PROSTITUTION: ROBBERY, HIJACKINGS
Nightmare on Faure RdMICHELLE LINNERT
@linnertmb
Anyone in Eerste River would easilytell a newcomer about one of the mostnotorious roads in the area: Old Faure
Road.Readers have brought it to TygerBurger’s
attention that this road is earning its reputa-tion as a hub for criminal or shady activities.
The stretch of road is a highly functionaland busy thoroughfare between Eerste Riv-er, Baden Powell Road, the N2 highway andVan Riebeeck Road.
One element that may be an aggravatingfactor in the number of criminal activitiesis the fact that this dark road is, well, dark– there are no lights along the road.
To residents here, it is already commonknowledge that prostitutes frequent the
profitable length of tarmac. However, there are now also complaints
of roadside shacks that are allegedly used forcircumcision practices and criminals hid-ing, killing and dumping bodies there.
As if that’s not enough, allegations also in-clude robbery, hijacking, prostitutes openlyusing drugs, cows, goats and stray dogs allalong the road, as well as drunkenness andloitering.
ProstitutionPolice confirmed that a lot of criminal ac-
tivities happen along this road, but also not-ed that this has been been decreasing in re-cent months.
“Most of the crimes that happen along theroad, are due to the prostitution. This is be-cause they (sex workers) work with guards,”W/O Annacletta Mothoalo, spokeswoman of
the Kleinvlei police, said.“The prostitute’s guards are stealing from
the farming community (on the other sideof the road) there.
“We are planning to have a meeting withthe farming community, because they havesince started taking the law into their ownhands.
“We are well aware of the criminal activi-ties, and are working on it. On Fridays wehave vehicle control points to search vehi-cles, but because there is no electricity, anddue to the density of the bushes, it’s a diffi-cult area to police.
“We also do roadblocks and involve themedia so that clients of these prostitutes aremade aware that they can be robbed or hi-jacked,” she said.
“The crime has decreased a lot since wehave started to arrest the prostitutes along
the road.“Most of them have since moved their op-
erations to Baden Powell Road,” Mothoalosaid.
“There was one body dumped in Old FaureRoad, but an arrest was made in that case.”
ActionJulian Unthank, chair of the Eerste River
community policing forum, said that thereis a dire need for action from the local coun-cil. He also stated that there is a lot of workbeing done between the CPF and police inthis area.
“There’s definitely a lot of stuff happeningat Faure road. This includes prostitution, drug use and dumping of bodies, but obvi-ously the biggest problem there is the farm-ing community staying behind the road.V To page 2.

Mfuleni policehavemadeanotherhugedag-ga bust in less than two weeks.“The police were alerted of a place that is
selling dagga in the Mfuleni hostels,” saidCapt Nomathemba Muavha, spokeswomanof Mfuleni police. On Monday morning they went to this
house and “asked for permission to searchthe house for drugs,” she said. They found 10 plastic carry bags of dagga
stored in a blue municipal bag, hidden ina black wheelie bin, she said. The dagga, which weighed in at 7.929 kg,
had an estimated street value of aboutR13 000.Police arrested a 36-year-old woman.“SAPS cannot emphasise enough the im-
portance of the community’s involvementin rooting out drugs in the community.“That is why we would like to thank the
community for their continued support inthe fight against crime, by reporting illegalcriminal activities.”

Nobody wants to take responsibility forthem in the local council,” Julian said.“The city is trying to get rid of these
residents, because they want to turn thearea into a temporary residential area, similar to the one opposite the Bosasapremises. The reason the council doesn’twant to take responsibility, is so the peo-ple there can become fed up with thecriminal activities and move out there.Because of this, it is now becoming adumping ground for all types of criminalactivities.“It’s also very inaccessible to police be-
cause there is no infrastructure there tomake the area accessible. With some ofthe crimes that are happening, like rob-beries, people run into the bushes,” he
said.“We want to appeal to the public to
avoid the area at night.”John Heuvel, chair of Subcouncil 22
which is responsible for the area, saidthey were looking into the problemsalong this road.“There is a budget for street lighting.
It will be done. The local councillor (Gor-don Thomas) is working on it,” he said. When asked what the city planned to
do about the densely bushed area, Heuv-el replied that “some of the propertyalong the road does not belong to localgovernment.”V Anyone with information about criminal activities along the road is urged to contact the Kleinvlei police at 021 902 8300.

