Two female bank staff members, as well as a male security guard, were held up last week Wednesday shortly after 08:30 when the bank was robbed of about R500 000. This incident, one detective told Tyger- Burger, is the first since August 2005 when the FNB in Adderley Street in Cape Town and the Absa in Bellville were attacked. The FNB attack resulted in a hostage situation, the detective said. Forced inside The organised crime unit is investigating last week’s attack at Standard Bank. An eyewitness, Winston Absolon who works as a car guard across the road from the bank, explained how he saw two men walking down an alley – each carrying a black bag supposedly filled with the cash they stole. “There were no screams, that is why we were not aware of the robbery. It was quiet,” he said. Absolon said two members of the public who were also inside the bank at the time claimed to have been robbed. “Their wallets and cell-phones, every- thing was stolen,” Absolon said. Van Niekerk said the attackers also took the CCTV camera footage before making their escape. A case of armed robbery is being investi- gated. “However, we can confirm that there we noinjuries to staff. Thenecessary trauma coun-selling had been arranged for our employeeswho were impacted by this incident,” Lin-strom said. The incident also sparked a huge concern

amongst residents who took to social mediato express their dismay. One user on TygerBurger’s Facebook pro-

file, Melany Rodrigues said: “Honestly, thepolice must do something or bring the armyin. (It’s) getting out of hand.“Oh Lord, have mercy on us all,” Bernice

Leggett, wrote. The local Community Policing Forum

(CPF) said they too are concerned.Alton Payne, CPF chair, said their con-

cern is for innocent people who always endup getting hurt, “Someone’s mother, bro-

ther, father or sister.”He said: “We are very concerned as there

is an increase in the crime atmalls and shop-ping complexes, not just in Kuils River butacross the country.“I thinkwe as a community, together with

the police, must be vigilant and become acti-ve in the fight against crime.”As a deterrent, Payne recommend that

CCTV cameras be installed across the CBD.“This has been discussed in numerous

meetings but the cost implications were justtoo huge.“However I do think with the spike in cri-

me in the area, we as residents, the businessfraternity and the councillors should takehands and install these cameras which willassist us to help capture the perpetrators,”Payne said.

Disaster RiskManagementteams takeseniors through anevacuationexercise at one ofthe homesinvolved in theproject.

Steps to avert disastertaken at old age homesElderly residents at a number of facilitiesowned and operated by the Cape Peninsu-la Organisation for the Aged (CPOA) arebeing prepared for emergency situations,as part of an emergency planning projectbeing run in collaboration with the city’sDisaster Risk Management Centre. The project was inspired by the United

Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduc-tion campaign around the role of olderpeople in disaster risk reduction. As a result, Disaster RiskManagement

has committed to helping the CPOA withemergency planning and evacuation pro-cedures for old-age homes and retirementvillages.“Effective emergency management is

difficult in any situation, and becomeseven more challenging when issues likemobility and frailty are brought into theequation,” said city’s mayco member forsafety and security, JP Smith.“It is therefore paramount that we help

ensure our facilities for older people arenot only up to code in terms of, for exam-ple, fire safety, but also that both residentsand staff are aware of what to do shouldthere be a need to evacuate the premises.”For the first phase of the project, exer-

ciseswere conducted at Lilyhaven inBon-teheuwel; Avondrust Court, Rondebosch;Arcadia Place, Observatory; Erica Place,Athlone; Fernbridge, Diep River; andConstantia Place, Constantia.A similar project was launched in col-

laboration with the Helderberg Society

for the Aged on Thursday 6 Novemberwhere residents of Huis Vonke in Somer-setWest participated in an evacuation ex-ercise.

Further exercises are scheduled at fourother facilities in the Helderberg laterthis month.“Many people think that disaster risk

management begins when a disaster hap-pens, but the reality is that much of ourworkhappensbehind the sceneswith edu-

cation and awareness,” said Smith.“This includes safety drills and exercis-

es to ensure that our staff, but also resi-dents, are as prepared as possible in theevent of an incident. There are many people for whom emer-

gency drills are nothingmore thanhalf anhour away from their desks, but the valueof knowing what to do when the situationcalls for it cannot be understated – and thesame applies for our elderly residentswho are even more vulnerable.”

