Would you cling to the side of a vehicle for nearly half a kilometre while fighting armed robbers in an attempt to retrieve your cell phone? As strange as it may seem, this is exactly what one Kuils River resident did over the past weekend after being robbed. Jayde Collins (23), a resident from High- bury, was on his way to the train station at about 06:00 on Saturday when he noticed a vehicle driving up and down Nooiensfontein near Dana-rand. “The vehicle stopped and the driver called me over. He asked for directions. He said his cell phone battery had died. He asked if I could call his friend on his behalf. “They seemed like normal people,” Jayde said. Unaware of their intentions, Jayde took out his smart phone and dialled the number. As he punched in the number, the driver, de- scribed as man in his early thirties, grabbed the phone from Jayde’s hand. The vehicle sped off, but with Jayde grab- bing hold of the car’s frame. He clung to the side of the blue VW Volksie for nearly half a kilometre, he explained. “I shouted for help repeatedly, but there was no one in the area. “The driver handed my phone to a woman seated at the back of the vehicle. A third per- son was seated in the passenger’s seat.” Jayde started punching the driver while hanging onto the side of the moving car. “The woman then started hitting me. She also shouted to the driver to take out the gun which he used to threaten me,” Jayde fur- ther explained. While being dragged over the bridge cross- ing the railway with his feet dangling on the road, Jayde continued to fight his attackers. The driver also jumped a set of red traffic lights. Jayde punched the driver of the vehicle as well as the woman who started hitting him from the back. The driver, according to Jayde, then in- structed the unknown woman to hand back the cell phone. “The car pulled over and the woman threw my cell phone on the backseat. I grabbed it, after which they sped off,” the victim ex- plained. Jayde returned home and contacted the police. He found he was injured along his ribs and arm. Winston Davids, spokesperson for the Kuils River Community Police Forum, said it is the first time they’ve heard of attackers using this specific modus operandi. “Our neighbourhood watch normally pa- trols up until 06:00. We also patrol as far as the train station,” Winston said. The neighbourhood watch patrols be- tween 02:00 until 06:00, he explained. Davids warned residents not to resist but rather to step back and be safe. “Rather take down the vehicle’s registra- tion number than fight back. What is more important, your life or a cell phone? “Report the matter to the police and let them handle it further,” Winston said. Captain Isaac van Niekerk, police spokes- person, said the police are investigating the case. “We are going to compile an identikit to see if we can identify the suspects,” Van Ni- ekerk said. Anyone with information can contact the investigating officer, sergeant Edwin Bailey on 021 900 5500. Seeing double! The Highbury Primary School in Kuils River opened its doors this year and welcomed over 600 learners, 14 of whom are twins. The boys and girls – all dressed in white and black – posed for a photo on the first day of school. Illze Smith, school governing body secretary, said the school currently only accommodates Grade R to Grade 4 learners. The school is situated on the corner of Nooiensfontein Road and Belhar Drive.

hulle lyk, het my gevang.

diere waarna goed gekyk is.

Despite all efforts by the police to curbcrime in Kuils River, serious offenceshave increased over the past year.

Speaking at the Community Police Fo-rum’s (CPF) annual election recently, Colo-nel Dysin Jacobs, outgoing Kuils River sta-tion commander, said 3 312 arrests weremade over the past year relating to seriouscrimes, with a further 856 arrests relatingto less serious crimes.Serious crimes includemurder, sexual of-

fence, assault, robbery and burglaries.“If you look at the latest crime statistics,

you will note there has been an increase inmurders and house robberies.“That is as a result of emerging gangs, es-

pecially gangs such as the Gazas and Dix-ies,” Jacobs explained. These crimes are especially prevalent in

Sarepta and Kalkfontein. Jacobs said inmost of the arrests, the culprits were young-sters. One way the police have tried to ad-dress this is through Operation Combat, fo-cusing on gangsters and gang activity.Later in the evening a new chair and exec-

utive committee for the CPF were supposedto be elected. It was proposed the exiting committee re-

main unchanged with only the vacant posi-tion of public relations officer needing to befilled.Kalkfontein blockwatch committeemem-

ber Winston Davids was appointed in thisposition. The CPF to serve a five-year term are:The rest of the committee are Angela

Frans (vice-chair), Melanie Jacobs (secre-tary), Lizaan Mare (assistant secretary),Claude Julies (project co-ordinator) and Yv-onne Sipamla (treasurer).

