Members of the National Union of Metal- workers of South Africa (Numsa) have been on strike for nearly three weeks, which has cost some companies thousands of rands. Steve Scott, the sales manager at the wire products manufacturer, Allens Meshco in Wimbledon Road, Blackheath said that over 180 members of staff are currently on strike at the factory. “The strike has had a terrible impact on our business,” he says, with some customers even opting to collect their own stock. “We have told them that they do so at their own risk.” A domino effect He added that it is still difficult to say what the financial impact will be on the company, but that the strike will “obviously” have a impact. “We make about R15 million a month in turnover. The strike will cause a major financial loss.” Apart from the effect on factories, he pre- dicts that the strike will have a “domino ef- fect” on the entire industry. “It effects engineering companies, con- struction companies, civil and steelworks companies everything. . . it is a major pro- blem. “The entire building industry is going to come to a standstill, they can’t continue like this,” he says. However, the situation at Al- lens Meshco has been improved by em- ploying several line managers to operate the machinery. “We want the strike to finish. We are still going to feel the loss for a long time. “The sad thing about this is that some fac- tory workers want to work, they have car payments, school fees and bonds to pay.” The striking workers currently receive no wages or salaries. ‘Don’t want to strike’ “I feel for them,” Scott continued. Colcab, a factory near to Allens Meshco, has also been severely affected. Here they manufacture refrigerated dis- play cabinets. Keith Reeves, the director of human resources at Colcab, said that several of the company’s workers have said that they do not want to go on strike. “Some of them did not want to strike but said they have no choice. There has been intimidation, but nothing yet at Colcab,” he said. Reeves says that a truck was torched in the industrial area last Friday. “We absolutely want this strike to come to an end,” he affirmed. Around 240 of the 260 workers have downed tools. In terms of operations, the factory has co- me to a complete halt. “There is very little happening in terms of production. “Financially we do not know what the im- pact will be yet, but we already lost one job worth R120 000. “Fortunately most of our customers are un-derstanding, but if the strike continues we donot know what will happen,” said Reeves.

The company is being kept informed aboutthe negotiations through the employer’s re-presentative, the Steel and Engineering In-dustries Federation of Southern Africa (Seif-sa), Reeves said.

Numsa members demand a salary increaseof 10% with a list of additional demands. Em-ployers are offering between 8% and 10%.

“We normally have a three year agreement, but now the workers are demanding an incre-ase for one year and they want to come backfor another increase,” Reeves explained.

Vuyo Lufele, regional secretary for Numsa, said they will either settle for one year at 10%or a three year agreement for no less than10%.

“We want double digits,” Lufele said.He said negotiations between the union and

employers are still underway in Johannes-burg.

Ek is my eie baas,” hethet hy laggend gesê.

VersamelJannie versamel glas, sagte- en harde

plastiek. “So hou ek die plek skoon.”Jannie werk alleen en besit net ’n trek-

waentjie.

Jannie begin soggens vroeg.

Jannie is ‘ou hand’ as dit byherwinning in Wesbank kom

FOTO: RICHARD ROBERTS

The stories of local authors may soon be fill-ing the shelves of the Elsies River library.

The facility launched the My Story/MyCommunity/My Dreams project at the endof June to motivate youngsters to writetheir own stories.

Senior librarian Julian Schroeder couldnot contain his excitement as adults andmore than 40 learners from surroundingschools waited eagerly for the first work-shop to begin.

Leading them through these first steps ofputting pen to paper was dynamic authorand poet Diana Ferrus who shared some ofher own experiences before leading them in-to their first exercise.

Learners showed their creativity andshared a few words about someone specialin their lives. Some were shy and had to becoaxed by Ferrus, but it was clear the icewas broken.

“Do you see how your words, in just oneparagraph, can touch people?” an excitedFerrus asked. “Did you hear the differentstyles? Some were serious, some funny, butit is all your own words and your own sto-ries coming to life.”

There were smiles all around as a newbatch of writers started their creative jour-ney. “I never expected this response,” saysSchroeder. Now I am more excited than ev-er. This group will be meeting once a monthfor a year with various writers mentoringthem each month.

“The idea was to form this core group thatwill commit themselves to the project. Atthe end of the 12 months we want to publishtheir efforts.”

At the end of the session Ferrus could alsonot contain her excitement.

“The workshop was very informativearound the writing and reading abilities ofthe participants.

“They were very coherent and very clearon what they were writing and readingback. After this I don’t believe that our chil-dren are such poor readers and writers.

