Last year, TygerBurger, CapeGate and Smile 90.4fm gave readers, shop- pers and listeners the chance to choose the line up for the concert that takes place at the Liqui-Fruit Amphitheatre in Paarl on Saturday 21 March. What better way to spend Human Rights Day than to watch three of SA’s top acts live in this beautiful outdoor ve- nue? Famous for songs like Try and Only with you, Garth Taylor will se- renade con- cert-goers against the backdrop of a summer sunset. This is a rare perfor- mance from Garth who says he doesn’t often get a chance to perform in Cape Town. Next up will be Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels who are bound to get feet tapping with their “party hits” li- ke Give me hope Jo’Anna and I don’t wanna dance, before handing the stage over to the multi-award winning artist who needs little introduction: Theuns Jordaan. Each artist will be on stage for about an hour, which means Local is Lekker 2015 is practically three shows in one. Although the concert starts at 19:30, gates will open at 16:00, so come early and enjoy a glass of wine and somet- hing to eat. Tickets are available at Computic- ket or www.cultivaria.com. WIN! WIN! Alles was rooi. Godly get-together in Sarepta this weekend

A feeding scheme aimed at helping tofill the often empty stomachs of highschool learners in impoverished com-

munities, was launched in Kuils River re-cently.The Angel Network Feeding Scheme run

by community worker Dawn Roode, feedsabout 100 children daily. The project wasstarted earlier this year and is currentlyrunning at the Kuils River Technical Highschool in Driebergen Street in Sarepta.Dawn uses one of the classrooms and pro-

vides a variety of food, including hot crossbuns, garlic rolls, cake, fruit, sandwichesand juice to the teenagers.“Feeding schemes are a dire need at all

high schools,” Dawn said. Some of the learners assist her in the

project. Head boy at Kuils River TechnicalHigh, Byron Milton, said he enjoys beingpart of the project.“It helps build your confidence. To help

others, makes you become more independ-ent as a person. I enjoy it,” he said.Several of the teens were in high spirits

on Friday when TygerBurger visited theschool. Most of themshowedappreciation for this

labour of love done in the community.Dawn explained: “High school learners

come from primary schools where thereusually are feeding schemes. Some of themwere perhaps part of it due to financial diffi-culties at home, where theremight not havebeen food or basic toiletries.“Some high schools are located in (more)

affluent areas. There is a perception thatthere is no need for a feeding scheme, butwhat we forget is that there are learnersfrom other areas attending these schools.”Some of these areas, she said, include

Wesbank, Happy Valley, Kalkfontein andVrygrond. Dawn said the feeding scheme

was started at the high school because theyrealised a need for one.We initiated similar schemes at Sarepta

High and Silversands High until the Penin-sula School Feeding Scheme stepped in,Dawn said.“We start these feeding schemes without

a budget, but with lots of faith.“A personwill never realise what a differ-

ence and impact this spirit of ubuntu has on

these learners. With the sharing, we areshowing the learners that there are peoplewho care about them.”Dawn is also helped by community mem-

bersAngeloGallant, GavinDodgen andDel-main Gallant.“You don’t always need money to show

kindness,” she said.V Anyone wanting to assist can contact Dawn at072 697 7346.

“My whole body was alight and su-perheated.”This is how Frank Forbay, di-

visional commander for the District EastFire and Rescue Services, explained hisnear-death experience a week ago while as-sisting with fighting the blaze in the South-ern Peninsula. However, despite being engulfed by

flames and severely injuring both his handsand part of his face, Forbay is optimisticthat hewillmake a full recovery and is look-ing forward to returning back to his duties.A massive four-day long fire swept over

great parts of the Southern Peninsulawreaking havoc and causing great destruc-tion to people’s property in theMuizenberg,Tokai, Noordhoek and Constantia areas.“The chief fire officer called out everyone

to come and assist, they required all handson deck. My duty was to go around Noord-hoek and see which areas were mostly af-fected,” Forbay explained.Once the danger in Noordhoek was avert-

ed they received a call from one of his col-leagues in Hout Bay who said that the areawas in danger.“We received word of a chopper that

