This is the breakthrough for resi- dents of the Happy Valley informal settle- ment whose life-long ideal of having their own home will now finally be realised. Bert van Dalen, local ward councillor, says the long awaited and hoped for Happy Valley Housing project kicked off in June and will pro- visionally be completed within two years. The City of Cape Town housing project will complete 1 460 houses (200 of these PHP). The People’s Housing Project will be based upon qualifying for a subsidy. “My hope is that Happy Valley will be a real happy valley and no longer a dumping site for people who can’t be accommodated elsewhere,” said Van Dalen. Appointed contractor for the project is Asla Construction and will feature duplex and free- standing homes. He says homes will also be fit- ted with solar energy panels, including a sepa- rate solar-energy powered lighting system. The two-bedroom 40-square metre homes will be based on the land where the former Happy Valley informal settlement was based. Inhabitants of the settlement were re-located to the area in front of the informal settlement, earlier this year in May, while construction continues. “We first had to obtain permission from them to be able to move them from their former plots, because we can’t move people without their per- mission,” Van Dalen explains. The Happy Valley informal settlement origi- nated when people who were dislocated else- where were moved to this open area, outside Blue Downs. Van Dalen says people are from all over. The informal settlement was prone to flood- ing and many other challenges, caused by the winter rains and cold. “If you look at the circumstances the people have thus far lived in, this project will certainly restore their human dignity.” Van Dalen says the people are generally excit- ed and anxious for their new homes to be com- pleted. “Ninety-nine percent of the people are very happy and want to take ownership of their new homes as soon as possible. People are looking forward to it.” Carmen Cupido, dweller of an informal struc- ture, said about the prospect of living in her own home: “For the past seven years I’ve been living here, it is a bit wet, but we have to be patient. I am very happy about the houses.” Another in- formal resident, Magda van der Vent said: “I feel satisfied that we are going out of the cold, I have no complaints, the homes look beautiful.” ) ) New concrete homes ‘beautiful’ New concrete homes ‘beautiful’ V alley alley bit bit happier happier Bert van Dalen, local ward councillor on the construction site of the Happy Valley Housing Project. Hulle bedank my altyd.”

managing director CathrynTreasure spoke aboutthe importance of events of this nature.“This is another one of our touchpoints and we

want to inspire these students to pursue mathsand science. Today is so importantbecause it gives them the chanceto apply science in a more practi-cal way, away from the class-room,” she said. There were different flavours

and colours thrown in, all addinga touch of the groups’ identities.Bellville High School student,Sharni Gold said: “We made ourspurple and added chocolate chips, but with banana flavour, becauseour parents would want to take ahealthy approach.”The Hip2b2 team all scattered

the floor in science coats with theslogan “Think what you can be”.Treasure says Hip2b2’s broadcastmessage is to encourage childrento pursue science and maths andapply it in everyday life. “The op-portunities are endless,” she says.Winners of the day were IslamiCollege and Worcester Gymnasi-um.

Isolated, cut-off, living in direpovertywithno infrastructure isthe reality for Green Park infor-mal settlement residents.

The settlement alongside the Hin-dle and R300 roads oppositeWesbank in Blue Downs does noteven have electricity, water or thebasic resources. Yet the light intheir dark tunnel is the colourful, fully equipped Hobe Educare Cen-tre where the children of parents,(most of them living below the

breadline), are accommodated dai-ly.

Last week the children of this ed-ucare received a ray of sunlight inthe form of a donation by local Ward19 councillor Cynthia Claasen.

Claasen gave shoe boxes, donatedto her by the Naseem InternationalSchool in Bahrain.

The learners at the school startedthe shoe box project, where a shoebox was filled with necessities forthe young children at the educarecentre.

Claasen, who donated the 13 shoeboxes last week Friday, says the do-

nation forms part of the 67 minutesfor Madiba’s birthday. “The crecheis in my ward and lies very close tomy heart, because of the challeng-ing circumstances they live under, but still they do their best to go on,”said Claasen in answer to why theEducare Centre was selected as re-cipients of the donation.

Educators at the centre are basi-cally working for no money, saysNoxolo Nkohla, principal of the cen-tre, because parents can’t even af-ford the monthly fee of R100.

“We are really struggling here, many parents owe fees since March

this year, but can’t afford to pay us.So we can’t turn the children awayand must see that the children getfood to eat here.”

