Letter FroM the PresIDent

Dear members, This June will mark the 13th anniversary of the WCAA. It has been an amazing journey from the humble beginnings that we experienced. This journey could not have been so successful without the many hands, minds and effort that were put in by so many people who you may not know worked for the good of all the children in Wesley Chapel. These people unselfishly gave their time and sacrificed more than that to make this association the beacon it is in Pasco County and beyond. Marriages were strained, jobs were lost but still they worked for only the smiles on the faces of the children who participated. I tell you this because as a volunteer based organization, these people really do only work for the smiles. They choose to stay somewhat anonymous, and just allow your families very good quality time and enjoyment. They don’t ask for kudos, or awards but in my mind they deserve more than those things. Halos come to my mind. So if you see one of these people when you are out and about give them a high five, maybe a thank you. They deserve this and I think it will make their day. So without further ado, I would like to personally thank the many who have sat in meeting rooms, ordered jerseys, paid bills, lined fields, built goals, cleaned up, cooked food, sold soda, moved clay and dirt, and the other too numerous to mention efforts they have undertaken , all so that all of our kids could enjoy their Saturdays and succeed. I apologize if I have missed anyone, please know that your efforts have not gone unnoticed by me, just your name has grown fuzzy in my cluttered mind. If I have missed your name please do tell me so I can amend our records and we can order you a halo.

The weather sure was cold and windy but the games were hotly contested during our 2nd annual Harry Olsen Memorial Cup (March 2nd and 3rd). Everything was very well organized and ran very smoothly thanks to the HOMC committee members. Everyone had fun; players and spectators alike. As you can see from the final results the

Wesley Chapel soccer club was very well represented. Our thanks goes out to every team/club that came from far and wide to participate in the tournament. I personally received very positive comments from coaches and team managers from the other clubs coming to play in the tournament with a reassurance they will be back next year to play again. We also received praise for the quality of our facilities, so a big thank you must go to Scott Carlson and the County for taking great care of the playing fields. Looking to the near future we are busy planning our Spring League season for ages U6 through U12 and registration is now open (www.wesleychapelsoccerclub.com/home/recreational/spring-league) but you must register soon as spaces are limited and they will fill up fast. We are also just starting our Adult Soccer league playing on Sunday afternoons and we will keep our registration open so all you “Beckham Wanna Be’s” can come and join us for a fun way to exercise and enjoy the same game your kids do…..All skill levels are welcome. •

The Wesley Chapel Soccer Club U9 Boys Red team had a great showing at this past weekend's President's Day tournament in Valrico. Although the early morning temperatures for the first game were in the 40's with the windchill, the boys brought lots of heat and passion to the game. They found their passes connecting well and their shots hitting the back of the net as they topped SC Spirit 5-3 for the victory. Following a break in action, the U9 Boys took the field once again in the afternoon against the Cyclones from Cape Coral. WCSC jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but the Cyclones played hard and challenged our boys the entire match. The game saw what can be described as some of the best passing of the tournament. and found WCSC victorious

once again with a final score of 5-2. The following morning saw even colder temperatures, and the WCSC U9 Boys facing the Tampa Rangers. The Rangers took and early 1-0 lead, but our boys came right back to tie the game at 1-1. The remainder of the match saw a very hard-fought struggle between both squads, with the Rangers scoring late to break the tie and emerge victorious with a 1-5 win. The U9 boys knew they did not play the game they set out to play, and within a couple of hours they'd get their chance to remedy that. Following some confusion and much drama on the part of the tournament committee, it was determined the Tampa Rangers were the #1 seed in the tournament with WCSC seeded #2 and edging out the team from Cape Coral as

7WCAA / APRIL 2013

a result of their head-to-head victory over the Cyclones. This meant a rematch against the Tampa Rangers for the tournament championship. WCSC stormed out to a quick 1-0 lead, but shortly thereafter found themselves tied at 1-1 as the Rangers continued to play with the same level of intensity they showed in the first match. The U9 Boys were resolved to match this intensity and found the back of the net for a 2-1 lead. However, this same high-tempo aggressiveness lead to a penalty in the box against WCSC. The resulting penalty kick knotted the game at 2-2. As the game wound down to its final stages, the WCSC offense was sparked by a long pass forward from the back

of the defense. This resulted in a quick scoring opportunity and a shot-on-goal against a charging goalkeeper. The shot was blocked, but the resulting rebound found its way to the foot of one of WCSC's midfielders who promptly lofted the ball into the back of the goal. The 3-2 lead was fiercely defended by the U9 Boys as the Tampa Rangers aggressively pressed on offense and created scoring opportunities of their own, but it was not enough to overcome the resolve or the WCSC squad. The final whistles blew and the Wesley Chapel Soccer Club U9 Boys Red team found themselves victorious and tournament champions! •

saint Leo University head Coach Lesley Graham to Coach WCAA Panthers Lacrosse team Wesley Chapel Athletic Association is holding open-tryouts for the first national recruiting tournament select lacrosse team known as The Panthers. Lesley Graham, Saint Leo University DII Women's Lacrosse Head Coach, was named Head Coach of the Lady Panther's Program. Stepping in as Assistant Coach is Mike Diaz, University of South Florida Women's Club Lacrosse Head Coach and also the Wesley Chapel Lady Wildcats, girls high school team. The Panther Program has been developed as a vehicle for high school sophomore, junior and seniors to be seen at major college recruiting tournaments held in the South as well as the Northeast. Renee Diaz, WCAA Assistant Lacrosse Director says, "It's time for the best of the best in Tampa Bay to be seen by NCAA and NAIA college lacrosse coaches at all divisional levels. We have athletes in the Tampa Bay Area who have been playing lacrosse for almost 10 years and whose talents may go unseen unless they are given the opportunity that the Panther Program provides. " To be eligible to try out student athletes must graduate in 2014, 2015 or 2016. They must live within 100 mile radius