Eskom Western Cape’s new loadshedding schedules, now in place, follows a four-day rotational pat-

tern. What thismeans is that over a four day

pattern, customers will be shed at diffe-rent time slots. “Load shedding shouldbe a fair and equal experience and ournew schedules will provide a balancebetween equity and predictability” indi-cates Alwie Lester, Eskom’s provincialhead.Eskom in the Western Cape has taken

into account the custo-mer feedback. “We ha-ve engaged regularlywith different seg-ments of our customerbase and asmuch as weare trying to avoid loadshedding, when it is im-plemented we want togive our customers a better experiencetherefore rotating the load fairly acrossall our customers” Lester explains. The previous load shedding schedules

were from06:00 to 22:00 in stage 1 and sta-ge 2. “Our new schedules are designed toaccommodate a 24-hour cycle in all threestages,” Lester clarifies. The schedules will allow customers to

experience load shedding at different ti-mes than before. The new schedules pro-vide a more frequent rotation and are tobe implemented in accordance with thedays of the month following a four daypattern. The schedules are also designedto ensure where the City of Cape Townand Eskom have shared networks, thecustomers will not experience different

load shedding time slots. How to interpret the new load shed-

ding schedules:1. Identify your area block number

using the alphabetical list of the Eskomsupply areas;2. Identify the load shedding stage that

has been declared;3. Look at the day of the month for the

relevant stage declared;4. Find your block number in the time

slot that you will be shed in;The new load shedding schedule and

the alphabetical Eskomsupply area list can befound in this week’snewspaper. Customersare requested to keepthese schedules and beprepared in the event ofload shedding. Custo-mers can also access the

Eskom website or Eskom Western Capewalk-in-centres for the schedules.Stages of load shedding:Stage 1 allows for up to 1000 MW of the

national load to be shed.Stage 2 allows for up to 2000 MW of the

national load to be shedStage 3a allows for up to 3000 MW of

the national load to be shed.Stage 3b allows for up to 4000 MW of

the national load to be shed.Customers should please treat all elec-

trical installations as live for the full du-ration of the load shedding period.V For more information go to http://loadshedding.eskom.co.za, follow them on Twitter (@Eskom_SA), go to the facebook page Eskom HldSOC Ltd or contact 08600 37566.

CHEVON BOOYSEN@chevonbooysen

Proposed regulations to clamp down on“illegal modifications and illegal

racers” has met with strong opposi-tion.Thenewregulation to be added to theTraf-

fic Regulations Act, made public two weeksago, seeks to “impose stricter fines on illegalracers and cars that are modified”, says amedia release.Meanwhile City of Cape Town safety and

security mayco member JP Smith said histeam will impose stricter fines on driversfound guilty of taking part in illegal races. However, he said media reports law en-

forcement will “target drivers of modifiedvehicles” are “worryingly inaccurate”.“For the record, the City’s Traffic Service

is mandated to enforce the provisions of theNational Road Traffic Act No. 93 of 1996.[This is] a national piece of legislationwhichstates anymodification of or tamperingwitha vehicle’s safety design renders the vehicleunroadworthyunless it is done by themanu-facturer ora registeredbodybuilder,” Smithsays.

Driving in fearBut car enthusiasts and the after-market

industry want clarity on what this regula-tion will mean in practical terms.Cape TownCar Enthusiasts (CTCE) repre-

sentative Kersten Greybe says confusionhas many motorists driving in fear.“People are scared to even just drive their

cars to the corner shops since the announce-ment. Nobody knowswhat is happening andno answers have been given and we need toknow exactly what this means for the CapeTown car culture,” she says. She agrees it is good to clamp down on ille-

gal racing as it “endangers the car culture

in the province”. “Clamping down on illegalracers I can understand as they are a hazardon the road. But to paint everybody with thesame brush is horribly unfair.”She adds that manymotorists take part in

events at Killarney Raceway, but immedi-

ately after events “we find ourselves in aroadblock, just outside the venue. What isthe point of practising your sport legally butyou’re victimised anyway?”She started an online petition to prevent

the proposed regulation being passed and

has so far gathered 20 000 signatures.“We want our voices to be heard. For too

long we have been underdogs and we havenow decided to educate ourselves with re-gard to the proposed [regulation]. We aren’tartists with canvasses so our masterpiecesare our cars,” she says.Ghost Squad officers have, meanwhile,

been fining drivers of modified vehicles andeven confiscating their car licence discs.Registered tuner shops say they fear the

after-market industry will be under threatshould the bylaw impose stricter laws onanybody with a modified vehicle.Yaseen Abrahams, of CPi Performance In-

novation Cape Town, says they are “highlyconcerned” over the outlawing of carmodifi-cations.

