tog deelgeneemen diemeerderheidwas kinders.
stryd teen dwelmmisbruik aanpaknie.

A man from Kuils River almostwalked into a trap set by an internetcon artist recently when his emailaccount was blocked.
Chris Henn was informed that inorder to unlock the account he hadto supply personal information, which included his bank details.
“When I picked up my son on Sat-urday he questioned me about anemail I forwarded to him. I neverforwarded any mail to him. I wasstunned when I could not access myemail account when we got home.I went to an internet cafe and re-ceived a message informing me thatmy account was blocked due tosomeone else trying to access myaccount. I had to complete a form,
which required information suchas my name, surname, country,”Henn explains.
All this seemed pretty normal toHenn, but then he had to completethe “billing section”, which askedhis credit card number, expiry dateand last few digits on the back of thecard.
“I knew that if someone had thatinformation they could do internetpurchases on the card, so I left thatinformation out,” he says.
M-Web confirmed that this is in-deed a scam and that it is quite acommon one at that.
They urged internet users to nev-er give any personal information toanyone over the internet and thatmessages such as the one Henn re-ceived should be ignored.

The enforcement of the Tobacco Act at cer-tain public domains has left a citizen unhap-py, because he feels that the act is appliedunfairly.
“I have seen many restaurants closingdown.
I don’t see that shebeens are being shutdown,” says theman, who chooses to remainanonymous.
He feels this is unfair and that the princi-ple of this act should apply to pubs, clubs, restaurants and shebeens.
According toTobaccoControl Laws, SouthAfrica permits 25 % of floor space in publicplaces or workplaces for smoking.
These include hotels, restaurants, guesthouses and casinos.
It states that the law applies to any indoor, enclosed areawhich is open to thepublic and
includes aworkplace and a public conveyan-ce.
“Owners of restaurants are informed ofthe requirements of the notice relating toSmoking of Tobacco Products in Public Pla-ces promulgated in terms of theTobaccoPro-ducts Control Act, which is enforced to ob-tain a business license,” Richard Bosman, executive diretor of the city’s safety and se-curity department said.
Bosman added that environmental healthpractitioners enforce the requirements du-ring routine visits to restaurants by servinglegal notices and issuing fines should trans-gressions continue.
Councillor Lugiswa James urges the com-munity to report any contraventions in thisregard to the South African police for inves-tigation.
All police station numbers are availableon www.saps.gov.za.

Twosocialwork students areworkingonmaking some special learners at a schoolin Belhar, extra special.
Mxolisi Mangxola and Adrian Seherriefrom the University of theWestern Cape arecurrently doing their practicals at the OasisSpecial School in Belhar.“This is a school for severely mentally
challenged learners,” said Mangxolo.“As part of our practicals, we are organis-
ing a fundraising and awareness project onWednesday 17 October to assist the school toaddress the dire educational needs of thelearners.“Many of the learners come from the sur-
rounding extremely impoverished commu-nity. Sincemany of the learners are often ex-cluded from mainstream society, the focus
of the project is to create an awareness aboutsocial inclusion.“We will also address the following fac-
tors; teenage pregnancies, and HIV/Aids,which may cause social exclusion.”Mangxolo added that they would be invit-
ing many of the key stakeholders that facili-tate awareness programmes on HIV/Aids,schools, nurses and social workers of thecommunity to participate in the project.“We would like as many people from the
surrounding communities to be a part of thisproject to showour learners that the commu-nity cares about them.“Part of our appeal is also that we would
appreciate any consumables as donationssuch as cool drinks, sugar, tea, biscuits, cof-fee, milk, sweets, paper plates and cups.”Further information about the event from
the school on 021 952 2100, or emailMangxolaat [email protected].

Toastmaster’s Year (June 2012 – June 2013)they would like to promote and start newToastmaster clubs in the northern suburbs.Carl Holman is the vice-president Educa-
tion and area governor for the Tygerberg ar-ea and feels that there are still many morepeople out there who could benefit from be-coming a toastmaster.“It is lots of fun,” he says.“Apart from learning how to have the con-
fidence to stand up and speak in front of peo-ple, there’s also the social side of thingswhere you meet people from all walks of lifeand become lifelong friends.”Rochelle Manuel from Bellville South is
one of the newer members having joined inOctober last year but already rising throughthe ranks. She was elected secretary of the Siemens
Toastmasters Club (situated in Plattekloof,Parow) last year and retained the positionfor this year. This year she also received the award for
Most ImprovedToastmaster, and duringAu-gust won the Humorous Speech contest inthe club, and for the area against four otherclubs.“I am confident that her improved public
speaking skills, leadership and self-confi-dence will encourage and inspire others tojoin Toastmasters,” continued Holman.“Her personal and professional achieve-
ment will inspire others to step out of theircomfort zone and make a difference in thecommunity of Bellville South and surround-ing areas.“We want people from all areas to take up
the challenge and we will be there for themto help them set up their own clubs whenev-er and whever it is needed.”Siemens Toastmasters Club meets every