could not fly there. My colleague and I wentto the Chapman’s Peak tollgate to assist.Once there, a civilian stopped us and in-formed us about a lodge in the area that wasunder threat.”The fire had already crept into the build-

ing, he explained. A fire engine was alsocalled out.Forbay experienced difficulty with one of

his fire-hoses when a part of the hotel ex-ploded.“I needed tounplug thehosewhich I could

not dowithout takingmygloves off. I turnedaround and the entire room in front of me

went up in smoke. I just saw a big flame, itengulfed me. My hands were exposed andtherefore I took the brunt of the fire on myhands. Fortunately I hadmyvisor downandthat helped prevent the fire from reachingmy face,” Forbay explained. He suffered slight superficial burns onhis

face, but second degree burns to his hands. With the ball of fire in front of him he

could only retreat backwards. He ran to-wards a nearby hot tub and dove in headfirst.“I ran straight for it and just dove into it

to cool myself down.”He described the fire and injuries to his

hands as the most painful experience. “Ihavedealtwithmanyburnvictims, but I didnot realise the intense pain they experience.“I think I will have a total different form

of empathy when I come across a burn vic-

tim again. I realise it is not an easy thing,it is a painful thing,” he added. He prepared himself for a slow recovery

but said he is optimistic nonetheless.Forbay had already undergone one opera-

tion so far, physiotherapy and occupationaltherapy.“This was the first time in my career

Kleinvlei police are investigating a case ofattemptedmurderandrobbery following theattack on several commuters on a train lastweek. The armed attackers struck in one of Met-

rorail’s train carriages on Monday 2 Marchwhile travelling between the Lynedoch andEerste River train stations.Riana Scott, Metrorail spokesperson, con-

firmed the incident. She said according tothe Cape Town Station Rapid Rail Unit, un-known assailants attempted to rob commut-ers. Shots were fired and one person wasstruck in his upper arm.“The assailants jumped off the moving

train,” she said.Thewounded victimwas taken to the Tyg-

erberg Hospital.“The matter is being investigated by the

Kleinvlei police,” Scott said.Warrant Officer Annacletta Mothoalo,

spokesperson for the Kleinvlei police, saidthe victim, a 20-year-old male, was shot inhis hand while he was trying to escape byjumping out of the train’s window.“The train was moving at the time. At the

moment he is still at Tygerberg Hospital,”Mothoalo said.Police opened a skeleton docket of at-

tempted murder and robbery.“Other commuters were also robbed of

their belongings, but we are still waiting forthem to come forward and open cases,”Mothoalo said.Metrorail regional manager, Richard

Walker, said the rail giant is extremely con-cerned about the incident.“Our protection services personnel work

closely with the police to conduct regularcrime prevention actions including searchand seize operations to confiscate dangerousweapons,” Walker said. They appeal to commuters to report all in-

cidences. Their protection services unit andthe rail response unit will reassess their col-lective deployment of resources on trainsand stations to address criminal elements aseffectively as possible.“More than R200million is spent annually

on securing the rail network, we ask thatcommuters and communities help us andthe police to identify criminals so they canbe removed fromsociety andprevented frominflicting further harm on innocent civil-ians.”

The failure of the criminal justice system toconvict drug dealers, lies at the heart of thecrime and gangsterismplaguing all commu-nities.So says JP Smith, the City’s commander-

in-chief, after an alleged drug dealer was ar-rested for the fourth time in two years thisweekend. The man, reported to be a known “high

flyer” in the area was nabbed by Cape TownMetro and Kraaifontein police, in a jointoperation in Kraaifontein on Friday.

During this raid at a house in Scottsdene, officers found tik worth more than R10 000,as well as just over R4 000 in cash.During the same operation, another sus-

pect was arrested at a known drug house inEikendal, afterhewas caught trying to flush19 bags of tik andmandrax tablets down thetoilet.“These stories are an indictment of the

criminal justice system given that our offi-cers have arrested the same person four ti-mes in two years and yet he is still continu-

ing his nefarious activities with great aban-don,” Smith said in a statement to themedia.“The failure by the criminal justice sy-

stem, under the control of national govern-ment, to achieve convictions for these casesis a critical problem.”According to Smith, the two percent conviction rate for gang-re-lated crime means no amount of additionalpolice officers will be able to correct the factthat the gangsters and drug dealers remainfree to go about their business.