The possibility that gang violence mightnever be eliminated, only reduced, was adisturbing comment by the DA’s MireilleWenger in a public debate about gangs anddrugs and the effects it has on society.

The debate was held at the Western Capelegislature last week, where MPLs from op-position parties had the opportunity tohighlight their concerns and criticisms.

Wenger said she believes specialisedunits are necessary to help fight gangs.

“Crime and violence is demoralising, vic-tims of violence suffer injuries, sometimesthey lose their lives.

“Often those who live in such areas aredeprived of life’s simple opportunities,”Wenger said.

The ACDP’s Ferlon Christians made asimilar statement earlier that day. He saidchildren who are brought up in poor areaslike Elsies River experience gang violenceon a daily basis.

“In fact, boys and girls say nothing goodcan come fromHanover Park and Bokmaki-erie,” Christians said.

He said absent parents was also an issue.“We cannot blame government and the

police, we need to take responsibility.“When I spoke to a 10-year-old boy he said

he cannot get out of the gang, that he hasto kill as a gang member,” Christians said.

DanPlato,Minister of Community Safety, concurred. “With communities at the cen-

tre, weneed thehelp fromthepolice andoth-er spheres of government but most impor-tantly from parents as well.

“Speaker, active parenthood ismorevalu-able than any government or police inter-vention.Theparents’ role inbeing rolemod-els for their children and ensuring theirchildren know the difference between rightand wrong, is an essential part of a child’supbringing.

“We have to prevent our children gettinginvolved in gang related activities. I call onparents to workwith us in this regard,” Pla-to pleaded.

He said a whole-of-society approach isneeded to tackle gangs.

“We will not be successful in breakingdown this culture if we try to do this eachas an individual, a political party, a sphereof government, a department or as the po-lice in isolation from one another.”

In her speech, ANC MPL Pat Lekker saidvery little is being done to fight the problem.

“The honourable community safety MECDan Plato massively failed the people of theWestern Cape... he and his governmentwork to destroy it and discredit our crimi-nal justice system,” Lekker said.

NEW ADDRESS:

After 25 years in the heart of Bellville, andthousands of happy customers, Paint City ismoving to Durban Road.

Paint City opened its doors on November27, 1989 as the brain child of the late Vincentvan der Spuy. It grew from a family businessto a leader in the home improvement sector. Now, after almost three decades, it is movingto new premises.

Debbie van der Spuy, co-owner with GavinKinnear, says they are moving to a safer envi-ronment for customer’s sake.

“When we first started Bellville was a crimefree area and as a new kid on the home impro-vement scene, business boomed. Things havechanged and the time has come for us tomovein order to improve our customers’ experien-ce,” says van der Spuy.

At the new premises on 158 and 160 DurbanRoad, customers will have access to safe par-king.

“It will be a new and pleasant shopping ex-perience. It is important for us to replicateand even improve the level of service we have

been known for throughout the years. Ourloyal customers will knowwe would not havethis longevity if we were not leaders in ourfield in thenorthern suburbs. We strive topro-vide all clients with an upmarket and friendlyshopping and home improvement experience,by ensuring our staff are knowledgeable andare always willing to go the extra mile,” saysvan der Spy.

While traditional goods like decorativepaints, customised colour matching and tin-ting, plumbing and sanitaryware, as well assmall hardware will be sold, there will also bea range of new services. “

We will now offer tinting and supply of au-tomotive paints and abrasives, as well as bo-ards, cabinetry and associated products.Whatthis means is that we will design, manufactu-re, supply and install built-in cupboards andkitchens.” She invites everyone to have a lookat the new store.

“There will be special prices on selectedgoods as we welcome customers at our newhome.”

The city takes training for the seasonal fire-fighters very seriously in order to preparethem for any eventuality during the summerseason.

Last week 40 trainees from Belhar andMitchells Plain went into the field to com-plete some aspects of their practical train-ing. These ‘hot-shot’ crews will be primarilyused to combat vegetation fires and will bedeployed as from Monday 24 November.

The specialised training focused on as-pects of “wild land firefighting” and thepractical use of specific equipment.