of Wesley Chapel District

Park .Open-tryouts

will be held Sunday, April 7th

9 am-noon and Sunday, April 14th

9 am-noon @ Wesley Chapel District Park,

7727 Boyette Rd., Wesley Chapel, Fl 33545. If chosen for the Panther Team they

must commit to attend all four national recruiting

tournaments. The $75.00 tryout fee will be applied to registration fee if player makes the team.

For more information or to receive the Tryout Registration Form email [email protected].

Lesley Graham Lesley Graham was named the first women’s lacrosse coach at Saint Leo University in September of 2010 and began her first competitive season coaching in 2012. In her initial season leading the Green and Gold, Graham guided her squad to a 5-9 record. Scoring her first-ever victory against Catawba (19-2), Graham’s team also spouted-off a season-high three game winning streak during the middle portion of the year. In total, her team scored 136 goals, averaging nearly 10 goals per game. Her team featured four double-digit goal scorers, including a team-high 45 by Stephanie Marran. Additionally, the team sported three President’s Club honorees, two Division II Athletic Directors Academic Achievement Award winners, and six Sunshine State Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll selectees. Graham’s team also produced in the community as each student-athlete volunteered 20 hours of community service apiece. Coming to Saint Leo from her previous position at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, PA, Graham proved to be a great fit into Saint Leo, with prior experience in both Division II and at other Catholic universities, including Canisus College in New

York. Making the transition to Florida and tasked with building a program from the ground floor, Graham is no stranger to developing young teams as she took an inexperienced Griffin’s squad to six wins and two all-conference selections in her only year at the helm of Chestnut Hill. Marking the first new program at Saint Leo since the addition of men’s lacrosse in 2006, women’s lacrosse becomes the 17th NCAA-sponsored sport at Saint Leo University and the ninth sport added to the Lions’ stable in the new millennium. It also marks the ninth women’s program at the institution. In an effort to build the program on the right foot, Reidy conducted an extensive nationwide search for a candidate he felt would fit within the core values the university holds, all while establishing a new, emerging sport into the Saint Leo stable. He felt as if Graham was the perfect fit. In addition to her season at Chestnut Hill, Graham also served as a former Division I assistant coach at Canisius College from 2007-09. She also carries experience from high levels of competition as a student-athlete at Ithaca College and holds a master’s degree in sports administration from Canisius and a bachelor’s degree in journalism with a minor in history from Ithaca College. As the 58th women’s lacrosse program at the NCAA Division II level, the Lions will join Rollins College as just the second DII program in Florida to sponsor the sport. Graham began the task of building the team immediately, and began practices in the fall of 2011. Additionally, in the summer of 2012, Graham was selected to the NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Committee. Graham resides in Wesley Chapel, Fla. •

bASEbALL/SOFTbALL SPORTS WCAASPORTS

Opening Night for the 2013 Spring Baseball & Softball Season Opening night was held on a very chilly evening, Friday, March 1st at WCDP. Over 2000 people attended our unique kickoff. WCAA Baseball & Softball aimed to provide a night of fun, free entertainment for families and players, and a great time was had by everyone! A presentation of all teams was held, introducing everyone from tball and softball sweetees through our senior baseball and belles softball players. Special awards for 2012 All Star teams were announced, including trophy presentations and team photos. We are very proud of our teams that represented us so well in district and state tournaments, and signs with rosters were hung on the teams' respective fields, acknowledging their accomplishments. Ierna's Heating & Cooling sponsored a bounce house and popcorn machine, Gator Fred's also jumped in to the mayhem by providing two free bounce houses for kids to enjoy. Special thanks to them! We offered free face painting for all, and free "Minute to Win It" style games that were a huge hit! A home run derby was held on the senior field; a coach vs coach kickball game on the Majors field was a lot of fun, and kids were encouraged to

jump in and play as well! Our favorite funnel cake vendor was on hand to provide delicious snacks, and concessions offered a special menu for the evening that resulted in record sales for opening night. A huge thank you to all concessions volunteers for helping the evening run smoothly! Our event was capped by our own Jordyn Beer performing the national anthem flawlessly. Jordyn is the 12 year old daughter of Jamie and Alan Beer and is a member of the all county chorus, and is currently preparing for her role as Peter Pan in an upcoming production of Peter Pan. We were very proud that she shared her talents with us. The first pitch for both baseball and softball was thrown by County Commissioner Jack Mariano. Comm. Mariano has been a very vocal supporter of our program and the parks department, and he was welcomed at WCDP as he pitched the first baseball of the season just a bit high & outside, and then, the first softball pitch in for a strike! Thanks to Commissioner Mariano for his appearance and support of our event. Games kicked off on Saturday, March 2nd, and are fully underway at this time. We're very thankful for all the families and friends of our program, and we are anticipating a fantastic spring season. •