Cloete comforted the twins and urged themto believe in humanity and that not all peoplewere bad.“It was fantastic to see how excited they
werewhen they saw the gifts thatwe broughtthem,” added Wilson.“They wanted to get up from their beds to

The sergeant’s wife is seven months preg-nant, their eldest is seven. The constable’sson is nine. This is theheart-wrenching reali-ty of the two outstanding Kuils River policeofficers who died so gruesomely in the earlyhours of Sunday morning. The police van they were travelling in
along Old Faure Road near Mfuleni collidedwith a break-down truck. Then it caughtalight. The officers, Sgt Jeremy Hoop andConst Monique Portland, as well as a suspectthey had arrested earlier, were killed in theburning van.Now only the bereaved families and their
young children remain.“We had a very, very happy marriage the
past four years and I couldn’t have asked fora better husband.” This is the message fromCamilla Hoop, distraught and pregnant wid-ow of Sgt Jeremy Hoop. “The foundations helaid in ourmarriage andhis home are his leg-acy – I will build on that for our future,” shesaid. “He was a proud police officer.”The family of Const Portland are also hold-
ing on to their memories of her.“She was a very spontaneous person,”
Mary Abrahams, Monique’s mother, told Ty-gerBurger. “She was always laughing andtelling jokes and she lived for her work. Shewas a really reliable person and my righthand person, and I could always count onher.”Monique’s sister, Marilyn van de Rheede,
saidMonique had a very distinct laugh: “Youcould hear that laugh from very far. She wasa wonderful person and her son was hernumber one priority.”Marilyn said the boy, Monzavian (9), did
not seem to realise yet that his mother haddied, but the family was already in the proc-ess of getting him help to deal with the trau-ma. “He’s seeing the psychologist on Thurs-
day,” she said.Marilyn, a metro police trainee, said her
sister’s pride in her work was her own inspi-ration and motivation. “Monique lived to bea police officer.”The two officers were on patrol when the
accidenthappened, andshortlyafter thecolli-sion medical personnel were met with thefiery scene.“Paramedics fromnumerousserviceswere
called to the scene to assist. Upon their arriv-al they found a horrific scene where the bak-kie was engulfed in flames,” Werner Ver-maak, a spokesman for ER24, said.“It is understood that the vehicle caught
alight after the collision. Paramedics foundthree people that were still trapped in theburning (police) vehicle. Sadly they suc-cumbed to their injuries on the scene and(were) declared dead,” he said.Four people, believed to be from the truck,
sustainedmultiple injuries. “It is understoodthat one of the occupants was trapped in thevehicle and rescue equipment had to be usedto free him from the vehicle,” Vermaak said.Medics on the scene managed to stabilise
the four “before rushing them off to varioushospitals in the area,” he said.Police are investigating a case of culpable
homicide and no arrests have been made.
“The circumstances surrounding the inci-dent are currently under investigation andno further details can be made available atthis stage,” Col Tembinkosi Kinana, provin-cial police spokesman, said.Capt Isaac van Niekerk, spokesman of the
Kuils River police, told TygerBurger the twopolice officers were outstanding in their du-ties. Sgt Hoop was also a decorated officerwho had received a number of accolades andawards, Van Niekerk said.“I will never forget, in his interview after
he received an excellence award, how SgtHoop had said that he wanted to show hisfriends and those from his alma mater thatsomeone from an area like Valhalla Parkcould achieve great heights,” he said.“He was an excellent police officer.”Policemanagement conveyed their deepest
condolences to the families of all the deceasedwho lost their lives in the accident.“Our hearts and thoughts are with all the
bereaved families,” Kinana said.A memorial service will be held for the of-
ficers onFriday 30August at theAFMchurchin Church Street, Soneike, at 12:00.

aangespreek.
So was dit dan ook die rugbyafslui-
My jare langs my seuns serugbywedstryde was van die beste.

