so swak dat

spelers vir kleingeld oorsee gaan speel,

maar tog dubbel soveel verdien as op die

SA rugbyvelde.

En niemand kan die spelers regtig

kwalik neem nie. n Rugbyloopbaan duur

nie vir ewig nie. Spelers kyk bloot na hul

toekoms. En in di geval praat geld baie

harder as lojaliteit teenoor hul plaaslike

span.

Daarom sal die SA rugbybase vinnig

koppe bymekaar moet sit om die uittog te

stuit. Hoe hulle dit gaan doen en waar

hulle die geld vandaan gaan kry, is

hrough his love of horses and hismusi-

cal talents, local singer Gerald Clark

has found a way to help others.

Touched by the work that groups like

Equitots in Durbanville are doing for child-

ren with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS),

Gerald and retailer Jade&Velvet started the

The FASt Forward Fund last year to financi-

ally help organisations working with FAS

children.

Their main focus is to afford young FAS

sufferers the chance toworkwithhorses and

ponies in a therapy environment.

FAS is the result ofmothers consuming al-

cohol during pregnancy. Their children of-

ten experience physical, behavioural, deve-

lopmental and cognitive difficulties.

But children receive physical and cogniti-

ve benefits from working with horses.

It was seeing these benefits that made Ge-

rald want to get involved.

The one little girl, Abigail, stood out for

me in particular, he recalls. Abigail was

born prematurely and it was expected she

wouldnt be able to walk due to FAS.

I was there during a session when she

was put on a horse andwithin a fewminutes

I could see her orientating herself and get-

ting interested in her surroundings.

Besides physical benefits like improved

balance, posture and muscle tone, working

withhorses also seemst tohelpwith attenti-

on span, reasoning skills, memory retention

and a host of other cognitive functions.
