Cleveland State, along with Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Norfolk State. The Colonials also made it to the championship game in the Best Western Roundball Classic before falling to Big East opponent and tournament host South Florida, a 2006 NCAA Tournament team. During the 2004-05 season, the Colonials posted victories over Mid-American teams Akron and Marshall, along with Atlantic-10 member and cross-town rival Duquesne. In ad-dition, Robert Morris beat St. Francis (Pa.), Mount St. Mary’s, and Monmouth. Prior to his arrival the team had 16, 15, and 13-game losing streaks, respectively, against those teams. Before Robert Morris, Buscaglia spent five seasons at Manhattan College (1998-2003). In just his second season at Manhattan, Buscaglia led the Lady Jaspers to a 17-win season, marking the fifth most victories in school history, and was rec-ognized as the 24th most improved team in NCAA Division I. In five seasons at Manhattan, Buscaglia compiled a record of 79-65, including a 20-10 record and NCAA Division I tournament appearance in 2002-03. Buscaglia’s Manhattan team received votes in the Top 25 in 2002-03 as the Jaspers claimed the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships. The MAAC championship in 2003 was the first league title in school history. Manhattan’s 20-10 overall record was also the best in school history. In 2001-02 he guided the jaspers to an 18-10 overall record and was named the Co-Coach of the Year in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. For eight seasons prior to his arrival at Manhattan, Busca-glia was head coach of the University at Buffalo from 1990-98 and led the Bulls to five 20-win campaigns. In its first season in Division I competition in 1991-92, Buffalo finished with a 23-6 record, which was the 10th highest winning percentage (.793) in Division I that season. The Bulls won East Coast Conference regular season titles in 1992, 1993 and 1994, as well as tourna-ment championships in 1992 and 1994. In 1994-95, Buffalo moved to the Mid-Continent Conference and Buscaglia led the Bulls to a share of the Mid-Con regular-season title in 1995 and an appearance in the conference tour-nament finals in 1997. In each of Buffalo’s first three seasons in the Mid-Con, Buscaglia led the Bulls to at least 20 wins. For his efforts at Buffalo, Buscaglia earned New York State Coach of the Year honors in 1992 and 1996. Buscaglia started his coaching career at Hilbert Junior Col-lege, in Hamburg, New York, where in 12 seasons from 1977-90 he amassed a record of 249-62. During his tenure at Hilbert, his teams collected 93 straight league wins, eight straight Region Tournament Championships (1982-90), eight straight regular season conference championships (1982-90) and eight straight National Tournament appearances (1982-90). In 1988-89 his team finished in the elite eight. Coach Sal is a member of the Hilbert College Hall of Fame. Buscaglia’s squad reached the National Junior College Ath-letic Association National Tournament eight straight seasons from 1982-83 to 1989-90, with the 1889-90 team reaching the NJCAA National Tournament final six. He is a member of the Hilbert College Hall of Fame. Buscaglia also has coaching experience with USA Basket-ball, having served as an assistant coach at the 1992 Summer Olympic Festival and as a Trial Coach at the 1989 Summer Olympic Festival. From 1986-93, Buscaglia served as head western division coach of the Empire State Games, helping coach the top players in the state to numerous medals. Over his career, Buscaglia has won eight conference titles at the Division I level and has averaged over 19 victories per year. In his 20 years as a Division I head coach, Buscaglia has guided his teams to winning seasons in 11 of them. He also owns 14 Coach of the Year honors. A native of Buffalo, New York, Buscaglia is a 1976 graduate of Canisius with a Bachelor of Science Degree in business and accounting and in 1989 earned a Master’s Degree in physical education, also from Canisius. In 1980, Buscaglia received a Master’s Degree in business education from the State Univer-sity of New York College at Buffalo. Buscaglia, a proud father and grandfather, has a son Char-lie, who is associate head coach of the Colonials, and a daugh-ter, Deanna. Deanna resides in Lancaster, N.Y. with her hus-band Mark and their children Paityn (7), Shane (5) and Eva (2).

