Gemeenskaplede in Wesbank eis datdaar iets daadwerklik omtrent diemisdaadsituasie in dié geweldgeteis-

terde gebied gedoen word.Drie persone – van wie twee kinders, on-

Residents from Fountain Village, BlueDowns, where there has been several daysof unrest due an attempted illegal land inva-sion, say they are happy with the most re-cent resolution.

A group of community members from ne-arby Mfuleni recently threatened to moveonto a piece of land situated along Great Cir-cle Road, Fountain Village.

The group of backyard dwellers claimedthey cannot afford the rent at their currenthomes in Mfuleni as they are dependent onchild social grants, and would rather buildshacks on the open piece of land belongingto MSP Development.

MSP Development this week obtained aHigh Court order preventing the backyar-ders, mostly women, from moving onto their

property. The High Court order was printedand posted on a wooden sign board on thevacant land.

MSP spokesperson Sarah Bateman lastweek said they obtained an interim inter-dict on 23 June and had subsequently set upeight notice boards on the property, eachwith copies of the order in Xhosa, Afrikaansand English.

“The final order will be granted on Thurs-day 31 July, restraining the illegal land inva-ders from unlawfully occupying or invadingthe property to erect or attempt to erect anystructures.

“We are patrolling the property on a regu-lar basis and will call upon the police shouldthe conditions of the interdict not be adhe-red to,” Bateman said.

Community leader Maurette Dolman saidresidents were happy about the interdict.“They are happy to see steps are now being

taken.”She said since the sign boards have been

put up none of the Mfuleni residents havebeen back to the area.

Resident Elvera Alexander said said shewas happy there are plans for development.

The land is earmarked for the constructi-on of houses and apartments.

Whenyouvisit TheHaven shelter inBellvil-le you pass people living under the TienieMeyer Bypass bridge – a stretch knownaround these parts as “5 South Street”, or“The Suburbs”.You may even pass 22-year-old Xoliswa

Hendricks, akaSkollie, who liveshere. And,if her fellow street sleepers are not being toonoisy, you will find Skollie studying for herthird year Travel and Tourism exams.“For nowmyaddress is 5 South Street. We

live in ‘The Suburbs’,” Skollie, who isknown as Skollie because many people can-not pronounce her name, says. She was two years old when she ended up

at a children’s home. After she left, aged 18,she first lived inBellville central, and enrol-led at Boston College.“I used to live in a student residence in

Durban Road, but it cost R2 000 a month. That’s how I ended up on the streets,” shesays.Skollie tells uswhat her days are like. She

talks non-stop. And jokes a lot.“At 05:00 I get woken up. I guess a normal

young adult would be into the clubbing sce-ne and doing normal ‘young person stuff’.I’ll get to those things when I’m 30 and havemyself a bash with the money I’d have ear-ned by then,” she says. She lives on the streetswithher boyfriend

and says the SOS Children’s Village whereshe grew up, is her “family”.“My old orphanage knows where I live. I

get a monthly allowance and they pay mycollege fees.”Sowhat’s it like studying and living in the

open?“We’re busy with tests and exams. Living

outside really does not help to get a lot oflearningdone. But I’mdoing okay. Imaynotbe among the top of the top of class, but Ipass, hitting all the right marks at about60% or so.”Skollie says she’ll be finished studying in

March next year.“I never intended living on the streets for

long. I fully intend getting myself off thestreets permanently as soon as I’m done stu-dying and have got myself a job.“I’m going to a shelter in Cape Town soon

and I plan to get a part-time job for wee-kends. I’d like to be independent and startsaving.”She says she plans to get “into the scene”

at the V&A Waterfront.“That’s where the market and business is

at. I want to be in the heart of it all, wherethe ‘oomph’ is.”Speaking about life on the streets, she

says she wants to make people aware thatbeing homeless doesn’t mean life is over.“Living on the streets is not the worst

thing in the world.“Do something constructive, like me. I go

to class for three to six hours every day.Andstop thinking about drugs. Drugs are theworst thing. There is no sense in it and it’snot going to motivate you the next day.”

about visible and short-term improvementsthat change customers’ travel experience.“Improvements and upgrades are priori-

Xylophones beat the street bluesBenjamin Nkala shows his works in progress. He manufactures xylophones and makes miniaturetownships out of recycled material. PHOTOS: MICHELLE LINNERT

MICHELLE LINNERT@linnertmb

Benjamin Nkala is 44-years-old and a re-sident at The Haven night shelter.

He makes little township villagesfrom discarded material, but the prized pos-sessions from his creative hands are the xy-lophones he produces from wood off-cuts.

“Listen,” he says duringTygerBurger’s vi-sit to his makeshift workshop in the backy-ard of the shelter, and continues to play acheerful tune that underlines his proud smi-le.

He gets the wood from a timber manufac-turer in Cape Town. “I also make djembe

drums,” he says. “I play the piano and panpipes and I can readnotes.”He said he learntit all when he attended classes of the FrankPietersen Music School in Franschhoek.