The daily operational activitiesof the centre have now been takenover by the Truimage Youth Devel-opment, a local NPO who has set upoffice in Green Park and now runscommunity upliftment projectsfrom the premises.

Veronique Ellers-Zoutman, di-rector of Truimage Youth Develop-ment says the organisation has setup office, because of the great needexisting in the area.

They have taken over the run-ning of the creche from Elsabe Ma-rais, founder of the facility. “Thechallenges of the residents here inGreen Park, are: living withoutelectricity and water supply, here isbasically nothing,” says Ellers-Zoutman.

The Hobe Educare was started in2004 and currently has 20 childrenand four educators. Volunteersfrom Truimage also assist at the fa-cility.

Children in Bonteheuwel are packing awaytheir PlayStations this weekend – and shiningup their goene. While the slightly older generation in the

community’s eyes will light up with the localnames for different types of marbles like iro-nies, soudies, and tamaties, it seems like a newgeneration is learning the game with an excit-ing initiative in the community.Ayoungman inBonteheuwelwants to bring

back those carefree days of youth playing safe-ly in the outdoors before X-Boxes and Ninten-do kept them glued to a TV screen.DeanJateshas started theDLJ 100%Human

a similar event is held.“Last year we started with something small

just for the Bonteheuwel area and it was verysuccessful,” he said.“This year’s competition the battle will in-

clude players from Langa, and we are hopingthat it will spread wider.“The competitions will start this Saturday

at the Thusong Centre in Bonteheuwel, andthen alternate with a site in Noxolo Street,Langa, for the next three weeks.”Jates, also an accomplished film maker, re-

vealed thathis plan for the childrenof the com-munity was to give them an insight into howgames like marbles, playing with a top, ken-netjie, and klippetjies (five stones) can be partof their learning experience.“It’s time that they get away from those TV

screens andbecomeactive in games like these, because they are learning about the legaciesand culture of their communities.“These events will also be used as a show-

case for some of the musical talents that wehave within the community so there will belots of entertainment during breaks in thecompetitions. We will also be filming.”TheThusongServiceCentre is on the corner

The Love Bombs film festival will takeplace this week at The Labia on Orange. The Love Bombs project has been a

journey involving more than 250 volun-teerswhogaveup their valuable timeandresources, shot footage all across CapeTown, and worked together over a ninemonth period; all with the sole intentionof changing lives, one film at a time.Three different directors and film

crews, with no initial budget, have creat-ed three short, punchy films, with com-pletely different themes and genres. Each short film is unique; written,

filmed and acted by locals. iBalaclava fol-lows the story of Zolani, a strugglingstreet vendorwho turns to an act of crimeto provide for his younger brother andhimself. The Second Day is set in a post-

apocalyptic prison, where corrupt guardsare entertained by betting on inmates incage fights, until a newly arrived inmatechallenges the ring leader to a deathmatch. The Prodigal follows the story ofa young man who leaves his father’shousehold in pursuit of love and accept-ance, and is soon faced with the realityof his choice: Is this truly what he hasbeen searching for?Every night movie-goers will have the

opportunity to experience all three of theLove Bombs’ short films, and will hearfrom the film makers themselves. The festival runs from 3 to 9 August.

DESIREÉ RORKE

After seven torturous years ofenduring the hellish conse-quences of drug abuse by bothher children, Susan Esterhuizenof Kraaifontein did the unthink-able.

Susan’s two childrenwere only 13and 15 when they started abusingdrugs, and at a very young ageweresent toNoupoort, the first of a seriesof rehabilitation centres. Theyspent 52 months there.“It was a good resting period for

me and I was at peace to know thatat least my children were in a safeplace,” she says.“But after they were released,

things got worse. I tried everythingI could to helpmy children but it allseemed in vain.”After yet another spate in rehab,

again both her children chosedrugs, and consequently moved outof her house to live with other fami-ly members.“At this point they told the world

that I didn’t care, and I didn’t wantthem any more. But this was far re-moved from the truth.“Children who abuse drugs are

out to manipulate their parents, and for a very long time I felt guilt-ridden and emotionally drained. Itried to analyse events to findwhere I went wrong as a parent. Ifelt ashamed of myself.”

