Saint of the Week Ignatius Loyola, Priest, 1491-1556

Ignatius of Loyola, venerated as Saint Ignatius of Loyola, was a Spanish Basque Catholic priest and theologian. Ignatius' message today: The Jesuits today run many high schools and uni-versities, which are known for high standards of education. While teaching the broadest range of subject matter, these institutions focus much time and energy in teaching about the Church.

St. Ignatius taught 14 Rules for Discernment of Spirits. These rules contain valuable practical wisdom.

PRESENCE: PHYSICAL VS. VIRTUAL “For you have made the whole world a temple of your glory, that your name might everywhere be extolled, yet you allow us to consecrate to you apt places for the divine mysteries. And so, we dedicate joyfully to

your majesty this house of prayer, built by human labor. Here is foreshadowed the mystery of the true Temple, here is prefigured the heavenly Jerusalem.”

— Roman Missal, Preface for the Dedication for a Church

Presence: Physical vs. Virtual The following is reprinted as an abridged version of an article for the Catho-lic Telegraph on the difference between physical and virtual presence: “It’s not perfect, but we are doing our best to make it work.” The bride-to-

be was doing her best to appear cheerful during the marriage preparation meeting with her fiancé and me. The meeting was over Zoom, not because of the pandemic, but because all three of us were in different states. The couple had spent most of their engagement separated by a ten-hour drive and were working hard to navigate the difficulties of a long-distance engagement. They faithfully texted each other throughout the day and never missed their video call each evening, the only opportunity they had to see each other “face-to-face.”

But while virtual communication was necessary and even a great gift, both of them agreed that the situa-tion was putting a strain on their relationship. Virtual presence was not enough and was a poor substitute for the real presence of the other.

Anyone who has attempted to maintain a long-distance relationship can sympathize with this couple’s longing to be together, especially as they prepare for marriage. Even as a celibate priest, I am frequently moved by the beauty of spousal love, which the Scriptures frequently use as a metaphor for the relationship between God and His people. John the Baptist and Jesus himself refer to Jesus as the bridegroom (Jn 3:29; Mk 2:19), and heaven is described as a wedding feast (Rev 19:9).

We must never lose sight of the remarkable truth that Jesus is calling each of us to a relationship with Him that resembles marriage. At every Mass, we have the opportunity to enter into this spousal relationship. Jesus offers Himself wholly to us in the Eucharist, which is Jesus Christ himself – Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity (CCC 1374). For our part, we have the opportunity to receive this total gift of Jesus himself into our bodies, and, in this reception, to give ourselves wholly back to Him.

I was happy to see the excited children at Vacation Bible School last week! Participants and their children were able to meet Fr. Hoffmann as well. I encourage you to participate in a discussion group for Radiate Christ. Fr. Hoffmann will lead two in-person groups, and I will lead an online group. We hope to have a few additional options as well. What a joy to know, love, and serve the good God.

RADIATE CHRIST: Archbishop Dennis Schnurr’s Pastoral letter is a call to us to carry the faith into the future. It is an invitation to allow Christ Jesus to lead us to peace, joy, and fullness of life. How do we do it? How do we get there? How do we enable Him to shine in and through us? Join in a discussion. Please contact Mary Ann Williams to register for one of our discussion groups:

Monday 7-8pm begins July 19

Thursdays 1:15-2:15pm begins July 22

Friday (Zoom) 3-4:15pm begins July 23 (Each week begins w/chaplet of Divine Mercy)

Wednesdays 7-8pm begins August 4 (after Fr. Mike concludes series on the Eucharist)

When multiple candles are brought together the light is increased. By discuss-ing together our light, too, becomes brighter.

The Word became flesh; Jesus is not simply an idea, but a physical reality.

Pastoral Region

PREP – Pastoral Region Religious Education Program - Catholic Faith Formation is provided by catechists who are on fire with the love of Christ. On Sunday mornings we gather in the Fenmont Activity Building, September thru April each year. Children in grades K – 12 have classes that provide information and experiences to further their relationship with God. Sacramental preparation occurs for two years for First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion and Confirmation. Confirmation is celebrated every other year in our Pastoral Region. Our next Confirmation will be in 2023. We want children to learn about God every year, not just the year prior to a sacra-ment. Parents, Godparents, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, and friends are encouraged to enroll their children in PREP. Registration forms are at the main entrance to each church and online at www.stjulie.net . Let PREP help you to pass on the Catholic Faith! Turn your forms in now and help us prepare for next year!

St. Joseph open hours for prayer Our church buildings are meant to serve our local communities as images of the universal Church, as tangible signs of God’s presence and love. In order to make sure that they occupy this important place in every commu-nity, Canon 937 of the Code of Canon Law exhorts pastors that “unless there is a grave reason to the contrary, the church in which the Most Holy Eucharist is reserved is to be open to the faithful for at least some hours every day so that they can pray before the Most Blessed Sacrament.” Though it is not practical to open St. Joseph every day, we are looking for volunteer “guardians” to be on hand while the church is open several hours every week. Our tentative plan is for open hours to take place from 4-6 pm one evening per week. Please contact Fr. Hoffmann ([email protected], or (513) 863-1040, ext. *814) if you are interested in serving the Lord in this way.

THE MASS: UNDERSTANDING LEADS TO BETTER PRAYER Fr. Mike Pucke is offering a three part mini course on the Eucharist on Wednesday evenings July 14, 21, and 28 at 7:00 - 8:30 PM in the Fenmont (enter diagonally across from church). The purpose is to help you --better pray the Mass. It will be based on two of the most fundamen-tal documents of the Church: The Constitution on the Liturgy of the Second Vatican Council and The General Instruction of the Roman Missal, the “instruction book” for the how and why of celebrating Mass. We will be sure to allow ample time for questions and observations.

While there is some continuity from week to week, each session stands on its own.

July 14: The history of the Mass and a general orienta-tion from the two documents July 21: Parts of the Mass July 28: Emphasis on the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Insights of Saints Paul VI and John Paul II

RCIA: Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

The church ritual process of RCIA calls adults to a conver-sion of mind and heart and prepares them for a full and active life in the Church as disciples of Jesus.

The culmination of that ritual process is the celebration of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharis-tic in the Easter Vigil.

For whom is RCIA intended?

For those who are unbaptized and preparing for sara-ments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharistic.

For those who are already Baptized but may be preparing for a profession of faith and full communion within the Roman Catholic Church.

We start in August

Pastoral Regional

ayudaron.

Padre Rob
