“O-SO-SPECIAL” Blood Donors NeededIt’s a fact: our emergency rooms are using more and more type-O blood each year.
That’s because type-O negative blood can be transfused to patients with other blood types. In many emergency situations, hospitals must use type-O blood until the patient is stabilized and blood type is determined.
United Blood Services, the area’s nonprofit community blood provider, is particularly concerned about attracting new donors with type-O blood and giving current type-O donors opportunities to donate three or four times a year. According to Beth-Anne Ferley, Donor Recruitment Director of United Blood Services, transfusions of certain types do not always match the percentage of people in the population who have that type. “And that’s where the special type-O donors play an important role,” she said. “They are kind of like everything to everybody!”
If you are an old O donor who hasn’t given in a while, or a new donor who would like to try it for the first time, United Blood Services encourages you to come to a blood drive in your area. Don’t know your blood type? “You can easily find it out,” said Beth-Anne. “Once you’ve made your donation, you can log in to www.bloodhero.com and learn your blood type, along with other health information like the free cholesterol reading you’ll receive when you donate. You might just be one of those oh-so-special O’s.”

What You Need4 eggs1/2 c diced ham1/2 c shredded four cheese Mexican cheese2 tbsp butter2 large mangoes, diced2 medium tomatoes, diced2 tbsp sweet onions, diced1/2 jalapeno pepper, minced2 tbsp cilantro, chopped2 tbsp fresh lime juice1/2 tsp taco seasoning mix
Directions• Prepare mango salsa by
dicing mangoes, tomatoes and onions. Mince jalapeno and chop cilantro. Place in a bowl.
• Pour in lime juice and add taco seasoning. Stir until all

ingredients are mixed together and coated. (Mango salsa can be made up to a day ahead.)
• Scramble eggs and dice ham. Heat omelet skillet with butter. When skillet is hot, add enough egg to cover bottom of skillet. When the egg mixture is almost firm yet still somewhat runny, flip omelet over. (This will make the omelet fluffy.)
• Load one side of egg mixture with diced ham and shredded cheese. Fold egg over. Let heat through and then place on plate.
• Cover omelet with mango salsa. Sprinkle with extra shredded cheese. Salt and pepper to taste, and enjoy!

SafetyMardi Gras has always been a night

In addition to a designated driver, keep the local cab company’s phone number nearby should a guest need a ride while the designated driver is driving someone else home.
Another safety measure is to make sure guests have alternatives to alcohol at their disposal. If alcohol is being served, make sure there’s also soda, coffee, tea, and other beverages on hand, as well as plenty of snacks for guests who might still be hungry after dinner has been served.