As the years passed by both herchildren refused any help and con-tinued theirhabit at the cost of theirfamily life.“My son was involved with car

theft and was charged with the pos-session of a stolen vehicle and spentsix months in custody at GoodwoodPrison. I spent a lot of money to get

him off and save him from a seven-year prison term,” she says.Instead he received a sentence of

two years under house arrest andSusan hoped that he would finallyfind his way.But soon temptation again gave

way and with the help of the prisonwelfare system her son was placed

inDeNovo rehabilitation centre forseven weeks.“When he came out he looked so

good and I was overjoyed. At lastone of my children could be savedfrom the clutches of drugs,” shesays. But again her hopeswere dashed.“This timehewent and livedwith

his long-time girlfriend and theirtwo beautiful children, but verysoon she senthim tomeas she couldnot cope with his drug habits anymore.“Drug addictswill steal fromany-

one to satisfy their craving. Theybecome aggressive and violent andit does not matter what their lovedones do to try and help them it is allfor nothing,” she says.Meanwhile, her daughter also

moved back to her, and between thetwo children they sold almost eve-rything of value in her house. The pressure was mounting and

after a year, which Susan describesof one of the worst of her life, shewas finally forced to resign fromher employment, due to stress.“I could not face life any more, it

was all becoming toomuch forme,”she says. One morning when Susan real-

ised she did not even have moneyleft for food and was facing a realpossibility of losing her house, shedecided enough was enough. With the help of her local police

station she went to the Kuils River

court and applied for a domestic vi-olence interdict against both herchildren.A domestic violence interdict,

otherwise knownas a protection or-der, can be obtained in a magis-trate’s court, free of charge. The abuse mentioned above can

take the form of verbal, physical, fi-nancial or emotional or psychologi-cal abuse and must involve a mem-ber of the household.Once a party is in possession of

such an interdict the police can in-tervene and lock someone up incase of a domestic argument.“After I received it, I warned

them. But two months ago mydaughter again stole something ofmine and I laid a charge againsther. The police caught her withMandrax the next day and she wassent to Pollsmoor..”At the same time her son contin-

uedwithhis abuse andSusandecid-ed to lay a charge against him aswell and he too was sent to prison.“The day had arrived when the

heart of a mother was turned tostone. I realised that I had to dosomething to protectmyself, and re-fused to withdraw the chargesagainst them. My aim is to reachout to communities to face the fastgrowing Third World War – that ofdrug abuse.”Contact Susan to get involved

with her ministry on 078 6744 353 [email protected].

The 14-year-old boy’s frightenedeyes desperately look for comfort. He first notices the inviting

couches and the homely coffee tableonhis left and thena faint smile per-meates through his despair whenhe spots a grand bookshelf stuffedwith age-old knowledge on hisright. For a second the boywants to lose

himself in the books, but he is urgedto follow the group of people mull-ing about him.Everyone apart from his parents

gives him friendly and supportiveglances. He is told that the South African

Children’s Home was the first of itskind in the country, having beenstarted by Margaretha Möller in

1808.There is a growing feeling of hope

for the boy. Besides the warm glowof the staff, every time he staresthrough the window he is comfort-ed by the ever-present Table Moun-tain shepherding him.The group is takenona tour of the

whole facility, which includes adining room, a kitchen, bedroomsand studies. There is even a swim-ming pool, a soccer field and a cou-ple of big screen televisions! He is, however, told that thehome

values reading and sport considera-bly more than watching television. In another room, Sandra Collins,

talks to TygerBurger about thehome, which is registered to accom-modate 44 children between the ag-es of six and 18 years. She has been the manager for six

years, but has been involved withthe home for close to 30 years.“We assess and evaluate each

child individually and then placethem in a school in and aroundCape Town,” she explains. The misperception that children

live indefinitely in a children’shome must be changed, especiallysince the Child Care Act wasamended recently.“Children come here in accord-

ancewitha court order for a shorterperiod and in that time we willwork intensely with the family oforigin. Our focus falls on family re-unification,” continues Collins. If the family set-up isn’t function-

ing properly and the child isn’t ina safe environment then a socialworker will recommend to thecourts to temporarily remove the

child from the family’s care.“We have 12 staff memberswhich

includes a full-time social worker,a fundraiser, an admin person, sev-en child care workers and a chiefchild care worker. We are also veryfortunate to have a multi profes-sional team of volunteers consist-ing of a child psychiatrist, an educa-tional psychologist, occupationaltherapist, an educationalist and amedical doctor.” Meanwhile, some-thing remarkable happened at theend of the tour for the 14-year-oldboy.A visibly enchanted and content-

ed old man walked into the homewith two young children by hisside. As it turned out they were his

grandchildren, whom he wanted toshow where he himself grew up so

many years ago. The 14-year-oldboy blossoms. If anyone would liketo help the SA Children’s Homethey can contact them on021 423 1328 or go to www.sakinder-huis.org.

