New websiteWilliamsburg Hamlet has an official website!!! Our web address is www.katyhamlet.org. In order to gain full access to the site, you will need to contact Hilary Chala at 713-329-7171 and obtain your ID number to create an account with the site. Once you have your ID, you will visit the website and click “Sign Up for a New Account” on the right hand side of the page. Then, you will register as a first time user and create a unique user ID and password to use each time you login. From the new website, you will be able to view our deed restrictions, bylaws, governing documents, financial reports, minutes from meetings of the Board of Directors, architectural review forms, your account status, pool information and general community information. We encourage you to become familiar with the site and take some time to take the “Homeowner Orientation” offered there, which gives some very useful information on life in a homeowner’s association.

Home aNd VeHicle securityHere in the Hamlet, since we have only 2-way streets, parking is LEGAL only on the right side of each street. The red reflectors on the rear of vehicles are to warn night drivers that they are approaching the rear of another vehicle. So, by parking the wrong way on a street, the front of this vehicle is facing the oncoming traffic, plus, it is illegally parked. And remember, it is ILLEGAL to park within fifteen (15) feet of a fire hydrant. This one might get your vehicle towed!

Parking in a driveway, when possible, is safer than street parking. The “street” side of a vehicle parked in the street is more vulnerable to break-in and vandalism than the “curb” side and even more so when no alarm system is employed. Remove all loose valuable items - or at least cover them to prevent viewing from the outside of the vehicle. And, above all, use normal precautions such as closing all windows and sunroofs and lock all doors.

Available statistics will show that homes and outside property that are neat and well kept have less problems with burglary and theft than the reverse conditions. Security systems have a definite impact on the number of home forced entries.

Double-keyed deadbolt locks are recommended for exterior entrance doors, along with reinforced door-facing inner safety plates. Security lights with motion sensors seem to help deter night mischief acts. Keeping the yard clean and mowed, shrubbery trimmed and clear of the walls of buildings and doorways clear and visible will give everything a more secure appearance.

Security is similar to charity - it needs to begin at home.

deed restrictioNsPlease take some time to take an assessment of the exterior of your home. A fresh coat of paint is a solid investment in preserving your home. Approved colors for the Hamlet are earth tones. Please submit an architectural review for your chose color and consider this important home maintenance responsibility. If you have replaced your siding and have yet to paint, please do so. Tending to your landscaping can boost your curb appeal, as well as save you greatly in home repair in the long run. Overgrown plants near your home can conceal insect infestation and damage your foundation and home exterior. Now is a good time to take inventory and prune your plants. Avoid planting close to your home.

The board asks that those of you who have received letters from the management company comply with the requests to abide by the community’s deed restrictions. When you purchased a home in this community, you chose to participate in our rules and regulations. We all want a beautiful Hamlet and every home makes a difference! If you are having difficulty complying with the request, please contact the management company and explain your situation. Communication is the first step toward understanding!

GRAND OPENING

ArchitecturAl reviewA new “Application for Approval to Modify Home or Property” is available. This year, there have been some changes in the Texas State laws and our deed restrictions have evolved to reflect those changes. The new laws allow for solar energy devices; the display of U.S., Texas and U.S. armed forces flags and rainwater harvesting systems, as well as certain types of shingles. All of these additions to your home would require an architectural review and are only allowed in certain places on your home/lot. The deed restriction changes will be available on the new website www.katyhamlet.org. To avoid penalties, please complete the approval form before you begin any change or addition to your home, which will affect the exterior appearance of your property. Martin Courville is the board contact for architectural reviews; so if you have any questions regarding the approval process or if an application is needed, please contact him at 281-343-6881, [email protected] or contact Hilary Chala at PMG at 713-329-7171. Thank you in advance for your cooperation!

MAilbox GuidelinesAll homes in the Hamlet are regulated by the requirements of the United States Postal Service (USPS) and must therefore, provide an authorized mail receptacle, including proper installation and maintenance. Let us take pride in the appearance of our mailboxes. In Section 1 of the Hamlet approximately 20 percent (1 of 5) mailboxes and/or posts are in need of attention. by making these corrections alone, we could greatly improve the drive through looks and overall appearance of our neighborhood.

Some of the discrepancies noted during a drive through were: (1) Doors hanging open; (2) Mailboxes in need of repair or replacement; (3) Posts leaning sideways in need of paint or replacing.

Since USPS is a federal agency, their standards apply nationally and are NOT regulated by local government agencies. There are three approved standard sizes and two styles of mailboxes, so make sure that if you are buying a new mailbox it satisfies USPS requirements. The two styles are: Traditional and Contemporary.