Legal modification“CPi only engages in legal modification of

cars and ourwork is of the highest standard.Outlawing modifications will have a hugeimpact on the industry. Surely if individualsabide by the law it is their right to modifytheir cars as they wish,” Abrahams says.“CPi acknowledges that many people en-

gage in illegal street racing, but we promoteand support the legal usage of modifiedcars.”The regulations are to be in effect inApril,

but Smith adds the enactment of the regula-tions is the responsibility of the provincialtransport division. “TheCity has lobbied forthe inclusion of impoundment of vehicleswhere owners are caught participating in il-legal street races, steep vehicle release feesto act as a further deterrent, stricter penal-ties for motorists (including prison) espe-cially those who try to evade the law whenconfronted, and suitable penalties for spec-tators at illegal street races to be includedin the Act,” says Smith, who adds fitmentsby registered after-market tuners are legal.

Modification clampdown feared

Proposed new regulations to stamp out illegal racing have been met with disbelief by themodified motoring fraternity. Many claim it will be difficult to enforce and say they’re beingvictimised because of the assumption that modified cars are used in illegal races. PHOTO: CHEVONBOOYSEN

Ná ses toegewyde jare as hoof van dieKuilsrivier-polisiekantoor sê die sta-siebevelvoerder, kol. Dysin Jacobs,

vandeesweek vaarwel aan sy kollegas by diékantoor.Jacobs, ’n gebore Bolander, het Maandag

as hoof van die polisie inRavensmead oorge-neem,waarhy soortgelykedissipline envor-dering wil implementeer.Hoewel hy sy span by Kuilsrivier gaan

“Hoe-

VerskilDis sywerkservaringwat hy in dié gebie-

Dinge gaan natuurlik nie oornag beterraak nie; dis ’n proses.”

OpvolgerOor sy opvolger by die Kuilsrivier-polisie-

kantoor is Jacobsheeltemal tevrede.

Knitwits bitten by the blanket bugMAGRIET THERON

@magrietron

“Mymother is 91 anddespite arthri-tis, she started knitting blanketsfor the 67 Blankets for Madiba

drive and it has given her a new lease on life, says Terry Milne from Fish Hoek. “Shecould not be here today, because she is sofrail, she’ll get blown over by the wind.”Terry spoke toTygerBurger at the celebra-

tion of 67 Blankets for Madiba’s first birth-day in the Company Gardens on 27 January.Since the launch of the cause in Johannes-burg last year, it has gained support fromacross theworld andhas over 2 000Facebookmembers who call themselves Knitwits, andseveral groups in Cape Town who regularlymeet to make blankets for the poor.Youdonot need to be awoman to be aKnit-

wit.

Household industryJohan Beetge from Plattekloof says he be-

came so attached to the crocheted blanket heworked on for months last year, he slept un-der it the night before he donated it to thecause.“My husband took up looming and he

made an enormous blanket. He is a perfec-tionist and has become proficient in thequalities of wool, so 67 Blankets has becomea whole industry in our household,” saysTerry Milne.Terry is also involved with a group of

women in Masiphumelele in Kommetjiewho knit squares, and she teaches childrenat primary schools to loom and knit, as partof their life skills curriculum. These squaresare then sewn together by volunteers tomake blankets. The original 67 Blankets’ aimwas to make

67 blankets to hand over to charity on Man-delaDay in 2014. They exceeded that numberby hundreds. Now they are taking the challenge to the

next level, because, saysBryoniDawson, theCape Town ambassador, people will always

need blankets.“We are on deadline. We need 21 000 blan-

kets from all around South Africa to placeat the feet of Madiba’s statue at the UnionBuildings on 21 April, to celebrate our 21years of democracy,” says Carolyn Steyn, the driving force behind the group.“Even inmates in Zonderwater and Diep-

sloot prisons are knitting,” says Bryoni. She says this drive has grown into a huge

outpouring of goodwill.“We are a group of six women who get to-

gether twice a month to consolidate, bringdonations, share out and knit. We socialiseand talk about other projectswewant to do,”says Cathy Dippnall.