On 1 September Sanlam andTygerBurgerwill be organisinga “Women’s Day” fundraiserfor the home at Hillcrest inDurbanville. The festivemorn-ing will see various speakerssuch as Dr Wolfgang Riebe de-livering motivational talks. An out-of control house party in-spired by the cult movie Project Xand attended by about 1 000 youths, recently caused pandemonium in aquiet street in Northpine, Kraai-fontein.After a night of chaos and noise,

nearby residents were shocked andoutraged by this new youth fad, andfear that more parties of this kindare in the pipeline. The City of Cape Town, however,

has investigated the incident andwarned youngsters that they will

remain on high alert in case of an-other party in the area.Project X, a comedy film released

inMarch this year, is based ona sto-ry of three friends who plan to gainpopularity by throwing a huge par-ty.In the movie, word of the party

however spreads like wildfire andvery soon it escalates out of theircontrol when hundreds of party-goers fromaround the city arrive atthe house with hair-raising conse-quences.In Cape Town, this movement

very quickly gained a big following

with youths attempting to see whocan create the biggest house party, says Grant Twigg, chairman of theBergdal subcouncil and adds thatnaturally every by-law in the bookwas broken. The invitation which was circu-

lated by email and SMS reads as fol-lows: “Tonight will be epic night toremember. If your up for a ProjectX , .................., Northpine, Bracken-fell, is where youwant to be tonightbtwn 8 and 9.. Over enough parkingfor everyone..bring your friends, and their friends and their friendsfriends.somenigga’swithmorenig-

ga’s who know nigga’s. Bring ownXYZ and other stuff...keep the bc go-ing..so far so good!! ..its a night ofpartying and nontheless *beer*”.“According to our knowledge

news of this party spread across thecity very quickly and young peoplefrom all over arrived in hordes. They ended up partying in thestreet, jamming every single drive-way and blocking traffic. The parkin the street was also used, and eve-rywhere open cars were blaringloud music with youths drinkingand dancing. The next day hun-dreds of bottles were left strewn in

the streets and parks,” he says andadds that the parents of the youthswas out of town over that weekendand not aware of the party.Twigg is adamant that this type

of behaviour is unacceptable in aresidential suburb and last weektold TygerBurger that the city willpull out all the stops to ensure thatthis does not happen again.“I am constantly being updated

with new information of parties be-ing planned. If and when this hap-pens in our area again, we will ar-rest and lock them all up,” hewarned.

lentlessly at helping children, specificallythose from disadvantaged backgrounds, totransform their lives through the mediumof dance, drama and music.Highly acclaimed choreographer and

The streets of Bellville andParow will soon be cleaner andsafer, with the official launch ofthe Voortrekker Road CorridorImprovement District (VRCID)today 1 August.

Derek Bock, chief operations of-ficer of the VRCID, says all plansare in place to tackle crime andgrime head-on.As from today, VRCID levy pay-

ers will be able to contact a securityoperations control room with anysecurity concerns 24 hours a day on072 792 7168.Cape Town’s newest and largest

city improvement district will de-ploy additional cleansing teamsand private security officers withinthe VRCID, mainly along Voor-trekker and Durban Roads.A total of 100 jobs are createdwith

the launch of the VRCID. The day-time, night time and reserve guardsall received specialist training insecurity and cleansing. The VRCIDwill deploy sevenmo-

bile patrol vehicles and 20 security

officers, all clearly branded – sevendays aweek, 24 hours a day. Privatesecurity service provider Orbis Se-curity will also man a 24-hour, sev-en-days-a-week VRCID security op-erations control centre. The VRCID is part of theMayoral

Urban Regeneration Programme oftheCity of CapeTown, led byMayorPatricia de Lille.“It is very important to remem-

ber the VRCID, like all CIDs onlyprovides top up services, over andabove that which the city must sup-ply in terms of urban manage-ment,” said Bock. He said the CIDwas not there to take over the city’sservices.Via its cleansing service provid-

er, the VRCID appointed an addi-tional 15 street cleaners per day,who will sweep and clean thestreets and collect illegal dumping. The VRCID will also coordinatetheir cleansing operations with thecity so as to maximise all staff. In terms of the powers of arrest,

