Hul enigste struikelblok is ’n naam.

Swiftreg Company Registrations is verle-

Ander kwessies sluit in vermoedelike on-

steun net nóg ’n droom sal bly.Past.

“Hier is spinasie, kool, wortels, boontjiesen tamaties.

Survivor thanks family rootsMICHELLE LINNERT

@linnertmb

He’s a stockbroker, an adventurerand now a millionaire, and it allstarted on the humble streets of Bel-

har.Graham Jenneker (29) and his family

moved to Bellville’s Stellenridge 15 yearsago, but this self-confessed “mall rat” whowon the hit reality tv show Survivor:Champions on Sunday, has never forgot-ten his roots.

“I haven’t given post-Survivor muchthought, but I would love to do somethingto give back. I mean, I grew up in Belharfor a long time. I have seen a lot of badthings happen around me. It would be niceto change the community somehow,” Gra-ham told TygerBurger on Friday.

We caught up with him and fellow Topthree contestants Buhle Madlala and SivuXabanisa before they took to the stage atthe TygerValley shopping centre for theValley of the Stars concert.

Graham, who shares a name with his fa-ther and has two elder brothers, is deeplygrounded.

“I was fortunate enough to grow up ina household that, regardless of what wasgoing on around us, had a lot of love,” hesays.

“My father and mother taught us correc-tly. No matter what situation we were in,we always had a good foundation.”

Graham says he understands how diffi-cult it can be for people from his old neckof the woods who may not have the samesolid base.

“Maybe it’s a lot more difficult for peo-ple who don’t have this foundation – it ma-kes things a lot more challenging. But re-gardless of the situation, parents need toplay their role.”

Graham said children also needed to“step up”, especially if they are not fortu-nate enough to have parents. “I know, it’s

easier said than done, but it’s all up towhat they do with their education.”

He wants to give youngsters hope.“The main thing is that if you have the

right attitude and mindset, you can over-come any situation you’re in.

“You just need to start from within, tomake a decision to uplift your life. Try notto wait for someone else to change your li-fe, and don’t blame your surroundings.Yes, that might be a factor, but you are thechange you want to see,” he says.

Graham started his new job when he gotback from the island, and is planning onmarrying long term girlfriend ErinArendse after he was proclaimed winneron Sunday.

He says the experience has changedhim, but he his feet remain planted firmlyon terra firma.

“I think people recognise me now to takea picture,” he said, but added that untilFriday, there had been no fan fun yet. Allthat may change after Sunday’s announce-ment, though.

But it won’t change him. “I just feel likea normal guy.”

Fellow top three contestants Buhle andSivu say they also learnt a lot from the 28-day island experience.

“I learnt so much more about me, thingsthat, one, I took for granted, or two, didn’treally acknowledge, or three, never reallyknew existed,” said Buhle.

Sivu said on Friday all he’d wish to dowith the money is see his younger siblingsthrough a good and solid education.

“My studies have always been a challen-ge and I will not stop until I reach the PhDlevel,” the Astrophysics student said.

I’ve been a resident of Black-heath for more than 30 years. Iuse public transport to getaround, but I feel unsafe lately. There is currently a problem

with taxi drivers, believed to befrom Macassar, taking over thearea. They have no respect forresidents. They have created a rank on

Apparently two ofthe association’s former drivershave broken away from theorganisation and recruited thenew drivers. They have thedepartment’s support. We can no longer take any

Join the driveto provideblanketsWith winter fast approaching, one cannothelp but spare a thought for the people –and animals – left to brave the gruellingelements. It was a simple thought like this that

saw the birth of South Africa’s annualTwitter Blanket Drive (#TBD2014).Based on the premise that if every

South African on Twitter donated oneblanket, there would be far less peoplefighting the cold, a simple tweet started anational initiative. Now, every year a group of volunteers

collect blankets which are then donatedto organisations that redistribute them tothose in need.TygerBurger has joined the initiative

and will be acting as a “drop-off” pointuntil the end of the drive on Wednesday28 May.With the icy temperatures and rainy

autumn we’ve had, there’s no telling howcold this year’s winter might get. A warmblanket could make a world of differenceto someone who doesn’t have much else.On the subject of blankets, polar fleece

blankets are preferred, as they are moredurable and dry quicker in wet condi-tions, but any donations are welcome.Blankets collected this year will be

officially handed over at the Protea Fireand Ice hotel in the CBD on Thursday 29May and everyone is welcome to attend, provided you bring a blanket of course.More information about the blanket

drive and how to help spread somewarmth this winter is available onwww.tygerburger.co.za.

SMSV Regarding the water pressure (TBSMSs, 14 May). You should set the pres-sure at the meter. Don’t set the pressuretoo high as all the pressure is now resi-dent in the house and can cause leaks anda disaster can ensue. Turn it down. Pearson, Brooklyn

V Regarding “Building resumes” (TB, 14May). The owner is taking the City of CapeTown for a fool. Except for the wall whichwas fixed, there is no talk of the construc-tion recommencing. I think Cheryl Waltersshould get into her car and come to seefor herself. It will also allow her to knowmore about the situation. Gerrit F.

Years of hard work paid off for GrandWestCSI bursary fund recipients when they we-re honoured at a gala dinner.

The 34 recipients come from all over theprovince and completed studies in thefields of mathematics, technology and sci-ence at seven tertiary institutions in CapeTown.

The recipients include Shaakira Afrika,Kim Cloete and Ashley Botha from BishopLavis, Shehan Classen from Ravensmead,Tazna Peters from Belhar and Kurt Tem-mers from Bonteheuwel.

A total of R9m in bursaries has been han-ded over since 2007 when the youngsterswere selected as worthy recipients of theinaugural GrandWest CSI tertiary BursaryFund.

According to a statement, they have sin-ce excelled. In recognition of their achieve-ments, theywere invited to attend a specialcelebratory dinner atGrandWest onThurs-day 15 May.

At inception, the GrandWest CSI Burs-aryFundpledgedR5mover a five-year peri-od, but an additional R4m has been contri-buted toward the tertiary education of over700 financially needy students.

There are no expectations of work frombursary students on completion of theirstudies, nor do they need to repay theirbursary. The only expectation is that thestudents participate in 40 hours of volun-teer work at a community project in theirarea of residencewhich, it is hoped, will in-stil an ethos of selflessness in students.

“We are delighted by the success of ourstudents and hope they will go on to usetheir education wisely, to enrich not onlytheir own lives, but also those of everyonearound them,” saidGrandWest generalma-nager Mervyn Naidoo.

“For many of the students, they are thefirst in their family, or even their commu-nity to graduate. They have the ability butthe sad reality is that without financial as-sistance they would not have been able topursue their studies.Wehave received a lotof positive feedback from various universi-ties,whichwearedelightedby, but ourulti-mate objective is to equip our studentswiththe knowledge and means to create satisfy-ing and fulfilling careers for themselves.”