Animportantpartnership inmobile com-municationwill be benefiting young peo-ple in the community.
Keep the Dream 206 is a cross racial, cul-tural and religious organisation that hasbeen operating in the Delft and surroundingareas since 2003. It offers the youth at riskin these areas an alternative to drugs, teen-age sex and pregnancies, abuse, alcoholism, gangsterism and most of the negative influ-ences that penetrate the community on a dai-ly basis. They are now set for greater achievements
with their partnership with Uronimo, a mo-bile media platform that enables virtuallyevery user worldwide to enjoy a superiormobile experience and receive any form ofdigital content on their mobile device, re-gardless of the type of phone, network or car-rier.Margo Lawrence of Keep the Dream said
that what initially attracted Uronimo’s at-tention to the plight of the organisation wasthe possibility of the institution possibly be-ing forced to close its doors, unless much-needed funding was made available.“It is for this reason that Uronimo ZA has
agreed to a partnership with us,” she said.“There is undoubtedly a great need for so-
cial development in South Africa and withtechnology of this nature we are able to pro-vide this institution and others with assist-ance through mobile advertisements to as-sist with the raising of funds.”She pointed out that this initiative will en-
able them to continue their work in the com-
munity where instead of the negatives, theywarn the youth about the dangers ofHIVandAids, anger, crime, rape, teenage pregnan-cies, etc, and offer them dancing, singing, art, poetry, sport, and life skills.“Through our programmes we motivate
them to complete and further their educa-tion. We say that without education, there isno liberation.“We also run a programme called Taking
Charge which is a concept that has been de-signed to be used as an early interventionpreventative model relating to the negativesthat penetrate our youth at risk on a dailybasis.“Through this programme youth are
taught preventative measures and how tocope with peer pressure and temptations.”Dance also plays a big part in their activi-
ties. “Currently dance is the foremost pro-gramme and our dancers have performed atmany of the big stages in Cape Town,” shecontinued.“The aim is to create the platforms and ex-
pose the talent of our youth at risk. We havean ongoing dance project that has been run-ning for the past three yearswhere youth aretaught the art of dance.“Out of this project Street Steppers, a pro-
fessional dance groupwas born. With all thiswe aim to promote better social cohesion bychanging the mindsets of the youth from thenegative to the positive so they copewith thepressures of today and become positive fu-ture role models in their schools and thecommunity they live in.”For more information Lawrence can be
contacted on 072 703 9948, or email [email protected].

There are not a lot of things thatinstantly lift yourspirits thewaya military marching band does.
The upbeat music and militarymeticulousness transports you to astate of mind, where a sense of cer-tainty shelters you from the caresof everyday life.Everything, from the flawless
uniforms to the immaculately pol-
ished instruments, is designed toshowcase that age-old army tradi-tion of duty and honour. It’s the stuff goose-flesh is made
of, genuinely moving and worthy. It’s in this tradition that the
Mother City is preparing for theseventh Cape Town Military Tat-too, that will be presented at theCastle of Good Hope from 31 Octo-ber to 3 November 2012, and fromwhat the media has gathered thusfar it is a production guaranteed to
enthral Capetonians, and visitorsfrom all over the country andabroad.Theword “tattoo” is derived from
the centuries-old military ritualthat originated in the Low Coun-tries of Europe during the 16th and17th centuries, when patrols wouldbe sent out near nightfall to alertoff-duty soldiers in the taverns thatit was time to return to their bar-racks, Brigadier General ChrisGildenhuys explained at the media
introduction, which tookplace at theCastle of GoodHope, lastThursdayevening.Gildenhuys
is the com-manding gen-eral of the ar-moured for-mation of theSouth AfricanDefence force.“At each
tavern the tav-ern-keeperwould be in-structed: ‘Doeden tap toe’,which meant‘close the taps on your beer-bar-rels’. All the armies fighting in theLow Countries adopted this prac-tice, and as the centuries passed, the nightly ritual turned into aunique display of military showbusiness,” he said.“The Cape Town Military Tattoo
2012 is structured on the same linesas Tattoos elsewhere in the worldbut this truly South African mili-tary event will concentrate on actsshowcasing the history of CapeTown and South Africa,” he said.“The Edinburgh Military Tattoo,
for example, is directly or indirect-ly responsible for a large slice ofScotland’s tourist spend,” he said.“The Organising Committee of
the Cape Town Tattoo firmly be-lieves that the continuation of theCape Town Military Tattoo 2012will turn Cape Town into the Edin-
burgh of Africa.”In the South African tradition,
there simply couldnot be amore ap-propriate place for this tattoo totake place than the Castle of GoodHope. The main performance will start
with a recreation of the sixteenthcentury beating the drummer call, followed by the Key Ceremony by aselected squad from the CastleGuard, dressed in the old-time uni-forms of the halberdiers (guards). The magic and splendour of the
evening will culminate with theperformance of Tchaikovsky’s“1812” Overture.Tickets are R120 for adults (cen-
tre stand) and R100 (side stands).Children between six and 12 yearspay R50.Tickets are currently on sale at
Computicket.

