THE EDUCATOR’S GUIDE

More than you can imagine. What can your students learn from carrying a heavy backpack along the Superior Hiking Trail, portaging through the Boundary Waters, trying to locate a campsite at night, or building a shelter when it is raining? They can discover that there is more in them than they ever thought possible—a realization that will change the student returning to your classroom.

Since our creation in 1963, Voyageur Outward Bound School has led thousands of students into the wilderness and to the streets of the Twin Cities to experience education in a non-traditional setting. Giving your students the opportunity to face challenges in these settings allows them to develop their ability to lead, discover the strength of their character, and realize a determination to make a difference in the community around them.

Our proven education model focuses on learning THROUGH rather than FOR expedition, because outdoor expedition challenges are the perfect metaphor for life challenges: “If I can overcome the challenge of that portage, I can do difficult things at home, too.” Suddenly, more is possible. Come and see how we can unlock your student’s potential.

Philosophy.Outward Bound is an international education movement dedicated to the idea that people are capable of far more than they know. Our programs help people discover transferable skills—like the strength of their character, an ability to lead, and a determination to serve their community—all with newfound confidence. These skills are strong predictors of success in school and home.

This is no ordinary camping trip; it’s a journey with a purpose. We create experiences that extend far beyond the course, and leverage the power of symbolic “mountaintop” moments. Pairing Outward Bound experiences with a student's classroom experience educates the whole person, catapulting them towards success.

Our courses utilize a progression of leadership and responsibility, tooling students for success in other challenging life circumstances. Our course progression:

Transformative Experience. It's not just about the thrills. A zip-line is not a life-changing experience on its own. But a program designed to develop character through deliberate challenges by some of the world's greatest experiential educators certainly is. We strive to work in close partnership with schools and organizations, so that the experience can be holistically integrated in the curriculum and program design.

Each Voyageur Outward Bound School experience is individually tailored to meet your goals. Participants learn the skills to orient their futures and their roles in the world. Perseverance, creativity, compassion, confidence and critical thinking cannot be learned only in the classroom. These skills are learned through experience — experience that we provide.

Adventure that Matters. We are different than other outdoor organizations. Your students won't just go on a trip. They will be on an expedition. They will be crew members, not passengers. This results in gained confidence by solving real problems, leading their peers, extending a hand of support to other crew members and attaining goals they set. We give your students a trip filled with memories—and more importantly, skills—they can take back home and glean for the rest of their life.

Our instructors are our greatest asset — they are highly trained experiential educators and outdoor professionals. All instructors are Wilderness First Responders (WFR). This isn’t just outdoor first aid; acquiring the WFR certification takes 80 hours. This certification is recognized by medical professionals worldwide. Additionally, we require all of our staff to pass state and federal background checks.

We hire experienced staff from a highly competitive pool and then build on their knowledge base. All courses are staffed with a Lead Instructor and an Assistant Instructor. Becoming a Lead Instructor requires many seasons of course leading and demonstrating consistent decision making skills, exceptional judgement, and extensive annual training.

Poppy is an educator at heart. She is passionate about helping people discover the confidence needed to achieve their dreams. As an experi-ential educator of 25 years, she’s worked for many youth serving organizations and held a teaching position in St. Paul for 10 years. Poppy holds a BS in Outdoor Recreation from UW La Crosse, a Master’s of Science in Experiential Education from Minnesota State University - Mankato and a Special Education Teaching License from Bethel University. Earlier in her career she served VOBS as an instructor and course director, and now serves as the Director of Operations in our Twin Cities Center. She works hard to establish program partnerships with schools and organizations to create a collaborative strategy, resulting in real change.

Poppy PotterJasper Hunt’s involvement in experiential education began in 1969 when he took an Outward Bound course. That course sparked his professional career, and in 1970 he joined the Sherpa training program directed by Karl Rohnke. He’s worked for Northwest Outward School, the Darrow Hall “Operation Breakout” Juvenile delinquency Program, and most recently, Voyageur Outward Bound School. Since 1983 he’s influenced the field of experi-ential education as a Professor at Minnesota State University-Mankato. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he studied educational theory and philosophy. One of his proudest accomplishments is starting the University’s Adventure Education Program where he served as the founding Director for 25 years. He has an extensive scholarly record and has done work on theoretical and professional ethics, risk management, character education, philosophy of education, environmental ethics, leadership theory and practice, and theology.

Jasper HuntA Minnesota native, James grew up loving the outdoors, exploring any woods he could find; always with a trusty stick in his hand and a cape on his back. He has been working in outdoor education for 14 years, first as wilderness guide for Colorado College and the YMCA. Though he earned a BA in biology from Colorado College, his extracurricular pursuits are what landed him his first job after graduation as the Program Director for the college’s outdoor program. In 2006 James started working with Outward Bound, working in Montana and Colorado before returning to his Minnesota roots as the Associate Program Director at our Twin Cities Center. James believes deeply in the transfor-mative power of wilderness expeditions, and has logged many weeks paddling whitewater and snowboarding in the backcountry. Back in civilization, James loves listening to music, photography, writing, filmmaking, exploring restaurants, and playing soccer.