The 2011-12 Robert Morris University women’s basketball team is led by 32-year veteran head coach Sal Buscaglia. Coach Sal, as he is respectfully called,

is entering his eighth season at the helm and has turned the Colonials into not only a Northeast Conference contender, but a nationally competitive program in his short time at Robert Morris. Four short years after inheriting a program that went 1-26 before his arrival, Buscaglia put the Colonials into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in team history after winning the Northeast Conference Tournament in 2007. One season later, and with just three returning letterwin-ners, Buscaglia pulled the feat off again. Robert Morris re-turned to the NCAA Tournament in 2008 after winning the NEC Regular Season and NEC Tournament Championships for the second straight season. RMU captured its fifth straight 20-win season, posting a record of 23-10, while playing one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the nation. Through De-cember 31, 2007, the Colonials had played the 59th-toughest schedule in Division I. In 2009-10, his Robert Morris squad set team records for regular season wins (22) and conference victories (17) while leading the team to its first outright NEC Regular Season Championship and an eventual Postseason WNIT Tournament. The appearance marked the fourth consecutive season RMU played in a national tournament. The Colonials finished the season 23-9 while picking up a wealth of individual awards. Coach Sal was named the Brenda Reilly NEC Coach of the Year for the second time. Under his tu-telage, Angela Pace became the first player in conference his-tory to earn both the NEC Player of the Year award and NEC Defensive Player of the Year. Pace’s award marked the third-time a Buscaglia player earned the conference’s top individual award. Buscaglia showed imagination and innovation in 2007-08 on the offensive side of the ball, installing a dribble-drive mo-tion offense to take advantage of RMU’s athletic guards. One of just two teams in women’s basketball running that style offense, the Colonials finished 23rd in the nation averaging 73.0 points per game, finished 39th in scoring margin (9.8), finished second in three-point percentage (39.6 percent) and were 29th in field goal percentage (44.3 percent). Coach Sal also turned former guard Sade Logan into one of the nation’s top scorers and the premier three-point shooter in Division I. Logan earned NEC Player of the Year honors, the second Buscaglia recruit to earn the award, while powering one of the top offenses in the nation. She tied the NCAA record for three pointers with 126 and averaged 24.7 points per con-test. The 2006-07 Robert Morris squad won their first NEC Tour-nament since 1991 while putting together a record of 24-8. The Colonials tied for the regularseason conference title with a 15-3 record, then pushed their way into March Madness with a 68-66 win over Sacred Heart in the title game. Buscaglia has now led his teams to 13 national tournament appearances and only two losing seasons. The Colonials have finished with 20 wins in five of the last six seasons, including a 23-9 mark in 2009-10. His team’s 20-10 mark in 2004-05 with his first recruiting class improved upon a 3-24 record the sea-son before, marking the third largest turnaround in the nation in one season. Along the way, Buscaglia tallied his 600th career head coaching victory and currently boosts an overall coaching record of 613-278. Buscaglia’s teams own five of the seven 20-win seasons and are the only squads to win 20-plus games in back-to-back seasons since the program’s inception in 1977. Despite not having the reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Year, Sugiery Monsac, for almost the entire sea-son due to an injury, Coach Sal led the Colonials to the con-ference semifinals in 2005-06, one year after making it to the conference championship. The Colonials earned victories over Horizon League teams Youngstown State, Loyola (Ill.) and

LAST TIME OUT

Greenville, N.C. / Minges Coliseum -The Robert Morris University women’s basketball team overcame early turnovers to defeat the Delaware State Hornets, 75-67, Sunday afternoon at the Minges Coliseum in second day action of the 2011 East Carolina University Thanksgiving Classic. The Colonials sit 5-1 overall while the Hornets watch their record slip to 2-4.

Sophomore Kelly Hartwell (Woodbridge, Va. / Gar-Field) provided a spark for the Colonials off the bench, finishing with a career-high 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting. The sophomore also buried 6-of-7 free throws and had three steals in 33 minutes.

Classmate Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Sixth Senior High School of Nea Smyrni (Greek National Team) also had 20 points and chipped in with nine rebounds. Senior Mary Durojaye (London, England / Barking Abbey (British National Team)) led the team with nine rebounds for a Colonials squad that outrebounded Delaware State, 38-24.

The Colonials fell behind early, committing five turnovers in the game’s first four minutes. Delaware State took advantage, building a 15-4 lead 5:01 into the contest fueled by nine points from Deanna Harmon. The teams went back-and-forth for the next 10 minutes as the Hornets went up by as many as 12, and never less than 10.

Trailing by 12 points, 32-20, with 5:10 left in the first half, Hartwell spurred a 17-0 RMU run. Hartwell tallied four of her 12 first half points in a 30 second span. Four consecutive Spanou points cut the lead to four points before a steal and lay-in by Hartwell brought the game to within one possession.

Spanou buried a three-pointer to give RMU its first lead since scoring the first basket of the contest. Four free throws split by juniors Rocio Medrano (Chihuahua, Mexico / Greenville (Eastern Oklahoma State)) and Briannica Tye (Aurora, Ill. / West Aurora (Mineral Area)), who finished the game with 12 points. Delaware State got the last basket of the half with 14 seconds left to send the contest into the locker room with RMU holding a 37-34 lead.