Crime scene educationThe women of Mfuleni and the Wesbankcommunity are now armed with informa-tion on how to treat a crime scene. The training initiative, hostedby theMfu-
leni police cluster, aimed to inform thewomen on exactly what to do if a crime wascommitted, and how to protect and preserveevidence, as well as the crime scene, saidCapt NomathembaMuavha from theMfule-ni police.“In the light of rape incidents, it has been
noted that not all people understand the im-portance and the procedure to be followedafter these crimes have been committed,”said Muavha.“This campaign, therefore, waspart of the
SAPS’s contribution and demonstration ofa caring attitude towards the victims ofcrime and particularly to the vulnerablewomen and children within our society,”she said. The session was attended by about 120
people at the Wesbank multi-purpose cen-tre, and formed part of the police’sWomen’sMonth programme, led by Maj Gen Sharon
Jephta, deputy provincial commissioner ofpolice.Thewomenwere taught, step by step, how
to handle a crime scene. Police did this byteaching thewomen to remember the abbre-viation “DNA CSI”, said Muavha. In DNA, the “D” is for “don’t touch”, “N”
for “note, record and observe” and “A” for“assist police officers”. In CSI, the “C”stands for “comfort and support the vic-tim”, “S” is for “secure crime scene” and “I”for “insist no-one interferes”.“The group was very interactive as they
posed questions to the trainer and also an-swered some of the questions,” she said“All women in attendance were amazed
at howmuch evidence is available at a rapecrime scene. That evidence could be suc-cessfully used in linking a suspect to thecrime scene,” she said.According to Muavha, the community
thought the session was “informative andalso a resounding success because it em-powered them as women. They were verythankful to the police for the initiative.”

In last week’s edition TygerBurger re-ported on a flooded street in Kleinvlei.According to residents here, the
flooding in Gemsbok Street occurswith heavy rainfall and during winterevery year because of old, unmain-tained pipes.According to Sophia Kannemeyer, a
local resident here, the pipes in ques-tion are about 40 years old, and havenever been replaced or checked forstructural damage. The city says the pipes are fine.“The area is not in need of rehabili-
tation,” Cllr Ernest Sonnenberg, act-ing mayoral committee member fortransport said.“City officials have reported that
the stormwater system in GemsbokStreet is in perfect working condition, although blockages do sometimes oc-cur due to household waste that getsdumped into the stormwater system.Residents are urged to please keep
the stormwater system free of debris.“If a blockage occurs, residents can
contact the city’s call centre on0860 103 089. If the blockage has oc-curred in the downpipes of the privatehouses, however, it is the owner’s re-sponsibility to rectify the situation.“The depot has been instructed to
flush out the stormwater system toclear any potential blockages,” Son-neberg said.

strengthen community and police relationsin the fight against crime. It also got thegroup of youths to make a promise.“In the light of the current crime situa-

“We are quite aware of the challenges fac-ing our government, parents, the youth andthe community as awhole, andwhywehavemade this collective decision. We will notaddmore grief to the ever-growingmayhemfacing today’s leaders,” he said.“We have realised that youngsters today