The three sizes are: • 18 1/2” Long X 5” Wide X 6” High • 19 1/2” Long X 6” Wide X 7” High • 22 1/2” Long X 8” Wide X 11 1/2 High

Mailbox installation standards are: (1) The bottom of the mailbox to be at a vertical height of 42” to 48” above the street surface (NOT the curb); (2) From the front face (street side) of the curb to the mailbox door should be 6” to 8”. The post should be neat, sturdy and strong enough to support your mailbox. Home address numbers that are at least 1” tall should be applied to the right side of the mailbox or post. No signs or advertisements may be attached to your mailbox or post. And YES, it is illegal for any person, other than the property owner or resident and USPS employees, to open or close the door, or insert or remove any item from your mailbox. SO, with a little TLC, your mailbox can reflect your and the neighborhood’s personality.

Pet ownershiP resPonsibilityPets are valued and loved members of the Hamlet community! If you love your pets, please keep them inside your home or your enclosed yard! Your neighbors cannot be responsible for your loved pets and they are not safe outside of your home or yard. All pets in the Hamlet must be licensed, vaccinated and wear proper identifying tags. If you encounter loose dogs or cats in the neighborhood, you may call Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services at the following number: 281-999-3191. You may also call this number if you have stray or abandoned animals on your property. Thank you for caring about your pets, your neighbors and your neighborhood!

rePort incidentsPlease help keep the Hamlet safe and nuisance free by reporting incidents when you notice them. Speeding vehicles, suspicious persons or vehicles and annoying sounds (car alarms that do not get turned off by their owner at any time of day or dogs barking and loud music after 10 PM) are all examples of non-emergency incidents to report to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Non-emergency calls should be made to 713-221-6000. be observant and take down

By law, homeowners or contractors planning projects involving digging must call 811 at least 48 hours ahead of time. At no cost, the notification center will alert utilities such as electric, gas, cable and phone companies so they can mark the location of their underground lines.

Following these simple steps can prevent an interruption of service or possible safety hazards:• Call 811 before you dig • Wait the required amount of time (at least 48 hours)• Respect the locator’s marks • Dig with care

marCH gardening tipSWith Yard of the Month resuming in April, now is a good time to turn your eye on your flowerbeds and yard. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:• If you have planted a new tree, you may think it would look lovely to plant flowers around it; however, mulch is the best option. New trees do not like to be disturbed with digging and their roots need room to grow.• March and April are not the best times to prune pine trees as they tend to bleed more then than during other months of the year. • Once your tulips have flowered, remove them - they will not flower again in the Gulf Area.• This is a great time to dig up some of your overcrowded perennial flowers and share them with friends, family and neighbors or transplant them to another part of your garden to make room for spring growth.

Daylight SavingS timeIt is once again time to spring forward. Daylight Savings Time, when you set your clocks one hour ahead, will occur March 11, 2012. The idea of Daylight Savings Time was first conceived by Benjamin Franklin in an essay while he was an American delegate in Paris in 1784. Daylight Savings Time has been around in the U.S. since World War 1. The main purpose at that time was to conserve fuel to provide electric power. Daylight Savings Time gives us the opportunity to enjoy sunny evenings so remember to spring forward. It is also a good time to check your smoke alarm batteries. Happy Spring!

Planting the Right tRee in the Right Place

CenterPoint Energy understands that the responsible planting of trees is a way to care for our environment and beautify our community, yet we are also committed to the safe and reliable delivery of electricity. Our professional tree pruning program is integrated into our daily operations to help make this possible. Trees that grow close to CenterPoint Energy’s electrical poles and lines will be pruned by a professional tree trimming company under contract with CenterPoint Energy. Any vegetation greater than 10 feet in height will be removed from high-voltage transmission line rights-of-way.

Palm trees growing near power lines create unique issues. Unlike other trees, palms grow in a straight, vertical line, with a single growing point at the top of the tree. Because of this single-growth point, normal pruning techniques are not effective. With most trees, crews are able to direct the growth away from power lines using proper pruning techniques, but growth of palm trees cannot be redirected.

If you choose to include palm trees in your landscape, CenterPoint Energy recommends a planting distance of 20 - 40 feet to reduce the risk of windblown fronds contacting power lines. Consumers should plant palm trees far enough away from power lines that no part of the tree ever grows within 10 feet of the line.

CenterPoint Energy encourages you to plant the “Right Tree in the Right Place” by thinking about the mature height of a tree and its distance from power lines before planting. For more information on safe planting practices and a list of power line-friendly trees, visit CenterPointEnergy.com/trees.

Many families, like the Holmes family, are unaware of TH and until delivery don’t know that their child has TH. Our goal, while still paying the medical expenses of Talan, is to help other families that may not have the ability to raise their own funds or simply can’t raise enough to get their child the prosthesis that he or she needs.

HOUSTON LIVESTOCK SHOW & RODEO™ COOKS UP HOUSTON’S HOT SUMMER BREAK™ BENEFITS ANNUAL EVENT

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo today announced the launch of a new summer festival, benefiting the Show and allowing Houstonians an enjoyable, refreshing and entertaining break from the city’s summer heat.