“Creative writing workshops could be-come an excellent tool through which learn-ers’ reading and writing skills are en-hanced. These kinds of opportunitiesshould be duly explored. I look forward tothe next meeting with the learners,” shesaid.V For further information about the project Schroeder can be contacted on 021 933 8767 or email juli[email protected].

Die drie wendyhuise was geleë agter ’n

steenhuis in Stratfordweg.

streeks 10:15 uitgebreek agter ’n steenhuislangs Stratfordweg.“Ek was in my wendy besig om ’n film te

kyk. .

Die bure langsaan het ookdie gesin probeer help.“Dit was so erg, ek wou in ’n stadium

moed opgee.“Die vensters het gebars, my televisiestel

“Ek was excited, dis wat my hart begeerhet. . .

Daar is telekemale by die

plek ingebreek.‘‘Die krane is verwyder; die vensters ge-

steel en die koper-handvatsels is weg. Jyraak so moedeloos.”

Hier beteken ‘BBC’ warm sop

Anneline Jacobs, stigter van die Children's World Soup Kitchen, staan by die bloedrooi BBC Newsskeepsvraghouer waar sy gereeld sop aaninwoners, maar veral kinders, in Kleinvlei uitdeel. FOTO: RICHARD ROBERTS

combestraat, Wesbank sê hy is raadop.

Jeffrey, ’n diabeet, moet Dinsdae by diedaghospitaal in Delft sy voorskrif gaan af-haal.

Drie klubsHaar netbalspan was vroeër

jare by die voormalige Oostenberg-netbal-unie geregistreer.

A Brackenfell man is challenging the cur-rent legislation allowing fathers only threedays paid family responsibilty leave whentheir baby is born.Hendri Terblanche (38), submitted a peti-

tion to theNationalCouncil of Provinces on3 July, asking that working men be given10 days paternity leave, Sapa reported to-day.He also approached everymember of par-

liament and urged them to draft a new Billto this affect.According to Terblanche, whose wife Gi-

selle gave birth to twins in November lastyear, three days family responsibility is notenough for parents who opt for caesareansection or in the event of other medicalcomplications. The twins were born three months pre-

maturely and spent 139 and 79 days respec-tively in hospital.“Everyone is quick to say fathers are not

involved enough with their children, butwith only three days’ paid family responsi-bility leave, they have a disadvantage fromthe start. The law needs to change to allowfathers to be involved,” he said.

SMSV It was shocking to see you turn the trag-ic death of an innocent child into a pleafor a library (TB, 25 June). The lack of alibrary did not kill that child, the great Ca-petonian pastime of jay-walking did.Rather call for better education on how tocross roads. Fine all parents who teachtheir children to run across the roads, which you see them do daily. Put up morespeed cameras for the escalating amountof speeding drivers. Some of us are sickof dicing with death every day. Carol,Sanddrift

Anoniem

V My work involves driving, so I listen tothe radio often. There are many topics onraising money for the poor, but not aboutcontraception. I am in the medical fieldand have noticed that well-off peoplehave children according to what they canafford. I am tired of the expectation offree health, schooling and housing. Thereality in this world is if you want it, youpay for it. Rape is the only answer I willaccept for an unplanned pregnancy. Chris, Table View

V It’s a disgrace how the system fails vul-nerable kids by turning them into vulnera-ble adults (Xoliswa Hendricks, TB, 2June). These children are also orphanedand abandoned by a system which is sup-posed to protect and uplift them, butwhich sets them up for failure. Yet hun-dreds of experienced social workersstruggle to find employment. It’s strange,as the need for their services is so monu-mental. How embarrassing! Anonymous

ADRIAN PHEIFFER

Magnificent form displayed by Fran-cis Carthers and Bellville driverGunter Drotschie in the Sports and

GT and the Fine Car categories, was thehighlight of Saturday’s fifth round of theWingfield Motors Power Series at Killarney.

Carruthers performed beautifully, as hisJuno SS3 swiftly dealt with a Porsche thathad been strengthened by top Gautenger An-drew Culbert and Durban’s Sun Moodley, who is also the Big Foot Express category’ssponsor. Blaauwberg’s Craig Jarvis andMoodley finished second and third in thefirst race, with Jarvis (again), and Culbertfilling the second positions.

Despite not setting the quickest qualifyingtime, Drotshie was also in a destructivemood in the Charl Electrical Eng. Fine Carevents. His bulky Chev Commodore GS fi-nished well ahead of Eric van der Merwe(Porsche 944 turbo) and Jaco Lambert (VWFox) in the first race, with a Porsche powe-red Lourens Bester and Van der Merwe fil-ling these positions in the second.