VRCID security officers, like mem-bers of the public, can execute a citi-

zen’s arrest.“If our security officers arrest a

person for theft as an example, pa-trol vehicleswill respond to the spe-cific incident and transport the of-fender to a police station forprocessing,” said Bock.He said this was a clear example

of how the VRCID will support thepolice and how theywished toworkwith them.Bock said he would foster rela-

tions with non-governmental or-ganisationsworkingwithin theVR-CID to address the issue of home-lessness as this goes hand in handwith security.“Homelessness is not a crime but

being homeless does not give anyperson the right to aggressively begor harassmembers of the public, lit-ter or urinate on the streets,” saidBock.“I make an urgent appeal to all

members of the public to please stopgiving to those who beg on thestreets, by giving cash, food or evenclothing – you are responsible forkeeping them on the streets,” he

said.. The 24-hour control room can

SAREL BURGER

Central will look to push Kraaifontein Citycloser to relegation from the Northern Sub-urbs Local Football Association SuperLeague when the teams meet at SymphonyPark inBelharonSundayafternoon, kick-offat 14:00.Central come into the game with a win

over Kalksteenfontein on Saturday, but athree-match unbeaten streak prior to thatvictory demonstrates that Giles Julies’ sideare in good nick as far as form is concerned. That is not something one can say about

Kraaifontein City, who look destined to fallthrough the trapdoor and be relegated to thelower division. They are second last on the league stand-

ings, three points adrift of Wayside Wander-ers who are bottom on the log with fivepoints, and a further four from 14th place oc-cupied by United.

Bellstar United, who looked in danger of be-ing dragged into the relegation mire at onestage this season, haveall but secured their topflight status for next season thanks to a 16-point buffer to the danger zone.BelharSpurswill look to get back towinning

ways when they host Trinitarians at Sympho-

ny Park. kick-off at 15:30.The Erica Park side put together a string

of three straight wins from June into earlyJuly that lifted them out of the danger zoneat the bottom of the table, but taking just onepoint from their last two outings means theyare still very much in danger of being drawn

back into the bottom two. They narrowly lost away to log leaders Riv-

erside Rangers at Avonwood Park. Now theywill look to draw on the determination theyshowed in that game in order to overcomeTrinitarians, a team that is in good form.Trinitarians are placed fifth.

It’s been a long and bumpy road for Ren-ette Bloem but a dream come true to repre-sent South Africa on the grandest stage ofthem all – the Paralympic Games in Lon-don.The blind 48-year-old from Brackenfell

believes she has a realistic chance tomakethe final of her main and favourite event, the 100m breaststroke. The Paralympic Games run from 29 Au-

gust to 9 September at the same venues asthe Olympic Games already in full swing. The South African team can only in-

clude fivemen and fivewomen swimmers.“I’ve always had a love for water and

started swimming at school. I lost interestfor a while and did some serious road run-ning. I like the 10km to 21km range of rac-es.“In 2007 I was back in the pool and ha-

ven’t looked back since.”At the World Championships in 2010

held in Holland, Bloem made the finals ofthe 100m breaststroke placing fourth, showing that she can compete with thebest on the planet.Last yearTurkeyhosted the Internation-

al Blind Sport Federation Championshipswhere Bloemwon silver. She also beat Na-talie du Toit earlier this year in Durban inthe 100m breaststroke, winning Gold.“It’s been very tough, at 48 you have to

manage your body and be aware not toover-train. Currently I practise six days aweek for two to three hours a day. I wakeup at 04:00 to be in the pool by 05:00.“Luckily the gym is basically across the

road for me. Sometimes I go through toStellenbosch as they have a starting blockthat is the same as we will use in London.“I don’t believe I am a given medallist,

but if one is in a final, anything can hap-pen. In 2010 I set the South African recordin the 100 breaststroke at 1.38.67. My otherraces are the 50m and 100m freestyle and200m individual medley.“This will be my last competitive cham-

pionships, so I will give itmy absolute bestto end on a high. Although I am very fo-cused on the job at hand, I can’t wait to gethome after the Games and just lead a nor-mal life.“Preparing for the Paralympics takes

over your whole life,” said Bloem.Few people know that Bloem is family

of the Olympic medallist Ryk Neethling. Renette Bloem is hopeful of a medal at the Paralympic Games.
