“We do this until both parties are ready. If the victim has any questions the of-fender then has the opportunity to an-swer these questions.“We have had some successful ses-

sions where the victims have forgiventheir perpetrators,” Akhona explained.Valda Lucas, another victim, was also

afforded the opportunity to meet her at-tacker.“I feared the day that he would be re-

leased from jail,” the robbery victim

said.Later during the session she said:

“One should always believe that there isgood in others and look for that good.”Her attacker, Sofire Bomvana, who

served a 15-year jail sentence, said hewas thankful for her forgiveness.“It is not always easy to forgive,” he

says.Towards the end of the programme Si-

pho said he found peace in his heart hav-ing forgiven his attacker.

Victims of crime need to talk abouttheir traumatic experience often inorder for them to recover and be able

to move on.This is the advice of a volunteer at the

Kuils River police’s Victim EmpowermentProgramme (VEP) where victims of crime– mostly women and children – are regular-ly treated, counselled and supported after acrime has occurred. The VEP room was recently upgraded

and boasts several toys and wall art to en-sure a safe and secure environment.SashmaBergman, coordinator of theVEP

room, told TygerBurger last week the teamalways tried to counsel victims as soon aspossible after an incident.“We never really go out to the crime

scene, but rather bring the victims here toa safe and comfortable environment,” Sash-ma says. The team regularly counsels vic-timsof domestic abuse, sexual assault, rape, robbery and murder. The aid of theVEP teamhowever does not

stop there.

“When these victims have to appear incourt, we as the VEP team like to be thereand in so doing support them,” adds Sash-ma, who previouslyworked as a debt collec-tor.She resigned her job after she became re-

born. “God guided me and I decided to doa social development auxiliary course for ayear after which I started working here,”she says. Her love for babies and children, she ex-

plains, is actually what made her decide topursue a career as a social worker.“Working with children and even the eld-

erly – that is what drives me,” she says.Currently there are 14 volunteers work-

ing at the VEP room. The group are onstandby throughout the week. The team are currently planning a mas-

sive march for Wednesday 25 Novemberfrom the police station down the main roadto the Fresh Stop at the Caltex service sta-tion as part of their annual 16 Days of Activ-ism celebrations. Kuils River residents areinvited to participate. They will also be handing out clothes in

Jacobsdal on Saturday 28 November as partof the 16 Days activities.

‘Victims need to talkabout their trauma’

Anopen-air carols by candlelight eveningwillbe held in Kalkfontein on Friday 4 December. The theme is “for the community, by the com-munity”.The event will be held in Mimosa Street at

19:30. Entry is free and everyone is welcome.“We would like the community to join in oursing-along and come listen to the artists fromour community and local churches thatwouldbe performing,” says organiser Didi Didlof.

Residents of Kalkfontein have taken tothe streets –not to protest against poorservice delivery though, but to clean

up the area’s dirty streets themselves. The area has several street corners and

open pieces of land littered with rubbish. This is what sparked some communityworkers here to start the Clean Up YourCommunity awareness campaign – a cam-paign coordinated by the community-basedorganisation Badisa through their “BureHelp Bure” volunteers. The campaign was launched a week ago

at the local Kalkfontein community hall.Eugene de Vis, a Badisa community de-

velopment worker, said last Wednesday’slaunch of the programme was a huge suc-cess.On the day informative flyers were dis-

tributed among the residents by the volun-teers, Eugene said.

“The aim of the campaign is to promotegood neighbourliness, to raise conscious-ness about the importance of living in aclean environment and to instil a culture ofownershipand responsibility amongpeoplewho live in the community,” Eugene ex-plained.He added they also aim to encourage

households to keep their yards and side-walks neat and tidy at all times. “This waychildren can have a positive outlook on thecommunity.”Streets that were targeted include Veren-

igde, Bettie, Elmarie, Hester, Elizabeth andBrenda streets.Several community organisations, early

childhood development centres and com-munity leaders including ward councillorJacob Jacobs attended last week’s launch. They were joined by Stanley Sayers, the

eastern sub-district health promotor at theCity of Cape Town and Phillip Bosman, arepresentative from the City’s departmentof environmental health.