“Most of the women in our group did notknow each other before 67 Blankets was es-tablished and now we have become closefriends.

Thirsty work“There are a lot of very enthusiastic peo-

ple. There are groups across all the suburbswho meet every week, get sponsorship anddeliver.”Charmaine Damstra from Plumstead is

working on her eighth blanket this year.“Our group meet every last Wednesday of

the month from 19:00 to late, or until all the

champagne is finished. We get very thirsty,it’s hard work you know,” she says with awink.“This project is like a bug that bit us and

we cannot get rid of it,” says Florence Reddyfrom Grassy Park.“Housework and cooking has become sec-

ondary. I take my crocheting everywhere Igo, and if I can’t take it along, I won’t go,”she says.V Visit the 67 Blankets for Madiba Facebook pageto become involved or donate wool. The organisationdoes not have a bank account and does not acceptmoney as donations.

Pupils discover theycan grow vegetables

“Look mom, I can grow a tomatoplant!” Thanks to the Cangro pro-ject, sponsored by N1 City Mall

and TygerBurger, each Grade 3 learner atparticipating local primary schools inGoodwood got a tiny tomato plant lastweek. For the next eight weeks, they have to

look after it. And then, when the time co-mes, they will have a show and tell at theschool and the “Tomato Grower of the Ye-ar”will be crowned at the shopping centre.Foundedby siblings Jody andDianeKra-

mer, Cangro is based on the “magic” of theupside down can – a trick discovered al-most by accident with a tomato growing intheir back garden. By exploring the con-cept further and asking “how can we growtomatoes in a fun and practical way”, thesiblings were able to transform 30 000 cansfound in a dump into a thriving educatio-nal concern – one that has become a valua-ble teaching aid to replace the old-fashio-ned “cotton wool and bean” method.Last year N1 City Mall, in association

withTygerBurger, brought theCangropro-ject to life for local learners. The initiativewas the first of its kind to run in the Wes-tern Cape, and was met with huge successand enthusiasm from teachers, parentsand children alike. This year learners from Goodwood Park

Primary School, Koos Sadie Primary andRuyterwacht Primary are participating inthe project.Currently in progress, the eight-week

initiative started at the end of January andwill run until April. To mark the start of the project, the chil-

dren were first treated to a special Cangroplay, written and directed by Deon Opper-man and performed by Tessa Dalton. Fromthere the planting sessions began, with

each child being asked to water, feed andcare for their very own tomato plant – theultimate aim being to grow the biggestplant of all.Enthusiasm for the project so far has

been infectious, and while learning hasbeen taking place at the same time, the newapproach to teaching elements such as theimportance of soil, bugs, photosynthesis, pollination and seed dispersal has madetheGrade 3 curriculumcomealive inanewand excitingway. As the project continues, the children will continue to learn as well, coming to understand the essential valueof sustainability, responsibility, respect, and caring. For now the children’s plants are being

left to grow, but between 27 March to 12April the 30 finalists and their plants willbe showcased in the centre with public vo-tes determining the overall winners. This activity will coincide with the N1

City Mall Kids Expo, between 27 to 29March, which will incorporate Cangroworkshops for the public.

noot gesit sodat mense kon dink diehele pak is geld.

twee dae tevore ingeloop het, my by’n winkel herken.

PLEASE NOTEEskom Western Cape will be implementing new load shedding schedules from 1 February 2015. The new schedules will follow a four

day rotational pattern. What this means is that over a four day pattern, customers will be shed in different time slots. The new schedules will provide a balance between equity and predictability.

Customers should please treat all electrical installations as live for the full duration of the load shedding period.

Interpreting the new load shedding schedules:1. Identify your area block number using the alphabetical list of the Eskom supply areas.2. Identify the load shedding stage.3. Look at the day of the month for the relevant stage declared.4. Find your block number in the time slot that you will be shed in.

Interactive communication will become a re-ality in the Elsies River area later this year.

Construction on the R6 million InteractiveCommunity Access Network (ICAN) centreat the Elsies River multi-purpose facility inHalt Road is progressing well with a propo-sed launch next month (March).

