Distributed free to all households in Mabe Burnthouse & the surrounding area Issue 45 - Apr/May 2017 University expansion approved More students will be coming to the area – as Cornwall councillors voted to lift the student cap for the Penryn campus of the universities of Exeter and Falmouth. Eight members of Cornwall Council’s strate- gic planning committee voted in favour of the plans to allow the total number of students enrolled to increase by 50% to 7,500. Mabe Parish Council members were dismayed to find that local County Councillor Peter Williams, who did not turn up to the meet- ing, had sent a document to the committee in favour of the increase. This was despite assuring the Parish Council that he would not sup- port any expansion of the university until there was a significant increase in car parking spaces on campus. This turnaround was particularly exasperating, as sev- eral strategic planning members who were uncertain which way to vote, subsequently referred to local members such as Cllr Williams and Penryn’s Cllr Mary May (who both supported the application) as a rea- son for voting in favour of the move. Members of the committee spent two hours debating the issue, and heard many arguments for either side, including Mabe PC’s Barbara Hewett-Silk and Roger Phillips, who both argued passionately against the proposal. In the end, seven councillors voted against the move, stating that Falmouth was “creaking at the seams” and that the local infrastructure could not handle any more students, but a small majority were persuaded that the economic benefits to the local community outweighed the negative impacts that students posed and the application was approved. Mabe man sails the AtlanticOcean single-handed

In July 2016, best friends MaxCampbell and Harry Scott, both20, waved goodbye to their wor-ried mothers and set sail acrossthe English Channel in search ofadventure. With them they car-ried a pair of surfboards, a fold-away bicycle, a guitar and a smallworkshop. They island hoppeddown the west coast of France, across Spain and by October theyhad made it to Portugal. At thatpoint, Harry left to work the skiseason in France and Max madethe brave decision to sail solo tothe Caribbean.

Max began sailing at the age offive and graduated last yearfrom Southampton Universitywith a first class honours degreein Oceanography. Harry, a geolo-gist, left Falmouth with little sail-ing experience, but gainedexperience quickly. Both are verykeen surfers, they have surfedCornwalls south coast since theywere very young.

Whilst in Portugal and with thehelp of his stepdad Dave Cock-well, Max designed and built abespoke self steering gear, an es-sential piece of equipment forsingle-handed yachtsman.

In January 2017, after a 8 daypassage, Max arrived in the Ca-nary Islands. Here he surfedworld class waves before another8 day journey took him to Sal,

Cape Verde and one of theworlds greatest surfing breaks ofPonta Preta.

After a weeks preparation in Min-delo, Sao Vincent's, Max de-parted on his solo passage acrossthe Atlantic Ocean. “It was an un-believable experience. I convoyedwith pods of dolphins anddanced with whales bigger thanmy boat. I saw incredible sunrisesand sunsets, caught tuna andeven cooked the flying fish whichlanded on my deck.” states MaxCampbell, from Eathorne in theParish of Mabe.

After sailing for 19 days and only150, miles off Grenada, Max hitsome rough weather whichcaused an accident with hisparaffin stove. The explosion setMax alight. He reacted quickly,

using the sea to extinguish theflames. In a heroic fashion, usinghis experience from working as aRNLI lifeguard, Max managed toput the fire out on Flying Cloud, treat his burns which coveredmost of his upper torso and sailfor another thirty hours before hereached land.

After a short stay in St GeorgesGeneral hospital, Max has recov-ered enough to celebrate his in-

credible success in style with acoconut and a roti.

“I would like to say a specialthanks to my friends Oli Graffy,Ralf and Henrik and very kindlocal residents Anne and VanHatton and all the staff at StGeorges hospital who providedhave provided me with fan-tastic support since I arrivedhere in Grenada.” saidMax.

Mabe granite bound forBrittany

Carving a giant granite statue ofSt Piran, transporting it fromMabe to Falmouth by tractionengine then having rowers haul itthrough town before it sets sailfor Brittany aboard an old fishingvessel.

This may sound bizarre, but itsthe dream of two Mabe-basedsculptors who are working toraise the profile of traditionalCornish granite while improvingcultural ties between Cornish andBretons.

Cornishman David Paton andBreton Stéphane Rouget havebeen commissioned to create asculpture for the Vallée desSaints, a project which aims tobring together statues of 1,000Breton saints while showing offand encouraging traditionalgranite working techniques.

The carving will begin in earnestduring Cornwall Open Studios inMay, when the public will be ableto see the sculptors at work atTrenoweth Quarry, where theyhave been given space to workby quarry operator Tim Marsh, who has also sold them his "bestslab of granite."

David said: "The thing that we'rereally interested in is the publicengagement side of the project.

"There is great publicity on theFrench side for the sculptors, and

the workshops are open to thepublic, and we're really keen forthat to happen here.

"We want people to engage withthe process of quarrying granite, the quarry, and the heritage ofgranite in Cornwall."