Residents gettheir hands dirty

Some of the volunteers who helped distributeflyers in Kalkfontein last week are from leftMagdeline Joshua, Emma Cleophas, ElizabethLebitsa, Elsie Van Wyk, Wadene Davids, ClaudiaNaken, Julia Sohuma, Carol Collins and AnnaDunn, with Greef Manka in front.

Some of the area’s children from differentECDs also participated in the day’s activities.

Road deaths and injuries are sudden, violent and traumatic events tearingfamilies and communities apart.

The overall scale and the individual dev-astation caused by road deaths and injuriesand its impact upon families and communi-ties, will be the main focus on Sunday, when minister of transport Dipuo Petersvisits Cape Town to commemorate WorldDay of Remembrance (WDR).This global United Nations commemora-

tion takes place on the third Sunday of No-vember every year to remember the morethan a million of people who have beenkilled and injured on the world’s roads.Peters will be joined by local community

leaders, provincialMECs, law enforcementagencies, public transport organisations aswell as members of the community at Man-dela Park Stadium on Sunday.According to statistics provided by Glob-

al Road Safety Partnership South Africa(GRSP), vehicle collisions represent theleading cause of crash fatalities across theglobe, accounting for nearly 1,3 milliondeaths and approximately 50 million non-fatal injuries per year.“Thismakes road crashes one of themost

significant contemporary public healthchallenges. More than 90% of global deathsfrom road traffic injuries occur in low andmiddle-income countries like South Afri-ca,” says GRSP spokesperson RaushanaArnold. The scourge of road traffic injuries and

fatalities is particularly worrisome in theAfrica region, where South Africa hassome of the highest fatality rates in theworld – 31,9 deaths per 100 000 per year.“While stating the global statistics and

putting the cost of traffic crashes in eco-nomic terms are important, often thismasks the human suffering endured byfamilies and communities as a result ofroad traffic crashes. We tend to forget thatbehind each statistic are families and com-munities torn apart as a result.“WDR is also a day on which we thank

the emergency services and reflect on theburden and cost of this daily continuingdisaster to families, communities andcountries, as well as on ways to halt it.“The impact is long-lasting; often perma-

nent. The distress experienced by this hugenumber of people is all the greater becausemany of the victims are young, many of thecrashes could and should have been pre-vented, and also because government’s andsociety’s response to road deaths and inju-ry and to bereaved and injured victims isoften inadequate, unsympathetic and inap-propriate to a loss of life or quality of life.”According to Arnold, WDR is intended to

respond to the need of crash victims forpublic recognition of their loss.

Unless a speed hump gets erected intheir street, someone will get hurt.

This is the opinion of Kuils Riverresident Denvir Theunissen, who has drawnup a petition to have a traffic calming meas-ure erected in his street. Motorists and bik-ers often speed here, he says.

The road in question is Goudwilger Street,Amandelrug.TygerBurger recently reported on the

planned speed humps for Patrys Street near-by, “Speed humps in the planning,” Wednes-day 28 October. Theunissen responded, say-

ing they have been struggling to get the samedone in their area for some time now.

“Our street is 300 metres long and we don’thave sidewalks. People run, cycle and walktheir dogs, and kids play in the street. Achurch is situated at the T-junction of Goud-wilger Street. I personally have had a coupleof near misses exiting my driveway,” hewrote in the petition.

The petition, dated 4 August 2015, to datehas 49 signatures. Residents of GoudwilgerStreet hope that this might make a differ-ence after their initial request to have aspeed hump built was denied a year ago.

Theunissen says what is more upsetting,is that two neighbouring streets – Patrys and

Fisant streets – are now given speed humps.“This (Goudwilger) is a straight road.

When do they want to act – when someonegets killed first?” Denvir wants to know.

In a copy of the original outcome of assess-ments done in Goudwilger Street issued bythe City of Cape Town’s Transport for CapeTown and dated 21 November 2014, it saysassessment of roads incorporates a range offactors. These include speed, accident histo-ry, traffic volumes, pedestrian facilities, property access and population density. Italso includes parking activity and pedestri-an and cyclist activity.