The project is a partnership between thedepartment of economic development andtourism, the City of Cape Town, the operatorand the University of the Western Cape.

Te centre will have open spaces for lear-ning, innovation and knowledge production. It will be a space for the entire community.

Local entrepreneurs can grow their busi-ness ideas, learners will have a study resour-ce space and residents will be able to furthertheir training as well.

The centre has zones to cater for the entirecommunity, including:

. ICAN Learn will support community le-

arning initiatives. It is a training centre in-corporated within the ICAN centre, whichwill be shared between school learners andthe rest of the community.

. ICAN Study is specifically equipped tosupport learners and students. It is intendedto be a quiet, study oriented space that is su-pervised.

. ICAN Create is a space for communityinnovation, local knowledge creation and en-trepreneurship.

. ICAN Play is a gaming lab. Research in-dicates the correct type of video games andinteractive media can have a positive impacton self-efficacy.

. ICAN Community Commercial ServicesZone, which is the heart of the centre. It pro-vides the support and shared services to theother zones.

More information will be made availablecloser to the opening.

ICAN centre opens soon Teaching children to swim isa skill that can ensure theirsafety in the water.

Swimming is more thana sport, it be a life saverGARY VAN DYK

While Western Province Aquatics arepromoting swimming as a sport, they’re also making people aware

that it is a vital life skill in all areas.Briane Reynolds, president of Western

Province Aquatics, says swimming can bea healthy pastime but it is more importantin relation to safety.

“We are on a mission to make peopleaware of the importance of safety in water,at pools or beaches,” he said.

“Many parents are becoming aware ofthis and take steps to get their childrenswimming, but we want to highlight a fewvital steps one should take when enrollingyour child into a swimming programme.”

He said there are many swim schoolsavailable, but not all are certified to the cor-rect standards, or registered to WesternProvince Aquatics. “We as the custodiansof the sport are vigilant with regards to therequirements one needs in order to openlearn-to-swim programmes.

A few very important criteria needed forswim teachers/coaches to be registered toWP Aquatics/Swim South Africa are:

. Level 1 first aid certificate;

. Official police clearance;

. Swim South Africa and WP certifica-tion (completed learn-to-swim instructor’scourse);

. Proof of annual registration to WPA/Swimming SA; and

. The learn-to-swim school be registeredto WPA.

“Many swim schools don’t comply withthe necessary safety and qualification re-quirements,” continued Reynolds.

“It is therefore imperative for all parentsto request the instructor to present proof ofcurrent registration to WP Aquatics.

“Parents can also check the WesternProvince website for registered learn-to-swim instructors and coaches.

“Over the years, WPA has been trying togrow and develop the sport and take swim-ming to all our communities.

“We have some fantastic projects in placeto teach and educate coaches within thecommunities and to put safe, fun swim pro-grammes in place.

“There are numerous initiatives, like theporta pool school project. These are porta-ble pools that are set up at various schoollocations, in order to get children educatedon the importance of this vital life skill.

“Regular water safety talks are also heldand we encourage the importance of gettingpeople water safe.

“Through Aquatics, we will continue tostrive to better our communities in theWestern Cape where making every child aswimmer is our number one priority.”V For more information about the organisation goto www.wpaquatics.org.

A cultural sports day was held in Wesbank recently which highlighted a holiday project initiated by community leader Edith van Wyk.Substance abuse prevention was one of the key topics, said organisers. The event, which was held at the Wesbank High School on 17January, was attended by several youngsters from the area ranging between three and 18yearsold. Raelene Arendse, chairperson of theportfolio committee: social development and early childhood development, said their directorate was involved in providing information aboutsubstance abuse prevention. The safety and security directorate was also involved in the day’s activities and presented a dog show on theday.

Do you want to be involved in scouting? The 1st Belhar Scout Group offers girls

and boys between the ages of 7 and 17 thechance to develop leadership skills.Lillian Layman from the group says chil-

dren get the chance to participate in out-door adventures such as camping and hik-ing, learn to work in groups, acquire skillssuch as first aid, cooking, map reading, cre-ate lifelong friendships, discover and ex-plore new places, plants, animals, culturesand technologies.Scouting is an NGO and raises funds

through fund-raising initiatives and benev-olent donors. A monthly fee is chargedwhich goes towards membership fees andrunning costs.“Our adult leaders are highly skilled vol-

unteers in the community and their objec-tive is to mentor our youth in life skills andlife,” she continued.“We urgently need assistant Pack leaders

for our young cubs. A scouting backgroundwould be beneficial. “We are calling all ex-scouts and ex-leaders to team up with us.Our youth need you!”