Residents of Tuscany Glen should notleave their wheelie bins outside at night.
This is the message from the TuscanyGlen Neighbourhood Watch to raisealertness and awareness.
“I would like to raise a serious con-cern: residents, please do not, in any cir-cumstances, put your wheelie rubbishbin outside your house the night beforecollection,” said Neil Thys, chair of thewatch group.
“This gives the wrong impression tocriminals – that you are not home. Mostbins have your house number on as well,so it is easy to target a particular house,”he said.
One of his other concerns was va-grants coming into the neighbourhoodas early as 04:00 on rubbish removal day,
which is a Wednesday.“This can mean one of many things
and also leaves room for many opportu-nities to commit crime in our communi-ty.”
He had a number of suggestions forresidents as alternatives to leaving thebins out, and to prevent any criminal ac-tivities from vagrants.
“I suggest that we do a drive to clearour community; get recycling bins forglass, plastic bottles, etc. and that themoney generated from the recycling binsbe utilised for our community and to as-sist the Tuscany Glen Crime Watch.
Neil invited all interested parties toforward any suggestions to him.V Contact Neil Thys of the Tuscany Glen CrimeWatch at 072 715 3787.

“As the police we are grateful to the com-munity when they come forward with infor-mation that could help an investigation andcontribute to seeing that the criminals whoterrorise the community, are put behindbars,” Muavha said.
“We encourage you to keep on partneringwith the police in the fight against crime inour communities,” she said.V Anyone with information can contact Capt Muavha at the Mfuleni police at 021 909 9593.

AfricaCom, Africa’s largest annual com-munications congress and exhibition, re-turns to Cape Town on 12 to 14 Novemberat the CTICC, for its biggest and best yearyet.More than a billion customers in devel-
oping markets across the African conti-nent have access to a mobile phone, but donot have a formal bank account. This has led to the development ofmobile
money applications.Mobile phone penetration is prolific and
has connected sectors of the populationpreviously hard to reach. Another primeexample is the marginalised female audi-ences across Africa who now have accessto a means of communication and are en-tering the economy for the first time. The result is that they are able to start
small businesses and monitor market pric-es or even use their burgeoning entrepre-neurial skills to become mobile moneyagents. In short, the development of mobilemon-
ey has led to key social and economicprogress across the continent, the impactof which is being keenly watched by therest of the world.Recognising the importance of this grow-
ing sector, AfricaCom 2013, will host a newtwo-day event, Mobile Money that willbring together all stakeholders in the mo-bile money ecosystem. The programme will include presenta-
tions, case studies, analyses and interac-tive discussions to identify how to benefitfrom the opportunities and overcome thechallenges of the market in Africa.V See www.comworldseries.com/africa for registration.

A youth organisation near Delft is doingcreative upliftment work, and recentlywomen’s teams strutted their (recycled)stuff to prove this point. The Truimage youth development or-
ganisation treated their mothers anddaughters to a Women’s Month tea at theEbenezer Congregational Church in KuilsRiver last Saturday. The day was attended by 60 moms and
daughters from Hanover Park, Sarepta,Kalkfontein and the Greenpark informalsettlement near Delft, from where the or-ganisation operates.“Greenpark is a very poor community
with no electricity, which makes the workthat we do so much more challenging,”said Veronique Ellers-Zoutman, directorof the organisation.“The idea around the day was also to
bring women and young girls from differ-
ent backgrounds together and to create theplatformwheremomsanddaughters couldspeak freely andopenlyabout the challeng-es they face daily,” she said.Veronique said the theme was “I love
me”, to remind the women “that reachingtheir goals in life and their full potentialstarts with loving themselves.”To prove the point that women can cre-
ate something out of nothing, the momsand daughters were handed old newspa-per, plastic bags and plastic cups out ofwhich they had to create a garment or ac-cessory.“They face a harsh reality on a daily ba-
sis,” she reflected. The young girls were reminded of their
similarities and challenges and how tokeep communication open with their par-ents and vice versa, Veronique said.“Our mothers are the greatest teachers
to their children,” she said. The women were also urged to get back
into the habit of caring for each other’schildren, and in so doing, to become a car-ing community again.“Iwould like to thank themembers of the
Congregational Church who literallyopened their doors and hearts to thesewomen, and to all the mothers who cametogether to make this day such a great suc-cess,” Veronique said.“I’d like to tell the young people to stay
true to what they want to achieve, and tonever forget the teachings of their moth-er.”V The community of Greenpark suffered great losses due to the heavy rains last week, and Truimageappealed to readers to donate old clothes, blankets, food parcels, etc. Interested parties can contact Veronique EllersZoutman at 074 590 8481 or074 853 8988.