After committing just one turnover in the final 10 minutes of the first half, RMU gave the ball away five times in the early por-tion of the second half. That allowed Delaware State to take the lead on a Tierra Hawkins jumper with 15:37 to play, 43-41.

Six consecutive points by RMU, all layups, erased the deficit and gave the Colonials a 47-43 lead. After Tasia Bristow cut the lead to two points, the Colonials surged ahead by eight points on a three-point play by Durojaye and a baseline jumper from Hartwell.

Over the final 10 minutes, Robert Morris would stretch the lead to as many as 13 points, 68-55, with 4:03 to play. Delaware State trimmed the lead to seven points with just over a minute to play, but the Colonials would allow them to get no closer en route to a 75-67 win.

Tierra Hawkins led four Hornets players in double digits with 16 points. Deanna Harmon added 14 points and Keyanna Tate and Tasia Bristow each finished with 11.

Robert Morris shot 50 percent (26-52) for the game despite converting on just 4-of-22 (18.2 percent) of its three-pointers. The Colonials were 19-of-22 (86.4 percent) from the charity stripe. Delaware State was 27-of-59 (45.8 percent) overall and 1-of-7 (14.3 percent) on three balls.

THE BETTER BENCHThe Colonials received more points from the bench, 63, in the last two games than they had in the previous four games. the Colonials outscored the Elon and Delaware State benches by a combined 63-34 in two wins at the East Carolina Thanksgiving Classic. Sophomore Kelly Hartwell was responsible for 29 of those points.

STOP THE BALLThe Colonials are averaging 10.3 fast break points per game and have allowed opponents just an average of 3.0 fast break points per contest.

NOT VALUING THE BALLThe Colonials have not valued the ball this season averaging 21.8 turnovers per game this season. The problem was magnified in a two-point loss at Stony Brook where RMU had a season-high 25 miscues. The Seawolves scored 16 of their 42 points, 30 percent, off of the RMU giveaways.

HOW MAY I ASSIST YOU?Junior Briannica Tye dished out nine assists in her Colonials debut. That total marks the highest single player assist total since former star An-gela Pace (2008-10) dished out nine dimes in a 20-point win at Mount St. Mary’s on February 27, 2010. Tye leads the Northeast Conference in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio.

ARTEMIS - GREEK GODDESS OF THE HARDWOODSophomore Artemis Spanou was named to the preseason All-NEC team and has lived up to the billing picking up two double-doubles so far this season. Last season, she was tied for first in the conference to Sacred Heart’s Callan Taylor in double-doubles with 12. As a rookie, a double-double in conference games at 13.7 points per game and 10.6 rebounds. In Greek mythology, Artemis is the daughter of Zeus and Leto and the twin sister of Apollo. She is the goddess of the hunt, wild animals, childbirth and young girls.

OFF THE BENCH FROM THE BRONXJunior April Williams, a native of the Bronx, has come off the bench to provide RMU with a much-needed lift. She is fourth on the team lead in scoring with 10.3 points per game in her reserve role and is second on the squad with seven steals.

CHARLIE BUSCAGLIA A TOP MID-MAJOR ASSISTANT COACHESA recent column on collegeinsider.com by Jason Belzer listed RMU associate head coach Charlie Buscaglia ninth on a list of the “Top 25 Mid-Major Women’s College Basketball Assistants”. Buscaglia is ninth on a list that is topped by 24-year Kent State associate head coach Lori Bodnar. The Colonials beat the Golden Flashes by 34 points early this season.

JUST KENT GET ENOUGH ... TURNOVERSThe Colonials forced Kent State to turn the ball over 36 times Tuesday, the most since Seton Hill committed 36 turnovers in a November 29, 2003, game. St. Francis (N.Y.) had 37 turnovers in a game against RMU during the 1995-96 season with the record being held by East Tennesee State. The Buccaneers had 44 miscues on Dec. 17, 1996.

WHO WAS ROBERT MORRIS?

The “Financier of the American Revolution.” He isn’t as famous as his friend George Washington, but without Robert Morris, the American colonies’ bold attempt to throw off British rule never could have succeeded.

Born in 1734 in Liverpool, England, Robert Morris sailed to the United States with his father when he was 14 years old. Morris became a partner at the import export firm of Willing & Morris where he made his millions. After, he became the spokesman for opposition to the Stamp Act, smuggled arms for the new American army and navy, signed the Declaration of Independence, secured financing — often using his personal credit — to fight the Revolutionary War and served as a Pennsylvania state senator. He died in Philadelphia on May 8, 1806.

2011-12 ROBERT MORRIS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL — AT 2011 ECU THANKSGIVING CLASSIC

NON-CONFERENCE MARGIN OF VICTORYThe 34-point margin of victory by Robert Morris against Kent State was the team’s biggest victory in a non-conference game since pounding Longwood, 96-62, on Dec. 28, 2006.

