NOTES

Chowan enters their fifth season of CIAA competition. The Hawks look to a host of newcomers along with a few key returners to build off a 5-21 overall season and 5-11 finish in league play one year ago. This year’s squad will feature an adjusted style of play, fresh attitude, a new approach heading into the 2013-14 season. First year assistant coach Brittany Hall joins the Hawks’ coaching staff this season as well, which will add NCAA Division II National Championship experience to the mix.

CHOWAN UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PRESEASON PREVIEW

2013-2014 The Chowan University women’s basketball team enters the upcoming season with high hopes and expectations. After turning in a 5-21 overall mark and 5-11 finish in CIAA play, the Hawks hit the court in 2013-14 with a new look and fresh approach. After bowing out of the CIAA tournament in the first round with a 67-63 loss to St. Augustine’s, the Hawks look to rebuild this year to make their mark in the regular season as well as tournament play. The women’s basketball team lost four seniors to graduation last season, Danielle Coleman, T’Arra Cutting, Talaya Lynch and Karina Monroe. Lynch ended her career with the Hawks with 1,412 career points, ranking second in all-time scoring records. She also tallied 578 total career rebounds and was a three-time All-CIAA selection over the course of her career along with a spot on the CIAA All-Rookie Team. The Hawks welcome a host of newcomers to the squad this season. Lenoir-Rhyne transfer Alisha Mobley is expected to make an immediate impact along with freshman guard Chantel Roberts. Six additional newcomers will add some depth to the mix and will give the Hawks additional options as the season progresses. Head Coach Patrick Mashuda enters his tenth season at the helm of the women’s basketball program and is eager to see this year’s team come together. Mashuda welcomed Clayton State graduate Brittany Hall to the staff earlier this fall. Hall’s NCAA DII National Championship experience should provide valuable insight to the young Hawks’ squad this season. Assistant coach/strength and conditioning coordinator Patricia Price returns to the staff for her second season with the program. The Hawks return Janelle Murphy for a final season with the Blue and White. Murphy averaged 10.4 points per game during her junior campaign and will be counted on greatly. Summer Curtis enters her junior season after collecting 127 rebounds (42 offensive, 85 defensive) and 41 blocks. Curtis holds the current

Chowan record for blocked shots in a season (79) which she set as a rookie. Chowan tips-off their season on November 8th and 9th when they take on West Virginia State and the University of Charleston in the Mountain East/CIAA Challenge. Interesting Facts about CU Women’s Basketball

All five of Chowan’s wins last season came against CIAA opponents.

The Hawks’ advancement to the CIAA semi-final game in 2012 was their best finish at the CIAA Tournament in their short history as members of the league.

Assistant coach Brittany Hall ranks in the top 10 of 14 categories in the Clayton State record books.

PATRICK MASHUDA

10th SEASON

Patrick Mashuda enters his tenth season at the helm of the women’s basketball program at Chowan. Mashuda also serves as the Associate Athletic Director for Compliance. Since taking over the program in 2004, Mashuda has accumulated a 109-137 overall coaching record and took his team to the NCCAA South Region Tournament in three of his first five seasons as head coach. In 2012-2013, the Hawks tallied a 5-21 overall record. Mashuda guided stand-out Talaya Lynch to her third selection to the All-CIAA Team. Lynch ended her career with the Hawks with 1,412 points and 578 total rebounds and ranks second in the Chowan University record book for career points. The 2011-2012 team saw the program reach new heights. January 26th 2012 proved to be a historic night as Coach Mashuda earned his 100th career win in a 68-59 victory over Elizabeth City State, and freshman Summer Curtis tied the school record for blocks in a single season. That same season, Mashuda led the Hawks to the CIAA Tournament semi-final; a best-ever finish for the program since joining the league. In the first round, All-CIAA Ransheda Jennings led the Hawks past Fayetteville State University with a buzzer beater shot. All-CIAA Talaya Lynch stepped up against Virginia Union, scoring 19 points to lead the Hawks to a 58-32 win over Virginia Union to advance to the semi-final game against Johnson C. Smith University. In 2010-2011, Chowan competed in their second season as a member of the storied CIAA, where Mashuda led his program to an 11-7 CIAA record and a tie for first place in the North Division. His team improved to 15-13 overall, which included a five-game conference winning streak. Mashuda led the Hawks to their first ever CIAA Tournament victory, a 56-53 come from behind win over Livingstone College on February 28th. Ransheda Jennings and Talaya Lynch were named to the 2010-2011 All-CIAA Team.

Summer Curtis was named to the CIAA All-Rookie team after tallying a staggering 79 blocks in her first season with the Hawks. Mashuda is also a part of the Chowan University Athletics Management Team as the Associate Athletics Director for NCAA Compliance, a position he has held since the school transitioned to DII status in 2005-06. Mashuda comes to Chowan by way of Pittsburgh, PA where he attended Mars High School. Upon graduation from Mars he went to Butler County Community College in Butler, PA where he played golf and basketball. He received an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration and went on to Robert Morris University in December of 1992, where he was a two-year member of the golf team.

PATRICIA PRICE

2nd SEASON

This year is the second year for Patricia Price as a member of the women's basketball coaching staff. She serves as an assistant basketball coach and strength and conditioning coordinator. Price is no stranger to Chowan having completed undergraduate studies in Exercise Science and Sport Management in 2011. During her time at Chowan, Price was also an integral part of the Chowan University women's basketball team. Price went on to earn her Master's of Education in Sport Leadership in May of 2012 from Virginia Commonwealth University. Price's most recent experience comes from the University of Richmond as a graduate assistant in the strength and conditioning program. Price also served as a strength and conditioning intern in 2010 for Virginia Commonwealth University where she implemented and supervised training programs for the Rams. Head coach Patrick Mashuda looks forward to having Price on his staff again this year. "As a head coach it is an honor to have one of your former players join your staff. Coach P brings a wealth of knowledge from not only a basketball standpoint, but also from a strength and conditioning perspective. I am blessed to her as part of the the women's basketball program." Price is a certified strength and conditioning specialist. She resides in Murfreesboro.

BRITTANY HALL

1st SEASON

Brittany Hall enters her first season with the athletic department at Chowan. The former Clayton State standout joins Patrick Mashuda and Patricia Price on the women’s basketball coaching staff. She was selected to the Peach Belt Tournament Team in 2010, and was awarded the Clayton State University Coaches’ Award that same year. As a three-year captain for the Lakers, Hall certainly made her presence known on the court. Head Women’s Basketball Coach and Associate Athletic Director Patrick Mashuda stated, “Brittany is a bright young coach who will be an outstanding role model for our players. She has experienced unprecedented success at the Division II level and we look forward to her helping us move the program to the next level.