The Mutlu Battery Classic Car categoryprovided a platform for another double vic-tory, this time for veteran Richard Quixley. But the Datsun 240Z driver was overshado-wed by Trevor Momberg’s V6 Ford Capri inboth races, with Vance Kearney (Ford CapriPerana) taking third in the first race.

The second Classic shootout was red flag-ged when Johan Swart’s VW Scirocco cras-

hed into the barrier wall at the exit of theEngen corner. Luckily, with the results jud-ged from their positions on the final comple-ted lap, Swart was awarded third place.Overall class victories went to Dave Alha-deff (B: Alfa), Herman de Kock (C: Ford Es-cort), and Jan-Willem de la Port (D: Chev Ca-nAm).

The quality of Masters V8 events easilycompensated for their lack of quantity asCraig Jarvis and Franco Donadio fought itout in the last two events. After sharing firstand second places, they were followed acrossthe line by Richard Schreuder in the firstand Paolo Cavalieri in the second.

The Makita Supercar events were possi-bly even closer, as Steve McCarthy was nomore than a hair’s breadth ahead of Nick Ad-

cock when the flag came out at the endof their first race. They switched positions

in the final, with Adcock having just enoughof an advantage to clinch the overall verdict.

The third places were claimed by Brad Wa-deley and Gareth Easom, who was also ad-judged the overall winner of the Silver class, despite starting from the back of the grid af-ter missing the qualifying sessions. TheBronze class went to Carl Nel.

Sean le Riche’s 1.7 litre Formula Renaultwas unchallenged in the single seater For-mula Libre events. He was followed by theB and C class winners, Rassie Erasmus (For-mula Ford Ray) and Stephen Schemel (For-mula Vee Rhema), in both races.

The sixth round of the Power Series is dueto be held at Killarney on August 9.

WINGFIELD MOTOR POWER SERIES: ACTION AT KILLARNEY

Burning the tracks

Gareth Easom from Edgemead took a well deserved 3rd place in Supercars after starting at the back of the grid.

For the second year in succession WesternProvince beat the Blue Bulls 24-11 in theu-16 Coca-Cola Grant Khomo ‘unofficial’final rugby match that took place at theTshwane University of Technology today(Thursday).

“We are all very excited with the win,but I have to say it has been a stressful twodays,” said manager, Frikkie Coetzer.“Our game against the Golden Lions wasperhaps the hardest game of the tourna-ment as they are physically strong and ca-me at us with no respite. But we managedto beat them. Today’s game was perhapsnot as physically challenging, but the BlueBulls play a good tactical game. We had tochange our game plan to introduce a com-bination of both strength and tactics, which worked in our favour in the end.”

This win means that Western Provincehas completed a Coca-Cola Youth Rugby

Week treble following the Western Provin-ce u-13’s successfully defended their u-13Coca-Cola Craven Week title last week andthe u-18 Coca-Cola Academy Week that isfinishing in Worcester this week.

WP was first to get on the score sheet asflyhalf Damian Willemse scored a try inthe 17th minute. Gianni Lombard conver-ted to bring the lead against the 2013 GrantKhomo title holders 7-0.

Western Province wing Benjamin Mom-berg scored another try for Western Pro-vince that Gianni Lombard converted andthe score moved to 14-0 two minutes later.

The Blue Bulls got on the score sheetthrough a penalty from Ruan de Swardtand at the break WP led 14-3.

It looked like the Blue Bulls were co-ming back into the game when WesternProvince conceded a penalty that Ruan DeSwardt slotted to bring Western Provin-

ce’s lead down to eight points. However Western Province was tight on

defense and countered well off the BlueBulls kicks. Gianni Lombard and the Wes-tern Province backline were slick and flu-id in their play. Province constantly keptthe ball in their possession making it diffi-cult for the Bulls to attack.

Western Province 8th man delivered atry for his team in the 37th minute to ex-tend his teams lead to 15 points followedby Gianni Lombard’s conversion.

Western Province continued to press onrelentlessly and were awarded with a tryas Jade Fortune dotted down. The matchheated up as the Bulls’ Gerald Lowe wassin binned, and Damian Willemse for WPfollowed him. The Bulls were finally awar-ded a try as Luke Fortuin scored with oneminute left on the clock.

WP U16’s take the honours

Die volgende paar wedstryde (tuisspaneerste) vind eerskomende Saterdag plaas:Helderberg t Belhar, Brackenfell t Kraaifon-tein, Pniël Villagers t Goodwood, Hands &Heart t Sir Lowrians. – (Sarel Burger)
