Dream of Venice is an intimate photographic portrait intercut with telling comments by contemporary Venice MHUZ��YHUNPUN�MYVT�ÄST�THRLYZ�[V�MHTV\Z�=LUL[PHUZ��such as glassmaker Giampaolo Seguso. Woody Allen, one lifelong fan, wears his heart on his sleeve in the book: “The minute I set eyes on Venice I fell in love with it. I got married in Venice, I sang in a movie in Venice, and I’ve had the pleasure of getting lost a hundred times walking in the streets.” Hollywood photographer Charles Christopher was inspired by the dark psychological thriller Don’t Look Now, which chimed with his vision of Venice on the page: “I could go down any dark alley I wanted to and have space for myself to explore and not rush; in life, it seems we’re always rushing.”

The absence of cars gives a peaceful quality to the city, and our bodies relax into a different rhythm.” Underpinning the watery calm is a sense of wonder that Venice ever came into being. For this former lagoon resident, it is almost a miracle: “I believe that Venice was not actually built from wood pilings but from the human imagination. How else could one even envision a city like Venice if it was not born of the suspension of reality? There is a beauty to Venice that beguiles the brain; it is the combination of shadows, light, stones and silence. Where else can the improbable reside, except in your imagination?”
Dream of Venice Architecture, the companion volume, faced overfamiliarity as its greatest challenge. How can you photograph the world’s most photographed city? Venice so clearly belongs to us all that carving out a private version feels daunting. =LUL[V�IHZLK�WOV[VNYHWOLY�HUK�ÄST�THRLY�9PJJHYKV�De Cal has risen to the challenge, “trying to avoid picture-postcards”. Given his cinematic background, +L�*HS�HKTP[Z�[V�SL[[PUN�ÄST�YH[OLY�[OHU�WOV[VNYHWO`�guide his vision: “I loved Visconti’s Death in Venice – from the Thomas Mann novel – so maybe I connected with that sort of atmosphere.” His aim was to conjure up “an eternal city, steeped only in its millennial history”. The photographer’s architectural training also helped his eye to focus on elemental Venice and the lagoon city’s distinctive blueprint: “There are no straight lines in Venice: everything is slanted along three axes.”

La calma data dalla presenza dell’acqua dà l’impressione che Venezia sia sempre esistita. Venezia ci appartiene così tanto che ritagliarsene una versione privata è scoraggiante. Il fotografo e cineasta veneto Riccardo De Cal ha raccolto SH�ZÄKH��¸JLYJHUKV�KP�L]P[HYL�SL�MV[V�KH�JHY[VSPUH¹��*VUZPKLYHUKV�PS�Z\V�IHJRNYV\UK�JPULTH[VNYHÄJV��+L�*HS�HTTL[[L�KP�SHZJPHYL�JOL�PS�JPULTH�L�SH�MV[VNYHÄH�guidino il proprio sguardo: “Ho amato ‘Morte a Venezia’ di Visconti – dal romanzo di Thomas Mann – quindi forse mi sono collegato a quella atmosfera.” Il suo obiettivo era quello di evocare “una città eterna, immersa solo nella sua storia millenaria”. La formazione in architettura da parte del fotografo lo ha pure aiutato a

concentrarsi sulla Venezia degli elementi e sul progetto distintivo della città lagunare: “Non ci sono linee rette a Venezia: tutto è inclinato lungo tre assi.”
Dedicato “ai veneziani, del passato, del presente e del futuro”, il libro non è un asciutto trattato di architettura ma una supplica velata per la salvaguardia della città. Famosi architetti contemporanei come 4HYPV�)V[[H�L�;HKHV�(UKV��JOL�OHUUV�YLHSPaaH[V�LKPÄJP�e costruzioni a Venezia, raccontano la loro personale relazione artistica con la città. E’ un preludio per noi che cerchiamo più ampie lezioni di vita. Secondo Locktov, Venezia può insegnarci come “armonizzare l’architettura con la natura, il design con la seduzione, rispettare l’artigianato, amare l’innovazione e accettare la contraddizione”. I libri Dream fanno riecheggiare la sensazione di coinvolgimento con la città viva, al di là della cartolina. Come dice l’editore: “Ho preso la decisione di lavorare con scrittori contemporanei perché ritengo che per noi sia importante rispettare la città, dobbiamo sentire che la città è rilevante per le nostre vite.”
Eppure quello che è la nostalgica capsula del tempo per una persona, può rappresentare un appariscente parco tematico per un’altra. Prima di dilettarci nel declino romantico di Venezia, dobbiamo ricordare che molta gente del posto sta andando via, tagliata fuori
Dedicated to “the Venetians, past, present and future”, the book is no dry architectural treatise but a subtle plea for the city’s salvation. Famous contemporary architects such as Mario Botta and Tadao Ando, who have built in Venice, relate their personal artistic relationship with the city. This is a prelude to us looking for broader lessons in living. According to Locktov, Venice can teach us how to “harmonise architecture with nature, design for seduction, respect craftsmanship, cherish innovation, and embrace contradiction”. The Dream books echo this feeling of engagement with the living city beyond the postcard. As the publisher says: “I made the decision to work with contemporary writers because I feel that for us to respect a city, we must feel that the city is relevant to our lives.”
Yet one person’s nostalgic time capsule is another’s tawdry theme park. Before revelling in Venice’s romantic decline, we need to remember that many locals are leaving, edged out by mass tourism and rising rents. In Calvino’s Invisible Cities, Marco Polo describes the essence of Venice, his native city, to the mighty Kublai Khan: “Without stones there is no arch.” “And without Venetians, there will be no Venice,” adds JoAnn Locktov, pointedly. “How can we, the people who are privileged to cross your bridges in our lifetime, help stop the exodus?”

Dream of Venice in Black and White, due this autumn, should take Venice-lovers on another magical mystery voyage. Luckily, Tiziano Scarpa, its celebrated Venetian author, lives by the maxim that “getting lost is the only place worth going to”.