SAREL BURGER
’n Haarbreedte.
gende kampioen. – (Sarel Burger)
Die groot vraag is:Wie teen wie?

After a highly successful river paddling sea-son in the Western Cape, an Edgemead canoe-ist is determined to make his mark in thisyear’s Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon.Ivan Kruger, a member of the Century City
Canoe Club, will take on South Africa’s bestpaddlers in the 82km race that starts in Cra-dock this coming Saturday. Some international stars will also make
their appearance in this exciting two-day riverrace in the heart of the Eastern Cape.Kruger, whohas just turned 20, is among the
top three u-23 paddlers in the country. He fol-lowed up his win in the arduous 240km BergRiver Marathon in July with a second placingin the Breede River Marathon in September(in a double canoewith JosieWilliamsof PaarlCanoe Club). He was placed in the top 10 overall in the
country in both these events.Ivan is no stranger to punching above his
weight having previously broken the u-18record at the Berg River Marathon at the ageof 15.HeobtainedhisProtea junior colours in 2010
and took part in theWorld Marathon Champi-onships in Spain where he was placed ninthin the world in his age category.Kruger, complete his first Fish River Mara-
thonat the age of 14 and thiswill behis seventhin a row.“It’s fun fromGrassridgeDamon awater re-
lease that guarantees lots of exciting rapids allthe way to Cradock 82 km down river. It is anepic challenge of one’s paddling ability withthe added pressure of it being the SA K1 RiverMarathon Champs this year,” he says of thisyear’s challenge. The weekend will see more than 1 500 pad-
dlers taking part with some 400 entries in thesingle kayaks (K1), 500 in the double kayaks(K2) and about 100 three man kayaks (K3).When asked who will be standing between
him and his goal of a top 10 overall placingKruger sounded a bit apprehensive.“With the who’s who of South African pad-
dling on the start line at this year’s race it’sgoing to tough! Just looking at the start list isenough to give any man the shakes. For start-ers there’s Len Jenkins, the defending K1
champ for as long as most people can remem-ber, who has never lost a K1 year on the Fish. Then there’sHankMcGregor, 2011WorldMar-athon champ and a multiple K2 winner of therace. I am pretty sure he is hungry to breakLen’s clean sweep of K1 victories. Not to men-tion some international darkhorses that couldeasily cause an upset,” he said.Krugerwas as cautious about predicting his
chances for a podium position in the u-23 agecategory.“This will undoubtedly be equally tough sinceI have no doubt that the top three u-23 paddlerswill be in the top 10 overall. All the top u-23contenders are very capable of a top three fin-ish – Protea paddlers like Grant van der Walt(current u-23 world marathon champion), hisyounger brother Brandon, Andrew Birkett(currentDusiK1andK2champion) andmyself(previous junior K2 winner in the Fish with
Brandon) just to mention a few names.”Krugerhashoweverput in a lot of hardwork
in preparing for the race.“With the Fish just around the corner, I am
now moving into my final preparation stage. My race boat is ready and set up and I’m feel-ing super strong. This will bemy seventh timecompeting in the Fish and I have achieved a12th place overall in a K2, so I am hoping toreturn with a top 10 overall as well as a topthree u-23 finish,” he said. When Ivan returns it will be straight into
the surfski season and he will be setting hissights on the CTWorld Cup race and the CapePoint Challenge in December.Despite this heavy schedule, the costs of
equipment, race fees, travelling expenses, coa-ching and sports nutrition, Kruger is determi-ned to reach his ultimate goal of becoming aworld champion.