There is also an appeal for donations ofcamping or hiking equipment such as tents, compasses, rope, sleeping bags, water bot-tles, boots, etc. All donations are most wel-come.Weekly meetings, during school terms,

With lyrics about Cape Town suburbsand the use of colloquial terms, in-ternational artist Charl “Babyboy”

Pilwan is celebrating his hometown in hisnew single.Raised in Retreat, Babyboy has spent the

past 13 years in China and America, wherehe works as a performer and promoter. He’s worked with some of the industry’s

biggest international acts, such as ChrisBrown,Nelly andNe-Yo, andachieved consi-derable success with his ownmusic in coun-tries like England andPortugal. But now thesinger is ready to come home.Babyboy plans to do this by promoting his

music locally and creating a fan base, whichwill allow him to work in Cape Town again. He will be visiting the Mother City to pro-

mote his new single, Apple Green Datsunwhich features Afrikaans rapper Die Bar-heid and saxophonist Donveno Prins.“I wrote Apple Green Datsun, in just one

eveningabroadwhen Iwas incrediblyhome-sick,” Babyboy explains. He says he knew he wanted “a full horn

section with a vibrant Kaapse Klopse soundthat evoked and brought to life good memo-ries of Cape Town”.Babyboy met Die Barheid when they per-

formed on the CTV show, Hip Hop Avenue. As soon as they finished filming he took DieBarheid to the studio to let him listen to thenew music he has been working on.“The moment Die Barheid heard Apple

GreenDatsun, we both knew it was the trackI would feature him on.”Babyboy rates Donveno as a consummate

professional and says he immediately un-derstood his vision.

“Onceyouhave experienced thebrillianceof Donveno you understand how he is inspi-red by the music and he came up with hissax solo on Apple Green Datsun in the mo-ment.“Although Babyboy has already performed

Apple Green Datsun at the V&A WaterfrontAmphitheatre inDecember, the songwill getits official launch this weekend.Babyboy will be at the African Drum Café

inElsies River on Saturday. Tickets cost R40at the door, but can also be booked on 079785 2233.He’ll also be at Mzoli’s from 15:00 on Sun-

day 8 February. Entrance is free as long asyou purchase meat at the venue. The song will be available on iTunes fans

canalso requestAppleGreenDatsunon theirfavourite local radio stations. Since the songis for Cape Town, he also plans to distributethe single at taxi ranks and busy intersecti-ons after the launch.V Visit www.tygerburger.co.za to listen to AppleGreen Datsun.

Jazz academy gives youth ataste of what music can doGARY VAN DYK

@gvdcapejazz

“If music be the food of love....”While Shakespeare may have wanted it to

just be “love” an initiative in Bonteheuwelis giving some young people much morewith a discovery of love for music, and thepotential their talent has.The Jazz Yard Academy may only have

started in 2013 but they’ve already built areputation for dynamic performances. On Sunday they were invited to perform

at the SomethingGoodSunday at Inside onthe Greens lounge at the driving range inWynberg and the crowd did not want to letthem go home.“They were only supposed to do one set,”

says Chris Petersen, who heads the teach-ing. “After they did the one set the ownerbegged me to have them do some more. Peo-ple just fell in love with them.”The academy was the dream of Gino Oliv-

er who wanted to use music as a catalyst toshow youth in the area that they can live ful-

filling lives if they have positive dreams.“Through music they can realise their po-

tential,” he says.“The also learn the value and rewards of

discipline, hard work and to express them-selves through creativity.“Now they realise all that hard work was

worth it when people enjoy their performan-ces.”Chris agrees, adding they also realised

how exhilarating it can be on a stage.“Thismusic has liberated somanyof them

who were shy at first.”OnSaturdayyouwill be able to catch them

in action when they host an open day at theBonteheuwel Multi-purpose Centre in Jak-kalsvlei Road from 15:00.“Problem is that we do not have enough

experienced teachers to help regularly. There are many children who want to bepart of us but we are struggling.“My hope is there are retired musicians

who can help us make a difference.”V For more information about the project or openday call Judith on 079 493 1233.