Their papermap charts all the informa-tion anyone could ever need to ditchcity traffic and fuel costs, by taking the

public transport plunge.JustinCoetzee’s vision is simple: take the

lead his NGO, GoMetro, already has andmake all central routes, times and modesof transport available to Joe Public.Working to and froma central point, Bell-

ville’s transport hub, Justin and his teamof techies painstakingly charted every pos-sible route to and fro, by getting on trains, minibus taxis and buses that cart commut-ers up and down. They launched their findings in a paper

map last Wednesday – the debut of knowl-edge that beats even Google to the first dibson local transit information.“Currently there is very little digital in-

formation available documenting publictransport routes, including minibus taxis,in allmajor cities in SouthAfrica,” says theDurbanville entrepreneur. The GoMetro Mobile App is widely used

across the city by train commuters, afford-ing them reliable access to information ontrain delays.

EmailmybossRecently GoMetro also added theMyCiTi

and Golden Arrow time tables to their ser-vice repertoire.Another hit, Justin says, is GoMetro’s

Email-my-boss service, whichdoes just that– it informs employers of commuters usingthe app that their employees are frozen intime on the railway network, citing speci-fics.With the new transit map, Justin and his

team and partners take this access to infor-mation a notch up. But how? “Minibus taxiinformation has remained difficult to cap-ture and produce,” Justin says.“As a result, the transport teamatGoMet-

ro felt that South Africa’s transport is nottruly integrated until minibus taxi routesare documented and mapped as part of theformal information system of a city’s trans-port system, and that such is accessible tocommuters.”So the team employed a new mapping

technique for minibus taxi and bus routesusing smartphones. “Over the course of 100days, the team rode all buses, trains andtaxis that access the Bellville Public Trans-port Interchange in order to build a com-plete map of public transport to and fromBellville,” Justin says.

BenefitThe map is the result of their efforts.Wesley Diphoko, GoMetro head of map-

ping says: “The objective of this pilotproject was to prove to ourselves and thetransport sector that mapping of all trans-port in a consolidated fashion is possible.“We have used our mapping technology

for the benefit of the residents of Bellvilleand the surrounding areas, in our ownbackyard, as it were.”With the map, anyone can access infor-

mation on where, when and how to jumpthe public transport network.“It displays the routes of all modes of

transport (buses, minibus taxis and trains),presenting how commuters can access therest of the greater Cape Town area from theBellville Transport Hub aswell aswhat sec-ond-degree connections can be made fromBellville.”It even shows the fare cost as of February

2015. “Commuters will be able to plan andtrace their journeys from Bellville to any-where in the Cape Town area without theneed for a private car.”Justin says the map will soon be distrib-

uted to large employers, university cam-puses, transport hubs, community centresand the general public in the Bellville area.Their intent is the same as that of the

Greater Tygerberg Partnership, a GoMetropartner, to “improve the accessibility andmobility of the Bellville area, and increaseeconomic activity in the revitalisationof animportant node in Cape Town.”Their next stop? First cover all of Cape

Town, then conquer Gauteng.TheGoMetroappalso allowsusers to con-

tribute their own data through posts on thesite, to “help everyone outsmart publictransport delays”.The best part is the ease: GoMetro can be

used to access schedules and announce-ments even on the most basic of phones –no internet data plan required.

Residents in the Green Park Informal Set-tlement along the R300 – an area prone toflooding – might be experiencing a muchdrier winter season this year.

The area, aswell as neighbouring inform-al settlement Los Angeles, have been expe-riencing flooding of homes year after yeardue to the low lying area onwhich the settle-ment is built. The areas are also situated ina wetlands nature reserve, ward councillorCynthia Claasen told TygerBurger lastweek.

Claasen saiddue to ongoing floods and fol-lowing several consultations with the com-munities, a decision was taken to raisesome of the platforms in the area to whereinformal structures can be relocated.

She said most of the water that seepsthrough homes come from the R300 high-way near Delft.

Claasen said a total of 66 structures willbe moved onto three raised platforms inGreen Park before the start of winter.

The construction of the platforms are al-ready underway.

According to Claasen the project costsabout R4 million.