500 REBOUND CLUBIn the final regular season game of last season, senior Mary Durojaye be-came the 17th player in team history to record 500 career rebounds. Du-rojaye finished sixth in the NEC in rebounding last season, pulling down 236 boards for an average of 7.9 per game. Durojaye sits 16th all-time on the Colonials rebounding list, moving past the shortest 500-rebound club member in Angela Pace (2008-10).

MVP TIMES THREEArtemis Spanou spent her summer traveling around Europe collecting trophies. The sophomore was named the most valuable player at the 2011 FIBA U20 Women’s European Championships, the third time in her international career. She also earned MVP awards at the 2010 U18 Championships and the 2008 U16 Championships after leading Greece to a gold medal. Also this past summer, Spanou was named to the all-tournament team at the U18 European Championships.

SEVEN CONSECUTIVE PLAYOFF BERTHSRobert Morris secured its seventh consecutive NEC playoff berth last season. The Colonials have made the playoffs every season since 2004-05 finishing no worse than sixth during that stretch. RMU has finished first in three of those seasons, earning the tournament’s top seed in 2010.

CHUCK’S CHARMSThe Charles L. Sewall Center, a.k.a. “The Chuck”, has lent a certain advantage for the Colonials over the past nine seasons. Since 2004-05, Robert Morris is 79-19 (.806) in home games.

CHUCK’S CONFERENCE CHARMSThe Charles L. Sewall Center, a.k.a. “The Chuck”, has become a formidable place for Northeast Confer-ence opponents to visit. Dating back to the 2004-05 season, head coach Sal Buscaglia’s second season in Moon Township, RMU is 51-10 at home against league teams. The 2005-06 team won all nine of its conference home games.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR PASSPORTThe Colonials feature seven international players hailing from five dif-ferent countries. Senior Mary Durojaye and junior Josette Campbell call London, England, home. Sophomores Artemis Spanou and Anna Kavasila are both from Greece while Romane Dessacs joins RMU from France and Rocio Medrano is originally from Mexico.

SPREADING THE TALENTThe Colonials 13 players represent a total of 11 different states or countries. England and Greece are the only countries that can boast being the home of more than one RMU player. Robert Morris fea-tures players from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, Illinois, New York and Rhode Island.

600Head coach Sal Buscaglia picked up his 600th career win in a 79-50 victory against Fairleigh Dick-inson on January 14, 2010. Now in his 34th season, he has racked up a 629-2928 record on the junior college and NCAA Division I level. He has 339 ins on the DI level and has recorded 10 20-win cam-paigns in 19 seasons on the Division I level along with a total of 19 20-win records in 31 full seasons. Buscaglia has more wins than any other coach in the Northeast Conference.

2011-12 NEC PRESEASONThe Robert Morris University women’s basketball team was selected second in the 2011-12 Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll released by the league Thursday. This is the second straight season the Colonials were picked second in the preseason poll and the seventh con-secutive season RMU has been selected among the top-four teams in the league. Robert Morris received two first-place votes. Two-time defending champion Saint Francis (Pa.) re-ceived four first-place votes to earn the top spot in the poll. Long Island follows RMU at third in the poll while Sacred Heart and Monmouth tied for fourth, each receiv-ing two first-place votes. Quinnipiac was sixth followed by Fairleigh Dickinson, Bryant, Central Connecticut State, Wagner, Mount St. Mary’s and St. Francis (N.Y.). Sophomore forward Artemis Spanou was the only un-derclassman named to the Preseason All-NEC Team. The 2011 NEC Rookie of the Year, Spanou averaged a double-double in league games with 13.7 points and 10.6 rebounds per contest as a freshman. She also earned spots on the NEC All-Conference Second Team and the NEC All-Rookie team last season. The Colonials return two starters and six letterwinners from a team that went 16-14 overall and 12-6 in Northeast Conference play in 2010-11. RMU advanced to the NEC Tournament semifinals after finishing in a tie for third in the conference standings. Senior forward Mary Durojaye is the only other re-turning forward besides Spanou. As a junior, Durojaye became the 16th player in team history to collect 500 ca-reer rebounds while averaging 7.9 boards for the season. She added 10.1 points a game and finished third in the NEC shooting 52.0 percent (118-227) from the floor. Robert Morris is led by ninth-year head coach Sal Bus-caglia, a two-time winner of the NEC’s Brenda Reilly Coach of the Year award. In 33 seasons as a head coach, Buscaglia has won 629 career games, and has built the Colonials pro-gram into a conference power.