– (Sarel Burger).

Bosman has 50 year karate bash

Hennie Bosman has made many special appearances in Japan during major tournaments.

STEHAN SCHOEMAN

Fifty years ago, when Hennie Bosmanattended his first karate class he hadno idea what a remarkable impact this

ancient martial art would have on his life. The first evening he walked into the dojo

where everyone was fighting and shouting, retains its freshness in his memory.

In 1975 he opened his first dojo in LoopStreet, Cape Town while still in the SA Po-lice Service, and in 1978, after resigningfrom the police, he opened dojos in Durban-ville, Brackenfell, Kuils River andWelgemoed.

Bosman, who is the chairman of Kyok-ushin-kan Africa and owner of theWelgemoed Kyokushin-kan dojo with 38branches in the northern suburbs, livesand breathes karate.

Being the African chairman is not aneasy job. He has over 30 000 karateka in 10countries under his guidance. Poverty, lack of training facilities, funds and equip-ment, as well as challenges in respect oftravelling, make things very difficult.

Celebrations“We have big things planned for this

year to celebrate my 50 years of involve-ment in karate. We are going to have an in-ternational tournament, an internationalcamp, a gala dinner and host a golf day.Kancho Royama, our international chair-man, will visit South Africa in May to at-tend the international camp in Stellen-bosch and an international tournament.

“I have met so many remarkable peoplein life and whether they are still doing ka-rate or not, I invite everyone to get in touchand be part of the celebrations with me andmy family, as well as my students.

“I calculated that I must have taughtabout 15 000 students during the 40 yearsof teaching in the northern suburbs. It willbe so good to see people that I shared a lotof time with on the dojo floor,” said Bos-

man.It was his mother who sent him to karate

classes. “She wanted me to learn how to de-fend myself as I was bullied at school. Thatdecision set the tone for the rest of my life.”

He has represented South Africa in tradi-tional karate, kickboxing and Kyokushin.

“It was difficult times as we had to sneakinto overseas countries and sometimestake part in secret. I also represented Alge-ria and Botswana in Japan as South Africawas not allowed to compete. In Dublin, Ire-land we had a tournament in a snookerroom in a hotel,” recalls Bosman.

One of his highlights were when he wonthe world senior karate championships inOsaka, Japan in 2001. “I was so proud!”

Movie stars“Karate has opened so many doors for

me. I’ve played in numerous movies locallyand internationally, working with starslike Clint Eastwood, Wesley Snipes, MattDamon and Morgan Freeman to name afew. In March this year, the film Momen-tumwill be released, where I had the privi-lege to torture the James Bond girl, OlgaKurylenko. Unfortunately I mostly have

the part of the bad guy. I have also travelledextensively and seen a lot of this beautifulplanet.”

Bosman has also worked with the othersportsmen including the Sharks rugbyteam where he assist them with new ideason tackling and defence.

“I also had the honour of working withthe Springboks for one session in CapeTown under Peter De Villiers and assistedthe Springboks Sevens under Paul Treu.”

Bosman has always had the interests ofhis karateka at heart and at any given timehas students in Japan on a training course.

Romano Mento and Matthys Laubscherare currently undergoing an intense three-year training course and when they returnnext year, will share their knowledge withthe junior students.

Big plansShihan Hennie has big plans for his jun-

ior karateka this year. He invited hisfriend Sensei Chinone from Japan, whowill visit the Welgemoed dojo in Februaryto help prepare the karateka for the upcom-ing provincial and national champion-ships.

Bosman will also attend the annual in-structors’ camp in Japan from 6-8 March. The top instructors in the world meet hereto further their knowledge.

“I have dedicated my life to karate andit gives me great satisfaction see the talentthe youngsters show in class. It gives mea sense of relief to see that the future of ka-rate is alive and well,” said Bosman.

Kyokushin now has separate recogni-tion from traditional karate at Sascoc andhe is the representative for Africa in theKyokushin World Union. They are in theprocess of including Kyokushin in the 2024Olympic Games.

All his old karateka and new studentsare invited to join the celebrations. Phonethe dojo on 021 913 1600 or join the facebookgroup www.facebook.com/kyokushinsa.