A small-town gal from Southeast Wisconsin, Mollie grew up discovering the forest behind her childhood home, climbing trees, catching toads and counting satellites. She had a healthy imagination and a knack for storytell-ing, always dragging her older sister on backyard camp-outs and writing tales of their adventures. Guided by curiosity, Mollie developed a love for conservation literature and a stong connection to the natural world that led her to pursue a Bachelor's in Environ-mental Science, Policy and Management. While enrolled at the University of Minnesota, Mollie spent time on campus and abroad mobilizing communities to take small steps toward a sustainable future. After graduating, she led experiential education courses for internation-al students and outdoor adventure programs for various populations. She joined the VOBS instructor team "to serve, to strive and not to yield" and empower others to do the same.

Mollie ThompsonBud’s first taste of Outward Bound was as a teenager when he graduated from a 22-day course in Baltimore. That experience helped steer him to Ohio University and a degree in Adventure Recreation. Through his work as a wild land firefighter in California and an EMT-B in Cincinnati, he has rescued men from a wrecked helicopter in a burning forest, cleareda baby’s airway, and worked hard to change people’s lives. Bud came to VOBS on an 8-day dogsled course. Bud recalls, “as we rounded the first corner on the frozen river a bald eagle flew overhead, our dog team trudged through the snow, and I instantly fell in love with the beauty of the Boundary Waters.” That was 2010 and Bud has been here ever since doing everything from instructing courses to training sled dogs. In his downtime Bud enjoys disc golf, photogra-phy, mountain biking, ski-jouring, kite boarding and canoeing, and anything else that keeps him outside and moving.

Bud AhernsAlisa grew up in Minneapolis and didn't discover the wilderness until she was 21 on a canoe trip in the Boundary Waters. Little to say, she took a roundabout journey to return to the same wilderness as an instructor with VOBS. After earning her Bachelors in Social Work she set off on a bicycle trip along the 2,300 miles of the Mississippi River and published a book about her journey. The lessons of the road inspired her to influence young lives with the Montana Conservation Corps as a Youth Crew Leader. With VOBS, she continues to work with youth, handle sled dogs on a rustic homestead in the North-woods, and lead canoe and dogsled expeditions. She holds Master’s Degree in Experiential Education.

Page 32: Voyageur Outward Bound School I Educators Guide

How is safety demonstrated?Outward Bound has been instructing expeditions for 50 years in Minnesota. We are a network of schools that run annual safety audits and reviews. We are certified by our national safety depart-ment which is internationally renowned for Wilderness Risk Management and Safety. Every instructor must be Wilderness First Responder medically certified and trained in Student Management Skills, Multi-Cultural Competency, and Instructor Judgement. Besides knowing how to respond in the case of an emergency, we proactively strive to prevent emergencies from occurring.

Why Outward Bound instead of other similar programs?Simply put, Outward Bound is the ORIGINAL experientially-based character development program. Our program and its educational components were born out of the necessity to prepare young people for the challenges of life, without which one would face dire conse-quences. Today’s world parallels this reality in many ways. Outward Bound training translates into more capable and resilient young people, and the most well trained adults guide students through the solid foundation of experience. When students face and overcome the challenges inherent on an Outward Bound course, they are then unable to settle for less than their best self.

Will the students have cell phones?NO. The students will be in the next best environment to their family or school. They will have two (or more) supportive and responsible instructors as well as a peer group. Additionally, the instructors carry emergency phones. Each student will be a supportive member of a team, some days a leader, some days a navigator or cook, but every day they will be growing. We believe that ‘no news is good news’ because that means the students are immersed in their surroundings and with the task at hand. They are learning and growing through experience–which is a priceless opportunity.

What will my students be learningand doing?Outward Bound’s Educational Framework uses challenge and adventure to allow people to learn through experience. A supportive environment of peers and instructors make it okay to try new things, to speak your mind, to listen, and to be heard – all elements of todays most successful leaders. We value compassion, integrity, excellence in craft, inclusion, and diversity, and we teach through these ideals. Your student will return having practiced the skills of a leader, and they will know their strengths and areas for growth.

Why does it take 5 days to build leader-ship and self-confidence?Like any great art, leadership must be practiced. The more practice the better the performance. We have longer expeditions if you are interested!

How can I help prepare my studentsand their families?Be excited for them! They have an amazing opportunity ahead of them. Outward Bound is an excellent addition to college applications and resumes because it is generally understood that it takes a very strong person to complete an expedition. They CAN do this course and WILL be successful. We will help deliver an informative parent/guardian session where all necessary information is covered in detail.

Why schools love us.“As an educator, my exposure to the expeditionary learning experience has confirmed my belief in the power of relevant challenges followed by reflective processing.I hope to apply the concept of expedition to every lesson plan and professional development experience.”

“Outward Bound brings together collaboration with ways to address deep cultural issues to make K-12 education better. The group facilitators were outstanding. Their inner calm and patience coupled with deep self-assurance was inspiring and engaging.”