Benjamin is originally from Gugulethuand has been making the musical instru-ments for about a year, after learning thetechniques at theRomanCatholic Church inGugulethu.

Proud handiworkHe doesn’t have regular clients yet, he

says, but in the meantime, the entrepreneuris builing up a store of items.

He carves and cuts the wood and finishesmaking the pieces, some a bit rudimentary

because of a lack of proper tools, he says, buthe’s proud of his handiwork nonetheless.

After the designs and cutting are done, hepaints each item in cheerful colours, andthen goes out and sells them to creches, playschools and primary schools.

His products cost anything from R150 toR2 000.

“Themorematerials I need, the higher theprice. It’s priced by size,” he says.

Benjamin also makes little township sce-nes similar to those sold by vendors to tou-rists in the Cape Town CBD.

He does all of this from recycled materialand creates the little villages so completely, you might be hard pressed not to look for a

lightswitch in one of the tiny cardboardshacks.

Carpenter and artist“In a previous lifetime Benjaminmust ha-

ve been a carpenter,” says Sharon Malan, manager of the Bellville shelter, says.

A carpenter and an artist, most likely.“His finished pieces are wonderful to look

at. He should have been a carpenter.”Benjamin says he would love to train kids

to play his instruments.“I love doing this and I would like to teach

children how to learn the skills so they canalso learn a little more about music and cul-ture,” he says.

Kragtige vuurwaens laat Jason sommer breed glimlagBRENDEN RUITER

’n Rit in ’n kragtige Lamborghi-

Eerste River residents took the law intotheir own hands earlier this weekwhen they attacked and assaulted an

alleged car thief. The alleged perpetrator was apparently

busy trying to break into a car parked at theGrand Central Shopping Centre situatedalong the R102 in Eerste River when he wasconfronted by a taxi guard working in thearea. The guard, Graham Neethling, told Ty-

gerBurgerhenoticed theman standing nextto an Isuzu bakkie.“We came out of Shoprite when a guy ca-

me running past us. I saw him and noticedhe was running to the passenger side of hisfather’s bakkie, where the perpetrator wasstanding. I ran towards the driver’s side,”Graham explained.Graham saw another car nearby and sus-

pected that the threemen inside the vehiclewere the suspected car thief’s accomplices.“We were careful because we did not

knowwhether they had guns. When the ow-ner’s son confronted him, they sped off.”At that point the car thief wanted to at-

tack the two men.Graham confronted the thief and got stab-

bed once in the left arm.“He did not say much except sorry when

we confronted him,” he said. After Graham got stabbed several onloo-

kers came closer. Some attacked the suspec-ted thief.Graham was taken the Kleinvlei day hos-

pital where he received four stitches to hiswound.“The thief was also taken to hospital after

the attack, after which he was taken to the

police station,” Graham said.According to Sarfaraaz Mukuddem, the

manager of the centre, between 25 and 30cars have been stolen at the shopping com-plex this year.He told TygerBurger the incident invol-

ving the taxi guard occurred on Tuesday atabout 12:45.“The taxi guard noticed that a man was

trying to steal the bakkie belonging to anunsuspecting shopper, which has been anunfortunate trend over the last fewmonths.“The guard approached the man and

askedwhyhewas trying to steal the bakkie. He was stabbed by the suspect and this cau-sed outrage in the community, and the manwas attacked,” Sarfaraaz said.He said the complex has sadly received

many heartbreaking stories, mostly frompensioners who had poured their life sa-vings into a vehicle, only to have it stolen. He said many of the people could not affordto insure their cars.“They live from hand to mouth.”“We have notified all stores and taxi

drivers, and their guards will be on the loo-kout. As a result we saved a car and broughtone perpetrator to justice,” he said.Cars targeted include oldermodels, most-

ly bakkies, which are not equipped withalarm systems, anti-hijacking or Gorilla ge-ar locks.Centre management is currently in dis-

cussion with Shoprite about upgrading thesecurity at the complex.Kleinvlei police Captain Gladys October

said the 42-year-old suspect is being chargedwith attempted murder and attempted cartheft. The suspect will appear in Blue Downs

Magistrate Court tomorrow Thursday).Acarwas stolenat 14:20 the followingday.

As of 1 June, the City of Cape Townno lon-ger charges a deposit for connecting tomunicipal services such as electricity, water and refuse removal from residenti-al users.“This shift is intended to improve the

city’s efficiency and reduce the admini-strative burden,” said citymaycomemberfor utility services, Ernest Sonnenberg.“This is in line with our commitment to

building a well-run city that maintains aproductive administration which prioriti-ses service delivery to all its residents,” hesaid.Homeowners will be credited with the

original deposit amount they paid at thetime of applying for the service connecti-on.Thiswill be reflected on theirmunicipal

accounts in July or August and, if the de-posit is greater than the account, the re-maining credit will roll over.