The training is aimed at demonstrating

how to fight veld and vegetation fires, whilelearning how to make fire breaks.

The City of Cape Town’s Fire and RescueService is in the process of beefing up its re-sources for summer when high tempera-tures and strong winds promote the spreadof fires. During the previous summer sea-son, firefighters attended to more than 5 000structural and vegetation fires.V The City appeals to the public to please report anyfires to its Public Emergency Communication Centreon 107 from a landline or 021 480 7700 from a cellphone. Damaged fire hydrants can be reported to0860 103 089.

Altesame 12mense is daardeur ge-raak.

week herbou. Maandagmiddag was daarnog gate gegrawe vir die vyfde struktuur.JoleneMali (33), nog ’n inwoner, moet ooknou van vooraf begin.“Ek en my man was besig om televisie tekyk.

Despite never having sailed any of theseven seas, a group of Eerste River res-idents working as volunteers at one of

the world’s greatest ocean races, say the ex-perience alone is memorable. The group of about ten from the area have

for the past two weeks – during the CapeTown stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race –looked after the crews, boats and curiousvisitors who frequent the pop-up centres lo-cated at the V&A Waterfront. The experience as a whole, most say, is

wonderful.Speaking to TygerBurger on Friday, Dev-

on Park-resident Annalene Hollaway, whoalsoworks as a volunteer at the Eerste RiverMulti Purpose Centre, said she enjoys eachmoment.

Friendly people“We meet a lot of people here, take them

to the boat so that they can get an experienceof what it is like for the sailors,” Hollawaysaid.Sheworks at theCross Section – an exhibi-

tion area where people can climb onto ayacht to see how the craft operates. What she enjoys most, Hollaway said, is

meeting lots of friendly people.

“The fact that I met Ian Walker and hisparents, that was the highlight,” she added.Walker is the skipper of Team Abu Dhabi,

who arrived first in the first leg of the racefrom Alicante to Cape Town.Benn Carey, volunteer coordinator in the

Volvo Ocean Race’s operational team, saidbeing a coordinator is the best job.“The friendship and the bond that you

make over here in 19 days – slightly less inSpain and slightly more in Abu Dhabi – isthat you’re meeting the volunteers that are

giving up their time for this race, withoutthemthiswouldnothappen,” the formervol-unteer from London, England, said.He said he understandswhat it means giv-

ing up one’s time.“I have had a fantastic experience here

with these volunteers.“It is humbling, it is a privilege for me to

meet people who come from the backgroundthat these people come from,” he said.Juleen van Rooyen from Electric City,

who also helps out at the exhibition centre,

said she learned a lot while volunteering.“This was a learning experience for me.

I never had an interest in sailing, but nowI can actually explain to people how the boatworks and I am able to answer their ques-tions. This was a nice experience.“It is my first time that I am involved in

this project, but it is absolutely amazing,”van Rooyen said.

New experiencesEdward Davids from Stratford Green said

he was also involved in the project in 2012.“Volunteering is one of the city’smain pri-

orities, and provides and opportunity to ex-perience new things in the city,” he said.“By volunteering, it also leads to employ-

ment. There is not just one event the cityhosts, there are many, and there is a lot onecan learn,” said Davids, who works as an at-tendant at the Kleinvlei Community Hall.Mawabo Siwela fromWesbank helped out

at thedome, anareawhere theydisplaymov-ies about the race.“I enjoy it. I love the whole event. I met

most of the participants, they are veryfriendly and it is fun speaking to them.“One can network a lot. We also learn

some of the foreign languages,” he said smil-ing.Tonight the fleet will set sail for Abu

Dhabi, the second leg of the race.