Tyler recorded her latest album, whichwas released earlier this year, inNashville.
“The songs that come from there are justamazing,” she says to TygerBurger.
Tyler says she was struggling to findsongs that would be good enough to put ona new album, after not having recorded inabout eight years.
“I went to Nashville and I couldn’t believethe quality of the songs that were given tome to listen to,” she says.
“In fact I had enough for two albums,”Tyler says.
“Everybody’s saying to me that they lovethe album and I’m so thrilled to hear that,”she says.
“So many albums have just got one or twobig songs,”Tyler comments about aboutherlong wait between albums.
“I wanted an album where I could be real-ly happy with every song,” Tyler says, add-ing: “Any one of the songs on the albumcould be a single.”
When Tyler and her management beganscheduling appointments with publishers, they asked about using local songwritingclubs in Nashville as a resource, and theywere firmly steered in the direction of theBluebird Café. While it’s quite difficult toget in, she, her husband and her managermanaged on one night.
“It’s eight songwriters, sitting around atable, and they’ve all got their guitars, andof course their stetson hats and every-thing,” Tyler enthuses.
She ended up working with a few of thesongwriters she had met there.
The new album has a country-rock feel, and though the album leans more towardsrock, there are two country songs present. The one is called,Mom, which tells the story
of a baby speaking to God before being bornand the other is her duet with Vince Gill.
Also on the album are power ballads, likeAll I ever wanted, written by Frank Myers, who also penned the hit, I Swear.
The name of the album comes from a duettitled What you need from Me that Tyler re-corded with Vince Gill.
“I was just honoured that he sang withme, he has such a beautiful voice.”
After hearing the song, a friend of Tyler’scommented that their voices sounded like“rocks and honey” together.
After performing for so long, Tyler saysit’s live performances that keep things ex-citing for her.
“I’ve got a great band, and every weekendwe do a show,” she says.
“I’ll only be doing about four of the newsongs in the show,” Tyler says of her CapeTown performances: “Because everybodyloves to hear the classics.”
“People never get tired of hearing them,”Tyler says of her hits like Lost in France,It’s a Heartache, Holding out for a Hero andTotal Eclipse of the Heart.
Tickets for Bonnie Tyler’s Johannesburgshows are already sold out, and Cape Townisn’t far behind.V Tickets cost between R550 and R640 and are available at Computicket.V Visit www.tygerburger.co.za to listen to Bonnie Tyler’s message for TygerBurger readers.

The mid-point assessment of the city’shome composting study reflects phenome-nal results showing 12,94 tons of organicwaste being diverted from landfill sites infour months. The City of Cape Town’s Home Compost-
ing Study, which began inMarch this year, has now passed its mid-point. So far, a totalof 45 449 litres (12,94 tons) of organic gardenand kitchen waste has been diverted fromlandfill sites. The impressive results of the study were
achieved by 172 regularly participatinghouseholds located across four suburbs. These are Edgemead, Heathfield, Scotts-ville and Bongweni.“The study came about as a result of the
overuse of the city’s landfill sites for gardenand organic waste which can be compostedand re-used. At present, 95 000 tons ofhousehold garden and organic waste and80 000 tons of household kitchenwaste is di-rected to the city’s landfill sites each year,”said the city’s Ernest Sonnenberg.“On average, a household generates ap-
proximately 11 kg of garden and organicwaste and 10 kg of organic kitchen wasteper month.“We are urging residents to get involved
in efforts to reduce waste generation andtry home composting. Every small effortwill help us to reduce damage to our envi-ronment,” said Sonnenberg.

