ABOUT THE WARRIORS

The 2011-12 Lewis-Clark State women’s basketball team finished the season with a 29-5 record, won the Frontier Conference Tournament and won a game at the NAIA Tournament before losing in the Sweet 16 to the fifth-ranked team in the nation. Starting off their 2012-13 season, the Warriors are 1-8 losing to three teams in the CCC; College of Idaho, Southern Oregon, and Oregon Tech.

LAST TIME THEY MET...Dec. 18, 2011LEWISTON, Idaho – The No. 5 Lewis-Clark State College women’s basketball team held off No. 10 Eastern Oregon University in a top 10 battle Saturday, 68-59.

The Warriors’ (9-1) Kirsi Voshell needed six points entering the game to surpass 1,000 points in her career. The senior finished with 22 points to lead the fifth-ranked team in NAIA Div. 1. She hit 9-of-13 shots from the floor, gathered 13 rebounds, had three blocks, and three steals.

Voshell stands as the second Warrior to reach the 1,000 career points milestone this season as Alyssa Fierro accomplished the feat back on Nov. 20 against Pacific Union. Fierro had 11 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists Saturday. Jasmine Stohr had 19 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Tasha Bishop added 10 points.

Holding just a two point lead, 30-28, a minute into the second half, Lewis-Clark State struggled to shake loose a Mountaineer squad that always seemed to answer with a 3-pointer or steal to keep the game close. Thanks, in part, to 15 second half points by Voshell, the Warriors were able to create a little bit of distance and push to their largest lead of 49-37 at the 11:05 mark.

Eastern Oregon was able to cut the lead to 60-57 with 2:55 left in regulation, but a steal by Brittany Niebergall and back-to-back buckets on the inside by Voshell and Fierro helped LCSC stay in front for the win.

Lewis-Clark State held EOU to a season-low 19 field goals and 27 percent shooting from the field. The Warriors were 44 percent from the field. Eastern was 8-for-25 from three-point range, while LCSC was 4-of-13. Both teams shot well from the free-throw line as Lewis-Clark State made 20 of its 24 attempts, and the Mountaineers hit 13-of-15.

The Warriors finished with a 34-20 advantage in the paint, and a 47-32 lead in rebounds. EOU had a 27-4 bench-point advantage. Brooke Randall led the Mountaineers with 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the outside. Eastern went 8-for-25 from 3-point territory overall. Korrie Bourn grabbed eight rebounds, threw five assists and had four steals.

Eastern had 13 steals and forced LCSC into 21 turnovers. The Mountaineers (9-2, 2-0 Cascade Col-legiate Conference) committed 10 turnovers.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCEIt was a week of sweeps as four Cascade Conference schools opened up the conference portion of the schedule 2-0. Southern Oregon continued its impressive start with wins over Northwest Christian and Corban while preseason favorite Eastern Oregon earned wins over Concordia and Warner Pacific. Oregon Tech also swept NCU and Corban on the road while College of Idaho defended their home court against Concordia and Warner Pacific. Ever-green overcame a halftime deficit to open up their conference season 1-0 with a win over Northwest. This week, it’s back to the non-conference portion of the schedule and it will be a busy one with 18 games scheduled over the next seven days.