The 2014 assessment found that the trafficvolume in Goudwilger Street is acceptable

and within the environment capacity of theroad. It also states that pedestrian activitieswere observed to be low. Pedestrian and ve-hicle conflict as a result are also consideredto be low. There are also no schools and pub-lic parks nearby, the assessment states.

According to Theunissen however, thispicture changes after hours.

“Most of the road users are here after17:00. That is when they need to do their sitevisit and survey,” he says.

Theunissen says he plans to take the issuefurther. “I might have to go to parliament,”he adds.

A copy of the petition was e-mailed to thelocal council’s office.

‘Must someone get killed first?’

When local songbird Can Skylarkfirst stepped out as a solo perform-er, she vowed to help up and com-ing artists.

She’ll be honouring this whenthe new music skills initiative TheMotive launches at Bellville’s Col-lective Arts theatre this week.

Can describes the initiative as anopportunity for up and coming tal-ented musicians to learn and expe-rience what it takes to become awell-rounded entertainer withinthe music industry.

Part of The Motive’s mandate isto produce new artists and developskills to place South Africa on aninternational platform.

Four promising acts have suc-cessfully auditioned and complet-ed the course and will showcase

their talents at the The Motive’slaunch this weekend (20 to 22 No-vember). The aptly named “Mo-tivees” performing at the launch

include Cilino, Keziah Judah,Jayed and Bryan Daniels, whohave gone through a series ofhands-on workshops covering sub-

jects like song writing, brandingand marketing, etiquette, studiorecording and live performance.

They’ll be joined for these per-

formances by the “Time bomb”singer Can Skylark herself.

She passionately explains thatit’s great to be able to show busi-nesses, other artists and individu-als the value of what can be createdthrough collaboration.

She adds that South Africa has arich history of music with manypeople “seeking refuge, expressionand comfort through music and thearts”.

“It is using this knowledge thatwe have come to understand thatmusic plays a very important rolein our society,” says Can.V Tickets for the evening of music costR120. Email management@canskylark.com to book. For more informationcall 082 904 4664 or visit facebook.com/CanSkylarkMusic.

Tygerberg hospital never sleeps, but be-tween 9 and 13 November ward G3 ofthis hospital became a hub of activity

as 43 little patients with facial anomalieswere treated here as part of Smile Week. Two doctors, Professor FrankGraewe andDr Alexander Zühlke, and their plastic andreconstructive surgical teams used two the-atres and the staff of ward G3 to make thishappen, while the Smile Foundation filledthe gaps and took care of all the needs thatarose around this group of patients.

Free services eight times a yearThe Smile Foundation, an NGO that wasfounded in 2000, has a memorandum witheight academichospitals inSouthAfrica.Al-though they support the hospitals through-out the year, for one week per year their ef-forts at each hospital are concentrated.“We get donors on board, support the chil-dren with their transport, help source thenecessary equipment for their operationsand offer services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy and psychology forparents and patients so that they are morerelaxed before surgery,” says Moira Gertsz, operations executive director at the SmileFoundation. She says Smile does not only make thingseasier for the patients, their families anddoctors; they also work to create an aware-ness about facial anomalies in children.“There are somanychildren in this regionneeding corrective surgery, and it will bevery gratifying for us to see them havingthese much needed operations,” she says. One in 750 South African children is bornwith a facial anomaly.“We are mindful of the needs of the hospi-tal, we acknowledge the challenges of eachhospital and the different communities they