Houston’s Hot Summer Break, July 4-8, 2012, is an all day, five-day music, food, beer, wine and spirits festival, featuring top chefs and mixologists, shopping, and live music. Held completely inside Reliant Center, the summer event includes cooking demonstrations, a beer brewing competition, wine and liquor seminars and the search for Houston’s best cocktail, margarita and martini. Patrons also can explore both floors of Reliant Center to listen and dance to live concerts featuring country, blues and jazz music, along with disc jockeys playing a mix of club music. “We are thrilled to announce the development of Houston’s Hot Summer Break,” said Skip Wagner, president of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. “Houstonians love to celebrate and this festival offers them a really cool way to do so. We look forward to

making it one of the best and most successful events of its kind, offering attendees the ability to get away without going away!”

Another highlight of the event, a restaurant-style café, will allow attendees the opportunity to sit and enjoy creations from several Houston-area restaurants, cafés and diners, including a wine bar and coffee shop. Net proceeds generated from Houston’s Hot Summer Break will directly benefit the mission of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a Section 501(c)(3) charity that benefits youth, supports education, and facilitates better agricultural practices through exhibitions and presentation. The KaTy/WesT housTon Jazz FesTival 2012

Like Music? “You’ll Love Katy!” The Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival is scheduled for April 27 and 28, 2012. You will not want to miss this exciting weekend of music and art coming to Katy, Texas!

The purpose of the Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival is to increase exposure of jazz, to extend jazz education for developing musicians and to provide entertainment of the jazz music medium in the Katy and West Houston areas. The Festival’s activities are non-competitive and dedicated to the development and preservation of this truly American art form.

The Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival is also a uniquely different event for jazz music patrons. All attendees have the opportunity to hear big bands and combos comprised of student jazz musicians throughout the day, as well as featured guitar artists and aspiring music groups, via the component known as the Katy Guitar Fest. Each day then can be completed by attending the Featured Concerts on Friday and Saturday nights by world-renown jazz recording artists. Throughout the day an exhibit of outstanding visual artwork, by area and national artists, known as ARTkaty is on display and provides the opportunity for attendees to view, enjoy, and purchase fine artwork of the highest quality. More information about the featured jazz artists, featured guitar artists, and visual artists can be found on the website: www.WestHoustonJazz.com. When you have reached the website,

you can sign up for updates on the artists and latest information pertaining to the Festival and the professional artists! You can also follow the latest “buzz” about the Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival on Facebook, a link to which can also be found on the website!

Performance participation in the Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival is open to all student jazz ensembles (big bands and/or combos) at the middle school, junior high, high school and/or college levels. Performance and participation in the Katy Guitar Fest is encouraged for all guitarists of all ages and all genres of music. Registration forms for each of these components are available on the website: www.WestHoustonJazz.com. Student participating ensembles will receive professional constructive comments by renowned professional jazz artists after their performances, as well as participate in individualized instruction on their own musical instruments through “master classes” with the professional jazz artists. Topics and technical studies ranging from jazz interpretation to improvisation to composition and professional pathways in jazz are all included in the master classes.

Festival attendees may attend any of the daily performances and art exhibit with the purchase of a daily admission wristband. Shuttle buses will be available, at no cost to Festival attendees, for transportation from the local Katy hotels (which offer reduced rates to Festival participants and attendees) to the Festival and return them to their original point of departure. Daily admission wristbands will be available at the entrance to the Katy High School Performing Arts Center or in the lobby of the following Katy hotels located at the Katy Mills Mall area: Best Western Plus; Hilton Garden Inn; Springhill Suites, by Marriott and the Residence Inn, by Marriott.

Admission to the evening Feature Concerts is by ticket only. Tickets can be purchased at the Ticket Window of the Katy High School Performing Arts Center or in the lobby areas of the Katy hotels noted above during the days of the Festival, or in advance from any Katy ISD high school band member, Cinco Ranch Conservatory of Music or online at www.WestHoustonJazz.com. Please visit the website to receive information pertaining to the dates for ticket sales at a later time. Proceeds from the Festival go to support the jazz education at Katy ISD high schools.

Second Saturday Aluminum Can Collection - If you live in the Houston Area, please consider participating in our “Cans for a Cure” Recycling Program. The second Saturday of each month, Keep Kids Connected collects aluminum beverage cans at the Tradition Bank Pin Oak Branch location from 9 am-12 pm. The proceeds from recycling the cans helps fund the purchase of Netbook computers and pediatric cancer research. Invite your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to support this recycling pro-gram and donate their aluminum cans to Keep Kids Connected.

Keep Kids Connected was created to help kids stay connected to family and friends while they undergo their treatment for cancer or any other life-threatening illness. The idea for the organization was created by Caitlyn Mortus who is, herself, a cancer survivor. While going through her treatments, she was given a Netbook computer from a family friend. The computer kept her in contact with her friends and helped keep her spirits up when she was in the hospital for her treatments or unable to have visitors. Her wish is that every kid battling cancer or any life-threatening illness be given a computer so they can stay connected to their family and friends while they are going through their treatments. Her wish has become our mission.