Can you help us care forTinkerbelle and her friends?

It has been another tough winterfor Flicka, with months of coldweather and an unprecedentednumber of rescues, but when wewere recently asked to take agroup of four donkeys and mulesafter their elderly owners couldno longer care for them, we justcouldn't turn them away...

One of our new arrivals is tinyTinkerbelle, the miniature mule. She has ‘dwarfism’ which sadlybrings with it some congenitalphysical abnormalities, such asvery short legs and a misalignedjaw. Unfortunately her mouth istoo small for her teeth, so shewill require regular dental check-ups and work on her teeth. De-spite her problems, Tinkerbelle isvery sweet and friendly girl.

As with every new arrival, Tinker-belle and her friends Dominic,Donald and Coco require a vet-erinary check-up (including fullblood and faecal screening) toassess their health, as well as vis-its from the farrier and equinedentist, important vaccinationsand treatment for parasites.

This is estimated to cost around£450 per animal, at a total of£1800.

Winter really is our toughest timeof year. Although the days arenow getting longer, the freezingweather means that the donkeys

and horses still require extra feedto keep them warm, fit andhealthy and this usually contin-ues until at least April.

With another 4 hungry mouths tofeed on top of the upcoming, ex-pensive veterinary care bills forTinkerbelle and her friends, wereally need your help.

We urgently need to raise thefunds to help us through the nextcouple of months, please can youhelp to change that by donatingto our Winter Appeal today?

www.justgiving.com/cam-paigns/charity/flicka-foun-dation/winterappeal

We currently have over 70 don-keys and 30 horses at our sanctu-ary and we cannot care for themwithout your generous support.

Please donate to help us care forTinkerbelle and her friends - theyreally need you. Thank you.

Tinkerbelle’s dwarfism means she re-quires regular trips to the vet

New Zealand treasures atGarden Club

Almost 50 people attended Feb-ruary’s meeting to hear JohnLanyon’s talk on “New ZealandTreasures”.

John has been a regular guestspeaker at the Club over theyears and always delights mem-bers with a different subject.

This year he delivered a particu-larly passionate talk about one ofthe world‘s mightiest trees - thekauri (Agathis Australis) whichcan grow to over 50m tall withtrunk girths of up to 16m and livefor over 2,000 years.

This magnificent tree is particu-larly associated with New

Zealand, although they do growin other warm countries such asMalaysia.

John’s fascination with this par-ticular species dates back manyyears when he happened across abook about them. The book, longtreasured and regularly read, isnow a little dog-eared but itspawned within John a burningambition to see kauris and othernative New Zealand plants firsthand.

After many years of anticipation, his ambition finally became a re-ality when he travelled to NewZealand for the trip of a lifetime.

Quite apart from the kauri, hehad some other plants on his‘wish list’ - particularly some vari-eties of native ferns which num-ber around 200.

Kauri trees are conifers but be-have like hardwood and providefirst rate timber. After centuriesof forest decimation by Maorisand European settlers who val-ued the wood for boat and housebuilding and also for resin andgum, kauris are now largely pro-tected, though they are mostlyonly to be found in the northerndistricts of North Island.

John showed photos of treestaken in a kauri forest with hisparents beside them looking likeThe Borrowers by comparison.

When John managed to tearhimself away from the actualKauri’s can grow to over 50m in height

and 16m in girth

trees, he visited the Kauri Mu-seum to learn more about themand showed images from insidethe museum including some hair-raising video footage of men onearly model bulldozers racingalong land they had cleared offorest to provide farmland.

John had expected other plantson his wish list to be elusive butto his surprise he spotted quite afew in easy to access spots byroadsides.

Black tree ferns (Cyatheamedullaris), he considers to bethe ultimate temperate tree fern.Ladder ferns grow like bracken inpatches, and he came across

some tiny filmy ferns (genus: Hy-menophyllum) in a small natu-ralised plantation with tea trees. With delight, he found one of therarest of all - the kidney fernwhich grows only in New

Zealand.

Others ticked off were: Schefflera;Sophora Microphylla (common

name kowhai); ficus macrophylla;and rare climbing ferns.

Amongst many highlights on histrip, John visited AucklandBotanic Gardens, which withmore than 10,000 beautiful andfascinating plants, is a gardener'snirvana. The Gardens also hassome plants close to extinctionbeing preserved there.

John’s enthusiasm for his subjectcarried his audience along and itwas with no little regret that histalk came to an end.

A vote of thanks for so gener-ously sharing his long held ambi-tion to see a kauri and otherplants unique to New Zealandwas given by Val Bidgood andfollowed by prolonged applause. To round out a most enjoyableevening, light refreshments wereserved. Sue Mitchell

The intensity of the game in-creased in the second half withmore chances being created.Matt Noonan pulled off a greatstop from a Mossop shot.