serve. We have to balance the do-nors’ expectations. But in the endSmile is all about the kids.“We do not charge their familiesanything. Those who qualify to behelped are those without medicalaid who are patients at the hospital,as well as some patients who are re-ferred through us,” says Gertsz.According to Doreen Kosi of Ad-cock Ingram, who sponsored thisweek, “Smile Week is our flagshipproject. We are guided by Smile andwe follow their strategy.Wewant toadd value.”One of the patients who receivedplastic surgery is Ilke Moses (11)from Paarl, who’ll have her smileback in a week or so after her postoperative swelling has disappeared.Ilke suffered facial paralysiswhen shewas five years old becauseof a bacterial infection in her ear. Ina prior operation, a newmuscle wasconstructed in her cheek, but themuscle sagged, skewing her face. This has now been corrected.“It helped to meet other parents. We shared our stories and spent aday together. A strong bond wasformed. We even exchanged num-bers,” says Ilke’s mother, Jose-phine.Although Ilke will not be writingexams following her surgery, hermarks are good enough for her topass Grade 5.“She is a clever girl. She broughtall her school work to the hospital, because she wants to become a doc-tor,” Josephine says.Cole Basson (5) from Brooklyn was bornwith a hole behind his palette. His mother,Megan, says the hole was almost 7cm in di-ameter and had a detrimental effect on his

speech development.“This was his first operation and hopeful-ly also his last. It will take a couple of daysfor his speech, which was very nasal, to re-

turn and then he will start withspeech therapy through Smile. Iam glad it is done. He will startwith Grade R next year,” Megansays. The day after his operation,Cole was eating yogurt and hadhis face painted by volunteerswho entertained the children inthe play room of Ward G3.

Scars, birth defects repairedNiyole Tsokobe (4) from Atlan-tis was in a terrible car accidentwith her two sisters in December. They all miraculously survived, but Niyole has an huge scar on theside of her head where skin graft-ing was done and hair will nevergrow.Bit by bit Niyole’s scalp will bestretched to replace the scar. TheSmile Foundation made the sec-ond of her operations possible. Al-though she seemed calm beforeher daughter went into surgery, hermother,Nomlinganiso, admit-ted this has been a very tryingyear because of the accident.Reconstructive craniofacialsurgery for a one-year-old boyfromKhayelitsha, ear reconstruc-tion for a child from Bredasdorpand plastic surgery for a little girlwho has Schimmelpenning’s Syn-drome were just a few of the otherinterventions that the medicaland Smile teams faced this week. The next Smile week will com-mence at Red Cross Children’shospital on 30 November.

“What stood out for me was the will anddetermination of the mothers. They are thereal heroes in this country. The strength ofmommies are really unique,” says Gertsz.

SOCCER: LOCAL TEAM GAINING GROUND

Milano staysin touchJOSEPH PILLAY

Milano United is slowly but surelygaining ground at the top of Safa’sABCMotsepe Second League compe-

tition. The team seems to be well on tracktokeep in touchwith the topdogs by the timeChristmas comes.Desmond Crowie, Milano’s coach, saw his

team fight off the challenges of FC CapeTown’s Rebels team to win 3-1 in GrassyPark over the weekend. The result means that Crowie’s charges

now boast 10 points (three wins and a draw, with one loss) after five league outings. The Grassy Park team occupies third

place on the log – one point behind defendingchampion Glendene United (11 points) andfive points behind log leader SteenbergUnit-ed (15 points), who has already played sixleague games this season.Nevertheless, Wade Crowie, son of former

PSL player and star coach Duncan Crowie

(now a youth coach at Ajax Cape Town), putin an excellent display to show great experi-ence on the field to place Milano United ina winning position, scoring off his first twoshots at goal. The visitors then reduced the deficit, but

RonwinGeorgehadotherplans and restoredMilano’s two-goal lead late in the secondhalfwith a well-taken goal of his own to securea 3-1 win for his team.

Other matchesIkapa Sporting from the Southern Cape

walked away with all three league points, flooring Black Cats 2-1 in Lawaaikamp. Hel-lenic beat the Magic 3-1 and Steenberg Unit-ed beat Kensington RC Athletico 1-0.V Tonight’s fixtures (to start at 19:30): Grassy ParkUnited v Hellenic (Solo Park, Steenberg), Mitchell’sPlain United v Atlantic Nacional (NY 49, Gugulethu),The Magic v Milano United (Mutual Park, Pinelands)and Glendene United v RC Athletico (Idas Valley, Stellenbosch).