Apart from Green Park and Los Angelesa similar project will also be undertaken in

the Vrygrond Informal Settlement in Kalk-fontein, Kuils River.

“We started with the project about amonth ago in Green Park.”

The completion of the raised platformswill take about two months, she said.

“We hope to relocate some of the housesto the platforms this month already.”

Claasen explained that rocks are mount-ed on the side of the raised platforms in or-der to make the surface more compacted.

“There are plans to build houses in the ar-ea, but until these projects start we havetaken these steps as an interim solution,”Claasen said.

The piece of land on which the informalsettlement is built is the property of theWestern Cape provincial government.

“Wearewaiting on the provincial govern-ment’s de-proclamation of the piece of land.

“Once theyhavehanded it over to theCityof Cape Town, then talks about providinghouses can resume.”

Claasen said since she became councillorin 2011 they have been battling to buildhouses in the area.

“It is not easy. It can take up to six years.Fortunately the people in the area havebeen patient. There has not been any riotsor protests,” she added.

Construction of informal houses inGreenPark began in 1994.

“All criminal activities, no matter whenor where they occur, are of great concernto us, and we strongly condemn this activi-ty, particularlywhere itmayhave an adver-se impact on the surrounding communi-ties.” Tabby said that attacks on BAT vehi-cles have been an ongoing problem whichthey are working hard, in conjunction withthe relevant authorities, to curb.

Local wasp control teams are drowningin the demand to keep up as home ow-ners are swamped by the devilish little

alien wasps. The small black and yellow European and

Germanpaperwaspshaveplagued residentsin the far northern suburbs for a couple ofyears now, since it was first spotted in KuilsRiver around 2010.

They nest in the ground and under roofsand have a nasty sting, some colonies evengetting violent when disturbed.

To date 4 800 nests have been removed bythe City of Cape Town’s invasive speciesunit in areas of Kraaifontein, BrackenfellandDurbanville, while abacklog of 500 casesstill awaits.

Two dedicated teams of four memberseach were instituted and specially trainedsome fivemonths ago anattempt to stem thisinvasion, but the City now reminds homeowners they themselves are primarily res-ponsible for pest control.

“TheCitywill assist depending on its avai-lable capacity ... the units are doing all it canwith available resources, to respond speedi-ly to the high volume of calls which it is re-ceived ... and residents have to be patient asthe teamsattend to the logged calls,” says theCity’s mayco member for energy, environ-mental and spatial planning, Johan van derMerwe.

Getting rid of the queen waspAdel Kleynhans from Kraaifontein belie-

ves the problem could lie therein that the te-ams spray the nests during the day, while

most of the wasps are out.“Atnight they comebackand thenext day,

the day after the City’s team sprayed ourlawns, most of thewasps are back,” she says.

Ulrike Irlich, project manager of the earlydetection, rapid response units, agrees thewasps aren’t in the nests during the day, butthat this should not pose a problem.

“The queen remains on the nest and wit-hout her the otherwaspswon’t survive,” shesaid.

She said that this year’s project was a trialrun to gauge the problem and monitor theimpact.

“We hope to getmore funds next yearso we can have at le-ast five teams wor-king on the ground,”she said.

This, according toIrlich, will inable theteams to work streetby street in problemsuburbs to eradicatethe pest.

Following an out-cry from the public, the City last yearpartnered with theSouth African Natio-nal Biodiversity In-stitute, the depart-ment of environmen-tal affairs, Stellenbosch municipality andStellenboschUniversity, to pool resources totrain adedicated teamequippedwith specialsuits and equipment, tomanage the invasivewasps. Another team was added in Februa-ry.

“In excess of R680 000 had already beenspent on controlling the invasive wasps sin-ce October 2014, when the wasp season star-ted.

Sightings reported daily“The season usually ends in May, depen-

ding on the weather, when the wasps go intohibernation for thewintermonths,”headds.

Van der Merwe says sightings are beingreported daily.

“Thewasp control teamhas been doing itsbest, working tirelessly, six days a week torespond to the high volume of calls regar-

ding invasive wasps.“Private home ow-

ners can contact a re-putable pest controlcompany should theyrequire more urgentassistance,” he saysand requests ownerswho opt for this tosend a report contai-ning their street ad-dress and the numberof nests removed to [email protected] whenthey remove the nestsprivately as this helpswith the City’s futureplanning and rese-arch.