Following the recent warning issuedagainst a spate of car hijacking andhouse robberies in the Kleinvlei area,

the police this week said they are still con-cerned about the growing prevalence ofthese crimes.Warrant officer Annacletta Mothoalo,

spokesperson for the Kleinvlei police, saidthis week a number of car hijacking andhouse robberies have been reported to thepolice over the last few months.“As from August, Kleinvlei police have

experienced a lot of reports regarding carhijacking and house robberies,” she said.According to the police, most of the house

robberies, occurred at the newly developedBelladonna Estate situated along AlbertPhilander Road, Blue Downs, near themag-istrate’s court.“We have experienced that they use one

particular modus operandi where they re-

move the whole frame of the window in or-der to gain access.”She said people need to be careful who

they ask to clean their yards and homes.“Often the people who are involved in thesehouse robberies are peoplewhoknowexact-ly the entranceandexit to yourhouse,”Mot-hoalo said. She said cases of housebreakinghave also

been reported at the Our Pride HousingProject.“Here theybreak in at thehousewhile the

owners are work.”Mothoalo said to address this, community

members need to work hand and hand withpolice through street committees and theCPF.“They need to establish street commit-

tees, neighbourhoodwatches and also be ac-tive in the CPF,” she said. She encouraged people to attend sector fo-

rum meetings with the sector commandersof thepolice stationwhere crimesoccurringin the areas are normally discussed.

Hijacking and houserobbery on increase

day 3 December. The meeting takes placeat theMfuleni police station’s boardroom. At last Thursday’s meeting only six of

the registered 22 community organisati-ons attended. As per the constitution themeeting had

Instead of having a big party, a police coloneldecided to celebrate his 50th birthday bysharing goodwill.

Colonel Henry Hubbard, a member of theKuils River police cluster, decided that thisyear he wants to do things differently andrather than having fancy celebrations, hewould plough the money he had into some-thing worth much more. This resulted in thepurchase of a Wendy house which he donatedto an Eerste River teenager and her three sib-lings on Friday last week.

Eerste River High matriculant Nadine vanNiekerk (18) – the recipient – said they appre-ciate the gesture.

“I turned 50 recently and I said to myself,we are so blessed but others are not as fortu-nate,” said Henry.

“Instead of spending money on a good lifeand fancy party I decided to take the moneyand help someone,” he said.

While going through the crime reports, henoticed the case regarding Nadine who re-ported her mother for child abandonment.

“I said to myself, this is not right. The sys-tem is failing them.”

He then organised with his friends andfamily to all make a contribution.

“We then erected the wendy house,” hesaid.

The newly built structure now stands nextto the old iron shack in which the teen andher two twin brothers, Keenan and Kel (12)and sister, Cassidy (7) have been living in forthe past eight months.

Nadine have been looking after her sib-lings during that time since their motherwalked out.

“These kids are relying on sandwiches atschool,” Henry said.

Apart from his help, one teacher also con-tributed R200 to the children each month.

“But that is not enough to feed a hungrymind,” Henry added.

Nadine, who is currently writing her finalmatric exams, said she is thankful.

“Not a lot of people would do this,” she ex-plained.

Nadine wanted to study next year, but saidshe might have to go work to maintain thehousehold.

Henry said his family will assist them withapplying for a social grant.V Anyone who wants to assist the family further cancontact Henry on 079 894 1373.

RICHARD ROBERTS@richardjohn_rj

Jymaak jouself dood.”

@linnertmb

In sy 27 jaar by dié kantoor het Paulsesewe stasiebevelvoerders sien kom engaan.

Des-tyds is jongmanne direk námatriek polisietoe.

Diepaartjie is in Januarie 28 jaar getroud.

“Sy het by my uitgekom om ’n saak tekom maak. Sy is een dag jonger as ek!”lag hy. “Ek het geweet ons is vir mekaarbestem.” Hy vertel hulle was binne sesmaande getroud.

Wanneer Paulse oor Kayla begin vertel, skiet sy oë vol trane.Dié pragkind vanhomwas amper dood weens ’n hartkwaal.

“Dis my planne. Die konsep-projek isreeds by ’n fabriek. ”

SLICE OF LIFE

JazzrigtingCobus het musiek by

die Universiteit vanKaapstad studeer– in ’njazz-rigting. “Ek het nie’n gunsteling-genre vanmusiek nie. Ek glo uitverskillende genres leeren ontwikkel jy jou eiestyl.

Kaartjies vir Klassieke Kersfees is beskik-baar by www.cultivaria.com of by Compu-ticket.

Durbies valvas teen UKSAREL BURGER

Edgemead (100/6) is in dieselfde bootjie
