Beverly Ballard Major A1 Williams. veteran speed flier from Pittsburgh. Pa., walked away from his burning converted Navy fighter plane Tuesday after- noon unhurt, although the F8F Bearcat was completely demolish- J i'd. Williams came in on an East wind to land at Simmons-Nott air- port near New Bern at 1430 Tues- day after being turned about by ad- verse weather conditions near j Elizabeth City. The noted veteran of both Naval uud Marine aviation was enroute from Palm Beach. Fia., to New York and had flown over New Bern less than 2u minutes prior to the crash, lie blamed the crash on a landing gear failure, adding that either his left wheel "failed to come down" or collapsed when the Bearcat hit the runway. The pilot further said that his wheel indicators were in position but when his ship hit the runway the left wing dipped on that side. The plane sagged to the point where the belly tank scraped along the runway, igniting the gasoline. The tank exploded and Major Williams was completely sur- rounded by flames. He leaped through the flar£les / to the runwaj and got away from the plane. Fire- men from nearby New Bern rushed lo the scene but, were unable to ,ave any part of the plane. It was ompletely demolished. For the past few year6. Major Williams has been sales manager tor the Gulf Gasoiine company and >j»ent some time in Naval aviation right after World War I. He then went into civilian aviation and after a shory period of time, he went back into the military avia 'on branch but this time in Ma'- : ;ne Corps Aviation. One of many of Major Williams .n hiyvements in his lengthy avia- ' ion career was a speed record he -' at Mitchell Field. Lonn Island, N Y.. ,in 1922. The speed record "as in effect for eight years. Expiration Dates for License Plates Are Given by State Motor Vehicle Department The State Department of Motor Vehicles Yesterday released informa- tion regarding expiration dates for license plates. Information was from all states and was gleaned from telegraphic reports The Depart- ment warned that persons with invalid plates would be subject to court action and urged all automobile owners to avoid last-minute rushes in acquiring new plates. Owners may operate with expired plates until new ones are received if current fees have been paid. Valid evidence of such payment—receipt, correspondence, money order stub, etc., mu6t be presented as proof.