Both alien invasive wasp species, the Eu-ropean paper wasp and the German wasp, are listed as a category 1B invasive speciesin the National Environmental Manage-ment Biodiversity Act.

“This means that scientists have agreed

the wasps have to be removed by law as theypose a threat to the local ecosystem and se-veral important industries such as decidu-ous fruit, wine and beekeeping industries,”Van der Merwe explains.

Beekeepers have reported with dismaythat German wasps have infiltrated severallocal bee hives and have killed honeybees.

Still spreading rapidlyAccording to Van der Merwe the most se-

vere infestations of the paper wasp havebeen found in Kuils River, Kraaifontein,Durbanville and Brackenfell.

“It is spreading rapidly however and nestshave been spotted a far as on the N7, Botha-sig, Athlone and Plumstead. A large popula-tion of wasps was discovered in Constantialast week,” he says.

The Germanwasp is known to bemore ag-gressive than the European paper wasp andappears to be less densely distributed in theurban areas.

“It is not aswell established as theEurope-an paper wasp and the City is hopeful thatit can be brought under control after a fewseasons with sufficient resources,” he says.

There are two ways in which the invasivespecies unit can be reached: by logging therecord on the City of Cape Town SpotterNet-work at www.capetowninvasives.org.za.This is the preferred and fastest method ofgetting a response.

Alternatively, residents can send ane-mail to [email protected] that wasps are in their suburb in thesubject line, with their address, contact de-tails and a map of their location in the bodyof the email. There is a longer waiting timefor this method.

“Solank daar kontrakte is, is hier

Hy is ’n

With the powerful Masters V8s, Clas-sic Cars and Fine Cars all due tomake their first appearance during

the second round of the popular Power Se-ries sponsored by Wingfield Motors at Kil-larney on Saturday, local fans will get a bet-ter indicationofwhat is going to be availableto them this season.Despite that, it’s the start of the first BoldMarine GTi Challenge race that is likely tograb the greatest initial attention. The may-hem that occurred after the multiple colli-sion when the lights changed for the sameevent last month, has seldom been equaledat Killarney. So much so that racing onlyproceeded in an orderly fashion at the thirdattempt.Drivers who avoided the worst of the cha-os that day and are likely to shine again on

Saturday include Shane and Nian du Toit,Bessie Bester and the promising youngMar-co Busi. Behind them, reigning championPaul Simon claimed the class C honours ashe set about retaining his title.

Masters can ruleIn the Masters events, dominant Silverclass drivers Franco Donadio and Britishace Stephen Young have been promoted andcould cause a new problem for former SouthAfrican Superkart champion and multipleMasters titleholder Marcel Angel, in the de-fense of his gold class award.Others worth considering here includethe versatile Craig Jarvis, Charles Artonand former Supercar champion RichardSchreuder.Away from the leaders, the progress of de-velopment rookies Ashraf Fredericks anddemure lady driver Nashrene Schloss is go-

ing to bemonitoredwith interest in theMak-ita Formula Supercar class. Fredericks didwell to claim the bronze award during thefirst round while Schloss was not far behindhim.Expect a genuineGermanblitzkrieg in theMidas Clubman events where the surpris-ingly quick Volksies of Clint Rennard andJesse Huggett are facing up to Andre John-son’s Audi turbo and a panzer division ofBeemers in thehands ofGavinCerff, danger-ous Danie vanNiekerk andNieyaazModack(if he enters on time).A similar situation exists in class BwhereAlex Johnson’s AudiQuattro is surely goingto be challenged by Mansoor Parker in hisBMW 325.The Mutlu Batteries Classic Cars are alsomaking their first appearance. Here it is go-ing to be Anton Rollino in his powerful V8Chev CanAm who will have to fend of the

attentionhe is likely to receive fromRichard“Quick” Quixley (Datsun 240Z) and TrevorMomberg (V6 Ford Capri).

Fine CarsThe Fine Cars, that enjoy a family rela-tionship with the Classics, have attractedtheir usual rich variety of entries.