The city does not intend to make cashrepayments.Furthermore, only homeowners’ muni-

cipal accounts – not those of tenants – willbe credited as they have an immovable as-set the city can attach in the unfortunateevent of unpaid municipal debts.“The city’s pronouncement that resi-

dential users no longer have to pay a con-nection deposit of R600 and R800 respecti-vely forwater and electricitywill go a longway toward easing the cost of living for

our residents.“It is important to note, however, that

large power users and commercial custo-mers will still have to pay a deposit in or-der to secure a connection to these servi-ces,” said Sonnenberg.Additionally, pensioners and people

with disabilities will no longer have to ap-ply for a municipal rebate on an annualbasis. As a city striving to be more caring to

the most vulnerable, council has resolvedthese applications for rebates have to besubmitted only once every three years. This will significantly lessen the admini-strative burden on the approximately 26000 applicants, and the city. However, applicants who experience a

significant decrease or increase in theirhousehold income are still required to re-apply for a rebate on their municipal ac-counts in the applicable financial year.

City scraps connecting fees‘Residents no longer have topay a connection deposit of

R600 to R800. . .’– Ernest Sonnenberg

Thanks to the unskilledmanagement of Eskom, we allhave to suffer with electricityshortages and load shedding.

The public, mainly house-holds and small businesses, will be punished for themistakes Eskom managementmade for many years. Now weare short on power duringpeak hours.

I have a better way of savingelectricity countrywide andwouldn’t really hurt anybody.

All advertising lights fromall businesses which are closedduring peak hours should beswitched off – includingadvertising boards and signson buildings, as well as thelights which light the front ofcommercial and governmentbuildings.

In addition, only everysecond street light on nationalroads should be switched on –all vehicles have their ownheadlights. To make it safer, reduce the speed limit from120km/h to 75km/h on nationalroads.

This should only happenduring peak hours. If this planwas implemented, the plannedcountry-wide load sheddingwould be not necessary.

I took a taxi to Parow Hyper-market last Tuesday morning,as I always do, and ended uplosing my wallet with all mycards and some money in thetaxi. Both the driver and theguard were Rastafarians.

I only realised my wallet wasmissing once I arrived at workan hour later.

The next morning I asked therank master at Roosendalwhether he had heard of awallet found in a taxi. I wastold the wallet was, indeed, found and handed-in at theirhead office.

Of course I had to identify

the items in the wallet, buteverything was still intact and Igot it back two days later.

To my surprise the moneyand all my cards were still inthe wallet.

I really did not expect to getmy wallet back and I’m soimpressed there are still peoplein society who do the rightthing, despite not knowing me.

I am very grateful to thedriver and guard, so I will begiving them a reward.

Ek is gestremd, maar ek sit niein ’n rolstoel nie – vir mygestremde kaartjie moes ekdoktersertifikate voorlê (“Ge-stremdes se plekke misbruik”,TygerBurger, 25 Junie).

Moenie oordeel as jy nie weetnie.

Cara Gorlei fromMilnerton played a bigrole in SouthAfrica’s successful defen-ce of theirAll-AfricaChallengeTrophy

title at Muthaiga Golf Club in Kenya recent-ly.

For the 11th time since theAll-AfricaChal-lenge Trophy (AACT) launched in 1992, aSouth African women’s amateur team clai-med success in the continent’smost prestigi-ous biennial championship.

Cara Gorlei, Magda Kruger and MichaelaFletcher showed the same tenacity, commit-ment and determination as their predeces-sors to ensure the country’s successful titledefence at the Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairo-bi.

Fletcher, from KwaZulu-Natal, birdiedthree par-fives and the par-four on her wayto a closing three-under-par 68 to safeguard

the team’s six stroke overnight lead.

11Stroke victoryWestern Province’s Gorlei added an 80,

whileKruger fromGautengNorth signed fora non-counting 81.

Rounds of 146, 148 and 148 secured an 11stroke victory for SouthAfrica on awinningscore of 442.

Meanwhile Kenya held up under hugepressure from Tanzania to combine for a fi-nal round 151 to clinch the runner-up spoton 453.

Tanzania took third on 456 after postinga final round 150, while Zambia claimedfourth on 472, finishing six strokes ahead ofneighbouring Zimbabwe.

Maritzburg’s Fletcher also claimed the In-dividual Competition on seven-over-par 220after carding rounds of 79, 73 and 68, whichwasalso the lowest roundof the tournament.

Gorlei took second, finishing five strokesbehind her compatriot, while Kruger finis-hed seventh overall on 233.

Tough opponents“We are very proud of this team, who did

an exceptionally good job against some verytough opponents,” said Womens Golf SouthAfrica president Karen Olivant.

“The course was quite challenging, butthey showed a lot of grit and determinationand didn’t let the course deter them fromtheir goal to defend the title.

“Michaela and Cara both contributed twogreat rounds to boost our chances, andMag-da was the only player in the field over 54holes to birdie the tough par-three second.“I am very proud of their performance andthey were fantastic ambassadors for SouthAfrica and Womens Golf South Africa.”