Cape Town’s City Parks Departmentis keeping a close watch on the risinggroundwater table in its cemeteries. The rising groundwater levels are
exacerbated during periods of severestorms or excessively rainy weather– even if it is just for a day or two, amedia release from the City of CapeTown reads.Plans are in place to minimise the
effects of this annual rainy season inthe Western Cape. This may includefamilies needing to sign an accept-ance of limited depth form for burialin their private grave – to allow forthe burial in a slightly shallowergrave. The City Parks Department has al-
so recently provided an above-ground burial system, the MaitlandMausoleum.Furthermore, the new Wal-
lacedene Cemetery (near Kraaifon-tein) is now open for burials andWel-moed Cemetery (in Eerste River) hasbeen extended, with extensive cut-offdrains designed to redirect waterpast the cemetery and to reduce thelikelihood of a high water table re-stricting burial space.Due to religious and cultural pref-
erences, 60 % of Capetonians chooseburial rather than cremation. The highwater table, however, has
an impact on the total number of bur-ials that can take place at any giventime. In shallow, private graves, the lim-
ited depth precludes a second burialon top of the originally buried coffin. The cemetery booking offices are
receiving weekly updates from ceme-tery supervisors on the number ofgraves suitable for burials underthese specific conditions.Under adverse conditions, the
booking officer may suggest thatthere are limited numbers of gravesavailable for Saturday burials.V Enquiries can be directed to the followingbooking offices: Northern District: 021 5288108/09; Southern District: 021 7108235/8325; Central District: 021 4440904/11 or Eastern District: 021 9001676/1902.

Saterdag se program (tuisspan eerste) is:UK t Durbanville/Bellville, Tygerberg t Bel-har, NNK t Valsbaai, Primrose t UWK, Brac-kenfell t Goodwood, Hands & Heart t Kuilsri-vier.

The final of the Engen Knockout Chal-lenge went down to the wire as penal-ties were needed to separate Ajax Cape
Town and ASD Academy on Sunday. The final was the culmination of months
of qualifying matches and over 40 matchesat the weekend, and pitted together two ofthe title favourites.People’s Post is the tournament’s print me-
dia sponsor. The Urban Warriors breezed through the
group stages, quarter-finals and semis witha perfect record as expected, scoring 13 goalsand conceding just one.
AttackASD had a less a comfortable route to the
final, drawing against United FC in thegroup stage and scraping past Bishop Lavison penalties in the semis.
Buoyed by their success in the earlierrounds, Ajax needed no time to settle in thefinal and were in all-out attacking mode assoon as the first whistle sounded.
The defending champions won the mid-field battle and imposed their style of playon the game to take full control and keepASD pinned in their own half.
Ajax regularly got in behind the opposi-tion defence, but couldn’t come up with anaccurate final ball to take the lead.
The second half started as the first had, with Ajax pushing for a breakthrough andASD hesitant to commit numbers to attack.
Though the Urban Warriors continued tolook dangerous, they seldom threatened andfound the opposition keeper up to the taskwhen tested from long range.
PenaltiesNeither team found a goal in the remain-
ing minutes, and, in the end, Ajax won 4-3on penalties, after the match ended in a goal-less draw after regular time, to take theirsixth title in the 10th instalment of the Chal-lenge.
Meanwhile, tournament hosts Santos hada tournament to forget. The People’s Teamfinished sixth overall, after finishing secondin 2012.
Pinelands club Old Mutual Academy fin-ished fifth, Grassy Park’s Crusaders endedseventh and Mitchells Plain side KenparkUnited were eighth. Hanover Park FC fin-ished ninth and Green Point Salesians fin-ished 10th overall.V To view galleries of all the Engen Knockout Challenge action, visit www.peoplespost.co.za.
